Lily Collins on her bold brows: “It’s the quirky things that make you beautiful”

Even though I still kind of think Lily Collins was an awful choice to play Snow White (in the disastrous Mirror Mirror), I did end up falling for her a little bit. She pulled out some good looks on the publicity tour, and she seemed to have a great attitude about fame and her career and her “unconventional” eyebrows. It was almost like she was openly defying me, daring me to yell at her eyebrows. But I cannot. Anymore. Just to defend myself a little bit – the production stills that came out of Mirror Mirror were HIDEOUS. Like, awful lighting, bad costumes, terrible makeup. I think that initially influenced my (negative) opinion of Lily. Also… to defend myself a little bit further… I do think she has groomed herself a bit more after the “furry” Mirror Mirror debacle. While she still has bold, thick brows, they seem to be more tapered and she’s definitely taken care of those stragglers looking to make their way to Unibrow Town. Anyway, Lily is featured in the September issue of Glamour – the one with Posh Beckham on the cover, and Posh “guest-edited”. Posh actually chose Lily for this feature!

Listen in as Glamour gets to know Mirror, Mirror star and Hollywood darling Lily Collins, 23, who’s got two big movies coming out soon: The English Teacher and the adaptation of sci-fi trilogy Mortal Instruments. (And, yes, eighties rocker Phil Collins is her dad.) She was handpicked for this story by guest editor Victoria Beckham.

Glamour: What’d you think when you found out Victoria had chosen you for this issue?
Lily Collins: I was so honored! I grew up adoring the Spice Girls. And you can’t touch her when it comes to fashion. She owns every outfit she wears. I don’t know how she handles all of those kids—and in heels!

Glamour: What’s your approach with makeup?
LC: Less is more. When I travel to Europe, I go days without putting anything on. It feels healthier. I just never understood the idea of caking it on. The more you have on your face, the more there is to smudge and go wrong.

Glamour: Your eyebrows have become your signature. How does it feel to have one part of your body be so obsessed over?
LC: Big brows weren’t the look in L.A., where I grew up. But my mom instilled in me that it’s the quirky things that make you beautiful.

Glamour: You’ve worked with the most beautiful women in Hollywood. Picked up any tips?
LC: With Sandra Bullock, Julia Roberts, Julianne Moore, and Jennifer Connelly, they weren’t fussy with hair and makeup. They all exude this inner and outer beauty. I learned that no matter how big you get, it’s still important not to let anything go to your head.

[From Glamour]

I cosign her feelings about makeup. Whenever I look at photos of Duchess Kate or Kim Kardashian, I just think they seem so uncomfortable under the sheer weight of all of their makeup. I suppose it’s something many women get used to, but I just never could. That being said, it’s easy to not wear much makeup when you’re 23 years old like Lily, you know? Anyway, I’m glad Lily feels the same way… and I’m glad she’s found a way to embrace her quirks.

She is cute but let’s be honest without her name, money, and connections she’d be one of thousands wannabes. She is not that special.

  2. Ming says:

Every member of the Church of Jennifer Connelly has to wear such brows.

    Don’t offend my religion.

    • Mimi says:

      ^^Love it.

    • I Choose Me says:

      Ha!

    • Amelia says:

You’ve no idea how jealous of you I am. I’d convert if I could, but growing these babies out is a bitch.

      • void says:

I love bold eyebrows. I think they make a face so dynamic. But I still get insecurr sometimes that other people think I just “don’t realize” I need to pluck them or thin them out. I’ve heard it before from bitchy girls at my university. After reading this I need opinions, honest ones. http://en.gravatar.com/vvvoid

      • Marie Antoinette Jr. says:

void your eyebrows are gorgeous. Those bitches are just jealous.

      • void says:

Thank you! 🙂 It’s not that I worry so much that they look bad, it’s more that I worry they are bold to the point that people will mistakenly think I’m clueless. I don’t know why that bothers me. But it’s my heritage. And they were some ugly, obnoxious bitches for sure.

