Anne Hathaway in Gucci at the Costume Designers Guild Awards: cute or fug?

Here are some photos from the 15th Annual Costume Designers Guild Awards at the Beverly Hilton last night. The Costume Designers Guild got some good people to come out, but I swear, I think the Hair Guild and the Makeup Artists Guild might have been on strike last night. There were some cute outfits, but the styling was terrible in many cases. Anne Hathaway was one of the big “gets” at the event – maybe because she’s literally appeared at EVERY awards show this year – and she looked cute. Her sparkly dress is Gucci, and she’s giving me hope that she’ll be styled kind of mod/1960s for the Oscars. Her eye makeup is the one thing I hate – much too heavy.

Amy Poehler and her new breakup bangs (UGH) in Prada. Ever since Gwyneth Paltrow wore that amazing Tom Ford Super-GOOP cape, designers have been doing more capes and caplets. Although I love her, this cape isn’t flattering – it makes her look slumped and hunchbacked. And the satin just looks… bad.

I didn’t even recognize Cat Deeley now that she’s super-blonde. She looks good but I wish women would stop flat-ironing their hair. It’s such a dated look. Her dress is Monique Lhuillier.

Ginnifer Goodwin in Misha Nonoo – it looks like de la Renta, right? Except this dress fits better than most de la Renta gowns these days. I think this might be my favorite dress of the event.

Joel McHale was the host of the event. This photo is just for CB.

Kristen Wiig in… an unknown designer. I think this is a really cute look for her, I just would have changed her hair. Maybe a chignon.

Lily Collins in Paule Ka. Terrible. Just terrible. The worst look of the night.

AnnE looks really cute. I like her dress. This is probably the first time I’ve said something nice about her this awards season.

    • Becky1 says:

I agree! The dress is really cute and it works well with her hair. 60’s mod styling looks good on her.

  2. RocketMerry says:

Lol, this reminds me of the latest Barely Political video about the Oscar nominees. The girl playing AnnE is awesome (not nearly as good as Emma from the For Your Consideration parody, but still).

Oh, about fashion: I only like McHale here. Sigh, he’s sooo gorgeous.
And I detest Ginnifer Goodwin’s dress with a passion (ps, I think Morrison is the other one from Once upon a time, the one that plays Snow White’s daughter).

  3. Claire says:

    Bleurgh @ Lily Collins..
I hate when girls’ spines look like that. I know she can’t help it.. well.. she could put on weight actually.
    It gives me chills

    • EmmaStoneWannabe says:

IKR. They really need to stop trying to make Lily Collins happen. She is not a thing.

      • cmc says:

Really? What’s the issue with her? I think she’s super pretty and when my little cousin insisted on watching Mirror, Mirror I found her really charming and likeable. I didn’t realize she was a Camilla Belle type 🙂

    • Annie says:

What spine? I can’t see any spine! There is an indent along the spine area, which is generally what you see on any well nourished person – even an overweight person has a “mark” where the spine goes. Her weight is fine! Sheesh, gaining weight is not the solution to every single last world problem. As a normal weight, non obese person I find this comment offensive.

    • Reece says:

@EmmaStone She’s the lead in the Mortal Instruments movie(s). She ain’t going no where for the foreseeable future.

@Annie I think it’s the vertebrae and frontal rib cage indents that creep people out.

Overall she’s meh to me. Looks like she started shaping her brows instead of letting them go uni-brow. She looks more put together now which is nice.

  4. T.C. says:

Anne Hathaway’s dress is too short otherwise she looks good. Thumbs up to Amy Poehler too but she really shouldn’t do a full mouth smile, makes her look unhinged. Joel McHale is looking fine.

  5. CM says:

Just a quick note: it’s Ginnifer Goodwin, not Morrison. :). Loved her dress last night.

    • judyjudy says:

I love Ginnifer Goodwin to bits. I just wish she would stop making that awful tilted, chin up face she makes in Every. Single. Picture.

Stop it with the face, Ginnifer. Stop it! Stop it! Stop it!!!

  6. bopit says:

I really like Wiig as a redhead.
Hold-up flat ironing hair is dated? Maybe it’s just where I’m from, but is straight hair not a common thing? How do people where you live style their hair?

