Christian Bale went on a date with Drew Barrymore once, when they were teenagers

Christian Bale covers the new issue of GQ Australia – he’s doing some early promotion for The Dark Knight Rises, which doesn’t come out for more than a month. GAH. I think Bale seems kind of different since he won his Oscar. He seemed so… tightly wound before. He always strikes me as such an intense guy. But after his Oscar win in 2011, I think Bale has felt more accepted in Hollywood, and like he’s no longer “the outsider”. So he’s been a bit more generous, especially with the press. So in this new GQ piece, Bale reveals a never-before-known piece of gossip about himself: he went on a date with Drew Barrymore. Epic.

Famously private Christian Bale has a huge admission to make about his dating life. The “Dark Knight” actor, who is happily married to wife Sibi Blazic, reveals to the June/July issue of GQ Australia that he once dated Drew Barrymore.

“We went to see some bloody awful horror film, and that was the end of it,” he told the magazine of their teenage romance. “She never called again.”

Christian’s “The Dark Knight Rises” was filmed over the last year, and the actor admitted to the magazine that it was an emotional moment when he was nearing hanging up his Bat-suit on the project for good.

“I have been deeply honoured to inhabit this character. It was a massive undertaking. Physically, emotionally, every way. But suddenly we were in the final throes. I sat down and asked for a little space. I stared at the cowl for a good long moment and thought, ‘Man, this one really took on a life of its own,” he said.

While the actor’s Batman run has been met with excitement and major box office success, another of the actor’s projects – “Terminator: Salvation” – created headlines for another reason, when an audio recording of his angry moment on set went viral. Speaking to GQ Australia, Christian said he’s trying to put the past – and past mistakes – behind him.

“You know, it is what it is… We make mistakes – and I’ve made plenty – and I understand the impression I give off. I get it. I’m also not one of these people who has no regrets. Of course I have regrets. Hindsight is 20/20 vision. But you have to move forward,” he said. “And I really can’t worry about what other people think of me. The people around me who know who I am – my friends, my loved ones. That’s what means the most, you know?”

One of the loved ones he treasures most is his daughter, who is a preteen.

“Think about how strange and unfortunate it would be for my daughter if I couldn’t just be a dad. You shouldn’t make your children suffer because of choices you make,” he said. “I get no greater joy than when I’m looking at my daughter and her friends when they’re laughing their a**es off. Movies are great, but when I look back, it’s the time with my family I’m going to remember. That’s the source of character.”

Other outlets make it sound like this date happened very early on in his career… Drew is 37 years old now – Christian is 38. So it wasn’t pervy if it went down in their teenage years, truly. Can you imagine dating some intense teenager and never calling him again and he ends up being Christian Bale: Movie Star? You really have to think back, though – in those days, Drew was dating everybody!

i love Bale. Even with the temper. Great actor.

  2. mia girl says:

I started my Bale crush long ago with Little Women. He’s a great actor, if a bit of a prick.

I’d love to see him take on an epic romantic type of role. (purely for my own fantasy/benefit). I love his intensity.

    • Liv says:

Oh god, yeah! 😉 He’s so young in Little Women and I was always angry Laurie didn’t marry Jo! Did you see Mio In The Land Of Faraway? I didn’t know he was in it as a child until recently – so cute!

      • Veruca says:

Empire of the Sun — he’s mind-blowingly good. I think he was 12 at the time.

      • Ally says:

Yes! Empire of the Sun is Bale’s best acting, and one of Spielberg’s smartest, most sensitive and yet adult-sensibility movies, too. I can’t watch it too often, though, because my heart breaks 10 times through one screening.

Bale has gotten goofy-looking and -sounding as an adult. Besides the temper, his skin looks weirdly waxy and his voice is barking and hoarse. I find all the method intensity fake and unconvincing onscreen in his adult roles.

    • Umlaut says:

      Newsies!

Christian Bale has been my actor crush for most of my life. Hate his temper, but I just can’t help it.

    • Bodhi says:

      And Newsies!!

    • Otter says:

YES, NEWSIES! Saw that when it came out (I was 11,) and am still madly in love with him! God I still love that movie too.

  3. lolaluvsu2 says:

Exactly…who hasn’t dated Drew would be a good party game!

  4. Eve says:

Hmmm…if I were Barrymore I don’t think I’d be regretful or angry. Frankly, I think he’s a grade A douchebag. And as an actor, I don’t see what the fuzz is about — the thing I see him doing really well is losing weight.

But if I was broke and not famous by the time he was as star…yeah, I’d be pretty jealous.

    • Lipsy says:

“the thing I see him doing really well is losing weight.”

LOL! I wish I had that talent :p

      • Eve says:

He lost so much weight for The Machinist that the director became worried and even *HAD* to stop him from losing more. From Wikipedia:

Christian Bale starved himself for over four months prior to filming, as his character needed to look drastically thin. Allegedly, his eating consisted of one cup of black unsweetened coffee and an apple (or a can of tuna) each day (approximately 55-260 calories).[4] According to the DVD commentary, he lost 28 kilograms (62 lb), reducing his body mass to 54 kilograms (120 lb). Bale wanted to go down to 45 kilograms (99 lb), but the filmmakers would not let him due to health concerns. He later regained the mass, plus an additional 27 kilograms (60 lb) through weightlifting and proper eating, in preparation for his role in Batman Begins.

