Katy Perry in a flapper dress at the MOCA event: ridiculous or lovely?

Katy Perry

Katy Perry attempted to go for the Twenties flapper vibe at last night’s City of Hope event at MOCA last night. I’ll say something nice — at least she’s (temporarily?) dumped the faux-goth look here. However, Katy looks to be wearing a satin, rose-colored nightie even though this was a full-length gown that probably cost thousands of dollars (not that she had to pay for it). I’m also assuming that she’s wearing a wig as well, but perhaps she could have removed the purple from her hair and taken out her hair extensions. It’s probably just a wig. Up close, her makeup is quite dramatic but Katy usually overdoes it in that department anyway, so that’s nothing new. I think that overall, Katy was going for glamour and “old Hollywood,” but instead she achieves “ill-fitting dress with boob spillage.” Those spaghetti straps must be made of steel to hold that rack up without any sort of aid in the brassiere department.

Katy Perry

Meanwhile, here’s a bit of Katy-associated news from Russell Brand, who has appeared on a UK talk show with some uncharacteristically insensitive words about his failed marriage:

Russell Brand may have lost a sexy-superstar wife when he divorced Katy Perry but according to the star that most difficult part of the break-up was “the admin.”

Speaking on Lorraine about the couple’s split after just 14 months last December the Rock Of Ages star said: “I suppose a divorce is difficult isn’t it, because of the admin! There’s a lot of admin.”

He went on to claim that he didn’t see his marriage as a failure because it was “really good” while they were together. “It did work out in a way because you are married for some time, and that’s really good, and then you’re not married, and that’s really good,” he explained. “You just have to have acceptance of things. She is a person that I love, but now this is a new time.”

When Lorraine added that she thought they were well suited, the 36 year-old admitted that while they did love each other he was looking forward to the future. “Well we were for that amount of time, and now this is a new time.” he added.

It wasn’t as easy for Katy though, who recently admitted that she had found the heartbreaking split “tough.”

Russell went on to reveal that yoga was helping him to move on with his life: “I don’t want to sound like a lunatic, but if you meditate and do yoga you become attuned to that there is different energy that’s constant and very, very beautiful. Some people would call it God, some people would call it karma or the cosmos, me – I call it sexual charisma.”

A lot of you might think Russell sounds rude during this interview while talking about the paperwork being the biggest hassle of the divorce, but at least he’s not the one who walked in and signed with a happy face. So bottom line is that they’ve both been douches to each other, but I still think Katy is slightly douchier for being so flippant about legal proceedings.

Anyway, back to this disaster of a dress, which does nothing for Katy’s (admittedly pretty great) figure. Although this “flapper in front of a trailer” shot is a nice touch, don’t you think?

    Actually love it.
    Shoes do not match.

  2. Bobby sue says:

Love it! She rocks so many crazy styles. Why not honor the amazing flapper era?

  3. Sabrine says:

I like the look. It’s fun to see the flapper style! She doesn’t look ridiculous and the dress is not ill-fitting. It’s just one of her many different outfits and she’ll be on to something else tomorrow. Is anything nice ever said about anyone on here?!

    • Tiffany says:

I like a 20s influence, but this is too costumey. If she just did the dress and didn’t do the headpiece at the same time it might have worked better (or vice vera).

Lainey has other pictures of it, and the material makes her look like she has a HUGE tire around her waist. She is a tiny woman, but this material isn’t flattering at all.

Overall, I am not a fan of KP or her style, and this doesn’t really change it. She doesn’t seem to have a sense of self to me, just throwing everything at the wall and seeing what sticks.

      • Maria86 says:

+1, that’s the sum of my thoughts.

The pictures here don’t really show Katy OWNING it, you know? She might as well be wearing jeans and a t-shirt with the expressions on her face. Maybe it’s her posture or the way she keeps playing with her necklace like a fidgety like girl, but something just feels off to me. Meh.

    • skipper says:

Uh, no. It’s celebitchy – not celepolitey. Bwahahahahahahah!!!

Anyhoo, for celebrity ass-kissing, go to perez hilton’s website.

  4. Maguita says:

I find his words right on par with the situation: Why regurgitate a failed situation, when all you need in life to grow the f-ck up is to move on! Hey Katy!

They should not have married. They should have lived together. Whether he did it to please her religious background (freak of a preach of a father she has), or he really wanted a life-long commitment, in this day and age of easily accessible temptation, and professional drive, and long-distance love, they should have lived together first.

And BTW, LOVE her look. I am obsessed with Boardwalk Empire fashion. Paz de la Huerta’s wardrobe, when she is dressed to the nines, is drop-dead-amazing and sexy.

  5. Chris says:

Is that Bella Cullen’s shoes for her wedding?

    • n says:

I was just about to ask the same but thought I would sound like a Twilight loonie πŸ™‚

    • Shoe_lover says:

i dont know if they are because i dont read or watch that sh!t but they are Manolo Blahniks

  6. Macey says:

I actually love this look but then the Flapper Era is one of my favorite eras

  7. Marta says:

Aren’t those shoes the same from (Twilight) Bella’s wedding? I swear I’m not crazy…

  8. Beatrix says:

she really doesn’t have a personality, does she?

  9. Carrie says:

She has such bad posture she makes herself look like she has a gut. Maybe some alcohol/coke bloat? I just don’t like her. She could put on a million-dollar outfit and look like a cheap hooker. On a positive note, when she’s out at some event like this she’s not in a recording studio, so there’s that.