  3. Tillie says:

I think she is very pretty

    • hoya_chick says:

Yes! Especially in the header photo. Wow, never really looked at her before but she looks so gorgeous here. I personally like a fuller brow. I hate those too-thin-overly-tweezed brows, looks too fake and ages a woman like no other. Can she act? I haven’t seen her in anything.

  4. gee says:

I think she is SO pretty! I have no idea what she is like as an actress, but she is really a very pretty person.

  5. Bubbling says:

I think she is beautiful, and do not see how she could possibly be bad choice for Snow White. She is fair skinned with dark hair, no? As for her eye brows, again I don’t see the big deal. Sure, they are thickish, but still she got nothing on Brooke Shields…Any way I’m sure you could find more women with eyebrows like that, and ain’t nothing wrong with it!

    • Kait says:

I actually loved Mirror Mirror – so did my kids.

But the whole time I watched that movie I kept thinking “OMG she’s like a young Victoria Beckham!”

  6. Valerie says:

My natural brows are even bigger than hers and I have to pluck every darn day to get them under control. But I’d rather have thick brows than pencil-thin ones, ala every prostitute arrested on Cops.

    • bellyache says:

Lol, Val! I’m sure yours are stunning 🙂

    • Katyusha says:

Valerie, me too! I have thicker brows (that are kept shaped, Obviously), but I get complimented on my eyebrows more than anything. I wouldn’t trade mine. I can’t stand overly plucked brows – it looks horrible.

    • IzzyB says:

Ha! My friend calls them chola eyebrows.

I too have naturally thick and dark brows. I keep them neat but any serious shaping would require pulling over half of them out and pulling strays every single day. I’m lazy and nobody complains.

      • OriginalTiffany says:

Some of us more unfortunates were raised in the 80’s. My brows will never be thick and glorious. Sniff. Do not over pluck!

Phil was actually very cute when he was young. Surprisingly. Big early Genesis fans here, even though it was before my time.

Chola brows are still living large in certain areas of SoCal! 🙂

  7. Riana says:

I never saw the brows as being that bad though. Maybe it’s because I read a lot of fashion magazines but Lily’s eyebrows have been the style for years now.it’s nice to see her wear them bold and not wax them down to nothing, makes her stand out a little more from her peers.

Audrey Hepburn, Brooke Shields, Jennifer Connelly. You know there was someone behind them begging them to fix their eyebrows or they’d never be truly successful. Good to see someone being a little off-beat.

  8. mln89 says:

its like she has two huge catapillars on her face.

    • reddmasters says:

^ yes, it does; I agree that sometimes it is the quirky things that make someone appear beautiful, but not these bushy brows. Lilly could tame them a tiny bit and improve her look greatly. She has a gorgeous complexion and very delicate features. The brows are just overwhelming her.

  9. teehee says:

    Eyebrows are not quirks.

They grow on every face, and its only trends that tell us how thick they are allowed to be.

    • operagirl says:

      Not true!

As someone who is and always has been fairly brow challenged, I’m envious of her thick brows — they can be shaped however she would like them to be.

If what you have is sparse, however, all you can do is pencil and brush them in… which is never the same, alas.

  10. carlie says:

she’s so beautiful, her mama must be a hottie if her daddy is phil collins cause you know he didn’t contribute much!

  11. tabby says:

I honestly love her eyebrows, they shape her face well.

  12. Sombrero says:

Is it just me or is her brows looks standard ?
There’s nothing special about it, just brown eyebrow that looks thick obviously because of pencil.

  13. Bluedog says:

Ugh! More celebrity spawn. Nepotism in Hollywood is so boring.

  14. Bobo says:

You wanna see quirky eyebrows?!I have a birthmark at the end of my right one! Oh the crazy remarks over the years I have gotten about it!

  15. pretty says:

    she’s so so beautiful.
Her face..wow….I can’t stop staring at it… perfect

  16. serena says:

Yep she totally groomed them a bit.
Also ‘Unibrow Town’ made me LOL a lot.

By the way, I loved Julia’s performance in Mirror Mirror -yet the movie kind of sucked- and I think Lily is a lovely pretty thing.

  17. Julie says:

I cant take her serious after her countless showmances.

  18. Crystal says:

She is stunning. Her eyebrows were laid by the gods.

