Michael Fassbender will star & produce film based on game ‘Assassin’s Creed’

These are some shots from Michael Fassbender’s appearance on the June cover of GQ France. It looks like a completely different photo shoot from Michael’s GQ US shoot. A lot of you have been wondering why I haven’t been writing about Michael lately – it’s because there really isn’t that much new information about him now that the Prometheus publicity tour is over. I think he’s in Louisiana right now, working on Twelve Years a Slave with Steve McQueen (and Brad Pitt, Benedict Cumberbatch and Chiwetel Ejiofor). He hasn’t been giving interviews and he hasn’t done any new photo shoots. It’s very sad to think that we’ll have no big Fassbender news for months and months, right? Because he doesn’t have anything else coming out until NEXT YEAR! *sob*

So let’s say a quiet prayer that Michael’s personal life gets exciting – like, he gets someone pregnant, or he finally makes his way to Virginia to declare his love to me (or both of those things!!!) – so I don’t have to keep on finding stuff like this to cover. Because I have no idea what I’m talking about here – I’m not a gamer. I have no idea about any of this. Michael Fassbender might be starring and producing a film “adaptation” of the video game Assassin’s Creed…?

Michael Fassbender will star in and co-produce “Assassin’s Creed,” the bigscreen adaptation of Ubisoft’s videogame franchise, through his DMC Film. While Fassbender’s profile has risen with roles in “X-Men: First Class,” “Shame,” “Haywire,” “Prometheus,” and will next be seen in “The Counselor” and “Twelve Years a Slave,” thesp also has spent the past year developing films with Conor McCaughan. Together, they produced the short “Pitch Black Heist.”

“Assassin’s Creed” is the duo’s most high-profile project, given that the game is Ubisoft’s biggest franchise, selling over 30 million units since 2007. A third “Assassin’s Creed” game bows Oct. 30 and is set during the American Revolution. First two take place during the Crusades and Renaissance.

Plot revolves around a man who learns his ancestors were trained assassins after he is kidnapped by a secret org with ties to the Knights Templar, and sent back in time to retrieve historical artifacts.

“Michael Fassbender was our first choice” to play the franchise’s iconic hooded hero, said Jean-Julien Baronnet, CEO of Paris-based Ubisoft Motion Pictures. “Michael (Fassbender) is an extremely smart, talented, versatile and committed actor.”

Last fall, Ubisoft was in talks with Sony to develop a series of “Assassin’s” pics (Daily Variety, Oct. 20, 2011). But the companies have since put negotiations on hold.

Ubisoft execs now plan to stick to their initial plan and develop the film independently in order to maintain greater creative control. Last year, Ubisoft invested in launching UMP, headed by Baronnet, former CEO of Luc Besson’s EuropaCorp, to adapt the company’s games into films, TV shows and digital projects.

While Sony could still wind up distribing the films, UMP will package the project with a writer and director before resuming talks with the studio.

“We’re open to re-discuss with the key studios once the production package is finalized,” Baronnet told Variety.

It’s all Greek to me. I guess I’m excited to hear that Fassy could be signing on to a new movie, and that the movie will probably be a big-budget action-adventure type thing, because he really doesn’t do those kinds of films all that often. I guess you could count X-Men: First Class in there…? Fassy was wonderful in that. He’s good at action-drama, and he’s very fit and athletic. Physically and talent-wise, I think he’s up for this. But is it a good project? I don’t know. You tell me.

Well, my husband is going to shizz himself over this news. (And he has no clue who Fassbender is and wouldn’t care. But he loves that game.) So this is good news for both of us!

  2. Amelia says:

    HOHMYGOD HOMYGOD HOMYGOD!!!!!!
I am an out and proud geek and my brother got me hooked on video games when I was 8 and today is all my birthdays come at once!!!!

    *ahem*
Anywho. Love Assassin’s Creed. Fassy will be perfect for this (I hope Nolan North gets a shout out though). Really hope they base it on Assassin’s Creed II – there’s something about Renaissance Italy that I just love.
And if any other CB’ers need a little encouragement to get excited about this – I predict the Fassdong will make an appearance. All the past Assassins in the games seemed to shag anything in sight.

    • gloaming says:

Can’t you just see Fassy flirting with the prostitutes……

But they have to start with Altair!

    • couldn't help it says:

Ehh, I love Fassy… I LOVE Assassins Creed, but sadly I really don’t see them melding. I really can’t picture Mr. Irish as Enzo.

      • couldn't help it says:

dang it. Ezio, not Enzo. I swear I have played this game =P

      • NM6804 says:

        Yes and Yes.

Why can’t Hollywood come up with original ideas instead of butchering up games and books?! WHY?

Altaïr, Desmond and Ezio are awesome characters, I don’t want to see any actor’s taint on it. Any.

I don’t know, playing those games I felt “connected” to their stories. You get sucked in to the plot and the circumstances they are in and now Hollywood is going to write a shitty plot no doubt and ruin the AC legacy. You can never fully write a script about such a complex long game without leaving out key points and/or rewriting certain characters. I’m pissed.

Besides, Bollywood already AC as an inspiration for a film and while it’s funny, it’s just not right. AC is too big of a franchise to touch imo.

    Awesome news!

The Assassins Creed series are my favourite games- the game play in the first one was iffy, but the character in the first game ‘Altair’ was a badass and Fassbender would be perfect to play him!

    • Goofpuff says:

Unless Fassy can look Arabic, he would not be able to be Altair. He can only play Enzio. Altair is more badass than Enzio. Also Desmond is Arabic so Fassy can’t play him either.

  4. саша says:

*SCREAMING* i might be hyperventilating a little bit.

