Gabriel Aubry is turning down modeling jobs & living off Halle Berry’s child support

A story in the latest issue of Star Magazine claims that Halle Berry’s ex, Gabriel Aubry, is living large off the recently awarded $20k a month he receives in child support from Halle. According to source that sounds firmly planted in Halle’s cap, Aubry is spending Halle’s money wildly and not bothering to make any of his own. He’s allegedly turning down modeling jobs because he’s doesn’t have to work for a living now that he has a guaranteed source of income.

Halle Berry’s unemployed baby daddy, French-Canadian model Gabriel Aubry, doesn’t know much about making money – but he sure knows how to spend it. In June, a judge ordered the Oscar winner to pay her ex $20,000 a month in child support. Apparently you need an allowance like that when you spend $11,000 on your daughter’s fourth birthday party – as Gabriel bragged in court, according to a source. He dropped “a thousand on the cake alone,” says the insider. “The money Gabriel spent would pay for an entire year of preschool!” (One very expensive preschool, anyway.) Beautiful Halle, 45, has been supporting her lazybones ex, 36, since they split in April 2010, and, as the friend points out, “it is really hard for her to watch how he spends money that he didn’t earn.” To add insult to injury, Gabriel doesn’t even take modeling jobs when he’s offered them. “He just lives off Halle,” says the friend. Nice work if you can get it.

[From Star Magazine, print edition, July 20, 2012]

In terms of Gabriel “not knowing about making money,” he reportedly earned nearly 3/4 of a million a year as a model when he hooked up with Halle. That might not be up to par by Halle’s standards, but it’s wildly successful by most everyone else’s.

At least Gabriel spent the money on a kids’ birthday party and isn’t using it to party on rented yachts on the Riviera with supermodels. It sounds like a lot of money for a party for little kids, but these people live in L.A. It’s about a fifth of what Taylor Armstrong spent on her daughter’s fourth birthday party. Plus Halle has worked to limit Gabriel’s access to their daughter at every turn. She probably wouldn’t be shelling out all that money if she just would have cooperated with him to make sure he spent time with his daughter. Now he’s laughing all the way to the bank and lavishing presents on his daughter.

For those of you who were concerned about Halle after her on-set head injury, she seems to be recovered and has returned to work. These are some photos of her and Nahla on set yesterday. That little girl is precious. Look at her playing with the balloons!

oh, please. 20k a month is hardly enough to live like a king in LA. not buying it, esp since it’s from star magazine.

    • brin says:

      I agree…it’s Star, enuf said.

    • beyonce's bump says:

did you read the actual star article? LMAO it is so obvious that it is Halle’s camp that sent it that story “beautiful halle…lazybones ex”? This is just too much. smh

    • Ann says:

Are you kidding me? You can live like a king on 20k a month even in LA which is where I reside. He’s a gold digger.

      • Aussie girl says:

Yes he his a gold digger but she is a crazy lady! No wonder they hooked up.

        @ Aussie girl – A goldigger? Hardly.

        From Wikipedi:

He is one of the top earning male models in the modeling industry.

He has modeled for Tommy Hilfiger, Gianni Versace, Calvin Klein, DKNY, Valentino, Trussardi, Nautica, Exte, Joop, Massimo Dutti and Next. He is signed to Wilhelmina Models in New York City and Beatrice Model agency in Milan, Italy.

He appeared in a Macy’s commercial in early 2008 as part of an exclusivity with Calvin Klein alongside Mariah Carey, Martha Stewart, Donald Trump and Carlos Santana. He was the only male model to ever appear on the cover of L’Uomo Vogue while appearing in four different designers’ campaigns at the same time, in the same magazine.

He owned a restaurant in Manhattan, New York City, Cafe Fuego, in the East Village.

Gabriel Aubry is a Canadian male model who has a net worth of $4.5 million. Gabriel Aubry has earned his net worth by modeling…

    • Raven says:

No kidding. And they don’t know much about the cost of preschool either.

    • Emma - the JP Lover says:

(Blinks) You say that as if $20,000 per month wasn’t 1/12 of the $240,000 a year that Halle has been ordered to pay Gabriel. I doubt Halle spends $240,000 a year on Nahla

I find it extremely hard to believe that a person can’t live well in Los Angeles on $240,000 a year.

