Brad Pitt’s ‘World War Z’ teaser trailer: is this going to be a hot mess or what?

Obviously, I had a completely different idea of what World War Z was going to be as a film. I didn’t read the book, and I don’t plan to, but from what I understood, Brad Pitt is playing some kind of UN-type, a journalist or diplomat who goes around and talks about what happened during the Zombie Apocalypse, and the actual ‘World War Z’ is told through flashbacks? Is that not what really happens in the book? Because it looks like that is definitely not happening in the movie. In the movie, it looks like Brad Pitt is playing “the one man who can save the world”. And it looks like a mess. Entertainment Tonight aired the teaser on Monday night, ahead of the full trailer which will be out on Thursday. Here you go:

Okay, I’ll just need to save my judgment call for when I see the full trailer. Full disclosure: I’m really not into apocalypse movies, zombie movies, or the-world-is-ending zombie apocalypse movies. So I’m not the target audience for this, even if it is really well-done. If I hear that it is a really good movie, I might see it. But from what I keep hearing, it’s a mess. Brad was filming it for the better part of 2011, and then once principal photography was over, Brad had to go back and do extensive reshoots and apparently he’s not even talking to the director at this point. Brad’s not only the star – he’s a producer. And I’m worried that this will be his Waterworld. Or his Battlefield Earth.

I’m totally part of the target audience but I haven’t read the book yet! I’m way behind. My iPhone will not play the movie trailer on this page. I’ll have to check it out on my PC later.

I’m very interested in this movie and would love to see it, but I’m not sure it’ll be well done considering all of the filming difficulties.

  2. jinni says:

Well there’s not enough to really work with to get a full opinion, but from what I can see it looks like “War of the Worlds” the Tom Cruise version, except with zombies.

I also haven’t read the books, but from the movie forum I hangout on the feeling I get from the book fans is that this book, if it had to be bought to the screen, should have been a mini series on HBO or Showtime because it’s way too complex for the time limit allowed on the big screen.

I liked World War Z the book, but it doesn’t resemble this movie trailer at all. I think a better zombie movie could have been made from Colson Whitehead’s Zone One. That one had a great dramatic ending. Or just skip the zombie movies all together and watch Walking Dead on AMC. Doesn’t get better than that.

  3. RememberThe80s says:

Well I did read the book. It’s one of my favorite. And one man saving the world is not the plot of the book….at all. Each chapter used a different character’s POV from a different area in the world. So I can see how hard this would have been to pull it all together as a film. That said, I’ve been waiting to see it unlike that Red Dawn reboot mess.

    • TheOriginalTiffany says:

That bums me out because I really enjoyed the way the book approached the story. Do not want a hero movie, they could have easily shot this from the book’s POV.

    • LadyMTL says:

I also read the book and loved it and I always wondered how they would adapt it into a movie; unfortunately it looks like they scrapped what made the book so much fun – the different POV’s / stories / tales of survival. Ah well, there’s another movie I’ll scratch off my “want to see” list.

    • dahlianoir says:

I’m ordering the book ASAP, I love zombies and smart stories ^^

    • Deev says:

Well, this looks disappointing. It was a great book, and I was hoping it would be shot documentary style. This would be in line with the style in which the book was written. Now it looks like some generic action film with way too much bad CGI.

    • Kat says:

I absolutely adored the book–one of the best zombie books ever written. But what made it so amazing was exactly what they seem to have taken out of the movie–the different PsOV, following the plague as it spreads and seeing how different people survived given their situations. I’m so disappointed!

    • Leen says:

I’m not usually into zombie literature, but I loved the book. I loved how it was set up and even though it has different characters, there were recurrent characters throughout the book so it could have been done if they tried. I don’t know, I’ll reserve my judgement over the movie. i’ll still see it anyway

    • amurph says:

I loved the book and I agree it should have been as a mini-series or a multi-POV as it was written. The whole point of WWZ was that it was different experiences of the disaster that was zombies.

I kind of feel like they just bought the rights to it to use the name and to get the book fans to go and see it.

    • Issa says:

Exactly!! I don’t recall any of the stories even reflecting a one man savior? By far one of my favorite, horror/dystopian books. I will go see it but think it will have no chance of even coming close to the book.

  4. Amelia says:

For me, the only possible motivation for watching this film is the fact that part of it was filmed where I grew up.
It’s going to be a mess, but with any luck, an entertaining mess.

    • Rhea says:

I’m thinking the same, even if it’s going to mess up the way the author wrote the book, it would still be a good entertaining mess for some.

  5. mln76 says:

I couldnt watch the trailer either the one on youtube doesn’t feature Brad at all. I’m also not the target audience I haven’t even seen Shawn of the Dead. I find zombies sort of lame (but I did like 28 days later).

    • mln76 says:

Ok wait I saw it, basically its an Entertainment Tonight commercial for a trailer which is so not enough to judge..I know these posts fill up but you should have waited for everyone to let them bash/ praise the real thing tommorrow

      • Diana says:

        Hi min,
I don’t understand why some so called fans are the first to rage based on a 20 second teaser! Is this some kind of current cool trend?
Btw, great election results! I expect all of you must be really celebrating right now.

    • MJ says:

I am so, so sick of zombies now, but Shaun of the Dead is really funny. It’s more of a buddy/relationship comedy than horror.

