Did Gwyneth actually say this?

I really hope this is one of those made up quotes and that Gwyneth didn’t actually say this. It sounds really arrogant and more than a little ignorant.

Oscar-winning US actress Gwyneth Paltrow feels dinner talk is far more interesting in her adopted homeland Britain than back in her native country.

“I love the English lifestyle, it’s not as capitalistic as America. People don’t talk about work and money, they talk about interesting things at dinner,” she told “NS,” the weekend magazine supplement of daily Portuguese newspaper Diario de Noticias on Saturday.

“I like living here because I don’t fit into the bad side of American psychology. The British are much more intelligent and civilized than the Americans,” the 34-year-old added.

It seems too obnoxious even for Gwyneth and I would be surprised if it’s an accurate quote.

Header picture is of Gwyneth at the Prince’s Trust Gala on 11/15 and is from Saving Face forum.

Yeah, I bet her slumped shoulders, poor posture and mopey looking face really impress the monarchs in the UK.

    Such a class act…..

  2. Pecarrie says:

That’s not a bad thing to say, it’s certainly not ignorant, more like it’s intelligent and honest. We are capatialistic as crap here and to the detriment of ourselves. Plus we are over-consumers much more interested in thrill value than real depth– thus the lack thereof.
I believe 100% that she said it. And I applaud her for it.
more people need to put this “american” igno-arrogance to shame. I live here, btw.

  3. chelsea says:

what a snotty thing to say. So she really hates the capatilistic system that pays her millions of dollars to be in a movie?? Actors are paid an obscene amount of money for doing an UNINPORTANT job, while many do very important jobs for very little money. She should effing stay in England because she is disgusting.

  4. Neo says:

It’s ignorant and stereotypical to say any group of people is this or that. It generalizes everyone! Not to mention, there are sooooo many different types of people in the USA. If this place is so bad, why are so many risking their lives to be here? Also, Pecarrie, I doubt you’ve spent much time in Britain. In my opinion, Gwyneth is a traitor. And it is so easy to not speak about money when you have sooo much of it.

  5. Pecarrie says:

Does it matter? I’ve been in many other countires. I’m sure more than you’ve been to, and for longer times.

  6. Matt says:

I don’t care. She’s mostly right, even if there’s some arrogance involved. Doesn’t really bother me, unless she starts actively hating Americans.

  7. Pecarrie says:

Thank you… y’know, travel isnt even a prerequisite– all that’s necessary is to open your eyes and unplug your ears… I don’t hate either– I just get rawled up when people act like this is ‘supposed ot be the greatest country andanyone who says anything against it is wrong’– that’s bs that gets brainwashed into people.

  8. Izzy says:

I’m fairly certain she said this stuff months ago. must have been a very slow news day…

  9. Bitch Please says:

Gwyneth always was a prim and proper bitch. But this comment? It’s been said before by other celebrities like Madonna. While it’s idiotic to say that one nationality is smarter than the other, there is a cultural detriment in America where dinner conversation is about work and money. I sort of agree with that, but trust me, the English are not collectively smarter than anyone else. Their education system isn’t that awesome, either.

  10. ER says:

If she thinks America is so lousy, why doesn’t she use her hordes of money to move away?! Freedom of speech is what allows people to say that kind of crap. I hope it comes back to bite her! God bless America!!!!

  11. Christopher Longaway says:

Gweneth still is a nice lady. I still love her. She is cool by me.

  12. noo noo says:

I’ve lived in both England and America for long stretches (10 years or so) and have to say that the Americans are very money-orientated and more culturally narrow-minded that the British. HOWEVER actors and actresses in the public eye really should keep these kind of opinions to themselves, unless they want to offend an entire nation….

  13. Pecarrie says:

“freedom of speech allows people to say this kind of crap”… uh, anything less isn’t freedom of speech, right? And, why the imposed political correctness and censorship and expectations of uniformity and conformation on everybody? Is that really ‘freedom’, when you think about it? (If you are attacked for saying something or told what to think)
You know, so much for freedom of thought or speech when it seems that your mind is being filled by the demands to think this or that, not say this or that, or people are telling you what is right or wrong. That’s far from a free thought. People don’t bother to think much or know much because in essence it’s wrong to- and that’s exactly what the government and ‘big business’ wants from you so they can take advantage of people and their cluelessness for their success, power, and profit. Yeah I sound like a freak but whatever… when you look at the core of the matter…

  14. Chris X says:

What a pretentious cow. In any country, there are dinner tables where talk is interesting and civilized and there are also dinner tables where people are farting, burping, stuffing their faces and talking about the latest piece of crap movie Paltrow has turned out.

  15. Flea says:

I agree that much of America is xenophobic and it’s a shame they don’t travel more. Europeans have a different mindset but they can be equally xenophobic. I’ve spent some time in Britain and was glared down by several in a small pub simply for the way I hold my fork (american style), which I found to be extremely narrow minded. There are deficiences in both sides. Of course, Gwyneth, with millions, can now afford to be a part of the narrow-minded snotty set in England, which is quite “above” the rich folk in America. So basically, all she’s doing is buying into and adopting the “class” distinction of Britain. Which isn’t a great idea to go around blurting about.

Either way, the girlfriend seriously needs to TRIM HER HAIR!

  16. Duckie says:

“If she thinks America is so lousy, why doesn’t she use her hordes of money to move away?!”

    Um….I think she did.

  17. Mr. T says:

She said what she said, not a big deal. I will say this, if there is an outbreak of war, you will so many anti-american americans sneak back to the USA for security. Face it, the world is not a safe place and despite what conventions people think they have, the world is a scary place. Can you imagine the world if there was no america? Russia, China, N. Korea, Iran would be taking the rest of the world over. Keep it real people

  18. iscatonic says:

Im sorry but how do you fold a fork American style?

  19. celebitchy says:

American style fork holding: You switch the fork to the left hand when you’re cutting and cut a bunch of meat ahead of time.

European style fork holding: You leave the fork in the right hand, cut with the left, and take a bite while you’re still holding the fork if you want. You don’t cut up the steak ahead of time, and just cut, eat, cut, eat, etc.

  20. Vern says:

If its true she hasn’t met the right kind of people here; intelligent, grounded people that do exist in America as well as anywhere else

  21. AC says:

I agree. She’s not WRONG per se… but she shouldn’t talk about it because it can be misinterpreted.

  22. Brit says:

Umm… you actually hold the fork in the left hand and the knife in the right-guess that was posted by an American!

    Gwen Rocks!

  23. Toubrouk says:

Just to inform Gwyneth Paltrow, it cost me 12$ just to see one of your movie at the local cinema. If you believe North-America must be less capitalistic, can you find a way to let the public see movies at a lower cost? Maybe you can cut your multi-million salary on your next flic.

  24. Terri says:

Generalizations are just dangerous…period. I am an American and am quite pleased to say that I never discuss money and/or work at the dinner table. And I don’t dine with anyone who does.

As for the American style of holding a knife and fork…I agree with the description above except that you’re usually taught it’s not “polite” to cut up all of your meat at once. Cut 2-3 pieces, lay the knife to the side and enjoy the cut pieces. Then proceed to cut a few more. At least that is the way I was taught…

  25. Domidroid says:

I don’t get what’s so terrible about it.
I guess because the truth hurts or something. I don’t believe it’s ignorant to behaviouraly generalise a nation, because because every nation’s culture influences it’s inhabitants. Basically, the world views Americans as fat, violent, ignorant racists. I’m not saying that’s entirely my view, but Josephine Baker did have to leave here to be treated respectfully. But really, who cares? Gwyneth Paltrow is a wannabe Englishwoman who looks like a Gelfling, and her husband’s band sucks. On the other hand, a country that allowed Britney Spears to become a cultural icon, really can’t defend itself against certain charges.

  26. amre says:

    yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

  27. ER says:

England is a great country, and so is America. Why does one have to be bashed in an effort o make the other look better? As an American I am proud of where I live. It’s a privilege to live here and millions of people less fortunate, would give anything to be here.

  28. lyric says:

Obviously she is a great conversationalist, the twit.

  29. Sarah says:

I’ve lived in the US, England, Germany and Japan as an Army brat, and I’ve traveled to many more places as an adult. There are smart, sophisticated, well-mannered people in every single country I’ve visited, just as there are assholes and ignorant fools.

I don’t think it’s particularly smart, sophisticated, or well-mannered to make gross generalizations about millions of human beings, wherever they live. I also think it’s easy to disparage talk of work and money when one never has to worry about either. Most of us spend 40+ hours a week working and must think about money regularly because it is a limited resource we need to survive. Gwyneth has no such worries and apparently spends her time judging others who are not as privileged as she has been.

    “I am African,” indeed.

  30. Anonymous says:

    I agree completely with Sarah.

  31. Poor Boopie says:

Nothing new out of Gwyneth’s mouth. She’s been spouting that shit for the last year.

  32. Anonymous says:

bare in mind that we are the ones who pay her salary by supporting high film costs. if you don’t want to support it, don’t go. simple. otherwise, you really can’t complain about how easy she has it.

  33. Frankie says:

Well it’s the freedom of speech, but on the other hand it’s hollywood america that made her famous so she should’ve been a bit more subtle(If she really did say that)

  34. Anonymous says:

Whatever gave her this “bitter” taste in her mouth about America? The ability to make millions of dollars with her mediocre acting and live anywhere and do whatever she wants?

People die trying to come to this country for the opportunities that are here. We are one of the most free and entrepreneurial countries in the world.

Bet she doesn’t give up her U.S. citzenship in exchange for the U.K, she wouldn’t want to pay their taxes!

I agree with the previous poster…skip her movies they aren’t worth your money or time.
