Will Smith donated $122k to Scientology

seven pounds premiere 5 171208

Will Smith once said that he’s a student of world religion, and he’s sure putting his money where his mouth is. Will and wife Jada’s most recent tax return was just made public, and the couple gave an admirable $1.3 million to charities, including lots of religious groups. But Will didn’t just stick to one religion – he covered lots of them, including a cult! That’s right, over $100,000 was donated to various Scientology causes.

Just-released tax returns for movie star Will Smith’s charitable foundation show he and wife, Jada, gave $1.3 million in donations last year to a variety of religious, civic and arts groups. Smith’s biggest single contribution was, as usual, Yesha Ministries of Philadelphia. He gave the born-again Christian based organization run by Reverend James Robinson a whopping $250,000. That’s a hefty raise from the $140,000 he gave them the previous year. Another $200,000 went to a Christian ministry outside Los Angeles called Living Waters.

He also gave a combined $122,500 to the Church of Scientology, broken into these donations: $67,500 to the New York Rescue Workers Detoxication Fund, $50,000 to the group’s Celebrity Center in Hollywood and $5,000 to ABLE, another Scientology offshoot. Smith and his wife have also supported a private school called New Village Academy they opened this fall in suburban Los Angeles that uses Scientology learning concepts.

The star of movies like “Hancock,” “I Am Legend,” and the upcoming “Seven Pounds” also donated thousands of dollars to a Los Angeles mosque, other Christian-based schools and churches, and to the Yitzhak Rabin Memorial Center in Israel…

The newest federal tax filing for the Will Smith Foundation covers 2007, and there is no donation to New Village Academy. So far there is no listing with guidestar.org, the website that tracks charities and not-for-profit institutions, for New Village. That seems odd since it was announced more than a year ago that Smith had given them a $1 million endowment.

[From Fox News]

So that’s at least $122,500 to Scientology, with a possible $1 million more, depending. Fox is right (rarely do I say that): the lack of any mention of New Village Academy is very odd. It makes me wonder at what point in the year Will and Jada made each of the donations, and if they changed their mind about the school. Though they’ve been fuzzy with the details, from most reports Will and Jada founded the school, so it seems unusual that it’s not on their tax returns.

While I’m never a fan of Scientology or supporting cults, I have to give Will some serious credit for spreading his money around to lots of religions. That really is admirable and shows a lot of compassion as well as an open mind. Now if only he could put that Scientology money towards a group that didn’t kidnap and murder members that wanted to leave, it’d be even better.

In related Will Smith news, his newest film “Seven Pounds” is getting torn to shreds in reviews. One Rotten Tomatoes reviewer called it, “An unintentionally ludicrous drama of repentance as an extreme sport.” Ouch.

Thanks to Defamer for the tip.

Here’s Will and costars at the premiere of “Seven Pounds” in L.A. on Tuesday. Images thanks to WENN.

Will, your ‘full of shit’ is showing.

  2. geronimo says:

@baho – seems we are the only two dissenting Will voices on CB! *Sigh* I dream of the day when a Will Smith post addresses all the things I’d really like to see addressed about him and his beyond-reproach family life…

  3. Kaiser says:

Baho, Geronimo – Do you think he’s one of those celebs in all of the blind items about “secret” lives/boyfriends/fetishs?

He has been giving off a weird vibe lately.

  4. Baholicious says:

No kidding Geronimo. I don’t know where this Will-worship comes from or why it’s even deserved. We’re not hearing anything regarding their personal life ie. swapping, bisexuality etc. because the Smiths are mobbed-up in Scientology to their eyeballs.

  5. Baholicious says:

Yep Kaiser. Him and Kevin Spacey.

  6. SolitaryAngel says:

I’m with you guys, though it pains me to say. I’m not a Will Smith fan anymore. Kaiser, I DO think he’s in the blind items–you’re not the only one who thinks he’s been giving off a weird vibe. Wonder what it IS?

  7. geronimo says:

Kaiser/Baho – not just blind items. So many recurring stories, all pointing to a very different Will than the one trotted out for public consumption.

  8. dovesgate says:

I know a woman who is friends with a celebrity. That celebrity told her that both Will and Tom are gay and Katie’s contract was shopped around to multiple Hollywood actresses.

  9. Baholicious says:

@dovesgate: oh god that is so sick…*edit* p.s. I knew about him wanting to ‘audition’ women, but a contract was already in existence??