      • DreamyK says:

You would really have to live here to understand how inflated the cost of things are. It’s very expensive to live in SoCal, even for us regular folks. I do think he can live nicely for 20k a month, but I disagree with him being able to live lavishly. Plug in West Hollywood apartment rental and see what happens. A nice apartment in a decent area is going to run about 3k a month. That’s not counting the bodyguards he is probably required to have for security purposes when he has his daughter. I doubt if he could afford to rent an actual house in WeHo because those run closer to 8k a month. Hopefully he’s putting some of that money aside for his daughters college education/car/wedding..whatever.

I totally believe this. It IS coming from gossip bible Star magazine. *rolls eyes*
Seriously when is this magazine gonna b shut down? Doesn’t it belong to Rupert Murdoch? There’s probably some major sketchiness invovled

  3. CandyKay says:

Not-very-subtle propaganda from the Berry camp. Probably very effective if people don’t know the back story – but most people do, indeed, know the back story. I’m amazed that Halle still has so many endorsement deals. Maybe some of them, like Revlon, were multi-year deals signed before the ugly custody battle began.

I believe Gabe’s supposed $750,000-a-year income included some big endorsement deals as well, particularly one for a bed linen manufacturer, as I recall. His job was to look sexy amid the tousled sheets.

But personal brand has also been tainted by the custody battle, so I would guess that he is also being offered fewer, if any, endorsements. I doubt he does much editorial either. Too distracting – the ‘troubled celebrity model’ takes attention away from the clothes. Bottom line: he may not have as many opportunities to work as a model any more.

    • cmc says:

So obviously Halle’s team. “Beautiful Halle, 45, has been supporting her lazybones ex, 36”? Um, could you be more obvious?

      • beyonce's bump says:

hahaha CMC, I just said exactly the same thing before reading your comment! So hilariously obvious that it is from Halle’s camp!

    • Elizabeth says:

Big deal – he is turning down work and spending time instead with his young child. Later when she’s in school full-time, he would be able to spend this much time with her. Good for him! And this looks like it came straight from Halle’s PR machine. I’m really starting to dislike that woman.

  4. Eleonor says:

I’m sure if he was working 24/24 Halle would go to court saying he is a bad dad, who only thinks to work, to reduce his time with little Nahla. I tend to think he is still working, but he is more careful with his working choices.

  5. marie says:

I would hope that this isn’t true and it’s just a planted story, because if not, that’s ridiculous and he needs to get off his lazy ass and go to work. Since it comes from Star, I’m willing to believe it’s not true..

    • olcranky says:

it sounds very much like a story planted by Berry’s people

it’s quite possible that any jobs he turns down are ones whose schedule conflict with his visitation with his daughter and, considering the animus and Berry’s obvious desire to remove him from Nahla’s life, there’s no way Aubrey could safely request a change in the visitation schedule to accommodate his work schedule

  6. tonina says:

At first I want to believe that this is not a planted story.

Then, I reached the line starting with “Beautiful Halle, 45, has been…”

Followed by “…lazybones ex, 36, since they split…”

    Like whoa!
Either the writer is a Berrycopanth who worships each perfectly-formed Berringlets,
    Or it’s planted story.
None of which does her any good.

  7. oxa says:

You can bet that Berry is paying more than $20 grande a month to keep Ollie in a manner far better than he is accustomed to.
So it is great that he is spending this summer with Nahla. Just last summer Berry fought to deny him access to his daughter who soon will be in school full time.
Bravo to Gabriel for not backing down and fighting for equality when it comes to child support!!

  8. L says:

Seriously, I have family that live in LA. 20K a month is not exactly living large money. Maybe in the rest of the country yes-but no there.

I think everyone has covered the ‘beautiful halle’ lazybones ex crap. Way to be totally obvious about being a plant ya’ll.

    • Emma - the JP Lover says:

Yes, you can live very well in Los Angeles for $20,000 a month. Heck, you could live like a princess in L.A. on $5,000 a month. Truth.

How many modeling jobs last more than a month? Gabriel has what he was after. Halle’s money.

