Anne Hathaway married Adam Shulman in Big Sur, CA on Saturday

Anne Hathaway married her Ryan Gosling-looking dude yesterday! Annie made it official with Adam Shulman after they had been dating for some-odd four years. They were married in Big Sur, which is where Natalie Portman married Benjamin Millepied over the summer too. There are even rumors that Annie used Portman’s wedding planners. I’m including some photos which we surprisingly have access too – you can’t make out every detail of Anne’s Valentino gown, but you get the idea. A full skirt made of tulle, it seems. Off-the-shoulder, with a fitted bodice. Some kind of large headpiece with an attached veil. It seems very princessy and “classic” which makes sense for Anne.

Anne Hathaway is a married woman. The actress, 29, tied the knot with Adam Shulman, 31, on Saturday night in scenic Big Sur on the California coast, PEOPLE confirms.

More than 100 guests were invited for the wedding weekend, which started Friday with a rehearsal dinner at the Ventana Inn and Spa. A nearby private estate was secured for the ceremony. And Valentino provided a custom gown, the designer confirmed last week.

The wedding décor was inspired by nature, with many branches used to create a ceremony and reception to blend in with the majestic Big Sur surroundings, a source tells PEOPLE.

The couple, who have been together four years, got engaged last November.

“I am very much in love with him, [only] Adam totally ruined my plan,” the star of the Princess Diaries and the upcoming Les Misérables said last year of their relationship. “I was really actually looking forward to a little alone time, and then I fell in love like a fool!”

Hathaway and Shulman, an actor and jewelry designer, celebrated their engagement at a party in New York in February with 125 friends and family members where, “some of the family was meeting each other for the first time,” a source told PEOPLE at the time.

As for what makes Hathaway and Shulman click, the actress told USA Today last year that they both enjoy their normal, low-key lifestyle.

“We have house parties and dinner parties and just hang out,” Hathaway said. “I’m so delighted by [Adam]. He’s all the things you want a partner to be. I so find joy in his presence.”

[From People]

You know what surprises me? That they managed to get married so quickly – reportedly, Anne was looking at a fall 2013 wedding because she was so busy this year. Perhaps she figured that if she did it now, she’d have an added boost to her promotion of Les Mis, and the accompanying Oscar campaign. I know, that’s cynical. But it’s also so true, just you wait. There were also rumors back in July that Anne was pregnant – a quickie Big Sur wedding might cause another round of those rumors, and I could also see “pregnancy” being a good angle on her Oscar campaign too. It worked for Natalie Portman! Anyway, congrats to Anne and Adam! I hope they’re very happy together.

In the third picture, what exactly is his hand up to?…
Congrats to them, it looks very fairytale-esque. Not my kind of thing, but it definitely seems likes Anne’s taste.
Also, could someone enlighten me as to why getting hitched would help an Oscar campaign? A baby I could understand, but I’m woefully ignorant about these kind of things. 🙂

    • RocketMerry says:

Ditto on the hand, I want to know what was going on there =)

As for the campaigning, every Oscar hopeful needs an angle, a perspective on which their team can build a nice strategy. Think of it as a mini political campaign, the procedure is somewhat similar, only the public opinion on the candidate influences a very, very small pool of voters. So, marriage is going to be Anne’s angle.
I agree with Kaiser, if she could manage to get knocked up by December it would be perfect (although after this year the women of HW may want to find new angles to play, because “preggo-married” is becoming overused).
And yeah, so cynical and not-so-naive… so Anne.

    • Nessa says:

Anne wants it bad this year. Expect a strong Oscar campaign from her. This is only the beginning…

      • Camille (TheOriginal) says:

        +1.

Completely agree. It’s going to be Anne over load come Oscar campaign season. I’m worn out just thinking about it.

      • evieS says:

I’m just confused, I guess. I’m pretty familiar with Les Mis, and I just don’t see how the role she’s playing could put her up for Best Actress. Fantine is a supporting role. I mean, she dies just a little way into the story. Surely she isn’t campaigning so hard for a Best Supporting Oscar?