    • Hollz says:

I think she means straightening it to the point it looks like it’s straw and leaving it like that. Straightening is big here, but it never looks like “The Aniston” like her hair does in that picture.

      • KellyinSeattle says:

Kristen Wiig really does look like Aniston in that pic….I do like Anne’s dress/sandals, but not many other of the outfits. I love Amy Poehler but really hate the ensemble .

  7. I think Lily Collins’ look is the best of the night. Well, different strokes for different folks.

Anne’s hair looks like Bieber’s old haircut.

  8. bea says:

Amy P – what the heck?! She’s been looking super fantastically great lately, but you’re right, she looks slouchy in her satin cape thingy.

  9. bns says:

I can’t wait to see what she’ll wear at the Oscars.

  10. Tessa says:

Anne looks good. I like the dress, and as her hair grows, her looks soften. She’s pretty, but she needs the hair to tone down her extreme features.

  11. Jacqueline says:

What’s up with Goodwin’s eyebrow situation? Somebody call Michael K
Could Wiig be any skinnier or more tan?

  12. Samantha says:

I don’t like Anne’s shoes but the dress is cute.

Without the bow, Lily’s dress would be cute.

  13. Teresa__Maria says:

I think there has been a mix-up with Ginnifer Goodwin and Jennifer Morrison 🙂

  14. Miss so and so says:

I dont like Anne’s dress it looks like someone used a hot glue gun and rolled her in those tiles…

Lilly looks like she is playing in her mama’s clothes.

Also I thought Cat Deeley was Kaley Couco (spelling is wrong, too lazy to look it up) from Big Bang Theory

  15. Dinah says:

I.Love.Kristin’s.Shoes. But her hair makes her look like a sad puppy.

Anne’s dress suits her well. She looks cute.

  16. Chickenlishus says:

AnnE’s dress is in my top 10 of all time! Stunning.

  17. Dani says:

I looooove Lily’s dress!! Also…I almost always wear my hair ironed (not that close to my face) but my hair is an unruly mess of curls I have no choice 🙁

  18. GoodCapon says:

    I love Wiig’s purse!

Oh and what the hell was Lily Collins thinking?!?!

  19. lucy2 says:

I like Anne’s look, but agree about too much eye makeup.
I like Ginnifer’s for her, she has an offbeat style.
Don’t much care for any of the others.

  20. Amy says:

    So smug.

  21. stinkyman says:

Anne cannot help looking cute. She has a soulful face. Don’t think the dress would have made it through with such elegance were it not on her.

  22. Indefenseofinterestinghair says:

So, let me make sure I have all this:

    1. no bangs
    2. no flat iron
    3. no crazy/fun/unnatural colors
    4. nothing too short or punky
    5. no Croydon facelift
    6. no short bobs
    7. no long bobs
    8. no dark roots/transition colors
    9. no shaggy razor cuts
    10. nothing “too severe”

Hell, I seem to recall you complaining about finger waves once as too costume-y.

That pretty much leaves the “Medium length Natural Color Veronica Lake Wave” or “Medium length Natural Color soft bun” as the only hairstyles you approve of.

At this point I can open any fashion post on this site and know pretty much exactly what the complaints will be.

  23. emmie_a says:

Amy: No. Love her but I think you have to be tall and statuesque to pull off a cape.

Cat: Don’t know who she is but she’s cute and looks great.

Ginnifer: I can’t stand her smug-looking face but I do like her dress.

Kristin: Like the dress and love her shoes but she should cut her hair – maybe a cute bob? The Karlie cut would look awesome on her.

Lily: I actually LOVE her dress. It’s so fun.

I don’t know why I have wedding dresses on my mind but Ginnifer’s and Lily’s gowns would be great in white!

And thank you for Joel. I love Community!! I was worried about this season after they fired the creator but it still has the same feel as before so all is good. Curious how they are going to get rid of Pierce. Hope they don’t kill him off.

  24. Amanda says:

I think Lily would have looked really great of not for the unnecessary gigantic white bow. WHY???

