Could Denzel Washington win his third Oscar for his role in ‘Flight’?

Here are some photos of Denzel Washington at last night’s Hollywood premiere of Flight. I’m also including some pics (at the end of the post) of some of the other stars at the premiere. Have you heard the rumors about Denzel and an Oscar campaign? The buzz is really heavy on this film, and it’s come hard and fast. When people were talking about Oscar contenders five months ago, did Denzel even make it on anyone’s list? And yet here we are… with a possible showdown between Denzel for Flight and Daniel Day-Lewis for Lincoln. Two of the most respected actors of all time… one is playing a modern commercial pilot who deals with alcoholism and extraordinary circumstances, and the other is playing an American president who led a divided nation through a Civil War. I honestly just got chills. The Best Actor race is going to be epic this year.

Have you seen the trailer for Flight yet? I swear, I get teary-eyed just watching the trailer, so I think I’ll probably be a mess watching this thing. This is a different kind of character for Denzel – a man struggling with unseen factors, a man dealing with his own demons, a man with devastating flaws. Is it worthy of a third Oscar for Denzel?

Who would you choose, between this and Daniel Day-Lewis? Isn’t that an incredibly tough call? If I’m calling it right now, I’d say Denzel might have a better shot.

In other Denzel news, here are some assorted quotes from some of the press he’s been doing to promote the film. That’s how you can tell he’ll really campaign this awards season – the campaign has already begun.

Denzel on watching his performance in Flight: “It was a tough movie for me to watch. It hurt… It took me a few times to get used to it. Now I want to see it with an audience.”

Playing a flawed man: “The more your family wants to help you, the worse you get. In [Whip’s] case, he was smooth in his mind, he was in denial: ‘I can sniff a little coke, I can smoke a joint, I can knock off this brew, I can hit this Puerto Rican – and fly a plane.’ And he was doing it. So what happens next time?”

Advice he gives to men: “What I know now is what I always tell guys. Do whatever you wife says. I don’t know what to tell a woman when it comes to life advice, but this is great advice for men. I just do what my wife says and life works out great. Being kind in life is a great lesson for everyone— especially in a marriage. So add that to the list.

Scary plane stories: “In real life, I had an incident once when I went down a runway and a bird flew in my engine. I had a few aborted take-offs. Yes, it’s scary. But you can’t worry about what you can’t control, which is another good life lesson.”

[From Life Goes Strong & The Insider]

Thoughts on Denzel’s advice to men? Imagine if a celebrity woman had said, “My advice to ladies is to just do whatever your husband tells you.” But that’s too simplistic, I know. And I don’t even buy that Denzel just does whatever Pauletta tells him. I think Pauletta just lets him do whatever he wants.

More photos… why does Denzel look so grumpy? Why is his suit so oversized? Also pictured: Melissa Leo and Kelly Reilly. Does anyone else think Kelly looks like a young Camilla Parker-Bowles?

Yes he could, but he won’t. It will predictably go to DDL.:(

    • andy says:

Denzel and DDL are both great actors but this is Joaquin’s year.

Please let Joaquin’s crazy ass win.

      • EarthWindFire82 says:

Joaquin is crazy as a bag full of cats…but he IS mighty good in that movie…

      • pfeiffer87 says:

I agree but I think Joaquin will be in the Best Supporting Actor category, I know he was in the trailer a lot but I think the films central character is Philip Seymour Hoffman’s character.

      • ViktoryGin says:

Yeah, but Joaquin kind of shot himself in the foot with his anti-establishment Oscar talk.

      • ViktoryGin says:

I think his advice is fine. Men are encouraged to be self-seeking and narcissitic in relationships by nature, so why not?

  2. KellyinSeattle says:

Okay, Denzel doesn’t look as good to me as he usually does (ducking and running)…even he can look like he’s aging….(ducking and running)….
I want to see both films.

  3. Naye in VA says:

lol. If men took his advice it would save a lot of “I told you so”‘s

  4. Lisa says:

I am really excited for this film, more excited than I’ve been for any movie in a long time. I love the premise, I love Denzel, and I love the director’s other work. I am intrigued to see how it all turns out, what with all the different tensions at play.

I think DDL is going to be tough to beat, the Oscars love historic and bio-pics. Both guys are great actors though.