      • Carletonart says:

Do not forget that she went after him when she was shopping for a baby daddy. The guy was not broke ass when they met. If he the tables were turned, there would be an outcry about being kept in the style that she had been accustomed. $240 000 a year would be for hair, makeup, and pet grooming! Halle got the genes and the baby that she wanted from him. It was always her plan to loose him. From the start of his career here in Canada Gabriel has always had the reputation of being a stand up guy and gracious to work with. While Halle and her camp set out to defame and malign him. Gabriel did not stoop to her level. Having lived with five different foster families from the age of three to eighteen had to have had a profound effect on his drive to do what ever it takes to be a good father.
And no, I am not his press agent. Like most of you on here, I respect the man for standing up the “bitch be crazy” team to exert his parental rights.

  9. CandyKay says:

Maybe the writer at Star was trying to make it intentionally sound like a plant.

Tabloids often ‘trade’ stories for access to another of an agent/manager/studio’s clients. Halle Berry’s agent is Toni Howard, who represents a lot of other big names at ICM.

It’s possible that someone told Star, “If you want an interview with XXX, we’d like you to run a positive story about Halle Berry” and the writer/magazine rebelled with this piece of obvious cr*p.

  10. Shannon says:

Wow…there’s a lot of Halle bashing in these comments. I didn’t realize she had so many haters.

I do believe this story. Although 20K a month is not a enough to live like a king in LA it is a lot of money. Plus, dude is clearly not working.

The one common denominator with all the guys Halle chooses is they are jerks. She obviously has bad taste in men and I doubt this guy is any different. I’m sure he’s willing to live off 20K per/month for as long as he can. Who wouldn’t?

Also, how is paying is rent, bills, etc? Clearly he’s using the money meant to support the child to also support himself.

    • Lee says:

Most people NEED child support money to help pay the rent – for regular people it’s how you keep a roof over the head of the child, while still paying for other things the child needs. Otherwise it’d mean living under a bridge while the child had an ever-growing pile of toys and clothes. Not realistic.

    • Scarlet Vixen says:

I’m always surprised at how many people really don’t understand how child support works, and what it’s really for. Child support isn’t there for the parent to buy more toys and cute shoes. It’s to SUPPORT the child–rent, utility bills, groceries, daycre, clothes, gas, health insurance, meds, school tuition/supplies, etc. If he’s using some of the money to rent a bigger apartment to accomodate his child (and the nanny that I believe Berry requires to be there) he’s using child support EXACTLY as he should. I intentionally have 2 checking accounts so I can always provide proof (just in case) of how I use my child support. I use support account for groceries, co-pays, etc and my own income for my items, splurge money, etc.

      • Emma - the JP Lover says:

The man is getting a quarter of a million dollars from Halle a year, and Nahla doesn’t even live with him full-time. The ‘women’ who whine for child support from rich ex-husbands, lovers, or one-night stands are usually the sole, primary care givers for the child. That is what ‘Halle’ is to Nahla.

Halle is the one who pays for her child care, probably even when they were still a couple. She is the one who will pay for Nahla’s schooling (because you’d better believe that Gabriel will say that he can’t afford it on his own).

Gabriel isn’t asking for full custody of Nahla, he is asking that his paternal rights be protected. Halle is the primary care giver for that child. Gabriel does ‘not’ deserve $240,000 a year for two months of primary childcare a year. He is not a pauper, and he is a highly sought International male model.

I can’t help but believe that if this were any other actress than Halle, half of you wouldn’t be making these comments and jumping to the conclusion that Halle’s camp planted this in “Star” magazine.

And will someone please tell me why everyone is calling Halle crazy? Did I miss a story or scandal in which she did something totally outlandish and insane? Other then her horrible choice in men–which even she admits is tied psychologically to her own deadbeat Dad–what has this woman done to earn such hatred, ire, and the label ‘Crazy?’

  11. Jacq says:

So they’re saying he spent the money ON THE CHILD? Isn’t that what is SUPPOSED to happen with a support check?! For shame…
This whole thing has left me completely disgusted with Halle. What a freakin’ nut-bar. Has Aubrey ever hit-and-run? Who is really the bad person here?

  12. Helvetica says:

Love the first pic where Nahla is pouting and he’s trying to make her smile. Aww.

That little girl looks just like her daddy.

  13. Fyofeelings says:

All he is a highly paid nanny! Any man that doesn’t financially take of his kid is not a man at all.

