My mother & mother in-law didn't start menopause until 58, meaning birth control was still necessary. Not a good idea since baby girls are born w/ their eggs. In Late 40's & 50's, their eggs have been thru hell & getting old & tired. Bottom line, still possible. You take your chances. An aquaintence was pregnant in late 40's & really wanting a child. Amnio. showed down syndrome & poof, baby aborted. Selective process nowadays. Too bad!

One in ten? Yikes. I'm torn, though, because they seem devoted to their son, and they obviously have the means to support an expanding family. I guess I'll stay neutral on this one.

I have a friend that is 49 and was told that she was still fertile and able to carry if she so chose, so the birth control thing is definitely on her list of things to do.:-) She's amazingly young looking, naturally, no Hollywood b.s. Youth extends long in her family. Hell, she was tired of the like-clockwork cycles and considered the hysterectomy but her doctor said no way and she really didn't want to go that route but her children all are all in their early twenties...she's done. But bottom line, she's perfectly capable of carrying her own eggs to term. High risk? Any pregnancy runs risk.

Myself? I was told I'm not anywhere near menopausal and I'm 48! Yep, that would kill me if the test were positive (also a miracle as the basic parts not including mah ovaries are gone...course, I could become a millionaire on the talk shows! Heh.)It's all dependent on the individual.

Back to the topic, I don't think the story is true, regardless. Just more tabloid fodder.

Sorry for the TMI.;-)

JR are you a medical Doctor or somehow do you have access to this womans medical records? If not then just shut up. It is physically possible for a woman of her age to conceive. Some girls reach puberty later and therefore the onset of menopause starts later in life. Unless you are the official spokesperson for her uterus I would advise you to stop talking with such supposed authority.

If they are her eggs, they're courting danger needlessly. And if she's simply going to be the carrier because she's stopped producing eggs, that's even dumber for her, because the baby will leach important nutrients from her bones, at the very least. But it's her body. Stupid woman. If the whole thing is donor eggs they should use a younger carrier.

And I'm sorry but this whole carrier business really takes the romance out of building a family, if they're even calling it that. I think he's just jealous cause Ricky has two.

At 50 years old, this woman is definitely not using her own eggs. It is physically impossible. Virtually no woman over the age of 46 is able to use her own eggs. She is without question using donor eggs from a younger woman and just serving as the surrogate. Therefore, there is no particular risk of genetic problems.

Yeah, I really think 50 is unsafe.... but hey, Hollywood celebs could really care less about the child. Kids are just the next "hot item" to accumulate to them. So who really cares if *they* are safe, right?

A teacher of mine was only in her early 40's when she got "surprised" with her daughter, and the baby is a mongol (is that what it's called? It's a form of down syndrome or something...).
