AA is not treatment, it is not therapy, it is a support group run by people who have no professional training in addictions.

AA is a support group that has been founded on certain principles by other alcoholics/addicts. It is not based on research or medicine. AA SHOULD NOT BE USED IN PLACE OF PROFESSIONAL ADDICTION TREATMENT.

AA is simply a tool that one can use to maintain sobriety after treatment. It can be recommended as one part of an individuals’s relapse prevention program, but not all programs, and not all addiction counsellors, recommend it.

The same can be said about Al-Anon. It is a support group for those negatively effected by someone else’s addiction. It is not family therapy, it is not individual therapy.

AS for your comment, that loved ones of alcoholics shouldn’t HAVE TO attend meetings such as Al-Anon because they are not the one with the addiction is again not accurate in the world of addiction treatment. Family dynamics, codependency and enabling are important issues in addictions, that go beyond the individual addict.

As someone who has studied and worked in addictions, a RESPONSIBLE family member should be helping an addict/alcoholic, not doing things that work against them. Yes, an addict is responsible for their own behaviour, but a parent is responsible for providing guidance and support especially when it involves an addiction. In fact, support is so crucial that an addict is advised to distance themselves from people in their lives who will not support their struggle to stay sober, even if that includes family members. Having a drink in front of a family member who is an alcoholic, is not considered supportive or acceptable behaviour.

Support is necessary for the lifetime of an addict because addiction is a life long health issue. It doesn’t matter whether a person is sober, whether they have never been to rehab, whether they have been to rehab 10 times, or how long ago they were in rehab.

Addictions are life long struggles and from everything I have learned, the people who have the greatest success are those who have strong support systems in place, particularly supportive family and close friends.

Dina would know this if: a) she had spent 30 minutes talking to an addiction counsellor, b) she wasn’t an alcoholic herself.

if dina and michael lohan were RESPONSIBLE, AND WELL-ADJUSTED parents i would say that the only thing dina could do for lindsay at this point, as a 26 year old drug-addled trainwreck, would be to do a 5150 and then a conservatorship like britney spears’ father. but it seems like those two immature famewhores need guardians themselves and who would trust them not to steal lindsay’s money? if dina’s looking for the sketchy person who ruined her daughters life, all she needs to do is look in the mirror.