      • normades says:

This. It’s a supporting role. Also JLaw will be nominated for Best Actress, meaning Anne will not be the star.

      • stellalovejoydiver says:

@normades: I think Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Aaron Paul have really good chances getting nominated for Smashed.
        http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/smashed/

      • normades says:

        That would be awesome

    • EmmaStoneWannabe says:

Anyone who has ever been in one of those terrible Gary Marshall films, ‘Valentine’s Day,’ ‘New Years Eve’ etc, does not need to be receiving an Oscar. They include the likes of Alba, Kutcher, Biel, Queen Latifa, Lea Michele etc…NO just NOOOO.

    • megs283 says:

Those dresses are very disorienting…for our kiss on the altar, my husband accidentally got a handful of my bum…for all of my family to see. He aimed for my waist and got lost in the gown!

  2. Liv says:

Congrats. They are a cute couple.

But wait a moment, he is a jewelry designer? Aren’t that all the rich girls who can’t act or model or whatever? Weird. Plus he always seems to be around her – nothing wrong with that, but designing jewelrys is apparently hardly successful, huh.

  3. Birdie says:

Very 80’s. Well congrats and a happy life you two.

  4. Snarky says:

    That headpiece is atrocious.

Also, can she just go away now??

    • notpretentious says:

+1. I really don’t get the hype about her.

    • Nicolette says:

+2. She annoys me for reason. And what’s up with that headpiece? She looks like she’s post surgery or something. Awful!

      • emmieapricot says:

Exactly! Post surgery — or one of those frilly things you put on a baby to dress-up or hide their bald head. I don’t like it at all. Then again, I don’t think I have liked any of the Valentino creations she has worn.

    • Pamspam says:

Yes – she bugs me too!!! And that headpiece…fugly!

    • bns says:

I can’t stand her either. I like watching her onscreen, but when she’s out of character she gets on my nerves. I feel the same way about Kate Winslet.

    • CooCooCatchoo says:

The headpiece looks like the one in “Bram Stoker’s Dracula.”. You know, the one that they buried Lucy in.
And the dress looks tutu much – pun intended

    • GoodCapon says:

      Fug headpiece, I agree.

It’s not even the Oscar season yet and you already want her to go away ! LOL good luck 😉

    • normades says:

I HATE the headpiece. Lilly Allen, Kate Moss had cute ones, but this looks terrible.

  5. Eleonor says:

I don’t know what does she have on her head, but I suppose it’s something they made because of her short hair.
That dress it’s like I’ve imagined it: a big big princess gown, it’s suit her. Congrats!

  6. serena says:

    Horrible head-piece!

    • brin says:

Agreed…looks like she got hit on the head and needed bandages.
Anyhoo, congrats to Anne and her man.

      • j.eyre says:

Head trauma was my first thought too. It’s too bad because a little fascinator with attached veil would have been darling with short hair. I am going to hope for a vintage/it-was-my-grandmother’s angle.

      • normades says:

It does look like a bandage

    • lulu says:

      +1000
But the dress is beautiful and fairytale ish, congrats on your wedding Anne, hope it lasts long I’m tired of breakups and of Kstew-Rpatz kind of fake-publicity couples

    • Izzy says:

Apparently, Anne Hathaway also has a Turban of IDGAF…

  7. bettyrose says:

Congrats. Another example of how a-list actresses can do so much better if they avoid dating a-list dbag actors.

    • TG says:

I agree, hope he is a nice guy. He can’t be too bad if he has been with her for 4 years and hasn’t ruined her yet. I will wait until I can see clear photos of the headpiece before condmening it but right now it isn’t looking good.

  8. lisa2 says:

The dress is very pretty. Not my taste. not into the princess looks. But it is lovely.

I don’t like the head piece. Her hair had grown out to a cute cut. The head piece is in conflict with the dress. TOO much. It should have been worn with a more sleeker dress/fitted. it is just too much happening.

but congrats to the happy couple

  9. Jackie O says:

she looks like a head injury victim.

