Russell Brand admits he “was really into the idea of marriage and having children”

Russell Brand

I always get a kick out of Russell Brand’s self-constructed “uniforms.” As opposed to his yogi uniform, Russell’s wearing (in this photo) his usual deranged, ripped uniform that he wears everywhere else including to testify in front of Parliament. I have to say that I prefer this look, and even though he looks like he smells of patchouli and last night’s sex, I still find him irresistable from a safe distance.

Now onto the subject of this story, for Russell has called into Howard Stern’s radio show to promote his new FX show, “Brand X.” Naturally, Howard steered the conversation elsewhere (primarily to the topic of Russell’s short-lived marriage to Katy Perry) as he is well known to do, and Russell answered as candidly as possible. The result? Finally, we have confirmation of how Russell really wanted to start having babies and his dismay that Katy didn’t want to do the same. EW.com has an audio clip of the interview, and here are some excerpts:

Russell Brand

Why he married & divorced Katy: “I loved her so much, it just seemed like the sensible thing to do [when we got married] … I just loved her so much.” But once they were husband and wife, Brand admitted that he realized, “this isn’t really working out, it’s a difficult situation … I was really, really in love with her, but it was difficult to see each other … We were together when it was right to be together, and when it wasn’t we worked it out … It was a lovely relationship … it mostly didn’t work for practical reasons … We did work it out, she’s happy, I’m happy. She’s young, successful and dedicated. [The reality is] you can’t fully understand it until you do it. I was really into the idea of marriage and having children.”

Brand said he’s still dedicated to the idea of being a dad and revealed that he and Perry did discuss starting a family, but he declined to give any details about those talks. “I don’t want anything to hurt her. She’s younger than me, she’s a young woman and she’s beautiful and she’s sensitive and I care about her deeply … I don’t want to be too glib,” he said about fears that Perry would read second-hand tabloid accounts of his Stern interview that will twist his words around. “She’ll read it and she’ll be sad and I don’t want that.”

On his newly-single shagathon: “If you’ve been on a diet of rice for a while and suddenly Willy Wonka asked you to take over the factory, you’d be kicking over barrels of candy and swimming in a chocolate river.”

Is he dating Isabella Brewster? “Some things in the newspaper aren’t true … that’s true, actually,” he said, adding that he was enjoying the “freedom” of being single again and reaffirming his commitment to hedonism. Though he intimated that there was someone in the bed with him as he called in for the interview, Brand argued that whoever it was is a “real person” and he wasn’t into dragging her into the tabloid muck.

Why he didn’t want Katy’s money: “I’ve got a good job. All I want to do I want to live a good life … I’m not into taking money from women.”

On Katy’s “Wide Awake” song: When Stern began dissecting the lyrics, citing the lines “I was in the dark … I was falling hard … how did I read the stars so wrong,” Brand got audibly uncomfortable. “That could be about anything … horoscopes, astronomy,” Brand joked. Citing the lines, “Now it’s clear to me/ that everything you see/ ain’t always what it seems,” Stern kept at it, suggesting that Perry was revealing her real feelings on the break. “Your interpretation sounds somewhat arbitrary,” Brand said. “She’s a young woman dealing with the breakup of a relationship … which is understandable. It’s a nice song.”

You know what ultimately surprises me about this conversation? That Howard Stern was familiar with the lyrics to a Katy Perry song and had actually put some thought into the song’s faux-goth, gossip implications. Howard is supposed to be edgier than that!

In other Russell news, he’s finally making some light of his marital disaster. While filming his “Brand X” show, Russell engaged in some banter with audience members until he came across a woman also named Katy, to whom he responded, “Anyway, enough of you, I’ve had enough ar*e-ache from people called Katy in the last year.” That’s a pretty mild statement, actually. Most people say much worse things about their ex-spouse, and Russell probably just said that because he knew everyone would be expecting him to react in some way to the woman’s name.

Incidentally, this is how Russell now wears his hair while attending yoga class. It pains me to admit that the Croydon facelift look does absolutely nothing for him. Not hot.

    whaaa, whaaa, whaaaaaa!

    stfu!

  3. Kate says:

i like how he responded about katy. he’s a gentelman and if i were ever to be in that situation, i hope my ex would be so sweet while commenting about me. class act.

    • Chicagogurl17 says:

Oh how I wish my ex would have been that respectful of our 10 yrs together. Some people just get very bitter when they are hurt or don’t get their way. It speaks volumes about his maturity and her inability to be in a successful long-term relationship that she’s lashing out (passive aggressive) and he’s not saying anything negative. More exes should act like Russell

      • I don’t know about your X but I was really surprised to find Russell Brand is a guy with ethics. One of the few around. I’m beginning to like British Guys better and better.

    • Sandy Pandy says:

Agree – he was really sweet about her. I would want an ex to describe me like that as well. high road taken.

  4. Ainsley says:

He’s been a lot more discreet and polite about the whole thing than she has. I don’t have any problem with what he has said, but those clothes?! Um, wow.

  5. Samigirl says:

If someone told me that I’d be referring to Russell Brand as a “class act,” I’d laugh hysterically. However, that’s exactly what he’s being. Very classy about the divorce. Good for him for taking the high road.

