Jennifer Lawrence in poufy Dior at the Oscars: one of her best looks yet or boring?

Jennifer Lawrence

Jennifer Lawrence continued her Christian Dior trend at the Oscars last night (where she won Best Actress!) with this white (pale pink?), poufy Dior Haute Couture gown. Perhaps my only complaint is that it was a white dress and too weddingish, and I wanted to see Jennifer in a brighter color. Maybe even red to reference that amazing Calvin Klein gown from two years ago. Too much to ask? Probably. Most of you seemed to love the white color on this close-to ball gown. I have to admit that Jennifer looks a lot better here than she has on most red carpets of late. What really won me over was not even the dress but the pearl-encrusted necklace falling down her back. Her makeup even looks good here! She should always do smokey eyes.

Jennifer Lawrence

Of course, everyone knows that Jennifer tripped (and fell!) on the way up the stage stairs. I think this happened not only because of the sheer size of her dress but also because she seemed breathless and genuinely surprised that she won for Best Actress. She probably really thought it would go to someone else — it was like she felt that she hadn’t paid her dues enough to win this massive award yet. Please don’t let her go all Gwyneth on us now. Here’s a video of the fall and JLaw’s acceptance speech:

Jennifer Lawrence

Amanda Seyfried

Amanda Seyfried was pretty damn gorgeous in her lilac/nude organza gown by Alexander McQueen. You can tell that, unlike a lot of her other red carpet dresses, Amanda loves this gown. She should! She proudly admitted, “they’ve been working on this [dress] for months. I feel super lucky.” The halter top design is what really sets this dress off for me, and all of the embroidery would ordinarily seem like overkill to me, but everything just drapes so beautifully with this dress. Her dramatic makeup really brought out those peepers too.

Amanda Seyfried

Samantha Barks

Samantha Barks wore a wonderfully simple, silhouette-hugging, black Valentino gown. Bam! If audiences didn’t know who Samantha was before the show, they sure know now. Somehow, she pulls off a seriously plunging neckline without looking cheap, and this girl really reminds me of a younger Diane Lane in this dress. I wouldn’t use that comparison for hardly anyone, but Samantha’s just that gorgeous here. Jewelry is by Forevermark, and the slightly messy updo is perfect. Kelly Osbourne called this dress the black equivalent of Jennifer Lawrence’s red Calvin Klein gown.

Samantha Barks wore Valentino and not Anne. Interesting.

    • Bird says:

I think it’s an obvious attention grab and I think her boobs are just a little too big to pull this look off and actually look classy. You’d almost have to be flat as a board. I think this look is inappropriate – it would be a great dress for the Grammy’s or something, but I think she looks trashy. It doesn’t look as bad in photos, but on the red carpet she looked way too exposed.

      • EmmaStoneWannabe says:

Completely agree..Way too revealing to come close to being classy. Very inappropriate for Oscar RC.

    • i'm french don't kill me says:

it’s weird because during the french Fashion week,Valentino said he will wear Anne Hathaway at the Oscar show

  2. Aria says:

All of them were stunning!!! +1 to all of them

  3. Faye says:

I love J-Law, but did not like this dress. Thought it looked like a big bedspread or duvet cover. At least a color would have better.

I did have to laugh in sympathy when she fell. I am the biggest klutz, and am constantly tripping over things and falling. That’s so something I would have done. Good for her for recovering so quickly, though.

    • cmc says:

I thought it was funny and she reacted in a way that made her super likeable!

Aside, as I’m not sure where to put this: anyone know why they didn’t include little Q in the Best Actress split-screen? Were Oscars producers just afraid of how she might react?

      • Faye says:

That does seem odd. Maybe there were afraid of her reaction, as you said, given her age. She seems pretty mature, though.

      • littlestar says:

That’s really interesting! I only watched the first hour and a half of the show, so I missed that part. Maybe the Oscar people realized how traumatic it could potentially be for a little girl if she lost, and they wanted to spare her the future embarrassment and humiliation – good for them for doing that, if that’s the case. Do you remember how devastated Haley Joel Osment was when he lost his Oscar? The poor little guy was crying he was so devastated. Not something you want to have history remember as you become a teenager etc.