  10. L says:

Well, the headpiece is on bridal trend (if you check out bhldn and twigs and honey there are similar styles) but from the blurry picture it looks weird.

I’m not feeling the sparkles on the train. If they are this loud on a blurry picture from a pap-I can’t imagine how they are up close.

I feel weird watching something a private event, but congrats to the happy couple.

  11. Jenny says:

The dress is pretty, a bit much for me, but pretty. It does not fit the whole, “outdoors in nature” theme though. It belongs in a cathedral. The headpiece is more twenties flapper but I agree that it also could be a bandage.

I love the setting though, Big Sur is magnificent. Wonder if they have the ocean view somewhere, which is one of the best things about Big Sur.

  12. T.C. says:

Why does it look like his left hand is at her biscuit? Lol. Don’t get the country side thing but they look good together.

  13. Fudge you, I'm going to Guam! says:

So I wonder if Meryl Streep was invited…

  14. Jayna says:

The dress is fantastic. The headpiece is just awful. It’s looks like something you make at home. It’s huge. If she hates her short hair, this wasn’t the way to go.

  15. Kennedy says:

A very very very very poor mans Ryan Gosling, Kaiser! Seems like a nice dude though. Congrats to the both of them!

I don’t think I could ever get married with my hair so short… I have had my wedding hair style planned out for FAR too long but kudos to her for having the balls to just go for it.

As for the Oscar campaign- I still can’t wrap my head around the fact that Anne may very well be an Oscar winner come February and Amy Adams will likely just remain a 4 time Oscar nominee. WTF… where is justice when you need it!

P.s. It looks like she has more hair than she really does…? Is she wearing extensions? Do they make extensions for hair THAT short?!

    • carrie says:

1:he looks like the son of Mark Zukerberg (the real) and Ryan Gosling for me
2:i like how she lied on her wedding to the media
3:i guess she worked on her Valentino wedding dress since last year:they came to Valentino show at Paris’s Fashion week in july
4: her dress seems fantastic and she doesn’t look pregnant

  16. Elly says:

The gown seems to be beautiful, but the headpiece? Looks like toilet paper or something like that.

  17. Lucy2 says:

The dress looks pretty but I don’t care for the headpiece.
What a lovely place to get married, I bet it was beautiful.

  18. Loralei says:

    Head injury patient gets married.

  19. Marianne says:

I love the dress, but feeling the headdress.

  20. Rita says:

Congrats!! Something tells me this Hollywood marriage will have staying power.

  21. pinchofsalt says:

Why didn’t she take the bandages off first? Yikes.

  22. Nina says:

My first reaction: I feel bad for her that she had her wedding before her hair grew out.

  23. Shelly says:

I’m not sure about her dress. It’s very puffy. And I feel mean for saying this, but I feel kind of bad for her that she got married with her hair still so short. I find it really unattractive on her. She looks so beautiful with long hair. I would have waited until my hair grew out!!

  24. Nicolette says:

Please do not compare this man to the gorgeousness that is Ryan Gosling.

  25. Lem says:

Really don’t mean to sound negative. Looks like they are standing in the driveway. WtF? Who gets married in a driveway rut?
    Congrats :/

    • GoodCapon says:

That was my first thought as well but I’m sure they have a professional photographer around who knows how to get the right shots.

So we see driveway rut, the photographer sees (insert poetic description of a landscape here)

  26. Kate says:

Anne Hathaway, Oscar winner. I can’t. Just no. Please…no.

    • Aotearovian says:

Ha – that would bother me way less than Portman, Roberts and Berry, to name a few.

It’s like there are so few leading actresses that if you manage to hang out long enough you’ll get a turn, even for a really average role (compared to the typical Best Actor-winning role) – The Blind Side, for instance. Sandra Bullock did the best anyone could have, but what an average part.

I guess they can’t give it to Meryl Streep every year.

