Pink covers Shape, talks about her 55-lbs weight loss & ‘mostly vegan’ diet

Pink covers the November issue of Shape Magazine, showing off her postpartum weight loss. Pink gave birth in June 2011, and she took her time losing the “55 pounds” she put on during her pregnancy. That’s her figure, not mine. I guess it sounds somewhat accurate. Previously, Pink joked that after she gave birth, “I just felt like a mess… I gained 55lbs. I think my baby may be part cheesecake.” Well, Pink worked hard – and I do believe her weight loss came from exercise and a vegan diet, as opposed to a tummy tuck and a cigarette-and-ice-chip diet. And now she’s talking about the results:

Pink‘s tough-as-nails attitude has softened a little bit up since giving birth to daughter Willow Sage in June 2011 — but her body has only gotten more rock solid. The 33-year-old, who is married to motocross racer Carey Hart, gained 55 pounds during her pregnancy, indulging on her favorite sweet treats.

“I hate a lot of cheesecake during those nine months,” she told Shape magazine. “Also, anything sour; Sour Skittles, Sour Patch Kids, key lime pie.”

But eight weeks after giving birth — she didn’t want to “rush” back into losing weight — she started training with celebrity trainers Jillian Michaels and Jeanette Jenkins.

“They both kicked my butt more than any other person I’ve worked out with,” she said. “The’re both amazing, and their bodies were all the inspiration I needed to get back into shape.”

Pink’s routine changed up every day, but always included a heavy dose of cardio and a lot of strength training. She did interval treadmill routines, power yoga, and kickboxing. She only sees Jeanette five days a week now, but says she’s gotten “great results.”

The proud mom also feeds herself and her family a mostly vegan diet, with green favorites such as arugula and asparagus, and healthy carbs including cous cous and brown rice. There’s no denying the singer is in amazing shape, but she insists being a mom is what makes her happiest.

“It’s just pure joy for Carey and me. Willow has made us more fun — we’re this cool little threesome,” she gushed.

Pink also confessed to her previous “wild child” ways – she started smoking at just nine-years-old and overdosed in a nightclub at the age of 15.

“I was 9 [when I started smoking]. By the time I turned 12 I was smoking a pack a day. I quit when I got pregnant. Unlike before [Willow was born], cigarettes smell repulsive to me.”

As for the drugs, she took as a teen: “I was into ecstasy, Special K, crystal meth, acid – you name it.”

[From Enstarz & Hollywood Life]

Am I the only one irritated by “She only sees Jeanette five days a week now…”? ONLY? Like, they’re passive-aggressively saying that she’s lazy for not working out seven days a week. Maybe that just irritates me – I work out four times a week, and sometimes I worry that I’m overdoing it. And I’ve heard from many trainers that it’s better to let your body rest for more than 24 hours before doing another intensive workout.

I always forget that Pink is vegan too – she should be the face of veganism, as opposed to someone like Lea Michele, who all too often looks TOO slender, in my opinion. Pink looks healthy, fit and strong. There should be more vegans like Pink.

I love Pink but the photo-shopping of the Shape cover is ridiculous, she looks fine the way she is.

    • Victoria says:

In reality she and kisha have body like spngebob.

    • EmmaStoneWannabe says:

Agree…On the cover, long, slender muscles. Reality, she has short, thick muscles. They distorted the entire shape of her ROCKIN body….not cool.

      • Umlaut says:

That Photoshopping is obnoxious. As a short woman with some serious muscles, I would LOVE to see someone with a body type like mine being presented as acceptable. (And no, I don’t look like Spongebob.)

Sure, I’d love to be long and lean, but I work hard to maintain my strength, fitness, and flexibility. There are all kinds of beautiful, media.

  2. Bird says:

I love her. She looks great!

  3. natalina says:

i love pink, my dad loves pink (i know, how weird), everyone loves pink

    • Peanut says:

Lol do I know you in real life? My good friend’s Dad loves Pink too. I thought he was the only one. 🙂

  4. MoxyLady007 says:

    I love Pink.

