Is Katie Holmes planning to adopt a toddler girl because Suri is so ‘lonely’?

Katie Holmes

This week’s issue of Star magazine runs with a cover story about how Katie Holmes is embracing single motherhood to such a degree that she’s entered the planning stages of adopting a toddler girl to give a playmate to “lonely” Suri. The story actually seems quite feasible considering Katie’s rapid fire ascent into independence following her split from Tom Cruise. The story gives a lot of believable supporting details like Suri asking Katie for a sister (and “even praying for one at night“), which will sound quite familiar to any parent of an only child. But as I always say (and my daughter has been asking for a baby sister since age 4), they can ask all they want — that doesn’t mean it’s going to happen. That’s pretty much what I think is going on with Suri asking for a sister, and Star is making up this story out of thin air. Still, Star does acknowledge that Katie’s rep has denied the rumors but still maintains that “Katie is in the beginning stages, but her goal is to have a new addition to their family within the next year.” Gossip Cop has also received a denial from Katie’s rep as well:

Katie Holmes

Ever since Katie Holmes left Tom Cruise over the summer, tabloids have continually run BOGUS stories claiming her and Suri’s lives were somehow unhappy and unstable.

But it’s just the opposite.

As Gossip Cop originally reported, one of the main reasons Holmes divorced Cruise was so that Suri could go to school with kids her age, rather than be home schooled by Scientology instructors.

So, the claim that the actress is going to adopt because Suri in lonely and has no friends is completely baseless.

And while it’s natural for small children to ask for younger siblings, it’s NOT true that Suri is unhappy because she doesn’t have a little sister, and it’s totally FALSE that Holmes is “concerned” about her daughter’s supposed solitary state.

A rep for Holmes tells Gossip Cop exclusively it’s “NOT true” that the actress has any plans right now to adopt a child, adding, “Star obviously needed to sell magazines.”

Oh well. Star tried really hard with this filler story (it really has been a slow news week leading up to Thanksgiving) and even added amusing details about how Katie “checked out the Angelina Jolie approach of looking at orphanages in Africa, Asia and Europe” but settled upon using an NYC adoption agency. Obviously, this is a nice story as far as gossip goes, and who knows if Katie will actually adopt in the future, but it’s safe to say that she’s already got her hands full with raising Suri and attempting to reboot her acting career on Broadway. Nice try, Star.

“checked out the Angelina Jolie approach of looking at orphanages in Africa, Asia and Europe”

WTF lets shop babies? Uh, lets go through the catalog – do I want white or black, which would look better on my arm? I love blue, which baby goes best with that! Hate that while “normale” people wait for years and years to adopt – the same rules don’t apply to celebs and the medie think its okay to talk this way about adopting.

    • Amy625 says:

It’s really disgusting that people call adoption “shopping for babies”. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to adopt from a 3rd or 4th world country. Many believe a child in Africa is a lot mor disadvantaged that adopting in the US. Anyway, Katie isn’t adopting. If she wanted more kids she would have had another with Tom. Also just being divorced, expanding her family probably isn’t her focus.

      • emmie_a says:

There’s no way Katie would’ve had another kid with TC! I think she realized his crazy sooner than we think and has been making plans to escape for some time.

But I agree that adopting is probably not her focus after starting this new phase in her life.

    • Apsutter says:

Agreed. It’s sickening the way that celebs decide to adopt and literally have a baby one week later. I have a friend whose sister has been diligently trying to adopt for the past SEVEN YEARS and it hasn’t gotten them anywhere. They’ve poured money into it and they’re no closer to getting a baby now then when they started. I feel terrible cause her sis really wants kids but can’t have them naturally. They’ve pretty much resigned themselves to not having kids now and moving on with their lives together as a couple.

      • Jayna says:

Maybe if they put no race preferred, it would have happened. I can’t imagine it ever taking seven yesrs unless they are trying to adopt a newborn white baby. Many people go overseas because the time is shorter and are adopting children that are not newborns. But for all the people I know it was still about an eight month to year process. I have never seen any celeb get a baby in a week overseas. Maybe it’s the first you heard of it, when they are in the last stage and picking up the child, but that’s not the length of time from beginning to end. I think adopting from a third world country is admirable, as I do people like Sandra Bullock adopting any race domestically. And even that took three to four years I think here.