She seems nicer than Nepotism Roberts (Emma Roberts to some of you) and I’m a big Phil Collins stan so I can’t hate her.

She needs to stop with all those showmances though, it’s not a good look.

  19. GoodCapon says:

She gets publicity because of her ‘unconventional’ eyebrows because just looking at her, she’s a standard Hollywood/conventional beauty.

She’s relatively new on the Hollywood scene, she’s inoffensive IMO so I can’t really snark on her.

  20. lucy2 says:

She’s definitely groomed them a bit. I think she looks good, but I’m not yet sold on her having a career beyond her connections. We’ll see though, maybe she’ll make it work.

    • Krill says:

They’ve totally been groomed since that movie! She caved under the criticism but trying to make it seem like she didn’t. Whatever.

  21. Chicagogurl17 says:

    Unibrow town = genius!

  22. Pookie says:

Google pics of the beautiful Audrey Hepburn. Lily reminds me of her. Audrey had huge eyebrows and she was perhaps one of the most beautiful women ever!

  23. dovesgate says:

She reminds me of Audrey Hepburn.

  24. tmbg says:

I don’t see anything quirky about thick brows. I’d love some huge ones like those because if you want to, you can get them shaped into pretty much any arch you want.

Mine used to be fairly thick until I plucked the hell out of them and they’ve grown back with Rapid Lash, but they will never look like those. Full brows really add youthfulness to your face.

    • pilgrim says:

because of my semitic genes, i have thick
eyebrows. because of my asian genes, they grow downward. thick brows only look youthful if they grow upwards. been plucking like crazy for 30 years but
they still grow back looking like two squirmy ferrets above my eyes. you women (and men) who have lovely eyebrows that grow upwards, don’t pluck them.

  25. Lindsey says:

    Eyebrows are quirky now????

  26. sunmoonstars says:

Keep telling yourself that, sweetie! Whoa there’s two caterpillars on your face OMG AAAAGH….oh whew, that’s just your eyebrows, my bad!

    (psst…try developing a personality)

  27. operagirl says:

Good lord, there’s a lot of snark toward this girl!

I think she’s lovely, her skin is gorgeous, and at least she has a unique look and isn’t just another blonde.

However… she should never wear dark lipstick. It’s way too much with her strong eyes and brows. Glamour styled her perfectly in these shots.

    • EmmaV1 says:

The snark is because she’s just a clearcut case of nepotism. No critics cared about her in Blind Side (she was just “there”), she got bad reviews in Abduction with Taylor Lautner, and she got neutral reviews in Mirror Mirror, with the consensus being that Julia Roberts blew her off screen.

She’s definitely very pretty, but so are many other struggling actresses.

My issue with her is she’s mentioned nepotism like twice and acts like it’s barely a benefit/help to one’s career. BS

People like Kate Hudson, Jennifer Aniston, Angelina Jolie, and much more have gotten help from some nepotism, but in the end, it was up to them to make the most of their careers.

Lily has used her nepotism for every single movie and still can’t break onto the scene.

  28. HappyJoyJoy says:

I love her eyebrows. I wish mine looked like that.

  29. bluhare says:

Now she could play a young Elizabeth Taylor.

  30. Leticia says:

Her eyebrows suit her face. Her eyebrows remind me of Audrey Hepburn’s and Elizabeth Taylor’s.

  31. Nadia says:

I think she might be suitable playing the role of Anastasia Steele, if the movie does come to fruition. She has that thick bottom lip and the submissive, virginal look to her. Plus she’s up and coming, and won’t probably cost much compared to the rumoured casting of Emma Watson. Just my 2 cents.

