Duchess Kate in Alice by Temperley in London: too fussy or girlish & pretty?

Here are some photos of Duchess Kate at a Buckingham Palace reception for Olympic and Paralympic medalists yesterday. I’m looking through the photos… and I think only medalists were invited. If you were a member of Team GB and you didn’t get a medal, you did not get to meet Duchess Kate and the Queen. Kate wore ALICE by Temperley for the reception, and I really dislike it. I find all of the extra stuff, the cream detailing on the sleeves and the dust ruffle on the bottom… it’s too much. It’s too fussy and cutesy for my taste.

Nearly two years out from Kate’s engagement announcement to William, we’re getting a clearly idea of what Kate’s fashion is and what it will be in the years to come. Did you predict what we’ve seen so far? I didn’t, honestly. Before her engagement, Kate’s style was a lot more youthful, and she loved clingy little silk jersey dresses. In some ways, her pre-royal family was more tomboy-ish too, as she definitely wore more jeans and low-heeled boots, more structured jackets and the like. Now that she’s a duchess, her style has become so much more girlish. She loves this “fussy” stuff now. She loves lace and flower appliques and pleated details and lots and lots of buttons. Hopefully, she’ll evolve past this, maybe?

Would you like to Bump Watch her? I don’t see any evidence that she’s pregnant right now, but it’s possible. Most people think that she and William have started “trying” now that their Epic Asian Tour is over (it was over in mid-September). Baby announcement for Christmas? That would be exciting!

PS… Her shoes are Jimmy Choo Cosmic pumps.

Dress is pretty, but it doesn’t flatter her I’m afraid.

  2. birdie says:

Ugly dress, boring hair. Maybe she will get it right next time.

  3. ds says:

Dress is horrible. Looks like she’s going to a Balkan wedding.

    • HoustonGrl says:

      Hahaha!

    • oia says:

      A classy comment…

    • balkanbabe says:

At first I was offended by that comment – what exactly is wrong with dressing for a Balkan wedding?

But on second look at the dress, I would have to agree. Balkan weddings are very fun and festive, so I see how the dress doesn’t look right on skinny-lipped, uptight WASP.

      • oia says:

You are a bigger person than I am : ) It is a fugly dress, and I think the gist was how old-fashioned, unsophisticated she looks, and by extension, the Balkan weddings, which is an impression from movies, i.e. the Balkan mafia, village culture, certain war movies… Earlier in some other article today there was a comment about someone dressed up like a clown for a Ukrainian picnic, whatever that is, derivatively, of course, which does give me the impression that Celebitchy commenters are bigoted and racist, because they are making fun of peoples & cultures they mostly know nothing about, wheres the use of the “N” word and similar racially coloured language is rightly criticised – but, this is home, and that is…whatever the hell that is.

Also, these same commenters comment on, for instance, The Game of Thrones, whose Kings Landing parts are filmed in Dubrovnik, which is also in the Balkans, or various celebrities, Beyonce and many others, visiting the Croatian or Montenegro coast (Montenegro style, anyone?), also in the Balkans, very positively, some would like to visit – they better not be invited to weddings, though…

I also read here because of light celebrity snark – it’s just unpleasantly surprising when someone makes fun of your home like it doesn’t matter and is not ignorance & racism. Which it is.

    • videli says:

DS: And yet you’re never going to have more crazy fun than at a Balkan wedding. Anybody, if you’re ever in the Balkans, get yourselves invited to a wedding, preferably in the countryside! Lots of ritual, and dancing, and rivers of booze!

      • Ally8 says:

Agree! Not as pretty or ornate as Balkan traditional costumes.

No, it looks like someone practiced their craft store cake decoration skills on her dress. And the sleeves are just too darn twee for her.

    • Kaligula says:

Lol funny. I used to live in the Balkans and have family and roots there. I actually love the dress and think she looks gorgeous– as always, IMO. But still that comment rings true and is funny as he** to me.

  4. Kiki says:

I think she dresses like an older lady, with that body, I’d do wonders!

    • bej says:

I know right! The chance to dress that body (if it were your own) would be so exciting in terms of the possibilities to really bring it. Being a Duchess, with all the etiquette that title/role brings seems to mean you have to dress much older than you are. Like you’re stuck being an old lady from day dot. Definitely no ‘sexy’ allowed 🙁

  5. marie says:

I think it’s cute, but the ruffle around the elbow would annoy me.

    • RobN says:

Yeah, I actually like the body of the dress, but the ruffle would make me crazy.