  5. Sweet Dee says:

Look at her thighs! So much muscle. I want them! They would come in handy for snowboarding season.

I love her personality, face and body, and wish I could support her music but I kind of hate it.

    • MorticiansDoItDeader says:

If you had them, you would hate them. I too wanted to look like that and did some super intense strength training for 18 months. I went from a lithe, runner’s body to a broad muscular body. I stopped the weight training and switched to pilates, TRX and running and I’m just starting to look more feminine.

  6. Jenna says:

Her body’s ridiculous! Wish I had that. And from my understanding, the workout routine should be: one day on, one day off?

    • Umlaut says:

I don’t necessarily think so. But it is smart to alternate exercises so you’re not constantly working the same groups. My routine:

Sundays: 2-hour intense hot yoga (or nothing!)
      Monday: easy yoga
      Tuesday: run and plyometrics
      Wednesday: intense yoga
      Thursday: run and Zumba
      Friday: intense yoga
Saturday: hike or bike with the family

Wow. I just realized I look like a crazy person…but I love it and have found that I can easily work out every day (and often more than once a day) so long as I vary my exercises.

    • Sweet Dee says:

LOL no that’s wrong. You should absolutely work out more than every other day. Vary your routine, etc. but every other day is slacking!

  7. MrsBPitt says:

I love Pink…but, I shook my head at the “only work out 5 times a week” comment too…ONLY…I work full time, have 2 kids and a husband, housework, laundry, cooking, shopping and errands to do…and I can only workout…um…zero times a week…I’m freakin tired!

    • V4Real says:

The 5 days a week comment bothered me to. But I’m sure if we had personal trainers and nannies we could probably do it too.

I’ve been a fan of Pink for awhile and I always thought her body was amazing. She looks fantastic.

      • Agnes says:

        Pink looks great!

And yeah, if I had a nanny and a trainer, I could work out more than zero times a week too. Alas, having an infant and no nanny prevents that. 🙂

    • Pamela says:

The article says that when she was working on losing the 55lbs that she was working with TWO trainers. When they say she is only working with Jennette 5 times a week–they may mean that she no longer works with Jillian. If that is the subtext–it comes across less snark-worthy. (Though I have trouble working out at all…so I still am jealous of the wealthy that can afford nannies and personal trainers)

      • Fatkid says:

I agree Pamela, at first I read “only 5 times” then I reread and got “only with Jeanette”

    • Carolyn says:

I couldn’t have said it better. I’d look awesome too if I had PT sessions 5 times a week 🙂

Yes I LOVE Pink too. She just rocks. That cheesy “Shape” cover is hilarious.

  8. Nanz says:

Only 5 days/wk w/ a personal trainer, huh? What a lazy bones. I kid. She’s awesome for having a healthy attitude about diet and exercise. But for me, 5 days/wk is too much. I’m lucky to get 3-4 with no trainer.

    • lizzi says:

I’m the same way.. I’m always exhausted and just want to hang out with my hubbs. I usually do tuesday-friday. I hate working out on weekends!

  9. Eileen says:

I LOVE Pink!! That is all.

  10. ronnie says:

    I need that POP shirt.

  11. hoya_chick says:

Haha Kaiser! That’s exactly what I thought, ONLY 5 times a week? Well excuse me. Lol. Because of my schedule I can only work out towards the end of the week—Thurs-Sunday. Two of those days are with a trainer (who I pinch pennies to be able to afford) the other two days I take whatever class is being offered and the other I try to get a 2 hour workout in by myself cardio and strength training. I think that’s pretty good, but obviously not by celeb standards. Ha.

She has always looked fit and athletic so I can buy that she works out hard. I didn’t know she was a vegan though. Interesting. She looks good.

  12. Mirella says:

    I love her!

