Katie Holmes in Carolina Herrera at the Style Awards: lovely or kind of fug?

Katie Holmes

Katie Holmes made her first official public appearance last night at the Style Awards, which kick off New York Fashion Week, where (for better or worse) Holmes & Yang will show its latest line in a huge show within the tents at Lincoln Center. Certainly, Katie must be burning with nervous energy at the very thought, and my general reaction here is that she looks really tired and in need of a substantial nap.

As far as fashion goes, Katie wore a Carolina Herrera skirt-and-shirt combo, and she was on hand to present the “Designer of the Year” award to Herrera, so that explains her choice of clothing for the evening. Look at her shoes though! The fug booties were obviously left at home in the care of Suri, and while the shirt looks like something we’ve been watching Katie wear all summer long throughout she and Suri’s NYC jaunts, the skirt is just funky enough to add some kick to the outfit. Understated hair and makup complete her look quite nicely, and this is a fairly appropriate way for Katie to make her return to the red carpet.

Nicole Richie was there too and wore a Anthony Vaccarello cutout-styled dress. The color and the fabric of the dress are stunning against Nicole’s skin, but it’s a tad bit too revealing. At least Nicole pulls it off because she’s not so busty — otherwise, it would have been a rather obscene look. Her hair and makeup fit with the offbeat mood of the dress.

Amy Adams attended as well and wore an eggplant Giambattista Valli dress. This dress is acceptable but not very dramatic. I’d like to see Amy take a few more risks on the red carpet, but it’s not like she’s known as a fashion girl either. Perhaps if Amy had gone with loose, flowing curls, she could have made more of an impact here. Those pointy-toed shoes are pretty awful though.

Katie looks very pretty from the neck up. Carolina Herrera designs are for old ladies. Anyway, Katie should try to wear pant suits. With her height, they would fit her perfectly.

    • bros says:

I agree fully she should always wear pants, and boot cut pants at that. she just never knows how to dress her bottom half which is heavier than her top half. lots of women are like that (me included) but she insists on the most unflattering lower half outfits always!

      • Ella says:

I don’t agree that she should always wear boot-cut pants (wouldn’t we all say “there she goes wearing those hideous camel boots with those boot-cut pants again”?) but I do agree that she has an awkward lower half and isn’t very good at dressing it. I think she looks lovely here, however.

    • miriam says:

I also agree, Herrera’s designs tend to be frumpy.

Katie has scary-eyes in all these pics.

      • Lauren says:

Katie has big ears, and plastic surgery. Katie is not graceful, and i wish she would just stay home. She still looks robotic to me.

  2. ladybert62 says:

wow – I hate all of those clothes!

Katie – stand up straight! Pull those shoulder back, hold your head correctly and straighten out those legs. Why do you insist on standing this way?

Also, you need a brighter lipstick.

And Nicole Ritchie – looks old and vulgar in that dress.

    • hello says:

Agree, Katie has horrible posture and needs to straighten out her legs. She is pigeoned toed and needs to work on that. I think if she was standing up straight the outfit would look better. I like the skirt. The shirt is nothing special. Just a shirt…not bad..not great..But, man she really needs to work on her posture. And, I do not like Nicole’s look at all. Dress looks odd on her. It has a Kangaroo pouch on the front. Strange..odd dress

      • bros says:

When I first saw Nicole’s dress, I thought, when did Bai Ling dye her hair????
and then realized that was not bai ling. OUTFIT FAIL

      • Zimmer says:

I think we all know why Kate has gotten so used to that posture….

    • Rumorhasit says:

Ladybert62, your comment sounds just the way I imagined Tom would address Katie, before a night out on the red carpet, awards show, charity fundraiser, interview, heck, anytime she had to venture outdoors for that matter.
Poor Katie went from the honeymoon phase to the makeover phase, giving Tom his very own Real Doll in the process.

  3. gg says:

Oh dear, dreadful slouchy top on Katie, and she needs to try not to stand pigeon-toed like that. Take some ballet lessons or something; worked for me. I agree with Aria on the pants suits.

Nicole is wearing a stripper dress with a not-so-hidden backpack on the front center. I guess she didn’t need to carry a purse? lol

  4. Memphis says:

It’s not a wow outfit (and I don’t like the fit of the skirt) but I think she looks nice. It’s better than anything Tom would have let her wear… And thank God those awful booties were left home (or hopefully left for curbside pickup – fingerscrossed)

  5. cmc says:

HER FEET. Full-grown women should not stand with their feet nervously turned in like a 5 year old! Besides that, I think she looks nice.

I think Nicole looks sexy, and not in an over-the-top way either. I like the look but not for that event- she looks like she’s going to a completely different type of party than Katie and Amy.

