The death penalty isn’t really politics… I meant economic and foreign related issues. I don’t know why it matters either or why those loons are acting like this is proof they hate each other.

As long as Daddy stays ON politics and OFF race, religion, ethnicity, or sexual orientation, we can argue without anyone getting truly mad. However, he threw in a racial comment a few days ago, and I was appalled (see above). I am still not sure if he was just trying to yank my chain or if he was serious, but he got a lot more than he bargained for.
The longer I live away from their town, the more I realize how insulated the thinking is. What disturbs me is that that approach to race or religion or sexual orientation could just as easily be applied to gender. But my dad can’t see it that way. He says he raised me to be strong and independent and that I deserved anything I could earn…but it could have easily gone the other way. I could easily have been told that since I’m female, I’m intrinsically inferior in some way and should have a husband to lead my household. And that’s terrifying. President Obama and Anderson Cooper have exactly as much control over their race and sexual orientation as I do my gender. So how dare anyone, anywhere, use it as a weapon against them, or a reason why they should not deserve EVERYTHING they can earn?

It’s been a year of learning since I moved away from TN…and boy am I grateful.

My dad made a raciest comment the other day and I fl*pped my sh*t. Then my mother was yapping about being disrespectful to him, and my response was that under no circumstances would I EVER tolerate any racism, and I would not disguise disgust under respect or courtesy. I love my dad, but any racist comments are the fastest way to lose my respect and access to their only grandson. He dropped it pretty quickly. They live in a very small, insular community where the politics and the power are white men, and they fit the mold. Mr. Tarheel and I are raising our son 5 hours away, and while we want him with his grandparents as much as possible, the first time I witness a racist remark or derogatory term, or my son comes home saying one, I will cut off any unsupervised access. I don’t care about the generation-it should never be tolerated. How can I be an example for my son if I tolerate bigotry and racism from my parents? There are some things that are wrong, no matter who you are, your age, your religion.

I don’t know how old Jane Pitt is, but I’m around people in their 70s and 80s a lot due to family circumstances. People of that generation do sometimes say the damndest things. They don’t understand political correctness and don’t care, so sometimes things come out that can make you cringe to your boots.

Mentioning his second name is like pointing out he’s a muslim, which he is actually not. If I need to point that out, it’s probably because I have a problem with it – otherwise I would not need to mention it. It’s not religion, when people refuse to fly with men who “look” like terrorists – it’s also racism – they judge them because of their looks. Same goes for Obama.

It’s like the campaign of Donald Trump (if I’m informed right), when they forced Obama to show his birth certificate – such a shame! For me, that’s racism. And I’m really convinced Mrs. Pitt is racist. She would probably never appreciate a black president.

But CT girl, as long as we both don’t know her personally, I guess we can’t say exactly what it is – for me it’s racism, but feel free to call it bigotry – in the end it’s a shame, especially in 2012.

She said they do have heated debates. And that they disagree on the death penalty. I don’t get why that is an issue. She is liberal on some things and conservative on others. If you ask most Americans are the same.

I think about James Carville and his wife, Mary Matalin; totally different sides politically. They are still together and have 2 daughters. So normal people can disagree on politics and still have solid relationships.

I agree with mama Pitt. I can’t stand Obama. I think he’s destroying the country and is a HUGE socialist. See…I’m entitled to my opinion. If you wish to oppose me, go ahead, I won’t change my mind…I still can’t stand the baby murdering, non U.S. citizen, hoodlum, socialist, egomaniac thing called Obama…or Barry Santoro should I say. For the first time in my life, I’m embarassed by my President. He’s a complete joke.
