Did Kate Winslet finally “get the memo” about being nice to her fans?

LMAO. After a week of tabloid drama in which it seemed like Radar/Star Magazine was hellbent on calling Kate Winslet a C-U-Next-Tuesday, Kate Winslet was finally photographed smiling and waving. These are photos of Kate on the Massachusetts set of Labor Day, the same set where she apparently BROKE THE SOULS of a few hundred Winslet fan-girls who had been waiting in rain for even a glimpse of their idol. So… do you think Winslet’s PR team gave her a call and said, “Look, Kate, you need to wave at some paparazzi, smile for the cameras a little bit, just so this one media company will stop running stories about your repeated acts of stone-cold bitchery”? Because I think that’s exactly what happened.

Kate Winslet, in Mansfield yesterday to film scenes for her new flick “Labor Day,” redeemed herself in the eyes of a few Mass. fans, after complaints that the “Titanic” actress is snubbing her adoring public.

“There was a guy there holding up a sign that said, ‘Kate, please sign my poster,’ ” said Someone Who Was There. “Her driver came over, got the poster, brought it to Kate and she signed it, then he called the guy over and he was able to thank her.”

Winslet’s largesse came after reports that she had snubbed fans in Shelburne Falls and on a Virgin Atlantic flight to Boston.

Shelburne Falls resident Shanna Swan told Star maggie that the actress ignored a crowd of fans who had waited more than an hour in the rain to see her arrive on the set during filming in the small town last week. Earlier this month, mom Susan Roberts complained to RadarOnline that the star promised to give her two daughters some face time after they asked her for her autograph on a Virgin flight from London to Boston. She didn’t, but did, however, autograph a book for the gals.

“She seemed friendlier yesterday,” said our spy on the set. “At one point she did smile and wave to the crowd. She must have gotten the memo.”

Well done, Kate. Way to give in to the unreasonable demands of a handful of hysterical fan-girls who think they own you. I mean, of course there’s a happy medium. Kate is not required to be all things to all people, and I think it’s unfair to her (or to any celebrity) to expect that she drop everything to make a few Grumpies happy. But I do think Kate’s people told her that she needed to be shaking a few more hands, signing a few more autographs, and smiling a bit more. Which is fine. Hopefully, there won’t be another Radar story tomorrow about how Kate was only smiling because she had just kicked a puppy.

This pretty much summarises why I would never want to be famous. If you’re having a bad day you get ratted out.
And I’ve never understood the value of a scribble. I think that mother on the flight needs to find something else to do during the day rather than run to the tabloids.

  2. Krock says:

She doesn’t look like the happiest girl in the world does she? That 2nd pic has me scared.

Technically no, she owes nothing to the fans but I dunno, make an effort. These are the people purchasing your movie tickets. Would it (did it) kill ya to say hi or sign a couple? Sheesh. Hollywood these days.

  3. tooloose says:

someone send her a tweezer, please!

  4. TheOriginalKitten says:

See? That wasn’t so hard was it?

I can’t believe there was a guy carrying a sign that said “Kate Please sign my poster”.
Would have been funny if she signed it “F*ck you, Stan.”

Hehe. Hehehehe! BWAAAA-HAAAA!! Oh, sweet Jesus. I wish she would have!! Thanks for the chuckle :0

  5. velourazure says:

so i’m guessing this part isn’t a glamour role?

  6. Jessica says:

Oh give it a break! Is she supposed to be all made up each and every time she is living her normal life? Geeze.. I can only imagine how it is with people gawking and calling her name each time she goes out… then people call her names and get their panties in a wad if she doesnt smile and have a “let me kiss your ass” look on her face..lighten up people!

      i heart you!!!!

Yes, and I was just thinking she’s looking like the ‘old Kate’, again. I wonder if those are real bruises on her arm — in the crook of her elbow.
Reminds me of when I have blood drawn. Hope she isn’t ill. Anyway, I don’t think she needs tweezing or anything else.

I don’t see why actors get so much crap about refusing to sign autographs. . .they don’t owe the public anything. . . Most of them are probably moody and tortured as hell, so it must be hard to not be able to publicly have a bad day.

  8. I Choose Me says:

No fan of Kate these days but I totally agree with the write up of this article. Good thing I’m not famous. I don’t get touchy/feely or nicey nice with complete strangers and I have an issue with people invading my personal space so the paps and over zealous fans would get an earful from me. CANNOT stand entitlement. People would think me the bitchiest bitch to ever grace the silver screen.

  9. Cathy says:

She does owe the fans. At least a smile a wave. After all without the fans she is nothing. Fans go see her movies and buy the dvds. If they stop buying she has nothing, so yes she does owe fans at least the bare minimum.