    • Jackson says:

Yes, exactly. I’m fine with it over all, but it would look so much better if that elbow flounce were removed.

    • gogoGorilla says:

      +1

I’m also not a huge fan of the tiering along the bottom. But I like the illusion neckline and think the length is good for her.

(Also: she has AWESOME calves. I work out all the time but my calves will always be puny – it’s genetic. Sigh.)

    • Kitty2000 says:

Agreed, I would lose the ruffles around the sleeve AND that godawful pussycat bow around her waist. Too too much detailing.

    • Sweettart says:

I like the dress. The thing that I don’t care for is the bow in the front.

  6. Sia says:

Judging from those grey roots, she has to be pregnant. She visits her hairstylist about every other day, so which other explanation could there be?

    • LAK says:

Actually since she got married (not so evident pre-wedding), her natural hair colour grows out grey. It’s shocking that is what the stress is doing to her. The Palace released a statement about it as the reason she was cutting back work after her 6wks when William was in the Falklands. At the time it seemed such a stupid and unnecessary excuse to give but it really is true.

If you look back to pictures over the past year where she has some uncoloured growth, it’s got a lot of grey in it.

      • Sia says:

You are right, I just saw other pictures with her hair growing out all grey…
If she is that stressed out by her new life, she may not be able to conceive at all….so probably not pregnant.
I have a question for you: if she will never “conceive the heir”, what would be the consequences?

      • ya says:

could just be her age…. I had hardly any gray hair last year but turned 30 this year like Kate and now the grays are popping up like crazy.

      • LAK says:

@Sia – In official capacity, assuming she remains married to William for his entire life (no official separation) and she doesn’t conceive, no consequences. She’ll still be Queen Consort. The throne will simply pass to Harry (if he outlives William) and his descendants. That’s how throne was passed to Victoria.

The most important person here is William. Throne can only pass via him through legitimate marriage. No one illegitimate or adopted can inherit the throne.

Now of course on a personal level, if Kate is unable to conceive, it’s a matter for them what they decide to do ie adopt, carry on childless or divorce.

It should be interesting, constitutionally, if surrogates are used because of course inheritance laws don’t always keep up with advances in society. One thing is super clear though, that if a surrogate is used, baby must be the genetic off spring of William AND Kate (or another legitimate wife) can’t use donor eggs/sperm. Resulting child wouldn’t inherit the throne.

      • Sia says:

@Lak: Thank you very much for that answer.
Of course that has to put incredible stress on her as well, since her years to conceive are probably limited to the next 7 years, +/- 3 years, whereas William could pretty much get children his entire life (unless there´s the problem).

      • Sia says:

@ya: Yes, I think it is mostly due to genetics when you turn grey yet it looks as if almost all her hair is already grey and that really could be stress related.
But who knows? Some people start at 20, others well into their 40s.

      • Kellie says:

I noticed her hair a while back. It really does grow grey directly from her scalp. Not even in sections, like her entire head would be grey if she didnt have it colored. Ive never seen anything like it and at first I felt sorry for her because I cant imagine the stress and pressure, but then I reminded myself that she coveted this role for a decade prior to achieving her goal. So there you have it.

You want it all, you get everything that comes with it including a head full grey like a 90 year old.

      • Esmom says:

@Kellie, a full head of gray doesn’t necessarily make one look ancient — see Anderson Cooper. But I’d think it would be too bold of a move for Kate to go gray at this age.

      • LAK says:

@Ya/@Sia – despite genetic inheritance, stress and or trauma can make a person grey, seemingly overnight. Barbara Bush said she went grey overnight due to some trauma [can’t remember what it was and am too lazy to google]. Look at Presidents and Prime Ministers. They are all bouncy, healthy and shiny on election day and within months are sprouting serious grey. The stress of the job does that to you.

      • bluhare says:

Obviously, with my name I’m a bit biased on the grey hair thing. I was prematurely grey as Kate is, and coloured my hair until my late 30’s. Then I quit and my hair is now totally white. It’s my signature, and while I can’t lie about my age it isn’t necessarily aging.

      • LAK says:

@Bluhare – where have you been? detailed answers on an email please!!! 🙂

      • annie says:

I’m not sure that this is true. I think her natural colour is a mousey brown, which looks grey compared to the warmer brown she colours it. I have similar colouring so I am familiar with this issue.

      • LAK says:

@Annie – her natural colour is dark brown.

look at these pictures of her younger self especially the ones upto 2001 before any make overs and no hair dye.

        http://www.wellsphere.com/skin-beauty-article/for-kate-middleton-8217-s-birthday-a-look-back-at-her-younger-style/1324257

      • bluhare says:

LAK: If you see this (it’s late now) I emailed you yesterday. Did you not receive it?

