Celebrities on recession: Diddy sans bling, Jim Carrey doesn’t care

P. Diddy is showing some sensitivity for the rest of us by toning down his bling during the recession. He’s demonstrating a good deal of common sense and respect for his fans and their financial situations, which probably aren’t as luxurious as his own.

Rapper P Diddy is trying to hold back on his over-the-top fashions and dress less flashy – out of respect for his fans.

The Bad Boy For Life star – who recently grounded his private jet due to the increasing cost of gas – says he is going to scale back on his bling until the credit crunch is over.

He says, “Out of respect, I’ve been trying to dress less flashy. It’s one thing to be stylish, it’s another to be over the top. You gotta know when to hold back and not to rub it in.”

[From Showbiz Spy]

That’s also a smart business move. Diddy doesn’t want to risk alienating people. Part of his branding is having a flashy lifestyle that his fans can emulate by buying his clothes, his music, and the items he promotes. Right now that’s really not possible for a lot of people, and he could lose fans if he were walking around sporting diamonds and drinking Ciroc all the time.

Jim Carrey’s response to the credit crisis is less sensitive towards the common man, but certainly honest.

Jim Carrey insists he hasn’t been affected by the credit crunch – because he has plenty of money.

The actor – who stars in new movie Yes Man – says the current economic climate hasn’t affected him at all – as he has so much money he doesn’t know what to do with it all.

He says, “I’m not in a recession.

“I’m doing incredibly well. I don’t know – I just want to be honest, because I am really kicking ass. It’s so wonderful to have money.”

Well… it’s true. I guess there’s no point in saying it’s hard for you too when it isn’t. And acting like he’s dramatically affected by it would just piss off people. Jim could probably have kept the “It’s so wonderful to have money,” comment to himself though. But the man’s been banking $20 million paychecks for the better part of fifteen years. He’s probably going to be fine no matter what. Or find a lot of people camping on his doorstep.

I think its pretty likely Jim Carrey was being sarcastic (even if its true).

man, fuck the government giving bailouts with our money that we’ll just end up having to pay back in taxes. Hollywood could bailout the world!

Obviously this will never happen, but maybe they could start a foundation or charity for displaced families in their hometown or something- ya know, show some sensitivity for fans who have been spending hard-earned money for their unnecessarily HUGE paychecks…

At least Diddy seems to be living in reality (those are words I never thought I’d use to describe someone who changed their name to P.Diddy 8O )

Agree with HEB. Jim was being sarcastic.

Frankly, I don’t really want to know how my favourite celebs are faring during tough times. These people live in a different universe. They just have no idea what the rest of the world is going through. Leaving his rings at home doesn’t make Diddy any more “real” to me.

  5. Victoria says:

Well you’d think Jim Carey would be a little more empathetic/sensative since he was DIRT POOR before the 20 million dollar checks started rolling in. I cant believe he said that. Surley he was joking.

Well, I must say I am impressed with Diddy’s senisitivity. I find his comment very charming.First class attitude.

I feel for Diddy, only flying first class. :( But wasn’t his private jet leased or a time share?

  9. Carena says:

Ditty isn’t being sensitive. As usual, he’s saying whatever he needs to say to promote his “brand” to the fullest and bring in the highest paycheck.

And Jim Carrey is sarcastic 99.9% of the time so I’m sure this is one of those cases.

  10. Jessica says:

I agree Carena, Diddy is not sensitive. From what he said it sounds like he pity’s the rest of us. But whatever. If Jim Carey used to be dirt poor then I can see why he would say what he said… Cos he’s rapped!
It didn’t sound all that sarcastic to me…

I have no clue how much P.Diddy gives to charity. He might be a fine philanthropist for all I know…but it’s more than a bit nauseous to hear him praised for “leaving his bling at home so as not to agitate the poor folks.”

I mean. Am I the only person who finds that condescending? I can handle the sight of other people’s finery, thank you.

  12. geronimo says:

@Aspen – no, you’re not alone. How self-absorbed and stupid is he that he thinks leaving his bling at home is worthy of praise??! Shit for brains.

The only considerate thing he could do here is keep his stupid mouth closed.

Well, Carrey’s family did have to stuggle when he was growing up so that could explain his statement. However, it doesn’t make him any less of an a** for the statement. So much for compassion. He must be related to Dick Cheney.

And speaking of compassion, I hope his new movie tanks. He’s overpaid and not funny. …Did I say that? Why yes I did!

I have an idea what they can do with their money, how about some full or partial scholarships since it is going to be hard (especially for us single parents) to get a loan in order to send our kids to college now! And that’s just a starter…

F*Jim Carey, what doosh! Since he doesn’t care, neither will I, about his shitty movies anymore. Thanks! :x

Maybe Jim Carrey could give us some
    of his millions,especially to the
homeless of the U.S. It’s sad people
like Jim Carrey want to keep all their
money instead of giving it away to those that really need it. So watching
his movies makes him richer and what
do we get in return? He’s not the funniest guy in the planet anymore.