I saw a trailer for this a while back, and all the plane stuff gave me anxiety, I actually had a nightmare about it that night. I don’t know if I can actually watch the movie, but it does look good.

Side note: Melissa never pulls it together well for the red carpet. I like the other woman’s dress though.

    • Kaitlin says:

I so agree! I’m so afraid of flying and I’m really fighting my desire to watch this movie with the number of xanax I’ll have to take to watch it.

  6. Aubra says:

    DENZEL!!!

If BC doesn’t win for SLPB, then it had better be because Denzel won! He is a STELLAR actor and BC could stand to pay attention!

  7. WTF says:

I love them both. It’s such a tough call… I have to go with Denzel.
And I actually like that his suit is hanging a little. I don’t understand these men that wear their clothes so tight you can see their hearts beating. (yeah I’m talking to you Ryan Reynolds)

    • Aubra says:

“I don’t understand these men that wear their clothes so tight you can see their hearts beating”

      LMAO

  8. Reece says:

I’m going to wait and see the movies. I know sensible, boring.

  9. Tiffany says:

Once I see both I can make that decision. I think they are going to split the awards before the Oscars and it will be a tight race. DDL works less frequently than Denzel but the academy is always up his crawl when he does work.

    Fantastic advice!!! ha ha

Why does he look so different to me – has he gained weight – is his hair different. I would not recognize him unless I was told who he was.

I like the silver dress in the above picture.

    DDL will win the oscar.

  11. V4Real says:

His wifr let’s him do whatever he wants. Really? Then I wosh his wife would let him do me. Haven’t seen either movie but they ate both extradinary actors and well deserving

  12. serena says:

It’s really time for him to win an Oscar 🙂 so I vote Denzel!

  13. Booboocita says:

Hmmmm … I dunno. Daniel Day-Lewis is one of the all-time great actors, but if his Lincoln slips into the sort of lugubrious, self-important pomposity that seems to characterize the performances of a lot of Lincoln impersonators, the movie will be a big fail. It all depends on whether DDL can bring Lincoln to life as a person, rather than an icon of American history. If he can’t, then Denzel for sure. I know Joaquin Phoenix is getting lots of buzz for The Master, but I don’t think he commands the respect that Denzel and DDL do. And let’s face it, half the time, the Oscars are all about politics and “prestige” and not about the performances.

    • V4Real says:

I’m thinking the movie Abe Lincoln the vampier Slayer would be more interesting

    • V4real says:

I’m thinking the movie Abe Lincoln the Vampier Killer would be more interesting

    • the original bellaluna says:

I am LOVING you for your use of “lugubrious” right now!!! (Reminds me of “your lugubriousness” from Hercules. VAY funny!) 😉

As far as DDL, I’ve been off his fan train since There Will Be Blood. Hubs and I rented that mess, and we were like “What the f*ck? THIS is an award-nominated (winning?) movie?!?!?!?!?”

      • Issa says:

Think TWBB isn’t for everyone. Definitely a different movie and understand why some people don’t like it. I love it and its one of my top favorite movies.

  14. Tiffany says:

Random thought. Why has there not been a film with DDL,Denzel, and Meryl. You would think that Hollywood would be chomping at the bit to make that happen. Oh well, there is,always another unnecessary Paranormal Activity movie.

  15. mkyarwood says:

‘Cos he IS grumpy. He’s one of the biggest jerks in the business. He’s also rumored to loathe white people.

  16. Camille says:

The worst thing will be the Best Actress Category because there just isn’t an amazing performance this year and anyone could end up winning for a shitty thing.

  17. j.eyre says:

Definitely an interesting Oscar race this year – can’t wait.

  18. Onyx XV says:

I’m gonna go with Denzel on this. Have you seen the trailer for “Lincoln”?? It looks SUPER snoozy. Not that this correlates with an Oscar win, but Flight will definitely beat Lincoln at the box office.

  19. d says:

dunno whether he truly does listen to his wife, but “Being kind in life is a great lesson for everyone— especially in a marriage” … those are words to live by for sure, and I’d add /relationship to marriage (for the single but in a relationship). So, regardless of what Denzel might be like personally, I think I’d go see his movie. that trailer is great and I think it’s an interesting topic that will generate a lot of discussion and he’d be a good flashpoint for those kinds of discussions. hm. I like DDL, but meh on the movie.