        Sorry for the hijack everyone.

  7. Rikki says:

She needs to reinvent her look. How about a new haircut or something? She always looks the same.

    • happycats says:

I don’t think she can reinvent her look – there’s some idea in the BRF that you need to pick a “look” when you’re young and stick to it until you’re dead. It’s the “remind the people no matter what changes in the world you [queen, duchess, etc.] don’t change and remain steadfast”.
The Queen has never changed her hairstyle/style in general nor has Princess Anne, Camilla, etc. I think there’s a rule so this is the Kate we will always have I suspect!

      • Alexandra Bananarama says:

Stop referencing the Queen to defend or justify DK. The Queen has so much she’s worked hard for and fought through in her life if she shaved her head she would still be respected

I’m no fan of Kate, so i’ll keep my opinion down to facts. The dress could be worse, but it’s still bad for the event. Her heels are too damn high! She’s already a very tall woman and most of the guests look short. The only reason to wear those kinds of heels I can think of is to show off her calves. Why is she so afraid of her grey hairs? If the colors are sparse enough it might improve her image to the public.

  8. jenna says:

Would be a lot cuter if the top part was just solid black and the elbow ruffle was removed. Maybe then some cream piping at the neck and sleeve hem, but that would be it. Right now it looks like the top half of the detailing is not even really part of the dress!

  9. Lee says:

I think I would have liked it had there not been a sash and bow at the waist.

  10. silken_floss says:

Her dress is perfect. So kitschy!

  11. effy says:

Cute little lady in the last pic.

  12. Murphy says:

No pictures of the QUEEN!? wtf

  13. teehee says:

I just cant like anything abotu her ‘fashion’. I only complain because I truly miss the magic of Dianas appearances. Its a bummer I have only the old picture books to get inspiration from and not someone mking news today.

    • ANGELIC 20 says:

i agree, as much as i don’t want to compare them i just can’t help but think what a disappointment diana’s successor has been in every possible way even with all the advantages that she got. everyone defend her lack of fashion sense on her position, well diana wore some really stylish , colorful, amazing clothes while carrying out her engagements . kate is not stylish , like in this dress her bra or slip’s strap is showing and she was wearing 6 inches heels even when she knew that there will be para Olympians in wheelchairs etc.

  14. bella says:

    F.I.N.A.L.L.Y.
she’s wearing a dress with personality. it’s the 1st time i’ve liked anything she’s worn!
the dress is gitchy, sweet and unique!
NOW…she needs to do something about that awful hair style.

    • flourpot says:

Totally agree, Bella. She looks fab. I love that dress, ruffles and all, and she’s rocking it.

  15. Meg says:

The dress is fugly. Maybe she’s put on weight her face looks a little fuller/better. I do like the shoes, although they are plain (at least they aren’t the nude LK’s!!)

In the first picture you can see how huge her hair is compared to the blonde woman who has more “normal” looking hair LOL

  16. Sachi says:

She’s not petite and dainty for this kind of dress. The dress would be better on someone with a smaller body frame because those flowers, ruffles, etc are just too cutesy.

Kate almost looks too “big” and masculine in the dress.

The overall look would have been better with a good hairstyle, better makeup, yadda yadda yadda…it’s getting redundant now because Kate looks so boring and nothing changes with her look. She always looks the same. She can’t help that she has no charisma and personality, IMO, but she can do so much better.

She looks good in structured outfits with clean, sleek lines.

The dress itself looks cheap and ugly. Only someone with real style and elegance can work that dress.

  17. The Original Mia says:

Been waiting all night for this post. Ugly, fussy, dated dress. She’s 30. Not 3

  18. Holly says:

I like the dress on her.

  19. Linda says:

I love this dress except for the weird bow, but other than that I think its very 60s esque.

  20. bettyrose says:

In another color I would hate it, but in black and with those shoes, love.it.

  21. Lilix40 says:

Dear Lord, what a boring look! It just looks like something Kate stole from Camilla’s closet and threw on – after proper fitting, of course.

  22. Sachi says:

    I just remembered…William wasn’t there.

So did Kate have to curtsy to almost every royal woman in the room save for Sophie Wessex?

Bea and Eugenie were also there, and we all know by now that Kate has to show them respect when William isn’t around.

I wonder how it went down.

    • The Original Mia says:

That’s the money shot I wanted to see. Not pictures upon pictures of Duchess Waity in that ridiculously juvenile dress.

