Girls aged 12-15 tend to swoon over boy banders and teeny boppers who are smooth skinned and barely masculine- looking. I think sociologists have argued that it is because they are less threatening than boys/men who have more overtly defined 'maleness' such as stubble/deep voices etc. It's a way of young girls 'testing out' their sexuality within safe confines - which becomes all the more 'safe' given that these pin-ups are unobtainable (i.e. famous).
