Katie Holmes & Suri Cruise remained in NYC for Sandy, still can’t go home

Katie Holmes

Katie Holmes is just getting back to work on Broadway with Dead Accounts rehearsals, which were cancelled for several days following Hurricane Sandy. She and Suri have been in New York City during the entire ordeal and aftermath (following a pre-hurricane dinner out), and their Chelsea neighborhood was flooded. It’s actually still in bad shape, and a lot of art galleries near Katie’s building are facing massive losses. As for the girls’ home, they weathered the initial hurricane inside their apartment and stayed the night following the immediate power outage. When the water went out the next day, the entire building evacuated, and Katie and Suri relocated to an uptown hotel, where they remain to this date. Hopefully, they’ll get to return home soon, but here are the details from HuffPo:

Katie Holmes

“Suri and Katie stood it out as long as they could,” one resident of the same building in Chelsea tells me. “The power abruptly went out around 8:30 P.M. Monday evening, leaving everyone sitting around torchlight or candle light. Most folks stayed in the building over night and most of the next day until the water went out, making it impossible to even flush the toilet. At that point everyone, including Katie and Suri, left.”

The Mercantile building the pair calls home is a luxury building in Chelsea within walking distance of Suri’s school, the new private school Avenues. But along with all the other residents, once Katie and Suri made the decision to leave, the only way out was walking down the dark staircase.

“Suri might be used to helicopters and chauffeured cars, but once the storm hit we were all the same,” the building insider tells me. “They had to walk from the 12th floor, with no lights, like everyone else.”

But mother and daughter are not feeling too much discomfort since they left the building they call home. Reports say they have checked into the exclusive Mark Hotel on the Upper East Side, not far from the Carlyle Hotel, where Katie and Suri often stayed with ex-husband Tom Cruise.

[From HuffPo]

Mostly, this is a mere inconvenience for Katie because, unlike many other New Yorkers, she can afford to stay in a nice hotel with Suri until things return to normal in her hood. Meanwhile, Us Weekly reports that Katie’s Dead Accounts co-stars (the actors pictured here) are totally loving her non-diva behavior during rehearsals: “People thought they would have to step on egg shells [around her]. She’s got her personal stuff going on, but she leaves that at the door. [And] behind the scenes she’s a funny, loving girl, not an ounce of diva in her.” Apparently, they’re all totally shocked that she eats lunch with the rest of the cast instead of hightailing it to her dressing room for a privately-catered meal. If she was still married to Tom Cruise, that’s probably exactly what he would have demanded of Katie, who is probably just thrilled that she’s able to communicate with actual human beings again!

Why does Holmes continue to drag her poor daughter around like a prop for her endless quest for her own publicity? That poor girl.

    • debbi says:

there is no school in NYC, she can’t stay in her apartment, parks are closed, so is Chelsea Piers what exactly would you like her to do with her daughter leave alone in a hotel room?

      • Janet says:

Schools re-opened today. Subways and buses are back up and running. But 100,000 people are still without power and 40,000 are homeless because their homes were completely destroyed.

      • L says:

Public schools opened today. Alot of the private ones are still closed.

      • Dani says:

Actually, not all public schools are open. Long Island is 50% closed. Some Brooklyn schools too. There isn’t enough gas to provide all the cars and buses in New York, therefore not everyone has somewhere to go/put their child. The gas situation is insane, waited on line for 3 hours yesterday.

      • Amory says:

Like she doesn’t have plenty of nanny help and a huge suite in some hotel.

      @Jules
Not every celebrity that gets papped is doing it for publicity. Maybe a C-list celebrity out in an obvious way is on purpose. But the price for a photo of Katie Holmes & Suri is so high that she would have to force Suri to live a life underground in order to avoid getting papped. I actually think Katie is actually doing MANY activities with Suri underground and surfaces only the few times we see a picture. Katie is constantly having to choose between two evils for what she thinks will be the healthiest for her child and NOT because she is seeking fame.

Glad they are ok its been crazy in the city literally a tale of two cities…some of us have been very luckily unaffected while others have lost everything, just barely getting their power back, unable to get to work or facing insane commutes due to lack of service. Personally I’ve been working nonstop since the storm and am exhausted but boy am I thankful that I’ve had heat, electricity, and transport this whole time. I was hoping to volunteer on my day off Thursday but lo and behold we have a Nor’easter coming.

My heart goes out to you all, wishing I do something other than donate over here in NorCal. My BFF lives in Queens (unaffected in Sunnyside) and the pics she sent me of Rockaway are just heartbreaking. Ugh, another storm…be safe Mln76.

    • Nicolette says:

It really is a tale of two cities. I am fortunate enough, and counting my blessings that I am in an area of Queens that was not affected aside from some power outages and downed trees. My husband worked in The Rockaways yesterday and said it’s unbelievable. The mountains of rubble and sand are everywhere. People are literally gutting their whole house. They have nothing, but still are offering water and coffee to workers coming to help with the cleanup. Amazing grace some people have.

Cannot believe we have another storm on our heels. Heard we could get 2-3 inches of rain, 50-60 mph winds and it’s cold. How many more areas will be flooded and how many more power outages will there be? Not to mention the trees that were weakened by Sandy and are hanging by a thread.