    • LAK says:

      I forgot that too.

Oh to be a fly on the wall in the room they all gather in before joining the reception to see her curtseying to all the ladies.

    • pomela says:

Actually if you see more photos Prince Edward was there and outranked Kate and Sophie being married to Pr.Edward when William is not there,Sophie actually outranks Kate at this occasion, since Sophie is married to the Queen’s son and when Kate is alone, she is of lesser rank being married to the Queen’s Grandson even though he is the heir. Sophie actually had higher rank than Kate at this event because Pr.Edward was with her and he outranks Kate, when she is alone, without William, but the press would never admit that, but it’s totally true.
I feel Kate is embarrassed by the nude photos still and she’s trying to dress a bit dowdy. What’s going on with her face, odd puffiness, she’s very average looking, never got the hype.

  23. LAK says:

I can’t believe this dress is custom made. It’s by Temperley but specifically made for Kate.

Temperley for Kate/Pippa is rapidly turning into Marchesa for everyone else.

This dress has no redeeming quality. It should not be visited on anyone. It’s fugly beyond words.

    Do love her shoes though.

  24. Melissa says:

I like her bracelet a lot. The dress is a little too much – they should have toned down the cream accents, especially at the bottom of the dress. Maybe just some slight accent work at the bottom?

  25. HoustonGrl says:

It seems that Kate is required to wear sleeves. So in order to get around that, almost everything she wears is a strapless dress with seethrough overlay, and temperley is her go-to designer for these weird concoctions. The dress is so, so, so depressing. Is she in mourning?

  26. Apples says:

I loathe that dress, but, it’s by a major British designer that often doesn’t hit me. So I’ll just assume it’s a cultural thing and I don’t get it. I applaud her for supporting British designers.

We are no longer living in the excess of the 80’s which is when Diana had her “fashion glory” years. Now people know exactly what you are wearing, how much it costs, and compare that to the state of the world economy. Now everything she wears and does becomes political. I feel Kate is doing a wonderful job trying to recycle clothes and wear cheaper options (LK Bennett shoes).

I get annoyed that people want to tear down this most innocuous person. Why?! Kate is so adorable and sweet- she makes me happy.

  27. Hope says:

What, no comment on the lack of sausage curls? You have to give the girl credit where credit is due! Good on you, Kate. You actually look like a woman in her thirties!

  28. Sway says:

    I’ve always liked her smile.

  29. KellyinSeattle says:

I kind of like the dress…her legs are in great shape…

    • j.eyre says:

I like it too. I would prefer it with a straight 3/4 sleeve but I can allow the ruffle. At first I thought maybe the cream was too much but the more I look at it, I think it works – especially on the top. The bracelet is perfectly paired with it.

  30. Jaded says:

That dress is atrocious and with her heavy hair she looks like a Barbie Doll wannabe.

She’d look so much better if she took about 6 inches off the sausage curls and had it layered around her face. It just pulls her look down as it is.

    • Esmom says:

Yes that hair is seriously dragging her down, style-wise.

And don’t even get me started on the eyeliner. It makes me twitch.

  31. cucumber says:

This is the first time I see Kate with ugly dress. The dress is just horrendous beyond words.
I love her, and I think she has a genuine pretty face.

It’s just her first mistake, next time it will be okay.

  32. daisydoodle says:

For god’s sake, get pregnant already! Isn’t that what she’s supposed to do? I feel bad if it’s a infertility problem, but, come on…procreate already!

    • Alexandra Bananarama says:

It might be a fertility issue for several reasons.
William could be shooting a low sperm count.
She isn’t ovulating long enough or at all.
Or my personal theory, her years of alleged smoking and how quickly she dropped weight with seemingly only diet/cardio (no resistance training) has thrown her body into starvation panic.

I doubt she’s stopped smoking and that could also hinder her chances. She would have put weight on if she stopped. 10/15 lbs i would think.

      • daisydoodle says:

Plus, and ladies (and gentlemen) don’t hate, but she’s no spring chicken, like Diana, and pregnancy just doesn’t happen as quickly…

  33. Elly says:

    it´s an ugly dress.

    wrong composition:
    sleeves = ugly
    flower-hem = ugly
    a dust ruffle? = ugly
    see-through (upper part) = ugly

it´s too much… too much wrong parts.

P.S. she wears High Heels for a meeting with paralympians? After all she is tall enough, or?

  34. lower-case deb says:

if only she would just do away with the elbow valance.

