New trailer for Katherine Heigl and Gerard Butler romcom: ‘The Ugly Truth’

I like a good cheesy romantic comedy, but it has to have some redeeming qualities or I’ll feel like a fool for wasting an hour and a half sitting in a chair watching someone else’s idea of entertainment instead of spending quality time reading random crap on the Internet.

There are too many clichés in this modern twist on Cyrano de Bergerac. There’s the successful career woman who is pining for a man to make her life complete, the tough womanizer who yearns for the love of a good woman, and a stupid contrived scenario that brings them together inevitably in the end. It’s not cute and looks like it will go down like dry toast. Katherine Heigl should be reduced to working on these type of shit films, but I’d like to think Gerard Butler is better than this. He did do that awful dead love letter movie with Hillary Swank, though. Times are tight and actors are working where they can. People also aren’t willing to shell out good money to see rehashed plots that we can watch for free on the Lifetime channel, flipping to better shows and watching amusing YouTube videos when it gets slow.

I asked for feedback on this trailer, and my friends on facebook and twitter are divided. 2/3 agree that it’s annoying. Holly mentions that there’s “no believable chemistry between Katherine Heigl and Gerard Butler” and that Heigl only does one Izzy-type character. Agent Bedhead reminds us that Heigl is insufferable and also notes the lack of chemistry between the leads. She says that Butler is heading toward overexposure. While he’s still on the right side of that precipice for me, this film will surely push him off it. Tiffany says the trailer is kind of charming though and that this movie looks good for a typical chick flick despite the fact that she usually can’t stand Heigl. What do you think?

Was Katherine Heigl in the movie? I only saw Gerard! LOL! I will be forced to see this because I love watching Gerard Butler do anything.

Like I said to friends who asked me if Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman have chemistry in Australia….who cares? I have chemistry with Hugh Jackman!!!!

from saving deer to seeing dead denny? This is so bad i almost feel sorry for her.

    Almost.

“Wish Upon A Star” should have been a signal…i really shouldn’t know this 😯

Show me a romantic comedy, and I’ll be across the street playing pool.

    Yack.

  5. Kaiser says:

I think in the age of interchangeable rom-coms, the chemistry is all the moviegoer has. It’s why I can watch the BBC and the Joe Wright versions of Pride & Prejudice over and over – I like seeing the Actors who play Darcy and Elizabeth fall in love, over and over. It’s why I watch “You’ve Got Mail” – which is a terrible movie, story-wise – just because I like seeing Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks fall for each other.

Gerry Butler would have chemistry with a wet noodle. Hiegel’s the devil, but it does seem like she & Butler have chemistry.

Kaiser, I’m glad I’m not the only one to watch P&P over and over. It’s what I watch while I fold laundry almost every week. (That and the 2005 version of Jane Eyre.)

  7. Moore says:

I’ve not liked her since Roswell. She’s always the same character in the same movies. I think its so wrong that she gets paid as much as she does when she’s no good at it.
so yeah I wont be watching this.

  8. Kaiser says:

Wif – Which version do you watch? I love both, but I really have to be in the mood to watch the Colin Firth/Jennifer Ehle one, because it’s so long. I appreciate the Joe Wright one because it doesn’t harp on and on with the subplots and the actors are the ages the characters are supposed to be. Also, I love that Darcy – Matthew MacFayden, right?

  9. geronimo says:

This looks so formulaic and she’s definitely not interesting enough to care about or waste 2 hours on.

  10. Codzilla says:

    Uh, no thanks.

  11. GimmeABreak says:

I hate that I’ll be forced to sit thru this kind of pain only to fill my insatiable appetite for Gerard Butler!

  12. Wif says:

Kaiser, I watch both versions but do it in hour long snippets while the laundry is getting folded. But my preference is for the Joe Wright one because Matthew MacFayden is dreamy, dreamy, dreamy. Mind you, Colin Firth is pretty dreamy too, but my I just dig MM that little bit more.

  13. Feebee says:

I want to kill myself, I actually found the trailer quite funny… predictable but quite funny. I can’t stand Katherine Heigl, I don’t want to encourage her by going to see her movies and I’m going to convince myself that they put all the best bits in the trailer, so movie seen, I can let it go.

  14. Ling says:

You KNOW Butler will pull it off. I managed to sit through PS I Love You despite my unnatural contempt for all things Swank because of his cheeky little stroke-victim grin. (Though I should probably let that go, given that my mom likes him because he reminds her of my dad. Oof.)

  15. Emily says:

Well it looks ok. I only really liked the trailer because of the Mika song Grace Kelly.

  16. Luz says:

    I cant wait 4 the movie =D
I love Katherine and Gerard… she is so gorgeous and he is sooo sexy…
and the movie looks funny =D

  17. Best of British says:

Wif/Kaiser – I also love Pride and Prejudice and adore both the BBC version and the movie. I think Matthew MacFadyen wins hands down over Colin Firth tho.. I just love that scene in the movie where he runs after Keira Knightley in the pouring rain and they have an “exchange” under a mock roman archway in the gardens where he tells her he loves her and blah blah you know the rest but WOW the chemistry in that.. makes my blood boil every single time. YUM

How did you get “successful career woman who is pining for a man to make her life complete” from this trailer? Just looks like a bet to me. It’s cute. Lighten up.

  20. Mark says:

Katherine Heigl is gorgeous. Get over it.

  21. Taylor says:

It wasnt as good as i thought it would be.
But i still really liked it.
When me and my friendswatched it for the first time we thought it was cute, chessy and funny. <3
