Thandie Newton: “I’ll be 40 this year, but honestly would not consider surgery”

You guys have yelled at me for disliking Thandie Newton in previous posts, so I just thought I would put the disclaimer up front once again: Thandie is just one of those people I dislike. I have “reasons” and I could put a fancy spin on it, but my default has always been “God, I just dislike her.” I’m not even going to try to rationalize it at this point, because you’ll just yell at me even more. Anyway, Thandie has a new interview with Hello Magazine where she’s discussing her promotional work with Olay and whether or not she’ll get plastic surgery. The full interview is here, and here are some highlights:

Thandie is a juicer: “I get up early to take my daughters to school and then I come home for a sleep! [Doing] Death and the Maiden [on stage in London] was tiring, but I loved working in front of a live audience very night. Acting on stage is every actor’s dream. At the start of the play I wasn’t feeling great. I had no energy, I was tired, I wasn’t eating well and I was putting on weight. Then I started following the juicing recipes in Elizabeth Peyton-Hones’s book Eat Yourself Young and I honestly feel fantastic. Now, I juice everything I can get my hands on.”

Thandie on skincare: “Generally, I am low maintenance, but during the run of the play I had to wear a lot of eye make-up, which meant using a great cleaner. I apply Neal’s Yard Rose Beauty Balm, work it in, then remove it with a flannel rinsed with warm water. It dissolves everything. After that I just need a few dabs of Olay moisturiser. I have combination skin, so I apply it just the dry areas. My mum used Olay when I was called Oil Of Olay and she has beautiful skin, so now I use it.”

Skincare tips: “In the morning I never cleanse. I just splash my face with water and pat it dry. I honestly think that the human body is a clever thing and that the natural oils my skin produces are best for it. Then I apply a dab of rouge and I’m off. When I am a mum on the school run I don’t wear make-up at all.”

She puts turmeric in her moisturiser! “Olay does a great tinted moisturiser that I had a little turmeric to – making it more yellow depending on my skin tone and the season. That’s a great trick for all women who find that foundations are too ashy or too pink for their skins. And it’s anti-inflammatory. It’s my secret weapon.”

Whether she would ever consider plastic surgery: “I’ll be 40 this year, but honestly would not consider surgery; all my beauty icons are women with expressive faces. Isabelle Huppert ages so beautifully and gracefully, as have Maggie Smith and Judi Dench. I am struck by their expressive beauty.”

Whether her race helped or hindered her career: “Actually, it worked in my favour as there were so few young black British actresses. I went straight into film – and look at how many slaves I played! But I have worked constantly and things are more positive now. I used to get angry, but Oprah Winfrey said to me: “Everything has a process; some things take time.” Now I am cast in a colour-blind way, which is ideally how we should all be judged. I see myself as utterly fortunate.”

[From Hello Magazine]

I believe her about plastic surgery for several reasons – one, she just doesn’t look tweaked to me. At all. I theorized that perhaps Thandie’s stone-cold bitchery was keeping her young looking, but I think she’s also got great genes, and she obviously takes care of her skin. As for whether she’ll get work done in the future – I think we have to judge British actresses on a different curve than we judge American actresses. My opinion: the overwhelming majority of British (quality) actresses don’t mess with their faces. Of course, it is starting to happen in drips and drabs, notably (IMO) Kate Winslet. Still, I’m buying what Thandie is selling. Literally – I love Olay, and I swear by it. I love the Olay Age-Defying Night Cream!!

Oh, and never in my life have I ever heard of, nor would I even consider it a possibility to add turmeric to get a different “tint” to a moisturizer. That’s such a weird/interesting thing to do!

no surgery needed she’s beautiful “as is”

  2. cmc says:

Of course she wouldn’t get surgery. Look at her! She glows. I don’t know anything about her from a gossip standpoint, but she looks absolutely fantastic.

  3. RocketMerry says:

    And she shouldn’t. She’s gorgeous!

  4. Bite me aka aniston says:

All I know about her is that her and Pitt dated back in the day… Anyway gorgeous skin tone

  5. lucy2 says:

She is very pretty, I hope she doesn’t ever do any tweaking.

    • Jilli says:

Do we discount her nose job in her early years?

      • A says:

Jili were you there when she had the nose job? No? Well then how do you know? I really doubt she’s had a nose job. If anything she’s grown into her nose which wasn’t even big to begin with. In fact, it was tiny, as was/is the rest of her face.
Just watch “flirting” and you’ll see for yourself.

  6. cupidityrox! says:

I don’t like her either.. Dunno exactly why.. I just get this vibe from her..
But she’ll look better if she put on a little weight

  7. Mitch Buchanan Rocks! says:

The turmeric tip is very interesting – gonna try it.

  8. LAK says:

My mom told me about tumeric! i add it to foundations/concealers because depending on season and the changing yellow tones in my skin, nothing on the market fits my shade of skin exactly.

  9. beyonce's bump says:

Kaiser, I do not like when u don’t give explanations as to why you dislike someone! At least give a reason…sheeesh.

  10. Dana M says:

I love cooking with tumeric!! It’s so good for you!! Im gonna try mixing it in my moisturizer when I have pimples!! What a great idea.Tumeric has anti bacterial agents.

  11. sunmoonstars says:

Oh here we go with the starlet lying about how they’ll never get work done, then showing up with a completely different face in a few years. Desperate for publicity, whoever you are? It’s never smart to back yourself into a corner with these things…jeez, don’t these celebs ever learn?