  35. Reece says:

At first glance I liked it. I thought sheer top, matching print on the bottom, pretty. Upon closer inspection it’s another sheer overlay and sheath dress. *eye roll @ Temperley* Trite!

That said maybe it would be better on somebody who wears their clothes and isn’t a walking hanger. Something nice- She’s worn worse.

  36. shewolf says:

I dont know why but I love her. If I saw the dress on a rack in the store Id call it fug but when its on her Im like “Oh look there’s the duchess!”

  37. Jill says:

The guy on the crutches is like…let me see your lopsided boobs. lol

  38. Denver Danni says:

We know what her figure looks like, I think this dress is pretty and whimsical in an age appropriate, not in a gross-my-shiz-out Taylor Swift way,

  39. Ursula says:

I don’t mind the dress… but the HAIR. Such a pretty face and her hairstyle does nothing for her. She looks so much better when her hair is up and away from her face. Those huge curls at the end are so boring!

    • Alexandra Bananarama says:

She looks so good and age appropriate with her hair out of her face. The difference is amazing.
However, it will be a very long time until her signature sausage curls go away, but when they do we will all cheer and praise her. Doves will be released at the unveiling and the country will rejoice.

Is this what that an accomplishment in the RF has been reduced to. Not screwing up and learning to dress and style yourself in an age appropriate way?

  40. Nymeria says:

Ah, okay. Kate’s *that* kind of geisha. Got it.

  41. Mrs.Krabapple says:

That dress is hideous. And her hair looks damaged from over-working it. And she’s STILL piling on the heavy pancake makeup. She and the rest of the family are boring and old. Can’t the tabs start reporting on other European royalty instead of the Brits?

Oh, and are those the paralympic athletes she missed watching when she and William skipped out of the games to go on vacation in France? For William and Kate, I think I’ll add “lazy” and “self-entitled” to the “boring and old” description.

Boring, old, lazy, self-entitled William and Kate. Yep, time to find new royalty to cover, because this couple isn’t even fashionable, interesting, or likeable enough to entertain my grandmother.

  42. L says:

She just can’t win can she? If it doesn’t have bell and whistles it’s ‘boring and old lady’ and when she finally steps out of the box it’s ‘hideous and ugly’ Some folks just never seem to be pleased with anything.

That all being said, I agree about the hair. She needs to have it be about 3-4 inches shorter.

    • Mrs.Krabapple says:

Kate could “win” if she actually wore classy and fashionable clothing. She just doesn’t have it in her.

As an example, here’s Carolyn Bessette Kennedy (American “royalty”) in 1999:

      http://tinyurl.com/988zgwq

Carolyn’s beauty was understated, not crass (no heavy pancake make-up, fake tans, or Sharpie-pen eyeliner), and her fashion timeless.

If Kate doesn’t have any fashion sense (and she doesn’t) she either needs to STOP TRYING and focus on being a hard-working royal like Anne or the Queen, or an empathetic caring person like Diana. But no, all she ever tried to impress the public with was her looks. SHE chose to be a barbie doll instead of a hard-working or caring royal. And she is failing at it. Time to switch gears. Or, hire a stylist who really does know fashion. William can afford it.

      • LAK says:

oh Mrs Krabapple – i think you and i and a few 90s/80s kids will cry for the lost potential of CBK, fashion wise.

I don’t think there was anything she wore that i didn’t like, and it was stylish and conservative.

And i was a mini skirted punk kid so you can imagine my constant surprise at loving her look and polish.

        http://carolynbessette.tumblr.com/

        http://luxirare.com/a-cbk-fall/

i think this generation have been brought up to think that looking stylish, put together, appropriate means lacquering oneself with make up/nails, hair extensions, stripper heels. Appropriate clothing means 2 inches above the knee, tailoring is something to do with swifty, and if you disagree you are a hater and a bully.

      • Angelic 20 says:

        LAK
I also love cbk ‘s style but never understood the obsession with her.o think she was America’s waity in the sense people were not really interested in her personally or she was very interesting but in jfk junior’s wife and the hope of getting next Jackie o.

      • LAK says:

@Angelic 20 – i think people don’t get the contribution CBK made to fashion. She was/is a style icon. And for someone whose only value in the world was arm candy, she did very well.

I don’t judge her on personality or the stories written about her. She never gave interviews so we don’t know any different apart from what a few people have said.

She never sold herself as a ‘personality’ or ‘charitable or anything substantial, but she wasn’t an airhead either. She didn’t sit at home and wait for her prince to come even when she had met him. And she certainly refused to play the media game after her wedding which i suppose made her rare appearances even more of a frenzy.

