Why hasn’t Vince Vaughn promoted ‘Four Christmases’?

Reese Witherspoon hit the publicity trail hard for her comedy Four Christmases with Vince Vaughn. She’s been doing the late night TV circuit and has granted plenty of interviews. While Reese’s perma-grin has been plastered all over magazines, Vaughn has done nary an interview. He also didn’t show up to the premiere of Four Christmases in LA. There was an interview with Vince in Esquire Magazine that came out earlier this month that kept mentioning how fat he was, but apart from that I couldn’t find much. Maybe he gained a lot of weight and isn’t comfortable making appearances, or maybe the rumors about a rift with type-A Witherspoon are true. Either way, he seems like a poor sport for not doing his part to promote the film.

It didn’t matter much that Vaughn didn’t hold up his end of the promotion bargain. Four Christmases really cleaned up at the box office this Thanksgiving. It took in $46.7 million in five days, which makes it the third biggest holiday opening of all time. Families flocked to the PG-13 comedy despite the general disapproval of critics. The film only has a 26% aggregate rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics saying that there’s little or no chemistry between leads Vince Vaughn and Reese Witherspoon and that the gags are predictable and overdone.

People needed something to see this season and they picked this lukewarm comedy. Sometimes microwaved leftovers are just the thing to hit the spot. Did any of you see this film and did you like it? Was it worth the price of admission and an hour and a half of your time? Maybe Vaughn thought it was going to tank and decided to bail early. Reese doesn’t give up though, and this time she was vindicated.

  1. Its not really on my to-see list - more like my netflix list but the promos do look funny. & vaugn (fat or not) is a hottie. i’d climb that!

  2. If VV’s contractual obligations required him to promote the film, he’d have been out there doing it. The fact that he’s not suggests he wasn’t under obligation to do it. Only seen clips (Reese has been on a few UK shows promoting it) and it looks really lame.

  3. Haven’t seen it yet, but probably will. I like both of the stars, so I imagine it will be entertaining.

I don’t expect every movie I see to have depth or to be meaningful, etc. Sometimes I just want a plain, fun, simple movie for entertainment. This seems that it will fill the bill nicely.

  4. It was funny. Only problem was it’s hard to believe them as a couple.

  5. Vince looks so cute in the last picture holding the baby. I could almost like hima gain.

  6. Imbd shows he is filming “Couples Retreat”. He may not be doing promotions because he is on location. I have to imagine he isn’t contractually obligated to promote the film either. Perhaps this is why.

  7. Didn’t Vaughn produce the film? It’s f-cked up he didn’t promote it. Perhaps he’s still recovering from a much-needed liver transplant?

  8. I read they couldn’t STAND each other and she thought Vaughn was a completely ass wipe on set. Of course that could be nonsense, but still, she’s very professional and old Vince strikes me as a party guy.

  9. I took my daughter over vacation break, and it is a fine choice for a family holiday flick. My nine year old loved it, and it was a pleasant enough experience for me. I did wonder, however, why on earth anyone would cast Vince Vaughn to costar with Reese Witherspoon. Not particularly believable.

  10. I want to see this

Blind Gossip had this to say:

BlindGossip - When a film comes out, the stars usually share the promotional duties. In the case of this film, however, Star 1 has been making the rounds of talk shows, while Star 2 has been conspicuously absent. While Star 2 is claiming that his absense is due to other work obligations, the truth is that the friction between the two was so bad on the set that Star 2 has completely washed his hands of anything to do with the film. Star 1 remains publicly upbeat and supportive of Star 2, but has privately told friends that Star 2 is “the biggest a**hole on the planet,” and that the two will never, ever work together again.

Sorry for the long quote - I’m on a break at work and writing links does odd things to my browser.

  11. not on my holiday list of things to do. I saw Slumdog Millionaire which is hands down the best movie of 2008. such a GOOD movie. everyone should rush to go see it.

  12. Not going to see it.
He is funny, but she is too uptight and annoying.

I saw Australia and the director should never be allowed to work again.
    Not as a director, anyway.
Actually, the director should not be allowed around films.

Nicole is beautiful as always, and Hugh Jackman is trying to do his best, but the kid they chose was awful, the story was a bore and the entire movie falls flat.

  13. Really Bros.? I kept reading these AMAZING reviews for that movie, but I felt it was a far cry from one of the “best” I’ve ever seen. Nicely tied up at the end, meaningful and purposeful storyline, beautiful landscape (even through the war-torn, proverty stricken areas) of India, but NOT entertaining (which I feel a movie in any capacity should be).

  14. how could you not think it was entertaining? are you sure we saw the same movie? what are you talking about war-torn india?

  15. i thought this movie was meh. Nothing special. i don’t care for Reese Witherspoon, but I’m over the moon for Vince Vaughn ever since Swingers, so it all evened out; hence the meh. It’s a decent renter but not worth seeing in the theater, but then again not much is these days.

  16. Wait - which movie was filmed in India? That’s the one I’d pay to see.

What were we talking about again?

  17. They must have had a massive publicity budget for Four Christmases. I have been traveling for the past couple of weeks and there are ads EVERYWHERE for this movie.

  18. He should have helped her promote it. It looks stupid but he shouldn’t have made Reese do it all alone.

Most everything I’ve read say Vince is a total arrogant asshole. I can believe it, from what I have seen and all I have read. I think that the self absorbed jerk he played in Wedding Crashers and the Breakup movie with Jennifer Anniston were much a stretch for him. He was just being himself.
