No way Katie's speaking. It would have definitely been part of the divorce deal to reveal nothing indefinitely! Suri, well, that's a different story. Only we'll be waiting a long time for that!

I wonder why this cult is still given a IRS pass on taxes when it's clearly not a religion but a self help group, the only people in the "religion" who think that way are the lawyers and tax people. The members admit openly they are a self help group, so therefore not tax exempt.

What religion has a prison, sends you to religious exile under conditions less than the Geneva Convention right here in the good ol' USA? Who are they buying off in Congress to keep this status because they need to be defeated in the next election. Let's not forget the deaths, no insurance, child labor violations, violence to members and the never ending fund raising which goes primarily into Miscaviage's hands. He's accrued nearly a Billion dollars tax free with less than 10 thousand members who are dying under the weight of non stop fund raising. It's a scam that needs to be stopped immediately. If not sooner.

Excommunication doesn't make you non-Catholic. It just means officially that you're barred from taking communion (the Eucharist, the host, that little piece of unleavened or leavened bread...) which is usually part of the Mass although it can be given any time, anywhere. In reality, it's up to the priest or other person carrying the host - quite a few are pretty loose about it, even giving it to non-Catholics who want to participate. And if the priest doesn't know you're ex-communicated, he won't blink an eye... It doesn't really seem to be a big deal nowadays. At one time the threat of ex-communication was used as an attempt to dissuade people from doing majorly bad things. My guess is that many American priests and bishops at least don't really agree with some of the applications of it and just ignore it. I can't imagine any priests I've known refusing communion to someone who wanted it. I suppose there are still some rigid types who would, but it's probably a dying breed.

People often don't realize how varied and evolving the Catholic church is - it's old and big and usually slow to change, but change does happen once enough people want it. In my childhood, I never would have imagined altar girls (giving the Vatican conniptions), English Mass (I did miss the Latin...), tossing of traditions such as head covering for women in church (a Kleenex held by a bobby pin fulfilled the requirement) and no more meatless Fridays (to my great dismay, the non-meat options for many processed foods declined as a result). An American bishop was asked about 20years ago about female priests, and he speculated that maybe they already existed. He said it would just take one retired bishop (nothing to lose) to administer the sacrament of Holy Orders on a woman and the deed would be done. He himself didn't find the idea of women as priests outlandish at all. And there actually are married male priests already, generally converts from related churches who were already married and ordained. Some ordinations in other churches are recognized as going back to the original bishop Peter the Apostle, depending on whether the chain was unbroken or not during schisms.

Bet she's already baptized. Her mom definitely identified as Catholic when she was born and Tom told her she could be Catholic and into Scientology. If Suri wasn't baptized in a church ceremony (not sure why not), Katie or her parents or anybody (even a non-Catholic or a heretic like me) could have done it any time. Just say "I baptize you in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit", usually making the sign of the cross but not essential, and sprinkle a little water (or whatever liquid you have handy) on the baby's head. No dunking required. Catholics baptize them very young, and if there is any problem with the birth (or a miscarriage) or reason to believe the baby might die, they will do it on the spot. Baptism does not require a priest or a church. Neither does the sacrament of matrimony, actually- the priest is a witness but the couple administers the sacrament themselves. Just another Catholic factoid... You can see I paid attention in school.

I don't think she ever left. She said a long time ago that she could be both Catholic and Scientologist. If you're baptized Catholic as a baby, that's what you are even if you don't attend Mass etc. until you yourself decide you're not (heretics like me). "Registering" at a parish must just mean getting your name and address on a mailing list for parish business if you want to be definitely associated with a particular parish. There's no requirement for it. Catholics attend Mass at any convenient church without prior notice (my mom chose many Sundays according to which one had the latest Mass...). No biggie.

There are no more pedophiles among Catholics than in any group, there are just a heck of a lot of Catholics in the US (at least 25% of the population) and in the world (50% of all Christians). So the numbers look big when incidents reach the media. But a vow of celibacy doesn't make a man a pedophile... Really, think about it. Children are most likely to be molested within the family, especially by non-celibate fathers. Pedophiles who have access to children in isolated situations (parents, priests, ministers, rabbis, teachers, coaches, scout leaders, etc.) are dangerous. But are all coaches pedophiles because of Sandusky? That situation was covered up for many years also, because that's what has been done for ages everywhere. Protestant churches protected their pedophiles and other sexual predators, too. Things are changing, and that's good. But I wouldn't keep children away from Catholic priests any more than I would keep them away from gym class and Little League or scouts. Just make sure to keep an open line so the kid can safely report anything that makes him or her feel uncomfortable, and make sure your kids know that they can say no to an adult.

Co-sign EVERYTHING you said.
Can we stop with constant Catholic bashing? I know USA is not a Catholic country, but...I live in a country that's 78% Catholic and pretty normal, and abortion is legal and free in all parts of the country, and no protestors are waiting outside, threatening doctors or women...and that can't be said for every part of USA, can it? Still, I don't call you regressed, misogynist and crazy, do I? Even more so, you won't hear such generalization and critic of other Christian or non-Christian beliefs. We are more inclined to criticize Cath. Church, our own, bc we know the problems we face, locally.
One other thing: usually, Francois Xavier communities are kept by the the Order of St. Francois (st. Franjo in my country), who are known for their tolerance, help for the poor and love for all things on earth since beginning of their Order (Francois was so kind, animals adored him, legend says). Essentially, they are very well known for their HUMANITY. In those days of early middle age, that was something completely new.