  13. Canda says:

I don’t see the point in veganism. Vegetarianism, yes, but going vegan is way overboard and unecessary… you can’t eat honey or drink milk? WTF!

    • Christina says:

They don’t even eat honey?!! Ok, that’s too much. I wasn’t aware of the mistreatment of bees.

      • k says:

My understanding is that (in general) vegans don’t approve of the use of honey because most honey is in a sense factory farmed, forcing the bees to subsist on sugar water instead of their own substantially nutritive honey. Again, in general, vegans do not support the exploitation of animals.

As honey is not the only product derived from bees (bee venom, bee pollen, royal jelly, etc.), vegans have several reasons to avoid honey. Add to the fact that most refined sugar (fed to the bees) is often laced with bone char, and you have another non-vegan friendly reason. Anyway, that’s the jist of things.

    • goodquestion says:

The dairy industry actually causes more suffering to animals than the beef industry – both to the dairy cows and the calves (half of whom are crated to become veal). And “free-range” farms are poorly regulated – there have been numerous criminal cruelty cases over the last year of so-called free-range farms. The videos would shock you.
This year, 4 states passed “Ag Gag” laws, which make it a criminal offense to film inside a factory farm facility. They *really* don’t want the public to know what’s going on.
Also, most dairy is full of antibiotics and hormones that disfigure and harm the cows, and are bad for human health.

If your question is genuine, then I suggest you do some research. The information is out there, people just have to care to find it.

      • Lisa says:

I don’t eat dairy, but I thought that it was illegal to use hormones on cows? In Canada, any way.

      • June says:

Have you ever questioned what they put in the feed?

And yes, for those of you who question the vegan diet, please do your research, and I mean REAL research, and then get back to us.

      • busy ramone says:

I don’t know if it’s actually illegal in Canada, but I do know when Monsanto came out with the rBGH that was injected into American dairy herds for decades (and I believe was recently stopped due to lawsuits regarding its FDA approval process which was apparently illegal) the only reason it wasn’t approved in Canada is because a few Health Canada scientists came forward as whistleblowers about how they were being strong-armed by the industry into approving it despite their concerns. It was a big deal, back in the day, although the media likely did a piss-poor job of covering it.

      • the original bellaluna says:

Lisa – It’s not illegal in the US, and once they started injecting that rBGH into cow, I got hives like you’ve never seen from the cottage cheese and yogurt. It was AWFUL. I could only buy Alta Dena, a local farm the city bought, put out of business, and used the land for real estate ventures.

Now, it’s “a thing” (a matter of pride or an excuse to charge more, you decide) to label dairy products as “rBGH-free.” They’re the only ones I buy for my family, for obvious reasons.

    • Bubbaang says:

I like Pink and like that she doesn’t get all “preachy-preachy” about her vegan lifestyle.

Her body looks amazing and she looks so healthy.

  14. MW says:

I think when it says she only sees Jeanette 5 days a week now, it means she doesn’t see Jillian anymore. Not that she thinks working out 5 days a week slacking off.

  15. Sam says:

I just dislike the term “mostly vegan.” To me, there just isn’t any such thing. There’s Omnivore (a person who consumes any meat), Vegetarian (cosumes animal products other than meat, but no meat) and Vegan (no animal products at all).

I’m a vegetarian. I have a friend who identifies as “mostly vegan.” The problem is when she drops by for dinner or something – I never know what to make. Is she having a vegan day? Is she having a non-vegan day? If so, is it okay to serve her meat? Cheese? I never know.

It’s just a little pet peeve of mine. My diet could be considered “mostly vegan” given that I only eat cheese and yogurt perhaps once a week or so (I don’t do any eggs, honey or meat at all). But I don’t say it because, well, its not really true and its not totally accurate. I’m not knocking Pink, since it seems like she didn’t actually call herself mostly vegan, the magazine did. But I find the term truly confusing.

    • Lisa says:

Haha, I feel you. It’s hard to know what to serve to someone who waffles like that.

