Meryl Streep is so awesome, she can wear a dress made out of curtains, right?

The American Film Institute awarded Shirley MacLaine with a Lifetime Achievement Award last night in LA. Guess who was on hand to give Shirley the award? MERYL! For the event, Meryl stayed by Shirley’s side the entire time. Meryl also decided to wear what I’m assuming are flat-out DRAPES. Really fussy drapes at that. So, obviously, Meryl was a sartorial hot mess, but I can’t hate on her. Clothes aren’t her thing. So she’s wearing drapes. Or a tablecloth. Or wallpaper. As for Shirley – well, if she has one more facelift, her eyes are going to meet at the back of her head. Look how natural Meryl looks in comparison!

Other celebrities in attendance… well, Jennifer Aniston was there, but she didn’t walk the red carpet, so we don’t have access to any photos of her – you can see some here. Here’s Elizabeth McGovern wearing what amounts to a doily. McGovern and MacLaine have been working together on Downton Abbey.

Marcia Gay Harden and Melanie Griffith (Melanie was without Antonio last night – dunDUNdun). Marcia looks great, doesn’t she? And Melanie looks… er… okay.

Toni Collette wins everything, forever. She’s not barefoot – she’s just wearing sandals that blend into the black-grey carpet.

Here’s Wendi Deng, wife of Rupert Murdoch. Why is she dressed like a Molly Ringwald character?

Katherine Heigl looks like she’s about to tell someone off. She probably is. Her dress is fine, but THAT HAIR. The makeup sucks too – that is the wrong lipstick color for her.

    YES is the answer.

  2. daisydoodle says:

How old is Katherine Heigl supposed to be? I think she may be fudging her age, she looks in her forties…

  3. Bad Fairy says:

She has never been a dresser. But she is a glorious actress and an accessible person so, whadya gonna do? That outfit on Murdoch’s wife is WAY more disturbing. It looks like she raided her tweenager’s closet.

  4. bea says:

Meryl’s ensemble is fine on the top – it’s the horrifying skirt that is doing her a major disservice! Terrible color, cut and fabric weight. I get the feeling she wants to be comfortable, but she needs a better skirt and someone could at least spruce up her hair. It’s only right 🙂

  5. lizzi says:

OMG did katherine heigl have work done? Her face looks pulled and pinched beyond recognition. Also puffy.

  6. Rhea says:

Meryl is like my fun, open minded auntie who doesn’t mind to do pranks and crazy stuff. For her, I would give her pass for anything she wants to wear. 🙂

  7. lower-case deb says:

my late paternal grandma’s sofa cover is freakishly similar to her skirt.
but… I love Meryl anyway. she can wear whatever.

  8. Maguita says:

Maybe Meryl was a curtain in a past life?

I am referencing here Shirley MacLaine’s believes in past lives. She wrote books about it!

Katherine looks really HOT, from shoulders to toes. Her face looks 20 years older, and it’s just not the hair. Her face is all kinds of wrinkled puffiness… Like someone who had just finished crying her eyes out!

  9. RN says:

Melanie Griffith is the ghost of Heigl’s future.

  10. Jenna says:

    Can? Yes.

    Should? NO!

  11. Agnes says:

    i didn’t recognize melanie griffith – whoa!

    • Maguita says:

You should click on the Aniston link… She looked pretty and surprisingly AMAZING!

Should have walked the carpet with the rest of the ladies.

      • Jackie says:

sorry, disagree. i wish she would stop trying to dress sexy. she just ends up looking out of date.

she has slowly moved into cougar territory over the last few years.

she had great style while on ‘Friends’.

      • blonde on the dock says:

Agree! She does look amazing. Love the white dress on her. I really dislike the cougar reference. It’s so derogatory and demeaning to women. I thought the term was outdated actually. Sorry Jackie. I dont’t want to come across as picking on you.

      • Jackie says:

no offense taken! i don’t necessarily like the term either, but sometimes i find it very fitting.

      • Kara Ann says:

        Jennifer did look amazing!

  12. aims says:

Yeah my two favorite actresses! I love them both! Both have amazing wisdom, and humor. I just get the feeling, that if you were lucky enough to hang out with them your face would hurt from all the smiling and your eyes would be swollen from all the tears you would have from the laughing. Both are not bad things.

  13. Jen says:

Shirley MacLaine: wig + facelifts = give it up.

