Ashley Dupre on 20/20: I’m a very bright girl, I value my health

Elliot Spitzer’s hooker Ashley Dupre and her deep thoughts were on 20/20 on Friday night. She came off as fake and superficial and while she did cry throughout the interview it looked like she was acting. She’s a decent actress and there will be people who buy it, but I found her unconvincing to say the least.

The above interview is just a clip, and the rest of the interview is more of the same. Ashley tried to paint herself as a normal girl who just needed the money and maybe by some people’s estimates she succeeded. Here are some highlights.

On how she got through the sex
“You had to be emotionally disconnected from your heart to your head.”

On the fact that she wasn’t a full time hooker
Sawyer reported that Ashley supposedly worked 3 months at a time and would then take six months off “to work at a real estate agency or waitressing, only to return to escort again.” She had a married boyfriend paying her bills for six months, which could explain it.

Whether she was afraid people would find out
“Absolutely, no one knew about that.”

On whether there were things she wouldn’t do
“Absolutely. I’m a very bright girl and I value my health and would do whatever necessary to make sure I was always protected, always…. If I did [feel I was in danger] I would leave.”

On how she got herself prepared to go out and be a prostitute
She had to stop the interview when Sawyer asked her this, but it didn’t seem sincere. Then when they came back she said she “hugged her dog” before she went out.

On if she had the “Pretty Woman” fantasy of getting saved by a client
This was where the real Ashley seemed to come out. She got animated and serious and it was all business for her.

“No. [scowls] I served a purpose. I knew what my purpose was. If I was surprised at their kindness, it’s fake kindness. [looks pissed off]. I mean, it’s time spent together, but it’s still not real. Kind of like having an abusive boyfriend and saying ‘oh but he loves me.'”

On the married boyfriend that gave her a six month reprieve from prostitution
She started crying here, and it looked fake and very put on. Apparently she was living with a guy she met outside her escort job who knew she was a prostitute. She gave up the job for him and it sounded like he was paying for the apartment and all her bills. She supposedly didn’t know he was married, but when he left her she had to go back to prostitution to pay the rent and her credit card debt.

She went back to being a prostitute in December, a month before the scandal
Here she read from her supposed diary from that time and she said it was hard to go back to prostitution after six months off. She said “I don’t know why it was so difficult for me. What if I got sick, what if I got AIDS, what if I got killed? I never planned on going back to work, but I had to.”

When asked why Spitzer was deemed a “difficult” client, as found out in the FBI investigation.
“Legally I’ve been advised not to discuss that.” She also wouldn’t discuss if she saw him more than once. “I don’t feel that I brought him down. [that was] a decision that he made.”

On her half-assed apology to Spitzer’s wife.
Sawyer asked her if she had something to say to Spitzer, but she said “I don’t think I would say it to him. I would say it to his wife. Sorry for your pain.”

The future for Ashley
Ashley went back to live with her mom after the scandal. 20/20 reports that she’s turned down a realty TV show, a million dollar offer to pose in Hustler, and book deals.

She described how she makes sense of it in simple terms, and said she hopes to someday find a husband who is also her best friend, and that she is detached from her hooker persona.

“That was a piece of me back then. I’m no longer that person… I can’t think about that because that was the past.”

Ashley isn’t likely to be charged in connection with the FBI investigation into her agency, according to 20/20.

She seemed like a master manipulator but maybe I’m wrong. There’s something vapid yet cunning about her and it was like she tried to appear contrite but just wasn’t feeling it.

Well, dong that, you cant feel contrite or else you wouldnt be able ot do that job in the first place. If in your mind you accepted or viewed it as something wrongm then that decision to do that would never have been made.
Its a form of self protection and justification. So maybe the cunningness you sense is her ability to deceive herself. I understand her completely, though. Sometimes things must be done which you never would have wanted to do, but when the time comes you need to put your nose to the wheel and therefore need to find ways to defend your position.

  2. aleach says:

why is this chick getting interviewed in the first place? this was news like…months ago, not now.
i dont think shes a bad person per se, but you can tell shes putting on for the camera. she didnt sound sincere at all. she knew what she was doing. there are other ways to make $ than by being a prostitute.
but it wasnt her fault spitzer got busted. he got himself into that situation. so no, no sympathy for him at all.

  3. aleach says:

im sure she was embarassed, her family and friends finding out she was a hooker, but look at her now! shes on 20/20! 😆

  4. queenie says:

Chick is a headcase…plain and simple

  5. vdantev says:

Broadcast that unvarnished truth about our leaders and how they are screwing us from day one, no one will tune in. Put on the scandalous bit of sleaze and 150 million people will watch. The Dumbening of the populace is simply staggering.

  6. Ana says:

It’s time for this woman to be gone from the media.
That said I’m surprised she said no to all those deals.

  7. Kate says:

You clicked the link too, vdantev 😀

  8. Trillion says:

If you have to pronounce yourself “bright” you probably are not.

  9. fancyfree says:

She is obviously not the smartest person, but I don’t judge her for what she did. Having known extreme poverty and sometimes desperation, I can understand what would lead someone to prostitution. I don’t know what her conditions were, but more power to her.

  10. laurie says:

She’s not very attractive is she? But that is terrible, to feel like the only thing you could do to support yourself was to sell your body. That is tragic and speaks volumes about how she feels about herself, crocodile tears or not.

  11. cara says:

Wow! I saw that and I got a totally different vibe. In answers where she could of bullshitted, she didn’t and I actually think she came off as rather bright, truthful and I actually liked her. (prior, just judging from her pics, I hadn’t) And when she’s speaking, she is very beautiful.