On second thought, I could just make waffles.

    • k says:

Just make a few vegan options if you invite your friend to dinner, and stop worrying so much.

      • Sam says:

That would make sense, but some people will get pissy if they aren’t served what they wnat on any particular day. I treat people who say they are “mostly vegan” like vegans, but in my experience, they usually use visits to others’ homes as the time to eat meat or other animal products. My friend has a tendency to refer to herself as vegan but will usually not eat the veggies I serve and will pinch the chicken off my husband’s plate. And she isn’t the only person I’ve met to do this. Frankly, now, if somebody says to me that they’re “mostly vegan” I go ahead and treat them like a vegetarian or omnivore. Just to make a point.

    • busy ramone says:

If you’re a vegetarian why would you serve someone meat anyways?

      • Moneypenny says:

She’s not serving meat, she’s talking about serving something that might have eggs, dairy, honey, etc. that vegans do not eat.

    • the original bellaluna says:

This is the problem our family had with my sister (she went back and forth on what she would eat) and my daughter (who did the same thing) when we all got together for holidays and family dinners.

It was hard on my parents (who provided the lion’s share of said dinners) and the rest of us, who provided side dishes and desserts.

We eventually decided that they could eat crudite and pass on whatever didn’t suit them (before they grew out of it, that is). That sounds harsh, I know, but my parents are already really REALLY healthy, conscientious eaters and they instilled that in us, as well.

      • Aotearovian says:

I’m vegetarian, and I never expect special dishes when eating at someone’s house.

There’s always food that isn’t meat, and I’m happy with that. I don’t feel anyone should be expected to cater to guests’ food choices – different if it’s an allergy or intolerance at issue.

But going back and forth on what you can/can’t eat shouldn’t be of concern to whomever’s doing the cooking.

All of which is just to say that your parents’ response is totally reasonable and not harsh at all. People should not inconvenience others with their own food fads, imho.

      • the original bellaluna says:

Aotearovian – That’s very polite of you, and I bet your friends and family appreciate it greatly!

We tried to accommodate our family members’ “eccentricities” (and I mean no offence by that), but it just became too much, between a diabetic grandma, a brother who decided that he wouldn’t eat ham, and the proclivities of said relatives above.

I hate to say it, but it got to the “we’re making it; eat it, or don’t, or bring your own” point.

  16. Nicolette says:

I love Pink and her music. She looks amazing!

  17. Nan209 says:

I think about working out 7 days a week but my happy @ss only goes once a month. No personal trainer for me and my schedule doesn’t always work with the gyms. Not to mention – f**k, I’m tired!

    • Eileen says:

Me too girl! I just try to play activites with my kids and I keep a lot of stuff in the basement so I have to walk up and down the stairs. lol Hey every little bit counts! 🙂

      • the original bellaluna says:

Eileen – I don’t have a basement (hello! Cali here!) so I just park really, really far away from whatever store/bank/whatever I’m going to.

I also count the endless times a day I have to get up (seriously, like every 30 seconds or less) to tend to Toddles “I NEEDS” as lunges.

        Works for me! 😉

    • Red Starburst says:

im a housewife at the moment with no car so im having such a hard time with the idea of finding new ways to work out because I used to live in the gym and miss my precor eliptical.

      • Umlaut says:

Red, I loved the P90X workout DVDs when I had to work out at home — and my kids loved it, too. Might be worth looking into 🙂

  18. lucy2 says:

The “only 5 days a week now” thing is suspect if she is training with Jillian, because she usually tells people not to overdue it and take time to recover too. (I listen to her podcast, it’s really good).
    Pink looks awesome.

  19. JM says:

I think you are misreading the “only 5 days” comment. I take it to mean she’s only working out now with Jeannette, and not BOTH Jeannette and Jillian.

    Relax, peeps!