    • deehunny says:

this is her go-to pose too. if you look at some older CB posts about KH this isn’t the first time she offended us with her feet.

  6. TrustMeOnThis says:

Katie does look tired. She must have a million things on her mind with her show coming up! Love her shoes. (But can’t the photo sites be arsed to dodge out the reflecto sign in the walking pic?! Lazy!)

Amy looks amazing. The color is perfect on her. I would so wear that dress – if I could pull it off! I can’t, she does. Sequins (and satin) are really unforgiving.

Nicole just looks cray. I know, it’s FASHION! WEEK! But still. Too much going on there, and none of it flattering.

I so hope the H&Y show goes well! As a fellow designer (totally small-time though – we don’t show at fashion week, for starters) I can really empathize.

  7. Angi says:

Amy looks sexy and modest. Two thumbs up from me!

  8. Genevieve says:

    Ohhh…

Katie, you know I love you and I WANT to love your style, BUT…but…(awkward). OK, you always look lovely and very ladylike and exceedingly proper. *whispers in ear*, The outfit is way too matronly for you. 🙁

Fingers crossed for Holmes and Yang. I REALLY want it to succeed for you! :-/

  9. tru tru says:

    Katie looks nice.

  10. maggiegrace says:

I think Nicole Ritchie’s dress is awful, but I’ve got to say, that for the past 6, 7 years, I’ve thought she’s really beautiful

  11. ZigZagZoey says:

I wonder if the Scientologists tried to fix her pigeon toedness, and realized it is a lost cause?

  12. Kiyoshigirl says:

A little extra styling would have helped. I know, I know, she was going for the simple look. It didn’t work.

  13. DEB says:

I love Katie’s look. Give the woman a break; she’s been through hell but got out, with her daughter, like she wanted.

  14. TG says:

I love Katie’s outfit and think she looks lovey for a change. What I don’t understand is why she is standing like a pigeon. Why is it that many celebs have posture problems?

    • DrM says:

I love Katie’s outfit. I really do. I’d happily wear it. The pigeon toed posture though…I just tried to stand like that and you deliberately have to turn your toes in…its a deliberate stance. Now I want to know whY???

      • gg says:

Glad you’re not a real Dr. Because you’re dead wrong. It’s not deliberate.

People are BORN that way (and no that is not a gaga pun). They don’t try to do it on purpose!! I was born with one foot completely turned in, at a right angle to my other foot, wore braces on my legs for two years, and had to work very hard in ballet to get it turned back out again.

        The ignorance … my god.

  15. RobN says:

If pigeon-toed pear was what Katie was going for, then she really nailed it.

  16. HappyMom says:

Horrible. Nicole’s dress looks like something Kim Kardashian would wear.

  17. NYC_girl says:

I don’t really understand why women have to wear revealing clothing like that, and really short skirts. I feel like an old bitch saying this, and I’m not, but WTF is going on? Why can’t you show off your legs or nice chest and not look like a skank and risk flashing the cooch or boob? What about “less is more,” or having class? Or, at least have a shorter skirt and cover the top, or have cleavage and longer skirt. Am I off the mark with this? She looks trashy.

    • HappyMom says:

      This exactly!

    • ZigZagZoey says:

      No, you’re not wrong!
Also ~ WHY do so many women think they HAVE to be blonde, big fake boobied, tan as sh~t, and poured into clothes?
Do they not get it that they all look exactly alike? Eek…

    • NYC_girlisignorant says:

(We’ll see if this gets published lol)

Yeah not only are you an old b*tch, but a rude and judgemental one, (I doubt you look like a million bucks yourself) she doesn’t look trashy at all, as if she doesn’t know how to look good. Dressing her down cuz of one outfit out of ALL the other nice outfits she’s worn recently? Please go sit down somewhere

  18. venny says:

I think Katie’s outfit would be so much better if she just scooted the skirt up a bit more – it looks like it’s sitting too low on her hips and the effect is downplaying any curves.

  19. Kosmos says:

Katie’s outfit is interesting. I see it as being too tailored for an event, and the waist of the skirt bothers me in that it isn’t fitted, which is probably the look they were going for. Although Katie’s shape is nice and balanced, her legs have always been a bit large. I have to confess, I do not care for Nicole Richie’s dress (too much going on), nor Amy Adams’ dress, for some reason.

  20. Mouse says:

Eh, I like the outfit but she still looks frumpy and too casual. Good for her getting away from the Co$, but she’s got a long way to go to being interesting or attractive.

  21. Minnie says:

I love Katie’s style. It looks very pretty.