    • Sassy says:

Hey! Shirley is 78 years old. Don’t be mean to her. God her hands look ancient, though! That is the trouble with facelifts, the rest of the body remains old and the face is refreshed.

      • Shaz says:

exactly! Meryl is 18 or so years younger, give Shirley a break – I love her too

  14. Nessa says:

I will always love Meryl. She isn’t into fashion, and doesn’t give a f*@$!!! It just adds to her awesomeness, IMO.

  15. lw says:

I actually really like Meryl’s outfit. Toni Colette’s is even better, though. And I love how she managed to pull it off comfortably (no heels).

    • kate says:

i kinda have to say i like her outfit 🙂 it works on her…. probably her alone but it reminds me of something jenna lyon would wear.

    • Kara Ann says:

I like Meryl outfit too! Probably b/c she’s wearing it and it’s just “her” so cool.

Toni Collette is one million flavors of awesome period

  16. kay says:

I really like all the dresses except the Molly Ringwald one.

Now I just really want to watch pretty in pink again. Ducky!

One of my fav movies is Postcards from the Edge 🙂

  17. Shelly says:

I like the silhouette of Meryl’s dresses – they are very figure flattering to her and age-appropriate, and she obviously digs the formal shirt-dress look. However, I dislike the fabric choices a lot of times. But her beauty transcends it all, so yes, she can pretty much get away with anything.

  18. Sandra says:

Melanie Griffith has dressed herself beautifully, age appropriate, and love the hair.

Someone seriously needs to grill Meryl for her beauty secrets, because DAMN! That woman has got beautiful skin for any age.

Katherine Heigl’s dress and shoes are to die for.

  19. lucy2 says:

Meryl always looks great, even in curtains!
I like Heigl’s dress a lot and it fits her perfectly, but she looks so much older and the hair isn’t helping.
Elizabeth and Marcia look good too. For a moment I thought Toni Collette was Uma Thurman.
I like Jennifer’s dress, but a little less cleavage would be better.
Melanie probably should have opted for stockings.
    Wendi looks stupid.

  20. Amanda G says:

I actually really like Meryl’s look! It’s not something *I* would ever wear, but she pulls it off.

  21. Byte Me says:

I think when a woman’s age shows in her legs it’s time to get out those dreaded pantyhose and wear them like it’s 1980.
Please ladies, cover those nasty bruises, scabs, moles, etc.

    • ch says:

So, do you mean that women should hide their age, hide their bodies after a certain age? Why?

  22. Annie says:

Hmmm, Melanie looks great for once! She lost the tacky too young clothes and layed off the lip filler for a bit and what do you know? There’s an attractive woman under there.

  23. NYCGAL says:

You guys may think I am nuts, but I think Meryl looks beautiful! her skirt probably is prettier up close. She looks fresh but sophisticated and age appropriate. I also love her makeup, its soft and flattering.

  24. Sweettart says:

I LOVE Meryl Streep, but . . . NO . . . everything about that outfit is just WRONG.

. . . but, she’s Meryl Streep, so she gets to wear whatever she wants.

I actually like Elizabeth McGovern’s dress. It looks like it would be a fun, happy dress to wear.

Melanie Griffith looks like she’s had a lot of fillers, but I think she looks good.

I don’t think I would have known that was Toni Collette. Her look has really changed.

    Wendi Deng . . . scary outfit

Katherine Heigl may need a new stylist (I don’t care for her makeup either,) but didn’t she just bring home a new baby? I think she looks pretty good for having a toddler and a new baby at home.

When my kids were young, I thought I was doing great if my clothes were right side out and I had on a correctly paired set of shoes.

  25. erika says:

oh wow! Anna Wintour is grinding her teeth down to chalk dust! how she could play a caricature of Wintour and turn up like this!

I DO remember this ‘look’ the prarie girl look, Jessica McLintock, early – mid 80s (I know I’m dated…40 but I swear I look 30) but yeah, my mom would sew my sisters and I these ‘prarie girl’ skirts, for the 1st day of school. Night before she’d roll our hair up in pin curls and that was our ‘1st day of school outfit’!!! God!!!

  26. taxi says:

Mrs. Murdoch looks as if her legs have been beaten with a stick. The upper 2/3 of her outfit isn’t that great either.

  27. Ramona Q says:

Meryl’s outfit, glasses, bun = Little house on the prairie school teacher.

Melanie’s face looks better (less jacked) than it has in a long time.