  20. mytbean says:

That weight loss and “mostly” veganism is probably also due to her gallbladder surgery. Having a bad gallbladder really jacks with your eating habbits and makes you reconsider everything you put on your plate. I’ve lost 30 lbs because I can’t eat any fat (cooking oils, dairy, meat, etc) and am vegetarian as a result of that experience.

I wish she would have at least mentioned that because I know for certain it’s had an impact… it irks me a little that you can’t see a hint of a scar from it in the cover photo – but then that wouldn’t be very Shape Magaziny to have surgical scars, huh?

  21. Red Starburst says:

I tried the vegan thing for a week and was starving all the time because I’m really picky about vegetables to begin with. I did lose 4 pounds though so it taught me to incorporate less carbs into my diet and eat more vegetables instead.

    • Lisa says:

You have to learn to like veg if you’re going to be vegetarian or vegan. My sister in law… I love her, but she’s the pickiest goddamn vegetarian I’ve ever met! How can you be vegetarian if you don’t like vegetables?! The stuff she’ll pick out of her salad! By the time she’s done, there’s like, one leaf left.

      • Sam says:

I’ve been a vegetarian for a while and, truthfully, I’m not a huge veggie fan! Lots of vegetarians aren’t big veggie eaters! I trend more towards grains, rice, beans and carbs as my staple foods. I have learned to like more veggies, but I’m still picky. But plenty of vegetarian people aren’t actually big veggie eaters.

      • Red Starburst says:

haha she sounds like me. I make my salad with iceberg lettuce, cucumbers and carrots thats it. its a texture thing mostly…anything mushy weirds me out like tomatoes and cooked eggplants.

  22. Lisa says:

Honestly? I’ve always thought she was super gorgeous, and I never understood the hate she got for her body.

  23. Eden says:

I love Pink, always have. She looks fantastic and I love the fact that she gained lots of weight and lost it gradually.

For those who are commenting that if they had a nanny and a trainer, they could do this too. It can be done without. I am a professional mom of 2, a member of various groups and I work out 5 days a week. Those of us who do this are tired too but still manage to spend time with everyone. My son loves to run and bike ride, so he does those exercises with me. My daughter likes to go to the gym, so she does that with me. You can balance it all out, without professional help. Most gyms have day cares cheap as well. Those were a savior when my kids were young. They loved spending the time with new friends and I had them with me without having to worry.

    • Lisa says:

Yep! I go to the gym with my mom and I’m 24. Heh. She does have more time now that she’s retired, but even when she taught, she walked a lot or went to the gym on her own when we were kids.

  24. Juicy Lucy says:

I recently lost 25lbs combining the weight watchers diet and working out using most of Bob Harper and Jillian Michaels workout tapes. I have a full time job and as a part time student, I have no time to work out at a gym with a personal trainer. I congratulate Pink on losing 55lbs gradually. Thus proves she’s no stupid girl.

  25. Jayna says:

Please, that cover was so photoshopped. Watch her new video. She is toned but she is still a little stocky right now, but not flabby or out of shape. Very in shape. She’s very short, so her stockiness shows more unless she’s thinner. That cover thinned her down a bit.

    I still luv her.

  26. Sirsnarksalot says:

Sorry but you don’t get muscle mass as a woman like that being vegan and just working out a lot. I have always suspected that she was juicing and her pot belly (which is airbrushed out for that cover) prove it. It’s the telltale HGH belly that protrudes but is covered with a six pack. Look at lifelong body builders, they all have it. Its her body to do with what she wants but it’s really disingenuous to claim her figure is the product of diet and exercise.

    • ZigZagZoey says:

Thank you! Yikes, I think she is INCREDIBLY MANLY!!!
I do like her personality, but I don’t really care for her music much.

    • busy ramone says:

You have no idea what you are talking about. There are many athletes that are vegan including the man who created the Vega workout supplement line who also happened to be an ironman triathlete.

