Why did Justin Timberlake buy Jessica Biel $250,000 worth of engagement jewelry?

Do you know how much I love writing about jewelry? I wish I could write about jewelry every day. I wish more celebrities bought and gifted more jewelry, and they all issued press releases about the jewelry and we had lots of close-up photos of the pieces. Oh, and handbags!! I could spend all day on handbags and jewelry. Anyway, this is a story about jewelry, and it’s also a story about Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel. I never thought of Justin as a big gift-giver, nor do I think he really has an “eye” for ladies’ fashion or jewelry – judging by his choice for Biel’s engagement ring, he likes really big, gaudy pieces. Apparently, Justin is getting into the spirit of things, though, and he gave Jessica some additional bling to celebrate their engagement:

As if the $130,000 engagement ring that Justin Timberlake dropped on Jessica Biel back in December weren’t enough, he just showered her with a prewedding gift fit for a princess: $250,000 worth of jewelry! JT presented Biel with a stunning diamond necklace-and-bracelet set worth more than many American family homes.

“She’s ecstatic, she looks incredible in the set,” says an insider, who noted that JT had been planning to give her the jewelry for months, even using a shopping trip in May to jeweler Eli Halili’s store in NYC’s SoHo to gauge her tastes.

Even her engagement ring can’t compare to his sparkly gift, which is “easily worth a quarter of a mil,” the insider says. But Jessica and her family are thrilled because to them the present represents a lot more than its dollar value.

“It’s like he has finally made up his mind and is ready to spend the rest of his life with this woman,” the insider claims. The gems are all part of a trend of Justin showering Jessica with rocks after what has been a rocky relationship. Over the past four years, Star has reported him straying with no less than four separate women.

The jewelry seems to have a palliative effect. “The whole Biel clan is really excited… no one more so than Jessica, who finally – after all the heartache and tears – has landed the man of her dreams.”

[From Star Magazine, print edition]

You know what I got from that? Justin can (continue to) do whatever he wants with whoever he wants just as long as he continues to give Jessica nice jewelry. Is that an acceptable trade-off? If Jessica was hoping for true love, a love of commitment and mutual respect and fidelity, I would say it’s a crappy tradeoff. But I think Jessica is fine with Justin doing whatever and whoever, so maybe the jewelry is just a bonus. Would you have sex with Justin Timberlake for $250,000 worth of diamonds? I might consider it, honestly.

    Why? Because he’s an idiot?

      😀

      1) I wouldn’t have sex with him for any amount of money in the world. The guy is Screech 2.0.

      2) Jewelry is a good asset for her to have when this whole thing finally blows up. She values herself that little? To have shiny baubles over a person who has a modicum of respect for her? Sad panda is sad.

After a certain point, all the diamonds in the world become moot.

You can shower a woman with lots of pretty sparkly things, but eventually, pretty sparkly things cease to impress or distract. (says the woman whose husband-for-now just bought her a Lexus)

But I’m not wrong! It’s much easier to put in an appearance and bring a present than to “BE THERE” when you’re there.

    • Rhea says:

I second you. Life is easier with money than without, but that’s not the key to a real happiness. How are u doing original bellaluna? Do you get your husband-for-now to agree finding someone babysitting a bit so you could have some needed free time for yourself?

      • the original bellaluna says:

Thank you for asking. 🙂 I’m a little better today than yesterday, Rhea. To me, a car equals freedom. (I live in Podunk Nowhere, so no car means I’m trapped at home.) My schedule (and life) will no longer revolve around someone else’s (other than Toddles), which is SUCH a relief!

Hubs-for-now doesn’t mind if his younger brother comes over and watches Toddles (nor do I – he’s good with him) and he also helps with the housekeeping. Now that I have a car, I can go pick him up and take him home.

(You’ve no idea how much I want to tear-ass through town [a quarter mile, if that], honking and shouting “I got a new car, bitches!!” But that would just be vulgar. And it’s only “new” to me.)

Good for you, bella! You go girl!!

      • Rhea says:

LOL. 😀 Good for you, bellaluna. I live in the city so it’s easier to go everywhere and can’t imagine being stuck at home all day. Gahhhhh!!! The stress of being trapped in one place whole day!!! The car must be a Godsend for u. 🙂

I’m glad your condition got better now. 😉

Bellaluna: Been there on the husband-for-now thing. In our case, we worked it out, but it is definitely NO FUN dealing with someone’s midlife crisis or whateverthehellitis. Stay strong.

agreed, said the woman with a 5 carat engagement ring.