  5. T.C. says:

Thank you, thank you, thank you Kaiser for new Fassy pictures. So hot on the cover. The things I would do to this man’s body goes without saying. Not a gamer so no idea what the heck Assain’s Creed is. LOL.

  6. Micha says:

I havent commented in months but this just took my breath away. Assassins creed is THE SH*T. With the fassdong its gonna be awesome! Thank you for letting us know 🙂

    • emma bee says:

      me too!

huffpost says fass is playing desmond…maybe he can make desmond cool bc gods knows desmond was nothing compared to ezio.

  7. Katt says:

AC is actually a very huge gaming blockbuster, so this should fair extremely well at the box office.
I couldn’t think of anyone that is more suited to suit up in AC gear, and i’m so excited to follow this project!

In short, Fassy’s going to be sitting pretty on a good chunk of change when the movie premieres.

  8. carrie says:

the movie adaptations of video game always were awful but why not!

  9. RocketMerry says:

Cool! Now that’s one thing I’ll go see. Go Fassy!

  10. TheOriginalKitten says:

    YAY! Fassy finally.
Not particularly excited about Assassin’s Creed but whatever-any Fassy is good Fassy!

  11. Chatcat says:

Kaiser…finally some Fassy coverage THANK YOU.

Since I dumped JoeMang over the blonde burlesque dancer he’s hooking up with reported last Thursday, I have been feeling a little down and out. Now I have a Fassy fix and I don’t care what it is about I just needed some news about a real man. Whew…

  12. Linda says:

Omg my sister’s gonna freak when I tell her they’re making an actual movie out of her fave video game. I can’t wait to see this!

  13. Samigirl says:

Finally, a Fassy film my husband will go see with me! 🙂

    • Mary says:

What about the X-men movie? That’s a guy movie isn’t it?

      • Samigirl says:

He doesn’t like X-Men. We own First Class and he refuses to watch it with me. He’s a gamer but not into comics.

  14. MarcyParcy says:

as long as Uwe Boll is not directing this movie, it should be awesome.
(if you are married to a gamer, you’ll know who that is because you may have been forced to sit through a terrible video game related film. like Farcry.)

    • Aagje says:

If Fassy is foolish enough to work with him, I will officially have lost any respect for him.

The ginger-love will be no more…

  15. v says:

    That’s really cool!Can’t wait.

  16. Stacie says:

Thanks for giving me some Fassy today . It’s really Hot here in NC so I totally needed this . He’s so Beautiful in the photos ! Love him . 🙂

  17. LucyOriginal says:

This is going to be a good day, 🙂

Thanks to Kaiser for posting it!

  18. KittyCal says:

Gamer nerd alert! Played Assassin’s Creed, AC II, AC: Brotherhood, and AC: Revelations. Definitely psyched for this if it will even be close to the live action short they produced for Brotherhood. Not into Fassbender myself(more of a Cillian Murphy girl) but I think he will do well with the role Very excited!

  19. cheesehead says:

Okay, first, I lovelustadore Michael Fassbender. Absolutely, 100% (I have a thing for gingers) That said, if they put Fassy in any role outside of Desmond, all I can see is an F-up as big as Prince of Persia or Doom when those came to the big screen. Assassin’s Creed is my number one all time favorite game, played em all, so please, while I love to see the gorgeous ginger in just about anything (or nothing at all), please, not this. It made me cringe just as much as the idea of Mark Walberg being considered to play Nathan Drake if they bring Uncharted to the big screen.

  20. Sarah says:

This could be awesome, I love Assassin’s Creed!

  21. dizzy says:

    Love this news!

  22. VA says:

He’s a bit older than Desmond is. Desmond is in his early twenties.
Why couldn’t they use Francisco Randez? Francisco’s face was used to model ezio, altaïr and desmond’s faces.
    Unless Francisco can’t act. 😀

  23. Amy says:

My boyfriend (who’s not a gamer) and I have a couple’s crush on Fassbender. We watched Blood Creek last night and Centurion a few nights ago. Blood Creek, in particular, was interesting because it’s a monster B-movie (released well before he became the ‘It’ boy here in America) and Fassy plays the monster!

  24. Jordan says:

Nom nom nom nomy nom nom! I would sop him up with a biscuit like he was maple syrup.

  25. LoL says:

    That’s one ugly domestic abuser.

  26. Aud says:

I love the game and can’t wait to see how it’ll turn out.

  27. iseepinkelefants says:

Yay! An Assbender post. Finally. The photos are plain, but gorge.

I’m not really down with him going all Hollywood Blockbuster but whatev if it gets him on the screen. What happened to that other movie he was producing (the Irish folktale one)?

I’m really surprised no fans have spotted him in LA. Knowing him he’s got to be trolling the bars.

    • Shel says:

There have been plenty of sightings. You need to check tumblr. They’re all there. And his gf is there with him, also.

  28. MB says:

The Assassins Creed games were based on a series of books orginally, so there is a good chance that the movies will be OK as I assume they will largely trade on the dialogue developed for the novels.

  29. LittleDeadGirl says:

This is the best news I’ve heard in a long time. I love the game and I love Fassbender. I could see him doing a great job with it. I just hope they actually do the movie justice and this isn’t going to be a repeat of f’ing Prince of Persia.

  30. thekman says:

Why are people complaining about “hollywood” not being original? This is Ubisoft wanting to do the movie. If they want to do a movie, let them.

  31. Carolyn says:

Fassy be still my beating heart. He was the only good thing in Centurion. Thank you Kaiser for introducing him to me. This movie had better be good. It had better not be like Mortal Kombat!!

  32. tmnt says:

    great fit for assassin’s creed