      • Sirsnarksalot says:

I actually do know what I am talking about. I have friends who are body builders here and ones who live in the UK where these substances are not illegal and their dr designs their “cycles” for them. I know quite a bit about it.

  27. Jag says:

I think she looks great. But she can’t call herself vegan if she eats real cheesecake because it has milk and eggs in it. Vegans don’t eat anything that comes from animals at all. She more accurately would be an ovo-lacto vegetarian. Still a great inspiration.

  28. marie says:

    she’s awesome.. that’s all I got

  29. BangBang says:

You guys just like her bc your boyfriend would’t f her lol…….her music and fan badassery is hilarious, in a bad way

  30. Violet says:

I think Pink is awesome, but I wish she’d blocked Shape from photoshopping the cover because a) it doesn’t need airbrushing and b) women come in all shapes and sizes, and most of us have some scars and stretch marks AND THAT’S OKAY.

  31. Happy21 says:

I love that she looks athletic and not too thin. She gets her body by working hard which she actually enjoys. You see photos of her out and about and she’s always being active. I think for her it’s just a part of life.

    I love her 🙂

  32. Patrice says:

I too was irritated by the “Only sees Jeanette 5 days a week” now thing at first until I realized that they probably meant that she’s just no longer seeing Michaels as well.

In truth, what irritated me more was the “mostly vegan diet” quote. As I or any other vegan can tell you, this lifestyle takes serious commitment and dedication (I mean, who hasn’t at least once gotten the ocassional longing for an old favorite?) but it’s the not ever actually giving in and eating the eggs/meat/dairy or whatever that makes you dietarily vegan; it’s the strict adherence to it. You can’t eat animal products “on occasion” and “mostly” be one! That’s so cray 😀 I do know that Pink has been meat-free for many years so if she’s eating eggs, cheese and or milk even once in a while that would simply mean she’s a vegetarian. That’s why I don’t think she dropped that ‘mostly vegan’ line herself; it probably came from the reporter…

    • Pamela says:

She said that she cooks “mostly vegan” meals for the family. To me, that means that most of their meals are vegan. I understand your point–but I think there is a difference between calling yourself mostly vegan (while eating some animal products” and saying your meals are “mostly vegan”. You could eat steak 3 times a week–and have 18 vegan meals–and it would be true to say you eat mistly vegan meals—but would be silly to call yourself mostly vegan.

  33. Tania says:

I seriously LOVE her. I’ve never been to one of her concerts but I imagine (with her actual talent) that she would be amazing!

    • the original bellaluna says:

I saw a concert of hers in Australia (Funhouse) on Palladia, and if you get it, you should watch. She’s AWESOME! Even Toddles loves it!

  34. the original bellaluna says:

I don’t care what she looks like or how much she weighs, I LOVE Pink! I am SO happy she and Corey worked it out and had their little girl!

I also happen to love couscous and asparagus.

  35. BooBooLaRue says:

Ditto. She will never be taller or more slender, but her body is rockn’ for what she was given.

  36. OlyBinewski says:

God, I *LOVE* her legs in the photo where she’s wearing the “pop” shirt/dress. It’s obvious she got in good shape through eating well and working hard.

I’ve always had a soft spot for her music. It’s a guilty pleasure of mine.

  37. dj says:

I have always loved Pink! She is authentic. Love, love, love her little sweet family. Very positive role model.

  38. themummy says:

I have to say this. As a vegan. Mostly vegan and vegan are NOT the same. You are vegan or not. Period. It’s fine to be mostly vegan, but not to be mostly vegan and say you’re vegan. Other than that, I have such a girl crush on Pink. I adore her.

  39. Gigohead says:

Pink looks great and I’m glad she took her time getting back her body in due time and not a week after having her baby like some celebrities. It takes time!

  40. B says:

I must be the only person that doesn’t go all gaga for Pink. I don’t dislike her, but I can’t say that I’ve ever cared for her music.

I guess I just fail to see what’s so swoon-worthy about her.
