For people with means and money it's about as bad as a flu. It's unlikely to really cause too many complications as long as it's caught early. And yeah, if you've been to a malaria area, and you start to get a flu, you just get a 30 min blood test at the first signs and nip it in the bud. I've never had it (luck) even though I don't take antimalarials but my roommates have all had it multiple times and most here are very nonchalant about it. But that's people in the city. It's still a huge deal to those without medical centers around. Which is why it kills so many in Sub Saharan Africa. So many villages and areas here don't have testing/pharmacies.