  10. Lucy2 says:

I still think the other stories were ridiculous, but maybe her pr person did tell her to wave or whatever. Or she normally does try to acknowledge fans and there were different circumstances the other day. Who knows. I think judging someone based on a whiny person running to tabloids is a bit silly. maybe she is bitchy, who knows, but the two complaining about her had way too high expectations.

  11. scotchy says:

Do people not realize she is at work?she is an actress. she is going on set, we don’t know what sort of character she is playing what sort of scene she has to shoot, and it could be that she is just getting her head into her role so that she can do her job. which is ACT, not sign autographs and wave at fans. This is ridiculous.

  12. Luffy says:

Have to disagree with the whole “actors don’t owe the public anything” sentiment. They owe us everything. You know why? Because everything from their fabulous homes, wardrobes, endorsement deals, acting roles, cars, influential friends, and adoring public is given to them by us. A star is not self made. They are made by the people. When the stars get tired of kissing the asses of fans then ill assume that they are also tired of their extravagant lifestyles and I will stop seeing their films/tv shows and stop buying all their crappy products. I stars sometimes forget that they are not special incredibly deserving people who have some how earned the right to be human gods and goddesses. No one deserves that. Maybe the acclaim and respect, but never the superiority. I think everyone should remember that.

  13. Tansey says:

This really irks me. Newsflash to crazy celebrity fans: celebs don’t owe you jack s**t so stop acting like entitled brats! If I were in Kate Winslet’s shoes, I’d avoid people even MORE now. Just because someone is famous does not mean they have to cater to their “fans” every beck and call. They have just as much right to walk down the street minding their own business and not be called “rude” as any non famous person does.

  14. Nan209 says:

I promise that I will never expect a celebrity to bow and scrape before me just because I’ve paid money for their product and they can expect that I’ll never bow and scrape before them just because I know their name and face.

  15. Jax says:

We had an exchange services. They made a movie or whatever, I paid to see it. Job done. They entertain me or not, that’s our transaction, our deal. If you don’t entertain me, I won’t go out of the way to subsidize films you bankroll. However it’s not the stars job to entertain me outside of that narrow 2 hour or so window I paid for. Otherwise I should be shelling out more money to do so like some rich people do to get famous people to come to their parties. Their time is valuable to them in someway and I don’t own it. If I hear their morals don’t work with mine and I can’t separate the character from the person I won’t support them. Hasn’t truly happened, so I can dislike people like Mel Gibson but still watch his work. If a person is a bastard in real life it makes it even more interesting they can play a compelling sympathetic character that is better then their real life persona. So if you think Kate is the happy go lucky person you see in some of her films that owes you her time, well that’s on you, but I feel you’re wrong to think that way.

  16. Feebee says:

No she doesn’t owe anyone anything but it wasn’t really that hard was it. She is an actor after all, how gruelling it is to fake a smile and throw up a hand? She does look like she faking that smile 🙂

  17. kibbles says:

Some of you are saying she looks plain here but I think this is the youngest and most naturally beautiful she has looked in a while. She doesn’t look tweaked, Photoshopped, wearing tight designer outfits, or like she has had a pound of makeup slathered on her face. Her hair style reminds me of her Titanic days when she had the curly red hair and was so fresh faced and friendlier looking.

I am a bit undecided on all of this recent gossip about her being unkind towards her fans. A part of me agrees that she deserves her privacy and has the right to refuse signing autographs if she has had a bad day or is preoccupied with other more important business. That is me stating her basic rights without consideration of the fact that she is a public figure and has a public persona to worry about. This extends to many of us who aren’t famous as well. I’m in a career where I interact with many people. Yes, it is my right not to be friendly to people I meet at events, but is it good for my career? No, absolutely not.

Another side of me thinks that smiling and waving to fans is the least she can do, you know? If I’m on an eight hour flight in business class, and some kids in the same section want to meet me, I think I would set aside five minutes after my nap to bring the kids over, shake their hands, and sign a few autographs. Being rich and famous is a gift. More celebrities need to remember that they wouldn’t be where they are today if it wasn’t for those enthusiastic fans who spend thousands of dollars on movie tickets, DVDs, CDs, posters, magazines, etc.

I wouldn’t be judging Winslet as harshly if it wasn’t for all the bad press she has brought onto herself in recent years with her snide and hypocritical comments about weight and looks as well as her recent comments dissing My Heart Will Go On. I was a huge fan of her a decade ago but have seen her slowly transform into another Hollywood diva obsessed with the superficiality of the business. She seems to act like she can’t be bothered with the little people both in real life and in her interviews. I hope someone close to her gives her a wake-up call to change her attitude.