  3. lower-case deb says:

    them bangs! no bangs please!

    • the original bellaluna says:

I’m refusing to acknowledge the whole “bang trend;” just like I’m doing with the horse-hoof shoe trend and the lace doily dresses.

I’m with you Kaiser – I wish more stars would buy fabulous jewelry and take pictures so we could talk about it. They are the only ones who can afford it, so the least they could do is share i (with our eyes).

    • Amelia says:

I second this. Can we have a side jewellery blog?
Although I’m not sure I’m a fan of the necklace already, purely because they’re diamonds. Once a diamond’s been shipped to Amsterdam or Switzerland and cut, it’s impossible to trace the origin.
Unless they came from Canada, of course. But still, if it were me (and I’m quite jealous it’s not) I’d rather a pretty coloured stone that holds sentimental value or even a birth stone. Just so I’m safe in the knowledge I haven’t contributed to blood diamond trade. Diamonds are overrated ^^ cubic zirconias are IN ladies..!!!
Uh. Who am I kidding? -‘_-

    • bluhare says:

Me too. And handbag pr0n. I’d read it, Kaiser!

She’s one unattractive dude! No offense to dudes out there.

Well whenever I wear my jewels to the supermarket I always feel as though the cart is just gliding thru the aisles

    • Sloane Wyatt says:

Whenever I wear mine in the bathtub, the bubbles feel like I’m in a glass of fizzy champagne.

  7. Julie says:

i wouldnt wear those bangs for $250,000

  8. Erinn says:

People need to get off of this bang hating. It’s ridiculous. You can go ahead and hate allll you want on those itty bitty bangs that just cover the very top of the forehead – THAT is what I call bang trauma. I don’t see anything wrong with Jessica’s, or most of the other bangs people hate on.

  9. Lady_Luck says:

Not a fan of hers by any means, but have to say she looks great in that white dress, and the shoes – divine! As for the marriage, eugh, yuck, timberlake, how could one live with oneself. My suggestion is the jewellery is guilt speaking.

  10. CooCooCatchoo says:

Those hooves are huge. The shoes ain’t helping matters, either.
    Neigh snort snort!

  11. Hautie says:

So when did Jessica Biel become the girl who wears big gaudy jewelry? And I am not even going to discuss that unfortunate engagement ring.

This is a girl that constantly roams around looking like hell. No makeup, wearing warm-up’s and uggs kind of girl.

I can see gifting her with good standard pieces. Diamond studs would be a good gift. But big pieces that require a ball gown? Why?

    • the original bellaluna says:

You know, if I wasn’t such a laid-back, warm-ups and no make-up wearing girl in UGGS, I might be offended by that! 😀 (Totally serious about the no make-up and UGGS.)

  12. Susan says:

    Zzzzzzzzzzzzzz

  13. bea says:

How about the white cuffs on her sandals? Looks like she dropped her panties on the red carpet!

  14. Susie Q says:

He bought her jewellery because he screwed around on her and dumped her..he is buying her off with diamonds. She is trying to get her dignity back. They are both untalented and deserve each other.

  15. Ravensdaughter says:

    Diamonds ARE a girl’s best friend….
Re: bangs. Unfortunately, at least according to the Washington Post, bangs are “in”.

  16. Miss says:

Jewelry wh@re?! Absolutely! Accessories in general actually! Check out http://www.carriedandworn.com it just launched and its all super nice stuff. I could spend hours stalking accessory sites!

  17. Esther says:

I don’t buy this story since its from star magazine the same magazine that claimed he didn’t really love her and was cheating on her while they in New York a month ago. Now they are saying he realizes she’s the one they can’t seem to keep their stories straight. Also justin has always been a gift giver he’s bought all his girlfriends a lot of jewelry and other things.

  18. GreenTurtle says:

Photo assumption on the first one says Jessica is up her own *ss about how important she is because she’s JT’s fiancée. JT of course, as always, is pondering his own amazingness.

  19. Gene Parmesan says:

I think Justin just decides ‘hey let me get it over with’ and get married, make her happy and be a nice southern boy. But we all know he is not going to be faithful. I wouldn’t want the hope diamond with all those odds!

  20. mimi says:

This haircut is making her look so masculine and manly.

She should go for curls or waves. That would add much needed softness and a feminine touch.

  21. swansong says:

Now compare the comments to this story to the one about Brangelina’s engagement ring…

Surely there comes a point where you are just spending ridiculous amounts of money to feel rich, rather than for quality. God forbid the famous don’t have the most expensive item available to brag about 😛