At least Katie Holmes stayed in NYC. I give her credit for that, she could have easily afforded to leave. Unlike other celebs who claim to “care” so much but ran like rats off a sinking ship.

Glad to hear you’re OK. I was unaffected but my friend’s building up the street had basement flooding and no power and she stayed with me. I cannot complain about anything especially because so many people are homeless or still without power. I don’t know what the f*ck the Red Cross is doing but I’ve barely seen them on the news.

Re the Chelsea galleries, I was reading NY Mag this morning. What a mess. Stores too, where basements were flooded. It really is a disaster. I hope other NY/NJ girls out there are OK.

My heart goes out to you all, as well. Ditto on wishing there’s something I could do from NoCali other than donate.

It’s my sincere hope that this Nor’easter skips over the affected areas or just dissipates.

I worry for those without power, and those who are already flooded. The devastation pix have taken my breath my away.

      Stay safe, all!

If I recall correctly Katie has always been nice to co-stars and socialized with them while with Tom. I don’t think it was ever claimed she never left her trailer. The article is so funny. The way neighbors were all like “they were all the same” because Katie and Suri were walking in the dark. They aren’t special.

  4. Janet says:

I’m supremely fortunate and grateful that my neighborhood has had heat, water and power the whole past week, because there are over 100,000 people in NYC and Long Island who are freezing in the dark. They need all the help they can get.

    • e.non says:

ugh… me too. only lost cable overnite, but it was back the next morning. i’m 3 blocks away from red hook where people have no power, water, heat, food and their homes flooded with a toxic soup of god knows what.
occupy wall street has been the group providing some assistance in the absence of state and federal help.
there are elderly and disabled people who have been stuck in their darkened/freezing apts and unable to negotiate the stairs to get out.
not to mention the looters who are going thru the bldgs checking for those apts that have been abandoned. friggin scum of the earth.

      and now there’s a nor’easter expected wed/thus…

  5. Eleonor says:

After being married to Tom Cruise (and probably Tom could teach classes on how to be a real diva) and David Miscavage for years, I bet Katie loves socializing with non-scientology people.

  6. Talie says:

My poor friend in north jersey is *still* without power…it’s awful for some people.

  7. aang says:

Why should she stay inside? The kid has the right to live a life. The paps should stop harassing them.

  8. bk says:

I think it’s great for Suri that they didn’t hightail it out of the city like they could have. Most people here are not in as bad shape as those in Coney or Rockaway or Red Hook or other areas that got hit hard. But because we were all affected some way, and because this is our city, this has been a shared experience. Suri has that now, and can lay some claim to the NYC pride that New Yorkers really do feel. I just hope they’ll do some volunteering when things settle down for them.

    • Amory says:

Yeesh, they stayed because Katie was work obligations. Not sure there is a need to celebrate someone who is enjoying life in a nice hotel – let’s celebrate people who put themselves out there to help others.

      • bk says:

Not sure I’d read my comment as “celebrating” Katie and Suri. I’m just saying it’s probably better for Suri that she stayed. And please let’s not overcomplicate things by implying that saying one good thing about someone means that all others on the planet don’t get good will. Obviously people who are putting their lives on the line should get tons of praise, but I didn’t realize this was an either/or situation, or that that was the topic at hand. Sheesh.

  9. I'mSupposedToBeWorking says:

I know this sounds trivial at a time like this, but I’d just like to say that I love Suri’s adorable shoes in these pics.

  10. aenflex says:

I am SO HAPPY for this girl. She broke her Stepford chains and I am just thrilled.

  11. leuce7 says:

It is nice to have the option to go to a hotel, but still, being affected in any way sucks, and obviously, some people have had to deal with way more than others. I’m in Jersey across the river from downtown Manhattan, but my power was back on by Thursday morning. Having the water/plumbing out sucked, more, I think. I got the tip from a Floridian friend to fill the tub with water to use for flushing before the storm had bad, so it was usable, at least.

I was going stir crazy by Thursday, though. I’m on the 25th floor, so besides there being nowhere else to really go, the couple of times I did have to leave, it was a brutal climb back up, and even when we got power, the elevators were still out until they pumped the water out of the shafts and replaced the shorted electronics. And someone who left their apartment must have turned the water on after the power went out, and left without turning it off, so when the power finally did come back on, his/her water flooded their apartment and their neighbors. I woke up to flooding and power, three days after the storm!

Still, I got off easy. A friend of mine further into New Jersey didn’t get flooding, but lost power two hours before we did and didn’t get it back on until yesterday, and the nights were cold, and she has a two year old and is pregnant. They were lucky to have gas in their car so they’d go to their son’s daycare (who had power) so he’d have something to do all day, and stay there to power up their phones and use the water facilities.

But we all still have relatively untouched homes. There was really bad damage in south Jersey and I think parts of Staten Island are still flooded; they got it really bad, and there’s a storm coming. Donate to the Red Cross if you can, five or ten bucks adds up to a lot if we all do it!

  12. Kosmos says:

I still think it should be illegal to pap kids….they should not have to hide or feel awkward. We need more laws directed at paps…pleeze

  13. Anne de Vries says:

Wow, and Cruise hasn’t swept in to ‘save’ his daughter from these horrible circumstances?
