Madonna must be really pissed. On Monday, her rep, Liz Rosenberg, issued a statement to the Associated Press that Madge and Guy Ritchie reached a financial settlement in the range of $76 million to $92 million. But now Madonna and Guy have issued a statement saying that’s “misleading and inaccurate.”
The statement reads:
“We have tried to maintain a dignified silence regarding the details of our divorce for the last few months whilst accepting the obvious media interest.
“A misleading and inaccurate statement, specifically in relation to the sums of money involved, was wrongly issued to AP this week.
“The financial details of the settlement will remain private, save to say that both of us are happy with our agreement.
“Our primary concern, like any co-parents, is the care and well being of our children.”

It seems to me that Madge and Guy just don’t like that the information got out there. The $76 million to $92 million amount Liz Rosenberg named is so broad that they could technically call it inaccurate. Rosenberg has been Madonna’s rep for a long time and is generally a pretty quiet one. Most of her responses are variations of “no comment,” and “untrue.” I was truly surprised she ever announced anything. So I’m disinclined to believe she put out a statement that’s a lie.
I’m guessing it’s more likely that there was some miscommunication or Madonna and Guy changed their minds and didn’t want the information out there. They couldn’t tell the press, “Never mind, we wish we hadn’t said anything so pretend you don’t know.” All they could do is say it’s “inaccurate.” But I love the line about being good parents. It has absolutely nothing to do with the rest of the statement. Excellent diversion.

I see it differently. I think Madonna was really annoyed with Guy’s “gentleman” claims (i.e. that he neither requested nor received a money settlement from Madonna). By having her rep “mistakenly” announce the settlement, she “disproved” that he was a gentleman, got the money figure out there (as a reported cheapskate, the enormous amount of money must have royally irked her) and then passive-aggressively tells Guy that she never meant to reveal those details, since they after all are co-parents and must work together for the sake of the children. Good one, Madonna.

I think you got it right, J. Ferber. She wanted us to know that guy is not the gentleman he claims to be. Even if she apologized later, what is done, is done, and we cann’t forget what we heard.
Disagree. From reading elsewhere, I reckon she released these figs because she hated the fact that Guy was still getting good press. Guy wasn’t having it – imo because the settlement fig. here was manipulated to make him look greedy – and forced her to release this statement under threat of fresh, unfavourable leaks from him. Don’t forget, a lot of this settlement is prime London and Gloucester property – that’s a major chunk of the settlement.
Just Madge trying, as usual, to control everything – incl. how people should regard Guy – and finding she can’t.