Then there is also the weight he lost for “Rescue Dawn” and “The Fighter”. I think he has issues.

    • Otter says:

I don’t know if he has issues per se, I think he just takes his work VERY seriously, and as such, gets really frustrated when others dick around and get in the way. I rather like that he’s not just lazily riding on his looks, and he easily could have. He puts a lot of blood, sweat, and tears into his work and I applaud his intense devotion.

      • Eve says:

I think he takes everything TOO seriously and when it comes to his roles (specifically the ones I mentioned) to the point of putting his own life at risk. After losing a dramatic amount of weight for The Machinist (and you can check that in the DVD extra features), he had to quickly regain all of it and then some for Batman Begins.

He has a family, he’s the father of a young child so I do find that irresponsible (and weird).

      • Otter says:

Yeah I remember hearing about how he almost died “preparing” for his role in The Machinist, it is a bit over-the-top. But at least it was all in effort to better his work, rather than almost dying because he likes to rage it like Gerard Butler. I know there’s totally a middle ground between the two extremes, but I like that he’s on the side of “work hard” instead of “party hard.” 🙂

  5. kpist says:

I just watched American Psycho for the first time last weekend, WOW, what a crazy movie!!! I will always love him!!

  6. blah says:

I know people who have worked with him and he’s really not that bad in person. A bit intense, because he’s got that whole method actor thing going on, but by no means a dick. I think he spazzed out on the set of Terminator because he takes his craft so bloody seriously.

  7. Mia 4S says:

I love this guy, unreal talent and seems to be a very loving father. I am not sure if it was the Oscar that led to him feeling more at peace, I don’t think it is a coincidence that his mother and sister who called the police on him then ended up whining to the tabloids that he has cut them off. That was around the same time as the Oscar. Sometimes getting rid of destructive influences in your life can do wonders!

  8. yankeefangurl860 says:

Okay, I’ve adored Christian Bale for many years. So, as a longtime fan, I must say this isn’t a new revelation. He’s mentioned it in interviews in the past, but way before he reached his current level of fame. They went out after he finished Empire of the Sun when he was 13. So yeah, they were teens at the time…

  9. Tiffany27 says:

    He

  10. Tiffany27 says:

He seems super intense, but I LOVE what he said about his daugther. He seems really invested in being a good father.

  11. T.C. says:

Drew was a wild child. She has dated everybody by the time she was 30. Bale is calming down as he gets older.

  12. bns says:

Am I the only one who keeps forgetting that he’s not American.

  13. lucy2 says:

He’s such a talented actor, I’ve seen a great deal of his work and am so glad he finally got recognized with an Oscar for it. He may be intense and maybe has a short fuse, but overall I think he seems like a good guy who really loves his wife and daughter.
I kept thinking his daughter was much younger! Time flies.

  14. Luise says:

He grosses me out and he has a very bad nose job.

  15. Tiffany says:

I have always been a fan of Bale. It could be because he is only around when there is something to promote. When he gives interviews and talks about family and life once he is done with a movie, you have a bit of a belief in what he says because he is not out getting papped every second of every day.

  16. Rhiley says:

You know they slept together. Drew has slept with almost everyone in the Hollyhood and a few randoms ta’boot (but still less that Jennifer Love Hewitt).

  17. Jo 'Mama' Besser says:

All I’ll say that I appreciate it when people say that they do, in fact, have regrets. Browbeat me all you like, but whenever I hear a person–any person–say ‘I have absolutely no regrets’, the only thing you’ve communicated is that you’re full of shit and a bad actor at it, to boot.

Perhaps I’ll regret admitting that Joan’s storyline on Sunday was as compelling as a slab of granite, but I’ve never wanted inanimate stone to defenestrate itself. I’ve seen Bernini, I’m not completely out to lunch. This show is too miserablist and is just autofellating itself, lately. Its hold in me is rapidly loosening.

  18. Fleur says:

I’ve had a crush on Christian Bale since Little Women. I could watch him read the phone book.

As for Drew, I love seeing that retro-90s photo! maybe this is the result of being a tween in the 1990s, but I always thought her 90s ‘Flower Child’ look was better than her current ‘Cover Girl’ one. I think shorter hair on her was so much more flattering than her current long hair, which just elongates her face.

  19. Carrie says:

they dated once when they were 13 and they saw an awful horror movie:OMG it looks like my teen date

to date even once with Drew when she was 13 probably was epic (she did her first rehab at 13)

  20. Lyssie says:

I’m pretty sure that Drew’s fiancé, Britney Spear’s fiancé and Jessica Simpson’s fiancé are all the same guy. They all look EXACTLY the same.

  21. Fifi says:

“One of the loved ones he treasures most is his daughter, who is a preteen.”

    Preteen? She’s 7 years-old.

I love Bale, with or without the douche.

  22. cari says:

Been a Balehead since Little Women. Have seen every movie he has ever done and can say he is 100% the most interesting and talented actor there is. Met him once and he is the nicest, most laid back and down to earth real person in LA. The whole temper thing angers me because it was taken out of context, and the most narrow minded have pegged him as having one, when he does not. Look him up on IMDB and try some of his other movies if you want a real treat. Rescue Dawn, American Psycho, All The Little Animals…to name a few.
