Her response was just to assure the kid that she could be home-schooled, instead of pointing out that jerks are everywhere and it's best to ignore them and go on your merry way. Some kids, especially those with unhappy family lives, will zero in on any difference at all and try to make themselves feel better by putting someone else down. Bullies are not happy people. Just knowing that can help with the internal attitude adjustment needed to deal with it. Other types of bullying should not exist in a properly run school, for such things to happen requires a lot of blindfolds on the adults. The non-bullies need to realize they greatly outnumber the bullies also and work together to solve such problems. There are ways to encourage kids to actively develop such skills- the playground mediation project, for example. I had a friend like that, she was always considering herself as abused and rejected when actually people were being nice to her, just not reciprocating her passionate fantasies about them. For instance, she was angry with one work colleague who wouldn't date her because he already had a girlfriend, she thought he should at least "give her a chance". She rewrote history in her head a lot in non-romantic contexts also, as I discovered when she started rewriting my own history...