*edit* p.s. Right Geronimo, wasn’t Smith’s name linked to that rape of a boyfriend story that floated around as a blind item a couple of months ago?

  10. Christina says:

oh please… you guys are all just itchin for a scandal…

  11. yadira says:

    Scandals here are good.

  12. pinknblack says:

Oh dear. There seems to be rather a backlash from the Will-love, so I’m going to have to (shamefully) make up for it. I’m sorry:

I love him. He makes films both me AND my mother can watch without me wanting to stab my eyes out. The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air is a wonderful hangover cure. I also find him amusing and rather likable in interviews.

Regarding the Scientology: LALALALA I CAN’T HEAR YOU!

  13. vdantev says:

Well I’m never watching any of his movies ever again.

  14. Baholicious says:

*he says with hands on hips* LOL Dante.

  15. MB Travis says:

Hancock officially inoculated me to the charm-bomb that is Will Smith. I won’t even Netflix this new one. Blech.

  16. Ron says:

He’s one of those actors I am tired of seeing he needs to go on vaca for about 10 years. In fact take Tom with you, tired of him too!

  17. Little Hutt says:

I’m loving my home country (France) right now, because it still considers Scientology is NOT a religion but a cult. I’m not sure I can keep liking Will Smith after this, even though I’ve had a soft spot for him for years.

  18. hmm says:

Yet he also donated over half a million dollars to Christian churches so what’s the big deal? Lainey has the break down of the money so to focus only on Scientology is a little bit misleading.

  19. Baholicious says:

@Hmm: Nope, he’s working REAL hard to hide something. Nobody is that egalitarian, especially with their money. Given too the number of denominations of Christian churches, giving $122k to Scientology is pretty disproportionate.

For instance: What’d he give the Seventh Day Adventists?

  20. SeVen says:

I used to love him…. he had that talent to do comedy and drama and action films but really… his appeal started to dwindle when he got hooked up with Tommy Girl. I dont care what religion one follows or donates too but $cientology is a cult and he never mentioned them till tommy girl came around. Oh well, Tommy sucked the young and attractive out of Kat(i)e and now hes sucking the charisma out of Will ….

  21. Kristen says:

Run Will run – Tom will take you down with him and his stepford wife.

  22. california angel says:

Well maybe he’s reverting to the old catholic tradition of buying indulgences?

  23. swampass says:

Sooooo bored with will smith. Hopefully he will supersaturate the culture and will be faced to take a break for a while (I know, wishful thinking…) He needs to chill and give other young talents a chance to get out there and get known. Wouldn’t miss him at all if took an extended hiatus.

  24. aleach says:

i liked him better when he was “the fresh prince”

  25. Shay says:

It’s been a long standing rumor in “urban” blogs that Will is gay or bi. Would explain his attraction to Scientology. He also gives off the same vibe as Tom. I’m surprised his people haven’t told him to keep his distance.

Yea it’s great he donated more to legitimate churches. The only problem is $cientology charges people who want to learn their teachings and threatens to sue those who make it readily available. They don’t deserve a donation.

  26. lene says:

mh…i still like will smith. maybe he is just very open for the world. i’m not a fan of religion…all in all.

  27. gg says:

The Cult of Money. I’m not impressed. When you make a zillion a year, you HAVE to give large amounts to charities or you screw yourself taxwise. And like $cientology really needs more money! Bad!

  28. Dubdub2000 says:

I’m adding my voice to those who think that Will Smith’s whole “I’m perfect and so is my family” schtick is iffy. I used to really like him, I still like his movies to tell you the truth, but HE has gotten weird. Tom Cruise weird. The “over-laughing”, the constant extreme “I can’t hold in, my life, wife & kids are jus so perfect joy ” that he has to tell EVERYONE about constantly and there have indeed been way too many rumors about his marriage. Also everything he says or does sounds and/or looks soooo calculated, so premeditated, so manipulative,so “pretty house with picket white fence perfect”…WEIRD!
I’ll add to Smith and cruise a third name: Hugh Jackman, who is becoming more and more Cruisy and Smithy as years go by. Same over laugh, same over joy, same weirdness…

  29. mark says:

I will now and forever boycott the Fresh Prince.

  30. Jane says:

Any money, to any religion, is stupid.