      • Mira says:

Absolutely, but it’s not the number of leading ladies being so few, it’s that the roles written for female actors are lousy compared to the ones written for male actors. Look at some of the potential nominees for best male actor this year – Joaquin Phoenix, PSH, Daniel Day-Lewis, Bull Murray, John Hawkes – and the roles written for them. All performance showcasing, challenging roles. Compare this to the potential female best actor nominees and their roles – J. Lawrence, Helen Hunt, Keira Knightley etc.

  27. Dee Cee says:

Awful.. like my aunt with her hair up in pin curls and wrapped to sleep in.. really sad, she looks so thin., the dress doesn’t flatter her.. and ew.. Miss Jane Hathaway gets married on a dirty hillside..

  28. samira25 says:

The dress is nice but not my taste. Agree with everybody else that the headpiece is ugly.

I really don’t understand the comments “getting married/pregnant for votes”. I have hard time believing that voters are planning to vote for Meryl Streep but because of this marriage they quickly changed their minds and decided to vote for Anne. Also wasn’t Natalie Portman a huge favorite before she was even pregnant? Again, I have a hard time believing they were voting one way but completely changed their minds because of pregnancy.

  29. bns says:

I wanna know who was on the guest list. And what is it with celebrity weddings and Big Sur?

    • Stacy Dresden says:

Big Sur has always been a hideout of sorts for the rich and famous. It is rustic yet elegant, coastal and wooded, and located halfway between LA and SF. There are both little tucked-away lodges and resorts as fabulous as could be imagined. It would be an incredible place to have a wedding.

  30. Sabrine says:

There seem to be a lot of brides who have gorgeous gowns but ruin it with the awful contraptions they wear on their heads. I wonder if she posed for wedding photos with her head bandaged up like that?

  31. Me says:

I think she went to the Jennie Garth school of wedding head looks.

  32. Tania says:

Its not my style at all but she looks beautiful and is glowing. That is some gorgeous light, I’ll bet those photos will be stunning.

And we all know that Oscars aren’t ALWAYS about who deserves it the most, right?

  33. Tania says:

Its not my style at all but she looks beautiful and is glowing. That is some gorgeous light, I’ll bet those photos will be stunning. And we all know that Oscars aren’t always about who deserves it the most, right?

  34. valleymiss says:

That headpiece…oy. I wonder if today she’s having a Carrie Bradshaw “I put a BIRD on my head” moment. 😀

  35. Gine says:

The dress looks like it could be lovely (kind of hard to tell) but that headpiece, ugh. It really does look like she has a head injury.

And to those saying it’s weird that they got married outside on what looks like a driveway–I highly doubt that’s where they had the ceremony (especially since there doesn’t seem to be any other people around), it looks like they just went outside to take some pictures afterwards, which is what most couples I know have done at their weddings.

  36. Mira says:

Anne bugs me. She made for a terrible cat-woman in TDKR. Weren’t there rumors of Bale and her sitting on tree on the sets of TDKR? I’m rooting for Amy Adams and I’ll be disappointed if Anne’s Oscar campaign works in her favor. Of course this can only be decided after seeing Les Misérables. Still, I’d vote for Amy Adams.

Seriously, what’s with this bullshit campaigning? I understand the need to campaign but why bring in a personal angel to it? How does Michelle Williams or Natalie Portman being a good mother make them a good actor? Aren’t they all supposed to be judged for their performance on-screen and not off it? Look at Clooney and Pitt. They sold their private lives to every damn magazine last year and yet Jean Dujardin took home the trophy. I hope we don’t get to hear another round of “I’m a mother first and an actress second” or “I’m a real woman with a real life” blah blah again.

  37. Holly Hobby says:

I wished she did without the toilet paper roll on her head. Yes she has issues with the hair but this just makes us focus on her head more!

  38. the original bellaluna says:

Congrats to them, both on their wedding and on not nauseating us with all the up-to-the-second-overshare of plans.

I’m liking this “secret celebrity wedding” trend. Now, about this Tie-Dye-Hair trend…

  39. SleepyJane says:

She’s like that annoying girl from high school who everyone hated, but she could never quite get the hint.