  22. Becks11980 says:

I quite like the skirt and think she would have looked fantastic if it had been paired with the sky high black (patent?) heels she was pictured wearing a few weeks ago and perhaps a strappy camisole or a bustier/corset type top to make it less matronly.

  23. carol says:

Katie is my new hero, but yeaaaa, standing pigeon-toed is not attractive at all. Go Team, Katie! sometimes she is a complete utter beauty, sometimes not so. I guess – who isn’t!

  24. Veronica says:

Hey so long as she is not wearing those horrible camel ankle booties, hey she looks great!

  25. Sol says:

I love her outfit. The colors suit her. She looks clean, hair is great and has a wonderful collarbone!

The slouchy posture comes from hanging around Tom and surely having to downsize her height.

  26. LucyOriginal says:

B.C. (Before Cruise), Katie used to wear Carolina Herrera. I remember that she even gave an interview on a tv fashion show talking about her CH dresses.

  27. elaine says:

When did Nicole get the bolt-ons?

  28. Bailey says:

Kate’s dress is frumpy dumpy but would make a great mother of the bride dress. Hate the shoes and pigeon toed pose!

  29. bea says:

The problem with her outfit…….the blouse MUST be made from the same fabric and dye as the skirt. No matter how much you think you have matched the blacks, they don’t match.

It would have looked SO much better if she has a black beaded top.

Nicole Richie….is she storing her lap top in the front?

I love Amy’s purple sequins dress! Not crazy about the cut of the neck and sleeves, but I love the rest of it!

  30. carol says:

she does love her camel ankle booties. i loathe them. remind me of the hobit movie.

  31. Nev says:

    work it Nicole!!!

    make-up is amazing!!!!

  32. Francesca says:

Black pants, black shoes would have been better and said, ‘I’m a designer’, instead of whatever the hell this is trying to say…’I’m a busy office gal’?

  33. Debra says:

Forget the clothes. What I want to know is what is with that crooked half assed smile? I cant believe no one talks about it? So irritating.
I hate that smirk more than I hate Tom.
    Seriously.

  34. Ella says:

Tom Cruise or not, this woman has no style. It’s not in her and never will be.

  35. carol says:

of course she has style. I love her style. Katie is absolutely wonderful. She could throw those camel ankle boots away though. those are ghastly all right. No one is perfect. I love her style though. It’s so “normal” middle class at times. Other times, you can see huge amts of money

  36. Ennie says:

I like the outfit… I do think it somehow downplays her large legs a bit, which is good. Her posture is a horror, as always. Being married to the GMD did nothing to improve it.
Nicole… Er… Her chest wasn’t like that before, was it?
Amy… Even sequined, it is too severe for my liking.

  37. Jacq says:

Nicole totally got her boobs done :-/ ugh

  38. Dana M says:

Not a good look for Katie. The skirt fits her awkwardly.

  39. A Fan says:

Sigh. Katie Holmes has no concept of what to wear for her body shape. She dresses for the opposite type of figure she actually has – accentuates legs/ankles; hides upper body.

Maybe there’s a possibility she knows how poorly she’s dressing and doesn’t give a rat’s ass, but, if she’s a *cough* ‘designer’, that probably isn’t true.

Katie: Please, please look at some photographs of yourself…it’s not that difficult to figure out…and find clothes that actually fit properly…as well as ones that accentuate your most flattering parts. Stacy and Clinton can help you!

She’s got a tricky shape to work with, but it’s not impossible.

One more thing: The pigeon-toed stance is beyond ridiculous.

  40. Lindy says:

I actually love that tailored, classic look on Katie Holmes–that crisp black dressy blouse is gorgeous on her. But she has for the hundredth time gotten the skirt length all wrong. She cannot wear that below-knee, tea-length hem–it magnifies her wide calves. All wrong. Shorten the skirt, stand up straight and stop the pigeon toe thing, and all shall be well.

All I can say about Nicole is WTF?

    • Devyn says:

      +1

Maybe I’m old fashioned but I adore Katie’s outfit… except for the hem length, which doesn’t flatter her.

That pigeon toe thing drives me up the wall. Why does everyone do it? :/

      • gg says:

Making fun of hip dysplasia? Really? Wow, that is really cold. People don’t “do this” it’s a birth defect ffs!

  41. anonimouse8319 says:

As long as you guys understand that there are probably 100s of pictures shot that night, but what is placed here took one of the worst poses.

  42. serena says:

Well.. Katie’s outfit was not bad but..come on it’s the fashion week!! She needs to put out the best of her for her big return! She needs to be glamour and amazing, I want to see her like that!

  43. Jen says:

Ugh – Katie is like Jessica Biel in that they both insist on being fashionistas when they are. just. not. They’re both pretty, girl-next-door types rather than fashion models. Wish they would stop.