  14. fabgrrl says:

I imagine Gabriel Aubry has to be very selective in the jobs he takes nowadays. He probably has to arrange his schedule VERY carefully, because the minute he has to pick up Nahla late or needs to be somewhere during his visitation weekend, Halle is going to be right back in court screaming about what a negligent and unfit father he is.

    • Ann says:

Please, he’s an ‘aging’ model. I think the job offers aren’t what they used to be. If it wasn’t for him having dated Berry, none of us would even know who he is.

  15. RHONYC says:

damn. she is the ‘spitting’ image of Gabriel. like, wow. 😮

  16. The Original Mia says:

Obvious plant by Halle’s people. Let it go, Halle. Let it go. Good Lord, don’t make me hold up Katie & Tom as an example, but they are trying to make it work & there’s a cult involved! Stop your crazy crap & let the man have joint custody of his daughter.

  17. AmyLynne says:

Nahla really is so precious. She seems like such a sweet little girl, usually with a smile on her face.

  18. Viv says:

    Beautiful Halle supporting lazybones Ex?
    Shouldn’t this read:
Crazy Halle giving beautiful Ex 1% of her income to support their daughter?
She should pay him extra for likely having to listen to some verbal abuse that comes with that money every month. When he starts spending it on gambling, hookers and Bentleys, that’s when I will start complaining about him.

    • AnnieN says:

      +1

    • Mooshi says:

      Viv,

I agree with you on this one. As long as he’s using the money to focus on his daughter, then its money and TIME well spent.

What daughter would not want their daddy full-time?

  19. ramona says:

Good lord, Nahla is absolutely beautiful.

  20. Miz Misanthrope says:

Since this is such a clear plant by Halle’s people my question would be how much did she spend on Nahla’s birthday party? My intuition says probably about the same which means Gabe didn’t have a choice about matching her. I wouldn’t put it past Halle for all the other stunts she’s pulled to start whispering to Nahla- “Look how much I spent on you…Daddy didn’t spend that much…it means he doesn’t love you as much as Mommy does…”

  21. bubbles says:

what a douche!!! i would be so embarrassed to take money from my babby momma!

  22. Dee Cee says:

She just wants him to take a big committed long term job, probably shopping around for him to do one say in South America or Canada.. and then she takes the kid and says she a job out of the US ..slips away with Nahla, must enroll her in school, rent a place, set up a routine.. then the big bring back my kid battle begin for a time when she comes back.. he’s not falling for it..

    • RHONYC says:

whoa. i didn’t even think of that! if that’s the case then i understand perfectly why he’s staying close to his child!

plus, about the dough…dude made $$$ b4 her, during her & i’m sure after. modeling is like acting, once the ‘job/assignment’ is finished you are essentially ‘unemployed’ just like Halle will be when this film wraps. being ‘unemployed’ with ‘means’ is NOT like being ‘unemployed’ at the unemployed office. let’s get real.

Halle’s exes are ‘ALWAYS’ douchebags after the breakup. does anyone else see a pattern here? i mean, i sucked at math, but even i can see there is a fuggin’ common denominator here. 🙄

  23. tru tru says:

Halle wanted a sperm donor and she got it..

pay up mama, its not like he is using the money for a hooker.

its a drop in the bucket for her, she just hates she no longer has FULL control.

those are the breaks, Nayla loves her daddy.

not the short cheater that Halle wants to push on her now.

  24. A says:

I wish they would get back together again!

  25. MW says:

Oh, BS. The Judge is no fool. He knows the facts here, not Star Mag. If the Judge thought GA was trying to take advantage, he would have cut GA off at the knees. Obviously the Judge thought the request for support was reasonable, and granted GA the requested support.

  26. skuddles says:

Wow, Nahla is already such a little beauty – she’s going to be a stunner when she grows up…

  27. jwoolman says:

If he were a woman, nobody would blink twice. Fact is that young children do need a lot of time from the parentals or parental substitutes. If he left her with a nanny or shortened visitation because of work, he would risk losing her because Halle would use it against him in court. Especially since he only has her part time, makes a lot of sense to avoid scheduling conflicts and take less work accordingly. Not all parents can do that, but he can and so he does.

The reason the richer parent pays such high child support is to level the playing field. The court wants the other parent to be definitely able to maintain a lifestyle similar enough to the other parent’s to avoid alienation issues when the child shuttles back and forth between them. The court uses a formula to decide, they don’t just arbitrarily increase it on request.