MAny people have said she was a coke fiend and that made her unbearac
ble to be around, but no one knows that for sure. It’s all tabloid speculation. None of the reliable biographers like JFK jr’s secretary at GEORGE has substantiated that rumour.

In terms of Waity comparisons, they both married Golden Princes, and both a purely arm candy. That is where any similarities end. the difference is CBK hit the arm candy ground running where as Waity is still struggling.

We can substantiate CBK’s work ethic, even though she chose not to work after the marriage.

      • Esmom says:

I found CBK fascinating and beautiful. @LAK, the shot of her in the camel skirt has always been my favorite. That or the leopard coat one.

Interestingly, her look that she was known for was a drastic reinvention. Prior to her life in the spotlight, her hair was big and uber-styled and her makeup much heavier.

Regardless, she had a huge influence on American style without a doubt. I’d say she singlehandedly started a few major trends.

      • LAK says:

@Esmon – i agree. So many trends that we still see today started with her.

And people like GOOP are still referencing her in their style.

    • L says:

Honestly, I get tired of folks comparing Kate M to dead people. Those women has been practically canonized since they tragically passed.

Plenty of people had criticisms for Diana when she was alive. I remember when CBK was alive and there were plenty of people/tabs that HATED her. They were constantly bagging on her clothes as being boring/WASPy/to expensive/etc. It wasn’t until after she passed that the new story of being a fashion icon was written.

Like I said, Kate can’t win. It’s either boring, to flashy, not classy, doesn’t look like diana/grace/cbk, or is over emulating diana/grace/cbk.

  43. Angelic 20 says:

Oh don’t use the word accomplishment, it scares the crap out of rf and William and even without opening her mouth she had done numerous screw ups but tabloids like to look the other way and fool the plebs by portraying her as the most prefect woman to walk on earth who deserves to bee loved, admired and looked up to.

  44. INeedANap says:

She looks so…hard and shellacked, like the commemorative statue of herself. Girl needs a joint or something.

  45. Elena says:

I like the dress (without the flower appliques).

I like Kate’s style in general, I guess it’s the way it’s supposed to be. Can’t say many negative things. 30 is an age that allows one to wear a wide range of clothes and be appropriate. (I’m in no way saying people much under or over 30 can’t successfully do the same.)

  46. LeslieM says:

    Beautiful dress! She looks great!

  47. Mrs.Krabapple says:

Is her forehead betting bigger? Somebody better tell her to eat a sandwich. Receding hairline in women is one of the signs of malnutrition.

  48. Christina says:

    Fugly dress.

I know the usual line is that Kate’s ‘status’ means that she can’t be too experimental with her fashions. Fair enough – she’s not going to wear the latest Versace to a palace event. But that doesn’t mean she has to look so damn boring. Look at Princess Mary of Denmark, for example. She’s in the same ‘position’ as Kate – they’re both Crown Princesses – but despite the fact that Mary is about a decade older than Kate, she manages to look both conservative and stylish at the same time. Same with Diana back in the day.

    Kate is just drab.

  49. Amelia says:

I’m cracking up at the armchair doctors here who know that the duchess is still smoking, malnourished, starving herself, etc.
As for those comparisons to Carolyn Kennedy, do some research…that woman was severely troubled. And while she had great style and did not pile on makeup, jewelry, etc., she bleached and straightened the hell out of her naturally wavy brown hair and dieted herself to extreme thinness.

This dress isn’t the most flattering, but it’s ok. I agree a hair change would brighten the duchess up. But come on, folks, ease up.

    • ANGELIC 20 says:

i know nothing about cbk’s life other then her style and she always looked skinny to me or at least all the pictures i have seen of her , so i like her style . i know a hell lot more about kate and from what i have seen in the last 11 years ,i simply don’t like her .

    • LAK says:

We aren’t comparing personalities here. we are talking style. CBK had it in buckets. CBK being a bottle blonde is irrelevant. Diana was also a bottle blonde as is majority of famous ‘blonde’ beauties or stylish people. Being crazy is no barr to style and star power – look at Marilyn.

And during her own lifetime after she married JFK jr, everyone was copying her style which is why many people had that super ironed look in the late 90s for example. Gwyneth Paltrow is still channelling CBK’s entire look and is regularly on best dressed lists. And CBK despite being skinny was never as skinny as the size zero you see these days.