  6. I.want.shoes says:

I’ll see it! Anyone who has read the book first will most likely be disappointed because it would be hard to recreate the story as told in the book.

  7. Sam says:

So from 25 seconds people say it’s a mess? LOL
Well, I like it. It looks fun!
I think the movie it’s gonna be great, stop whining people, geeeez!

And this is not the first or the last movie that has to do some reshoots, that’s very normal, you know…

  8. Bellebeesting says:

Total mess. Won’t even watch it on free cable.

  9. watchingyoubitchh says:

i am gonna wait for the actual trailer to judge.
i am def. the target and it didnt look a mess to me so probably will see it.

    • Camille (TheOriginal) says:

Same here. I LOVE Zombie movies. I am definitely in the target audience. I’ll make a judgement once I see the full trailer and even then I’ll probably end up at least renting it on DVD (yes, even if it is a mess lol).
I still plan on reading the book, but I think I’ll hold out until I’ve seen the movie so that I can’t compare the 2.

This movie surely can’t be any worse than that horrible mess that Will Smith made years ago, which was also a remake of a book & movies; I Am Legend.

  10. gloaming says:

    Consider me teased all over!!

  11. gee says:

It doesn’t look good, but this is just the teaser. Maybe it’ll look better in a longer trailer.

  12. Bowers says:

He can always fall back on furniture design.

  13. india says:

so it does look as bad as everyone said it was going to be
also, brad looks too old to be playing the action hero, sorry dude

I don’t see any way this movie will make it’s money back. The budget is rumored to have crossed $200 million + with all the reshoots, so they’d need it to do probably $500 million + just to break even.

  14. I like Zombie movies and I like Brad so I can’t wait to see this!

  15. carrie says:

all i see is that Brad runs

i read the book and i think it was easily adaptable for tv movies

  16. Miffy says:

I’m apprehensive. I am one of the target audience and this 27 seconds makes me nervous. It seems the bigger the budget, the worse the zombie movie (any/all of the Resident Evils, anyone? Do they even count as zombie films anymore?).

No zombie movie will ever top 28 Days Later, IMO.

  17. MadMadgeThePartyVadge says:

Very hard to tell how good it’ll be from what they showed there. I loved the book (listen to the audio version often, great performances!) and I have been excited to see the movie for years now. I REALLY hope they keep the different POVs from the book, because like other people here have mentioned, it really is the heart of the story. First-hand accounts of the zombie apocalypse from people around the world truly was what made the story different and interesting.

  18. Kim says:

I’ll see it, most the movies he’s done in the last few years I have enjoyed including IB,TOL,Jesse James and Moneyball. Can’t wait to see Killing Them Softly too.Which may be his fourth film in 4 years to receive an Oscar nomination. Great news for marriage equality In Maine ,Maryland and Minnesota

  19. Theresa says:

I love the book, but ambivalent about Pitt. However, some of those scenes in the trailer are unlike any other that have been offered in modern zombie flicks. Some of the most memorable scenes provided by the book were of masses of zombies so large as to be unfilmable. I LOVE some of the the scenes in the trailer that look like the filmmakers at least tried to capture that on film.

I will definitely see this, it looks like the ultimate popcorn zombie horror flick. Walking Dead is providing enough of the slow character building zombie epic slight-snooze-fest that I need.

For those that haven’t read the book, if you like the zombie genre, you have to read it. It gives the mythology the gravitas it deserves!

  20. YuYa says:

I think it looks awesome, but I am a huge huge apocolyptic, end of world, contagion, zombie movie fan.

  21. G says:

Movies and books are two entirely different art forms. A book is so personal, intimate and self created. I’ve just learned over the years not to expect that from a movie.

Impossible to say from this trailer that it’s a mess or a masterpiece.

  22. bohemia says:

    I think it looks good

  23. rosiewriter says:

I liked this movie when it was called “I Am Legend”

  24. trillian says:

I loved the book and its storytelling. Am going to see the movie too, but are the zombies really running there? That would really bug me. One of the most gripping stories was the one about the battle in Yonkers, with all those zombies just shuffling closer, so slow but so many and never stopping. That was really creepy. The running version is just Hollywood 🙁

  25. j.eyre says:

My husband in a zombie snob. They are his monster (undead?) of choice and every time anything zombie comes out, I am made to watch it and then spend the next week listening to what was off about it and how they got the zombies wrong. But make no mistake, we watch every single zombie effort… ever. So, I will check back with you when this comes out and tell you that I fell asleep but my husband has said “…” about it.

  26. Aud says:

I’ve read, from various sources, that this film was a scriptwriting nightmare. The shooting script had to be re-shot in the latter stages, which kind of indicates a host of difficulties.
At the moment, my only Zombie favourites are Shaun of the Dead and Zombieland. They’re not as gross, but they’re funny and cohesive in terms of story. Don’t even get me started on The Walking Dead and the so-so scripts of that show.

  27. orion70 says:

I vote hot mess. Had a feeling right from the get go that BP’s involvement was not going to be a good thing. Please let that “one man saves the world” garbage be part of some stupid dream sequence or something.

  28. LurkeeLee says:

I don’t see the hot mess some are talking about, but maybe we should wait until the actual trailer is out. I agree with some others who say it looks like a ‘War of the Worlds’ or ‘I am Legend’ type flick, so it will appeal to those who like that type of film, which is a wide demographic actually. That’s not a bad thing for box office. It looks alright from what little is here to judge by.