  25. Jenna says:

    You mean Ginnifer Goodwin?

And eh; the dress is okay. Not crazy about the shoes. But that Justin Bieber hair is a total fcuk no!

Also, HELLO JEFF WINGER!!! Six seasons and a movie!

  26. Shira says:

When I saw Kristen Wiig I was like “is that Kristen Wiig???” for a few seconds. I should KNOW it’s you, Kristen.

  27. Kaiser says:

    Fixed Ginnifer Goodwin, sorry! Brain-fart.

  28. EmmaStoneWannabe says:

Amy looks pretty rough here. Unfortunate cape disaster. Fug fug fug.

  29. epiphany says:

For me, Hathaway is the same category as ScarJo, Julia Roberts, and Aniston – average to modestly pretty woman that the Hollywood PR machine keeps pushing down our throats as “gorgeous”, or “breathtaking.” None of the aforementioned woman are anywhere close to beautiful. (IMO) You wouldn’t look twice at these women if they walked past you, with the possible exception of Scarjo IF she was wearing a tight sweater at the time (showing off her best assets.) Facially, none of them are especially good looking.

    • emmie_a says:

Totally agree. Without all the added bells and whistles they are nothing more than your average pretty girl.

    • MST says:

I would add a few others, like Rooney Mara, to that list. And actually I think Anne Hathaway homely.

Don’t forget these women have access to the top hairstylists, makeup artists, etc. in the world. What would they look like without all that “help?”

      • stellalovejoydiver says:

Rooney is not everyone´s cup of tea, but I find her to have a delicate, unique beauty, like a poor man´s Audrey Hepburn. She doesn´t put herself out there as the new sexy girl either, opposite to Emma Stone and Jennifer Lawrence who are much more plain looking.

    • Jany says:

      @epiphany & @MST:

That may be true in the technical sense of the word – but they might have that certain something nevertheless. I think you’d be surprised if you’d meet some of them. I’m not really into Aniston, or think Roberts is that great. But Roberts does have charism for ex. She wouldn’t have been so succesful in the past, trust me.

Also – I wonder what kind of girls/women you’d like to see act? Perfect model face beauties? Bo-ring. There’s a reason most models never get an acting career off the ground…

    • Shira says:

I’ve never heard someone refer to Anne as breathtaking or gorgeous and I would probably scoff if I do, but Scarlett is drop dead gorgeous. I mean, she’s the package.

    • Becky1 says:

I disagree with @ Epiphany about ScarJo. I don’t particularly like her as an actress but she’s got a very pretty face and a banging body. I don’t see people who look like her on a regular basis (of course, I live in Baltimore and not NYC or LA where the “pretty people” tend to live LOL).

  30. s says:

OMG, Kristen Wiig looks ancient! Ann looks amazing. Credit where credit is due.

  31. Melanie says:

I’m not even looking at the photos. Went straight to the comment box to say that something about Hathaway rubs me the wrong way…..

  32. Gemini08 says:

Love Ginnifer Goodwin’s style. As for Lily Collin’s dress- I think you’re being too harsh. First off she is young and that is when you experiment and have fun with fashion. And second I don’t think the dress is THAT bad. I think she simply could have styled it better (hair, makeup, etc). I agree about Anne’s makeup. Love the dress but heavy eye makeup just doesn’t work on her.

  33. Maggi says:

    Love Lily’s dress!

Ginnifer’s dress is horrible in my opinion, it overwhelms her and is just an ugly dress that would render any wearer matronly.

  34. gefeylich says:

AnnE pretends to herself that this look is pure Audrey Hepburn (dream on, kid), but the outfit just screams Liza Minnelli.

Oh, and I know Poehler is trying to experiment a bit now that she’s single again, but this dress is a mistake. She’s much too short to carry off the look. I say this because I love her, and I know she can look great (ie GGs) if she tries.

  35. Julie says:

What is wrong with Anne’s face? It might be the lighting or the makeup, but it looks really strange – like she got some weird nose job.

  36. Caroline says:

Lily’s dress is so cute..the bows kind of remind me of wings~.~
Anne’s shoe’s are not properly fitted