Now of course if we are going to discuss personalities and circumstances, i am aware that CBK was allegedly a hot mess who was a coke fiend who wasn’t really into JFK jr, was rumoured to have cheated on him with that hot model and was probably headed down divorce road…but that is entirely different conversation from the one we were having…

    • Esmom says:

I’m well aware of the sordid stories about CBK — I said above that she fascinated me and I have no illusions that she was anywhere near perfect — but that still doesn’t change the fact that her style made a big impact.

She may have something in common with Kate in that she set her sights on her “prince” and dug in her heels until she landed him.

  50. Amy says:

This is one of the few things I have seen that I don’t like on Kate. It just seems so fussy and also way too young for her. This is something I could see on a girl in middle or high school, not on a 30 year old woman.

Also this is maybe minor, but you can clearly see her black bra strap in some of these pictures. I’m sure she can afford to wear a bandeau/strapless bra!

  51. whisper says:

Carolyn Kennedy was a mess half the time and looked like Madonna with a stretched face – most unfortunate if you ask me.
Waity annoys the heck out of me, but the press make it so much worse by focussing on her so prominently in every story. If they treated her as just one of the younger generation and as the least important member of the Firm in any royal gathering, that would help to put her in her place. The media seem determined to ram her down our throats so we can’t avoid scrutinising her and noticing how inadequate and unsuitable she is. Maybe that’s the idea.

  52. Loulou says:

The dress is appropriate but I’m sick of the curtain hair.

  53. charlie says:

Doesn’t anyone — including Kaiser — see the irony of Waity schmoozing with these Paralympians NOW, almost months after she skipped out of most of the Paralympic events to go on yet another vacation and sunbathe nude for all the world to see and photograph? How can she hold her head up with any kind of dignity? She should be ashamed and embarrassed to be in these worthy people’s presence after the scandal of her avoiding most of the Paralympic games for another vacation.

    • Esmom says:

Oh yeah, I’d forgotten about that. Yikes.

    • Angelic 20 says:

oh I know that but I am just so tiered of criticizing her, then be called hater or jealous or whatever and then again defend my opinion and get into this never ending argument. She hardly spend any energy on her engagements so I have decided she is not worth my energy. She is s set in her ways and I do not expect her to change or improve.

    • Angelic 20 says:

    • Sachi says:

Most people cared more about her nude photos and shouting, “Poor Princess Kate! So embarrassing for her! The inhumanity of it all! Heads will roll! How dare they do this to the delicate creature after what they did to Diana??!! Waahhh, nobody should have their privacy invaded like this! She’s a beautiful, strong woman to be walking around naked like that. She should have the right to privacy to do whatever she wants! She’s a royal, she’s special and deserves our respect!!! More power to her! Go Kate!”

Their absence at the Paralympics was completely forgotten and nobody but the “jealous haters-critics” ever bring it up.

Instead of asking what the hell William and Kate were doing in France in the first place, most people were outraged on Kate’s behalf.

Her sycophants were angrier about Kate’s topless photos and she and William being shown to be on another holiday rather than paying attention to the fact that she and William lied to the public when they said they couldn’t attend the Paralympics because they were “busy” preparing for their Asia tour.

I guess they meant they were busy getting their tan.

      • charlie says:

Sachi, I for one will never forget that Waity skipped out on the Paralympics. Perhaps that’s because I predicted it back in June. I just knew she and Willy would deem the Paralympics and Paralympians boring and of lesser value to their precious time and PR exposure. I love how the nudiegate scandal blew up in their faces — their absence and their laziness and their self-indulgent vacations on display for everyone to see, when they should have been “ambassadors” to physically challenged people. Perfect karma. It was the beginning of the end for me with those two. I’ll never view them the same, and I hope it is never forgotten.

I’ve said it before: I couldn’t care less about the nudity. It was the lies and the skipping out of duties — with handicapped people, no less — that made me so angry. And I still am. Or maybe disgusted is a better word.

      • Sachi says:

charlie – I agree with you. The public’s goodwill is continuously decreasing for these two with every little thing that piles up to paint them as selfish, spoiled, and oblivious.

Wasn’t there a report that they’re planning another holiday in November as a “reward” for their successful Asia tour?

William and Kate have no shame. They’ll continue flaunting their laziness and entitlement in the public’s face. And then they’ll cry foul (esp. William) whenever the media goes in on them and exposes their lies. They’re ridiculous.

This is the future, this is the face of modern monarchy in England.

        Yuck.

I’d rather have Harry or Bea as King/Queen.

    • GoodCapon says:

      +10000000

  54. cc says:

Seriously, did she got tattoos in her eyes that resemble dark eyeliner? She’s always wearing the damn thing! Jesus Christ.