I think you guys may need to clean off your bs detectors, because this chick’s coming clean.

And P.s. with what Spitzor was doing in NY, karma was bound to come his way.

  12. IMO says:

This interview is problematic since it can help glorify and disguise what prostitution is.

Plain and simple- nobody is “buying” your companionship and by showing only the nice “things” you can buy with the money and her talking about it in such casual wording, can mislead some naive young girls who might find themselves stuck in some bad circustances.

I think the media was very easy on her.

  13. Larissa says:

She talks like oneself can´t pay for rent and bills having a regular job, wtf? “I had to go back to prostiution to pay my bills” my arse!
if ya were so bright ya wud´ve gone to college…
she is just a skank and enjoyed what she did and if it wasn´t for all the exposure she would be still doing it!

  14. Christina X says:

    I don’t understand.

    Why the tears now?

Methinks she’s crying because she can’t handle the negative press.

  15. vdantev says:

Kate: You clicked the link too, vdantev

I wouldn’t have been able to make a comment otherwise, Miss Smartypants 😛 I was referring to the TV coverage.

  16. eve says:

it’s all a ploy to get a leg up in the music business.

    hope it fails.

i’m tired of looking at her already.

  17. MSat says:

I watched the interview. this girl makes me ill. She wants us to believe that she had no other options but to support herself through prostitution. It’s a lie. She liked the money and how easy it was to make it. She liked the high-profile clients. Otherwise she would have kept waitressing or whatever. She had well-off parents who are now helping her financially- they would have helped her then too. The bottom line is, she liked showing herself off sexually. Some people are just sluts.

  18. Heidi says:

she is so full of it! her facial expressions are freaking hilarious, obviously the girl has been practicing!!

the escort prostitution question = 😆

  19. Antony says:

When will people realize there is no “sunny side” to prostitution?

    It’s illegal for a reason, people. 🙄

  20. wow says:

This girl makes me sick – everytime I see her picture I want to be sick. She personifies greed and love of money. She will do anything but honest work to get it. “Oh, I can’t get a job now the media would be all over me.” So she’s mooching off her parents – work, get off your slutty ass and stay away from married rich men. pig.

  21. Kate says:

    Haha, just sayin’! 😛

  22. Baholicious says:

“…and I can strip the chrome off a trailer hitch.”

@Antony: what two consenting adults choose to do in private and does not infringe on the rights of anyone else should not be illegal. There are a lot of perfectly happy prostitutes – not counting the streetwalkers – who defend what they do vociferously. They say they make a lot of money and compromise none of their self-respect doing so. It’s simply a transaction and they understand that.

  23. mollination says:

How come we equate a girl enjoying sex with being a skank as Larissa called her?

I don’t even think girls like her go to prostitution because they don’t believe they are capable of anything else anymore, I think they do it BECAUSE they ARE so arrogant. She is a greedy, lazy, phony wannabe-somebody who thinks she is HOT HOT shit. They’re a dime a dozen.

  24. vdantev says:

When will people realize there is no “sunny side” to prostitution?

It’s illegal for a reason, people.

Except in Japan, where the women are respected, unionized and protected and have excellent health care and generally treated as any other working class person.

  25. Feebee says:

“Except in Japan, where the women are respected, unionized and protected and have excellent health care and generally treated as any other working class person”

My sarcasm radar must be down… the quote above is a joke right?

  26. anon says:

I agree with dante, make it legal so these women have a support system, health care, etc.. And not pimps taking all their money!

  27. vdantev says:

Nope. That was the last I’d read on the subject, oops- except for the Yakuza running the show.

  28. heehee says:

Yes, there are plenty of ways people make ‘dirty money’, and lots of them are commonly accepted. And really, its only sex. You cant say its better when a man takes advantage of a woman just for sex in a sham ‘relatioship’ simply because thers no money exchanged. How about all the dinners and movies he ‘buys’ just to ‘get you’? Same thing. Better that she be paid to get used for his pleasure, IMO rather than strung along and lied to abot how much he cars when all he wants is— you get the point.
And it truly is only a matter of social conditioning to have this drastic response to something that everyone engages in- its sex, for pete’s sake and Im sue most if not all of you have or will do it. And? She got paid. And?? You all get paid too, I bet. (in your daily jobs whatever they are)
Really I dont see what the fuss is about. 😕

  29. doodahs says:

Heather Mills never really got away from the stigma of escorting… it’s kind of a sucky way to make your name..

  30. doodahs says:

    Umm, no pun intended 😯

  31. GimmeABreak says:

She’s full of more sh*t than a Christmas turkey. She had a normal life, with normal parents and smoked pot just like everyone else. She’s just trying to justify her bad decision to have sex for a living by sensationalizing her boring life. She’s a moron.

    Make her go away!!!

  32. Amy says:

Ick, if I hear one more woman say she “had” to turn to stripping or hooking, I’m gonna puke!

This is America, dammit. Fill out a FAFSA form (they are free!) and get a free college education. I came from a poor family, did exactly that, and am now living the suburban dream without all the guilt.

  33. JaundiceMachine says:

My problem isn’t so much with her profession, it’s her attitude. Like MSat said, it isn’t like she’s destitute – the girl is swimming in money, and she uses her body to manipulate others into getting what she wants.

She has no remorse (though she clearly knows enough to appear remorseful given her emmy-winning tear-jerker) just likes to f*ck for power and Gucci bags. That isn’t the kind of female empowerment Camille Paglia would approve of.

That being said, I like Ted Haggard’s “lady friend” more than this trick.