  6. gee says:

I may be in a minority here, but I love Russell Brand.

    • bluhare says:

      I like him too.

    • valleymiss says:

I’m right there with ya. Funny men are SO sexy to me, and he’s handsome, too. I guess you could say I’m into his cheekiness, and his cheekbones. Lol!

He probably thought that once Katy was done with her Spinning Peppermint Candies on Her Boobs Tour to support the Teenage Dream album, that they’d start a family. And Katy, having the biggest success of her career so far, said something along the lines of waiting until after a few more albums and tours. And also, I do think the rumors are true about her “partying” too much on the road, and Russell needing that element away from him. I wish Howard Stern had addressed that.

Btw, loving the idea that sex with Katy was like “rice,” and sex with other women is a chocolate factory. 😉

    • littlestar says:

I really like him too! He’s actually very intelligent. There’s thought behind his humour (unlike crappy comedians like Daniel Tosh who need to resort to racism to be “funny”). I’ve watched his new show a couple of times, and I have to say I was quite impressed by how well he argues his opinions, while using humour.

He may have been douchey in his past, but he’s totally grown up and reinvented himself (and not in a fake way). His comments on his divorce prove that.

    • Erinn says:

I love him too. I love listening to him in interviews. He’s incredibly intelligent, and very funny. To me at least.

    • Eve says:

      I’ve recently become a fan :).

    • sandy says:

      Guilty as charged.

    • normades says:

I know someone who has worked with Brand and says he’s hysterical and really nice. His Bookywok is supposedly brilliant. Seriously, he is way too smart for Katy. Once the sex novelty wore off I think they had litle left to base the relationship on.

  7. G says:

I’m actually looking forward to seeing Mr Brand mature his image….

  8. Pku78 says:

This really makes me like Russell. Fashion and one night stands aside, it seems he was really into Katy. And the way he handled himself with Stern….very classy and respectable.

  9. To-Go says:

Whatever, dude. You knew what you were getting before you married her. Good sex? Yeah. Probably. Intellect & a mature, steady relationship? No.

  10. Diana says:

God, I’ve never felt particularly upset by anything Katy P related. I think her music it’s fine enough (at least tolerable) and as far as her image goes, it just doesn’t ruffle my feathers. But this thing with the divorce, men! up until now I just thought it was like any divorce and whatever, but she’s just being cheap about it. Why couldn’t she just handled it differently? When I heard this interview with Russel, the first thing that came to mind was ‘This is the classier way to deal with this kind of stuff’. Instead, she displays it on her budget movie and writes passive agressive songs about it. so disappointed…

  11. pintaLOL says:

He handled that very well, in a respectable manner.
Notice how many times he referred to her as “young” though?

    • bluhare says:

He is ten years older than she is, isn’t he? Maybe it’s a long ten years. Or maybe he thought she was more mature than she is.

  12. Marianne says:

I saw Katy’s documentary (it was actually very good) and she said right there on camera, that she isn’t ready to be a mom yet, so thats not a big surprise to me.

    • Chicagogurl17 says:

You think they would have been on the same page and discussed this in details before the lavish Indian ceremony

      • Marianne says:

Well she wasn’t saying that she NEVER wanted to be a mom, its just something she envisions for herself somewhere down the line, right now. Plus, I think they got married when they were still in that lovey-dovey honeymoon phase and never really thought about what marriage would be like. I also think that they were in a long distance relationship last year (she was on tour) took a toll on their marriage.

    • Becky1 says:

That’s why Russell should have dated/married someone closer to his own age. I don’t blame her-she’s young and most likely at the peak of her career. She has plenty of time to have kids-she can do it in her 30’s once she’s made her money and her career has slowed down. Who knows what kind of discussion they had about it prior to getting married-it’s a shame if one or both of them wasn’t honest but I have to say I think she’s smart for focusing on her career right now.

  13. Jenna says:

I don’t know why, but those picks of him coming from Yoga reminded me of Miley and Pilates. Now I can’t stop laughing.

  14. TheOneAndOnly says:

Good one paola; My problem with RB is that he just isn’t funny it’s just poser schtick; all the great comedians from previous generations – think Cosby, Rich Little, Cheech and Chong, etc. had signature routines – what great comedy skit or character has he come up with; he just plays himself in movies and he just poses as a rock star (Jimmy Page he is not), where is there real original comedy here I don’t see it?

  15. Daisy says:

I’ve always found Russell to be hysterically funny and now classy. To acknowledge Katy as being a young women who is sensitive while looking out for her feelings because he doesn’t want her to be sad? I’m in love with this guy.

  16. wobble says:

I like him. I find him intelligent and funny on his show, and I like how much of a gentleman he was about Katy.

  17. RHONYC says:

    OHHHH SNNAP!

i’m not reading a word….i’m gonna put on the Howard TV ep this instant! thanx for the heads up. this should be gooooood! 😀

  18. Mrs. Ari Gold says:

It surprises me that I like him but I do and always have. I want to see him have a good career but he seems to have hard time finding material that’s worthy of him (who doesn’t?)

But I did hear good things about his show so I gotta check it out. I’m surprised everyone here loves him! I thought I was the only one.