    • Esmom says:

I have said this in almost every Waity post — I think the eyeliner is tattooed on. Seriously there has never been a shot of her without it, even when she’s taking part in athletic events. I wish someone would prove me wrong!

  55. charlie says:

Somebody else made an excellent point. Why why why is Waity wearing 5 or 6″ heels when she is talking to “little people” and people in wheelchairs? Why? What is wrong with her? Doesn’t she have at least one brain cell in her head? All I can conclude is vanity. Her vanity rules her. Her appearance is far, far more important to her than the people she is talking to.

    • flower says:

Vanity and just plain thoughtlessness, the actions of someone who doesn’t really have a thought about anyone but her self.

  56. The Original Tiffany says:

I don’t love this look at all. The shoes are the only nice thing.

The hair has got to go or do something with it!

  57. alons-y alonso says:

love the Choos but i hate the dress. It’s a bit…matronly?

  58. tmbg says:

I’d kill for those calves! As someone mentioned above, I also have puny, shapeless calves. How does one build those muscles? No matter what I’ve done in the past, the calves stay chicken leggish. 🙁

Anyhow, she’s a beautiful woman and I wish she’d hire me as her wardrobe person. I could come up with some really great ideas for dresses she’d rock.

  59. A Fan says:

I love it! It’s appropriate AND interesting. She looks great.

  60. DianeP says:

Is this my favourite outfit of hers? No – but, Duchess Kate would look good in just about anything. I guess she will always be compared, unfairly, to Princess Diana, who was truly one of a kind. Kate is lovely in so many ways, and has really done a spectacular job so far as the future Queen of England…give her a chance!

    • charlie says:

Diane, I’m through with giving her chances. She’s had ten years to learn and prove herself. Instead, she continues to make misstep after misstep in her behaviour, her speech, her clothes and appearance, her actions. No more chances.

Tell me honestly, is wearing 6″ heels to greet athletes in wheelchairs doing a “spectacular job”? Is towering above everyone at 6’1″ tall a considerate, thoughtful gesture, showing deference to the medal-winning athletes? Or is it vanity? It screams, “Look at me! Look at my lovely legs, everyone, not at the athletes. They’re nothing compared to me!”

    • GoodCapon says:

Does a ‘spectacular job’ consist of skipping her Paralympic ambassadorial duties to take a vacation in France and be discovered parading around topless and bottomless?

She has been nothing more than a clotheshorse; she gets more headlines for what she wears instead of the charities she took up. The media is partly to blame but the Palace also headed for this route; that ‘dress her up like a Barbie doll’ Kate is the only way to go to endear her to the public. Let’s face it, she has nothing to offer aside from her physical appearance.

  61. Luke says:

I like when she wears pieces with interest instead of the monochromatic royal look. Sadly, this dress is kind of ugly. If it just had the hem detail with a simple top and was paired with a jacket, it could have been something.

The bracelet is gorgeous. I wonder when she’s going to start wearing some of the historic pieces.

  62. Suzie says:

That dress would be better without the flared, bell sleeves which look too milkmaid-ish. Straight to the elbow would have been fine. The dress’s skirt should be plain in front with just the pattern repeated at the back. And I think I would have preferred white shoes. Perhaps Duchess Kate is just experimenting. We probably won’t see that dress on her again.

  63. Hm says:

Eyebrows! She changed her eyebrows! I like ’em. Who cares about eyebrows? I do. 😉

  64. whisper says:

It really is mind boggling how many women out there seem to want to worship her and her goddawful family. Perhaps they just fall for the romantic Cinderella-to-princess fantasy. There’s one woman who always comments on any royal story in the Daily Mail in such sycophantic terms you’d think she was on the payroll (perhaps she is). She even supports Pippa’s book of recycled recipe ideas and has ordered several for Christmas presents. What gets me is that Waity Katy and the Middlebums wouldn’t want to associate with these drooling fans, they’d run a mile and slag them off behind their backs as being hideously common and beneath them/ugly/badly dressed/inappropriate people to consort with (i.e. no titles/money/land/possible advantage in knowing them). How can people adore “famous” people who would so clearly despise them? The Middlebums are social climbing, ruthless snobs and Carole wants to distance herself as far as possible from her origins as one of the little, ordinary people who lived in a council house and worked as a trolley dolly and has a brother called Gary (that’s bad enough – couldn’t he change it to Nigel?) who has tattoos and dodgy connections with drugs and the sex trade.

  65. iseepinkelefants says:

Horrible. And her shoes look like Prada or Gucci. Haven’t seen those Jimmy’s… yet.