    • Fudge you, I'm going to Guam! says:

I think (some) people find her annoying because she’s always “on”.
She tap dances while juggling 3 balls in the air all the while smiling with her teeth wide open.
She reminds me a lot of those theater geeks who try so hard to be loved, they’re everything to everybody.
“Hiii darling! You look gorgeous! mwah-mwah, what is that? Oh a flute? I LOVE playing the flute, I started when I was 4 and never quit…oh HI MICHELLE!! Gotta run! Lunch? Brunch? Call me OK!! Ciaooo!!”
And they’re always teachers pets too.

  40. Aria says:

Another actress that needs to go away. Talented? not so much. Pretty? hell no!

  41. Quinn says:

She’s just a little too precious for my taste.

  42. MiMi says:

I adore her. She’s talented, professional, and generally held in good esteem by those with whom she has worked. She deserves her personal happiness and career accolades.

    • Tif says:

      +1

I guess I understand why people don’t like her, but there are many others to hate on that have much worse qualities, imo.

  43. Elena says:

Congratulations to the happy couple! I wish them long and joyous life together!

  44. Madison says:

What was she thinking, that headpiece is all kinds of awful it ruins an otherwise pretty dress.

  45. lrm says:

‘I so find joy in his presence’?????
omg; she lost me at that.
    I think i’m gonna barf….
that statement is ridiculous and wanna be pretentious….

  46. Carolyn says:

    I think Anne looks lovely.

  47. Ang says:

I squealed when I saw this, I got married yesterday too and Anne Hathaway is my favorite, ha ha. Congrats Anne!

    • renata says:

CONGRATULATIONS!!! That’s great news. I wish you all the very best and hope you have a wonderful life together!

  48. GoodCapon says:

    Oops, wrong post. Sorry!

  49. Suze says:

I find short hair and bridal attire to be fine together – I don’t see any reason to feel bad for her because of her hair length.

It’s a very princessy dress, not my style, but I think it suits her.

  50. baja says:

agree: IDIOTS WILL ALWAY’S BE AROUND TOWN!!

  51. Hayley says:

I get the dress, but that awful headpiece seems like she’s either subconsciously sabotaging herself, or she’s screaming for even more attention on a day when all of the attention would be focused on her anyway. It looks like she has a swan on her head. Well, part of one, anyway….

  52. Susan says:

Um – the whole idea that babies and a wedding might help an Oscar campaign. Not really. Natalie won because she is an excellent actress. In reality people win because they are good at what they do – not becuase of how they display their personal life. I realize that some hollywood actors (eg Brad Pitt) believe that if they sell their personal life enough they will win that Oscar. But he is proof that selling your personal life just won’t win you that statue.

  53. lene says:

    congratulations to her..wish her happiness

  54. alons-y alonso says:

Congrats to Anne and her husband.
Re: Oscars. Really? I’d rather Anna Hathaway win over Kiera Knightly – the most overrated actress since Natalie Portman.

  55. Deens says:

I actually love her short hair, and the dress AND the hairpiece. It’s very 1920s. I have been to literally 10 weddings in the past year and every single bride wore the same boring old strapless dress and even more boring up-do. There is not enough personal style injected into people’s wedding choices. Instead everyone goes for the same bland, safe cookie cutter bridal look. Kudos to Anne!

  56. Maritza says:

The hairpiece is so 1920, I love it! She looks really beautiful. Congratulations to both.

  57. Gal says:

I don’t get these pics at all. It looks like they’re standing in a middle of a field somewhere, was this the ceremony? Or did they just decide to give the paps a photo up afterwards.

Love the headpiece! Very beginning of the century, and I’m sure it looked stunning in real life. Not every bride needs to look cookie cutter people…

  58. Andrea says:

Am I the only one who finds it odd she married the man she rebounded with after that ponzy guy went to prison? She was with that guy 4 years too! Don’t get me wrong, I hope she is happy, she went through enough, but from my experience no one stays forever with a rebound! The headpiece is not for me, but if she liked it, that’s all that matters!