      • mln76 says:

Why the need to bash adoption? Looking at adoption agencies isnt shopping its research. As for your sister I’m sorry its taken that long. In general in the US it can especially if you specify race, health etc. Which is why some go the foreign adoption route.
I know people who are middle class to upper middle class who have gone to foreign countries and the wait was much shorter. while the my have spent alot of money in the process I’d no more call it buying a baby then I would a person who spent thousands on fertility treatments.

      • Gayle says:

I believe Sandra Bullock and Charlize Theron both said the process took them two years, which I think is average for domestic adoption. Don’t know anything about foreign adoption, only that China is much harder these days.

If one goes foreign, the only concern I have is that one check out these places thoroughly b/c often their laws are not always as fair or kosher about these things.

    So Suri prays?
what will Tom think of that.

BTW I don’t think it’s true at all. Katie wouldn’t risk anything in this whole divorce mess. She had everything planned out in extreme detail, and I think she would conclude that it’s best for them if they are just the two of them atm. Have some peace.

  3. Devon says:

Is it me or does Suri look a lot happier since the split? She’s been photographed playing with kids around her own age and smiling. I’m trying to think back if there were any photos of her smiling before and none come to mind.

    • Apsutter says:

She looks so happy lately! Before her and Katie both looked completely miserable all the time. Remember when Tom would be dragging the two of them around NY in the winter and Suri would look miserable and cold from the paps and never having a freakin jacket. I’m glad that she’s finally got some playmates now. I really commend Katie during this whole divorce. She clearly did it all for her and Suri’s best interest and got her to a normal life insanely quick.

    • emmie_a says:

Absolutely agree with everything you said. I’ll just add that besides miserable, they used to look very robot-like. I’ve become a huge Katie fan – she really came out on top through all this.

  4. Amy says:

File under: Waste of time. Happy Thanksgiving to Katie, Suri and everyone reading this. And while I have your attention
{gets up from keyboard, gathers three cans and two boxes of non-perishable food from pantry}:

If you’re lucky enough to have enough to eat this season, throw a can or box into a food donation container. We gather together every day for the (for me, guilty) pleasure of checking out what people we think are living golden, magic, glossy lives are up to. Many of us – and I totally count myself in this category – are living pretty charmed lives, too.

Happy (U.S.) Thanksgiving (and belated Diwalli happiness to all!

  5. Rianic says:

Idk – she’ll be 34 in Dec, maybe that clock is ticking?

  6. Apsutter says:

In that bottom pic with Katie in that horrid purple top and black skirt she looks like one of those little paper dolls kids have where you change there outfit by sticking it on. Seriously, the skirt looks ridiculous.

    • Velouria says:

I was just gonna say something about that too; it looks like if she started walking it would fall off.

  7. ladybert62 says:

Get a pet! It’s cheaper and easier than another kid!

I also doubt Queen Suri would be willing to share mommy with a baby -too much competition.

But a pet is something that Queen Suri can possess all by herself and learn some discipline by having to care for it.

    • CF98 says:

You must have missed Suri’s pout when Katie took her to the pet store and she wanted a puppy but Katie said no.

I’m guessing in the future they will have a dog but not right now.

  8. mln76 says:

I think she’ll get married eventually (to a normal person hopefully) and have another kid.

  9. Sara says:

She needs to make celebrity non-scientologist friends that have children and then have play dates. What about kids from her school, can she play with them?

    • CF98 says:

I believe she’s already doing that this is bunk

Besides she just got divorced I doubt she’s thinking about a kid right now a year from now perhaps but not now.

  10. Belle Epoch says:

Worst. Idea. Ever. Buying a living doll to keep Suri company. A bad, bad reason to adopt a toddler! Poor kid would have marshmallows stuffed down its throat the first week.

Lots of kids are singletons and they manage to make friends with kids their own age. What’s the problem?

  11. Chrissy says:

I have no idea if this is true or not but it’s nice to see pictures of Suri with other kids smiling and having fun.

  12. J7 says:

Skinny jeans and skirts that are below the knee are ghastly in her. Otherwise, she is glowingly beautiful.