  32. lrm says:

she is gorgeous; i thought she was great as snow white, and i even liked julia in that film…sorry, regardless of critics, i thought it was a great, semi feminist take on that fable….
anyway, i was struck by lily collins in that film-hadn’t seen her prior…she’s absolutely gorgeous IMO, unique looking….
I think she’s def. more talented than emma roberts, whose bitchy attitude already comes through on the big screen. uugh. i’d rather watch julia, and that’s saying something…..at least julia has a movie star persona-larger than life and narcissistic, that’s the way it’s supposed to be [ie, the ‘movie star persona’ is like that]. Emma has not earned that type of attitude yet, if she ever does. I mean, nancy drew was a cute movie and all….but….[i have kids-i’m always just thrilled when something isn’t animated and 3D]
Slightly off topic: I did not see SW and the huntman, b/c KStewart was already on my list of avoiding on the big screen-she is obnoxious, and this was far prior to the scandal….so, yea, i think she had alot of anti fans already going into this thing….

  33. p says:

Her look belongs to another age/era, along with Audrey Hepburn and Elizabeth Taylor. Classic and beautiful.

  34. Nance says:

I would like to see her in the adaptation of the Clocktower snes video game, she got the look.

  35. Ally says:

If her brows are naturally that thick, then those eyelashes could be, too. If not, then they’re the best falsies I’ve ever seen.

  36. spinner says:

She really is a beauty. I know Phil is an Aussie but Lily looks very Scottish to me.

  37. Lisa says:

Mmmm, no, not really. To a degree this is true, but largely, it’s a lot of luck, a little makeup, and a touch of personality that make someone attractive.

  38. Me says:

She’s wrong about what makes people beautiful. It’s photoshop, duh!
BTW she is really pretty naturally.

  39. Stacy Dresden says:

She is absolutely beautiful. She looks like a prettier version of me.

  40. Stacy Dresden says:

She is absolutely beautiful. She looks like a prettier version of me!

  41. Deedee says:

She reminds me of a young Audrey Hepburn. Just gorgeous and classic. She was also adorable in mirror mirror, and I even liked Julia Roberts in that movie, and she’s not one of my fans to put it mildly.

  42. Palefire says:

Wow ! A true beauty hello rival to the gorge Audrey Hepburn. She’s stunning! Go girl. She’s pretty w/o being a sell out or trampy I like!

  43. faye says:

You know who else had “unconventional” eyebrows? That chick in Breakfast at Tiffanys.

I cant believe people are tripping over themselves over this girl’s eyebrows! Scratch that, I CAN believe it unfortunately.

  44. Liah says:

Looks like she’s doing a (friendlier) version of the McKayla Maroney pout in the first photo. But maybe I’m just obsessed with gymnastics. 😛

  45. KayC says:

Beautiful child, gifted actress, thank god for eye brow plucking. Genes betrayed her.

  46. A says:

When I look at her, I see her eyebrows.
My eyes go directly to her eyebrows and I think this is bad.
Your eyes are supposed to go to her eyes, not her eyebrows.
When you see her you’re supposed to think “Wow, what beautiful eyes!”, but instead you go “Wow, eyebrows!”.
She has beautiful eyes and these big eyebrows are not showing that….Maybe if they were a bit lighter? Maybe they’re too dark for her and that’s why they overpower her? I’m not sure.
All I know is that I don’t think it suits her.
I think of Audrey Hepburn and think of her beautiful big brown eyes and her eyebrows complimented them, they didn’t take away from her beauty.
Same thing with Brooke Shields, I think of her beautiful eyes and that’s how it should be!

  47. Vera says:

Her eyebrows look much better groomed. Although I personally have very slim eyebrows, larger brows look just as nice on certain people. Lily looks good with them when they are groomed. Oh, and also when they aren’t super dark while her hair is rather light. I don’t know if it was for a role or she had just lightened her hair, but for a while I remember her having maybe a medium brown hair colour with some highlights or something, but then her eyebrows were jet black. It wasn’t very flattering. If they’d been lightened a tad with her hair I’m sure it would have been fine, but I just always picture that.

This pictorial is really nice and flattering. She looks very fresh and pretty.

  48. Liv says:

I don’t really find her brows that big of a deal. They are well groomed and shaped, not that thick… just dark next to her pale skin… my brows are think and I only pluck so I do not have a uni and I love them… too thin is soooo lame

  49. Anna says:

I saw Mirror Mirror and I was expecting nothing from her. But she blew me away with how graceful and charming she was. As others were saying, she is the modern Audrey Hepburn. watch here:
