Thanks for your post. I don't think I have ever heard of grad students getting a decent deal. It's always raw. The only way I can survive is by TA-ing and that includes grading shit loads of papers. I enjoy the TA conferences and interacting with students but I can really do without grading. In fact I'm grading the midterms now. There's another midterm in March and then the final. It's exhausting to juggle both TA work and my own grad work. I agree about graduate housings. The rent they charge is ridiculous. I stayed at one during my first year with a few other grad students. We moved out after an year and god we are saving some extra cash for food :) The Simpsons episode and PhD comics is what keeps us laughing at out plight each day. It's very easy to lose it otherwise.