  12. Eleonor says:

I didn’t know her, I thought she was in her late 20’s!!!
She should start a beauty line with Jim Parsons.

  13. Janet says:

She doesn’t need surgery. We have an old saying, “Good black don’t crack”.

    • nate says:

I have heard “black don’t crack”, but never combined with the word “good”. What is “good black”? Also, your statement implies there is a “bad black”, so what is that?

  14. ella says:

I have really grown to like Thandi. She used to annoy me too, because I got an arrogant vibe from her, but then I realized I was just annoyed by the way she carries herself. She has a lot of poise and class, and that should be a GOOD thing.

  15. Mar says:

What kind of surgery is she even talking about? So now all 40 yr old are getting surgery?

    • SLM says:

Exactly. I just turned 40 too and it hasn’t crossed my mind to get surgery yet. News at 11:00!

I supposed in the entertainment business where young girls are monkeying with their faces in their twenties maybe this expectation is becoming standard.

I like my lines… I’ve earned them. Maybe in 20 years, when the procedures have improved and the result isn’t waxy cat-face with puckery lips…

  16. TheOriginalTiffany says:

She is stunning. Always has been. Never mess with your face girl, because it is amazing the way it is!

  17. lamamu says:

I get annoyed when the genetically gifted poo-poo plastic surgery. On the other hand, I get annoyed when the genetically ungifted get plastic surgery… However, someone like Thandie Newton should keep her mouth shut when it comes to that subject. She only comes across as ungenerous. Also, I seem to think she had a nose job in the early/mid 90’s.

  18. Shaishai says:

I went and read the full piece and found this:
“When I went to Mexico and the Congo, the beauty of the women was astounding. I just wanted to give every woman a red lipstick – not to change them, but to celebrate them.”

I dunno why, but something about that comment just rubs me the wrong way. Anyone else feel the same?

  19. Tori says:

    Bitter much, lamamu?

    • lamamu says:

About what precisely? I’m not aware of any bitterness re: TN, but maybe you know me better than I do based on a few sentences of opinion posted on a gossip website. Lighten up, kitten.

  20. Salam says:

I love using turmeric on my face! It’s an old Indian remedy for getting rid of acne and hyperpigmentation, and making the skin glow. I mix it with yogurt and honey and use it as a mask.

  21. Stacie says:

I just Love Thandie , she so beautiful and one of the most underrated actresses in Hollywood. She always seems like a very nice and smart lady … like Hollywood had Not gone to her head . Thanks for posting ! 🙂

  22. RHONYC says:

    YAAAWWN.

  23. Craigory says:

    Zoe Saldana > Thandie Newton

    I feel like they’re kind of interchangeable…?

  24. Patrice says:

I love Thandie’s claim (like so many other previously worked on actresses **cough Rachel Wiesz seriously obvious nose job cough**) that she would never “consider” plastic surgery when she has become increasingly caucasian over the years! Seriously, check out her natural, medium/dk brown skin color and original, round nose, in her early movies c.a. “Interview with a Vampire”.

Sadly, Thandie, like my one time favorite Mindy Kaling has fallen to the curse or skin-lightening too (Mindy being something I only noticed in recent magazine interviews and promos for her new doctor tv show.) She’s about four shades lighter now than she was during the first few seasons of the office!! As a mixed race woman of color (like Thandie), this makes me so sad 🙁

    • A says:

I guess you missed the part where she said her skin changes with the season…much like yours and mine and every other human being on this planet.
I am Thandie’s skin tone, and in summers I naturally get darker and winters I get much lighter and for some reason people find this so strange.
Black skin is just like white skin, depending on the season it gets lighter/darker – What is there not to understand about that?
I find it so annoying when people like you accuse others of using skin lighteners – What the hell? It’s just weird to me, we’re not aliens or none humans, we have skin that gets tan in summers and pale in winters too. Sheesh.

And skin lighteners could never achieve a natural look, most have ashy blotchy skin from using skin lighteners.
And I really don’t think Thandie’s had a nose job, watch the movie “flirting” her nose is the same!

      • LAK says:

THIS. See FLIRTING people, then make a judgement.

      • banga says:

take a look at her bridge here. she certainly has had a nose job.

        http://www.instyle.com/instyle/package/print/0,,20233390_20527422_20290372,00.html

your face will certainly change with age, but the bridge of your nose will not get narrower without surgical intervention.

      • lena80 says:

        Thank you!

NEWSFLASH…BLACK PEOPLE CAN TAN…THAT’S RIGHT FOLKS…WE GET LIGHTER OR DARKER DEPENDING ON THE SEASON.

If you need an example of a person of color bleaching google Sammy Sosa and ask yourself if that looks natural. Then google pics of Thandie and ask yourself what is abnormal about her complexion. So tired of people saying that brown/black people are bleaching because they don’t what TRUE skin bleaching looks like and they are too ignorant to comprehend the fact that we can get lighter or darker depending on the season.

  25. Jag says:

She has gorgeous skin. One thing I do notice is that she doesn’t smile in a large way. If your smile doesn’t touch your eyes, you won’t be getting crows feet. So I can see how she would have less lines than most people.

  26. Otterette says:

I had no opinion about Thandie Newton until I saw this. Kinda blew me away, it’s inspiring and powerful.