  10. Me says:

    Lovely!

  11. Alexis says:

She takes classy stuff and tacks it up.

  12. Lindy says:

Actually kind of love it. And I do like Russell Brand but sometimes his “I’m so enlightened and sober and meditative and full of pure energy blah blah blah” makes me want to roll my eyes. Kind of gives me a tiny bit more sympathy for Katy. Not sure I could survive that kind of smug BS!

    • Maguita says:

I think it has to do with Russell’s personal leitmotiv that keeps him in check, and on the straight and narrow.

Like for example, on a much smaller scale, if you keep telling everyone how you stick to your diet, no matter what, and how it makes you feel: It’s your leitmotiv to truly sticking to your diet.

      • Lindy says:

No doubt you’re right about that, and I do have a ton of respect for someone who has beaten addiction and worked hard to stick to sobriety. But just like someone who is constantly going on and on about a diet, hearing about all the freakin’ time would drive me nuts! (I have a friend currently fixated on paleo dieting and I swear if I hear that word once more, or hear about how clean and full of energy she feels, I will hurl!) πŸ™‚

  13. some bitch says:

The pearls look fake. I’m sure they’re not, but the outfit somehow just looks budget to me.

  14. Tim Whatley says:

Too literal. This is a costume, not an outfit.

    • JB says:

Exactly! Couldn’t have put it better myself.

      • Lyra says:

Yep! Everything she wears looks like a costume. It’s obvious a stylist finds a theme and goes overboard with it. She has no style. She’s not a fashion girl.

  15. Bradley says:

Lost little bitch troll from hell. She went from candy-crap to goth and now 1920 look. She wears too much makeup, her blueberry hair are disgusting and her “dress” is horrible. WTF is wrong with this color? It looks like raw chicken meat.

  16. Cait says:

I like the flapper look in small doses. The outfit as a whole doesn’t work, too costume-y. I actually like her hair that way, but not the color. The dress is ok but that color reminds me of a grandma’s nightgown.

  17. TheOriginalKitten says:

    Is it Halloween already?

  18. Tiffany says:

Is it just me, or are her boobs barely covered by the rust material? It looks like the lace is showing a whole lot that maybe should have been covered up.

  19. gobo says:

This is too much like a nightdress from the early 80s rather than a flapper dress. Peach is not her colour and satin is not her fabric. Maybe on someone else.

  20. Jennifer12 says:

I love the 20s, though I think she steals looks from Dita von Tease. I’m so sick of her trying to look like the coolest girl in high school; this is a huge improvement. I think Kate Moss- of all people- has a better, more ingrained sense of style and pulls off these looks better. Her 20s wedding dress was perfect.

  21. Chinoiserie says:

The outfit looks a bit off, maybe its the satin or something but it looks a bit like a costume. However I like the idea. But 20s dresses are not designed for big brested women like Katy.

  22. jelly says:

I really like the shoes…atleast she got that right.

  23. safina says:

I actually like it, maybe the colour of the dress doesn’t suit her, but she does look really pretty in it.

  24. Embee says:

At first I thought what he said was deflecting from an incredibly personal question. Then, I thought he could also be saying “we were honest and sorted it amicably, so the biggest hassle was actually the lawyers.”

  25. mln89 says:

i would actually say she has elements of the 1920’s and 1930’s. the hairstyle and the necklace are definitely 20’s inspired, and the dress is form fitting and slinky, which is very 1930’s (ex: jean harlow). i studied costume history, so i’m a little particular about this kind of thing.

  26. Bette says:

    She looks okay.

BTW, I saw the video of that interview with Russell and he comes across more jokey with that line about the “admin”. I mean, he’s a comedian, and he’s not going to get all heavy talking about his deepest emotions in a morning chat show interview. Considering that he also says (again) that he “loves” Katy and was happy while he was with her, I don’t think there’s anything so insensitive about his comments.

  27. NeoCleo says:

Whatever. I would not refuse having the opportunity to have her looks.

  28. Hanna says:

Tacky. Too much makeup, the “outfit” is too costumy. Why does she switch looks all the time? Fake cakefaced hoe.

  29. Camille (The original) says:

    Awful, from head to toe.

  30. Jayna says:

It looks like she was playing dressup.

  31. Str8Shooter says:

She is the white version of that other attention wh-re, Nicki Minaj.

Please. Both of you just GO AWAY.

  32. Lady Satan says:

I love the dress! That is one of the prettiest, and best-fitting things KP has worn probably ever.

Lose the cheap faux pearls and half the make-up though. That garbage just takes away from what would have been a great look.

    • Vesper says:

I agree about this being her best look, and I love everything, but the pearls. They do look like cheap faux pearls. I don’t mind pearls for this look, but not the ones she has choosen.

  33. I Choose Me says:

Nice fit and colour but looks too much like a night gown for me to like it completely.

  34. Jover says:

Nice outfit but when does she ever have time to work on her “music” Oh, that’s right she’s a pop tart – that’s what the studio team is for; she’s the confection to reel in the bucs.

  35. WOM says:

OHMIGOD!! She is wearing a satin dress without a single wrinkle. That’s an amazing feat! If Katy’s decided to forego sitting or bending at the waist or breathing in the name of fashion, I doff my cap at her.