      • Lou says:

They did include her. The linked video here is just wonky and has cut her off a bit. If you look to the left, you can see her hands clapping on her cam.

If you watch a better quality vid, it does show little Q, and she looks really happy for Jennifer. She’s so adorable! Hope to see her in more stuff.

    • bettyrose says:

ITA – That dress was just not Oscar glam, but when she tripped I thought two things: 1. I bet she regrets that dress now & 2. I bet she’s going to say something funny that’ll be replayed in Oscar flashbacks for years. JLaw 4-ever!

  4. Marta says:

nice looking but best look was Alicia Vikander !! hope she will be together with S.Skarsgard!!!

  5. kaligula says:

Jennifer Lawrence’s dress looked way too bridal, IMO. She could have done much better. Horrible choice. Amanda’s dress is a total snoozefest.

  6. Aiobhan says:

Jennifer’s wedding dress is nice. that is all I got for her.

I hated LM but Samantha was fantastic in it. I think I liked her performance dress a little bit more but she looks great here.

Amanda’s dress is wonderful but she still reminds me of a bowl of oatmeal. Even McQueen cannot give this girl any sort of spark.

    • Rachel says:

Amanda wore a red gown for the Les Mis cast performance. She was stunning. STUNNING. When she stepped on stage, it stole my breath.

JLaw’s dress is just too much for me. It seemed to me like Oscar fashion was just all over the place last night, but I didn’t really understand the whole big ball gown trend.

    • DappaDaph says:

I too hated LM. I fell asleep then I couldn’t full wake up because of all that damn singing. And didnt until I saw Eponine (Samantha) and Marius (Eddie Redmayne). I hope we see more of her.

  7. marie says:

I’m not really a fan of the gown, but Jennifer’s hair and make-up look great.

Both Amanda and Samantha look beautiful.

  8. Shira says:

So, the talk online last night was how it was Jennifer and Bradley’s wedding day.

She did look like a bride, but I loved that dress a lot. So much more than her GG dress which had a similar shape, waist-wise. Jewlery was amazing, as per usual. Chopard again I assume.
Her best look remains that Prabal Gurung STUNNING black dress she wore at the CCA.

I do think however her Calvin Klein after party dress would’ve been better for the ceremony. It was pretty breath taking.

  9. spinner says:

Love Jennifer’s dress. It suits her — but I found myself hoping that the top did not slide down. I suspected that when she fell, her top slid down & that is why it took a bit for her to get back on her feet.

    Love Amanda’s dress too. Beautiful.

  10. Oscar says:

Jennifer Lawrence is really endearing, seemingly genuine, and a quick wit. Appears to see through a lot of the Hollywood fakery. Hoping she stays true to herself and humble in the wake of her Oscar win. Well done!

  11. LadyMTL says:

I thought Jennifer Lawrence’s dress was more of a blush color than white, actually? Whatever it was, I loved it. I think if ever there’s a time to bust out the over the top gowns, it’s at the Oscars.

  12. Lisa says:

I love Jennifer Lawrence and thought she looked great, but I didn’t really like the dress. Too big, too Scarlett O’hara.

  13. bea says:

I said it earlier and I’ll say it again – JLaw’s dress looks like a duvet. A heavy duvet. The strapless top is too low on her torso. Her figure is fantastic and so is her face – I just don’t like that dress.

For me, the best dress is the black Valentino. Her chest looks great in it (whoever she is!) and black works with her skin tone.

Too many of these gals tried to wear pale dresses and most of them looks washed out instead of ethereal…

    • Another Ann says:

      Totally agree on Jen’s dress.

Amanda’s dress was pretty in style, but the color was blah. Fair girls need to wear more color.

Samantha looked great, and I love her necklace.

  14. Mrs.Darcy says:

I think Jen’s dress is appropriately princess-y, she pulls it off because she is a strong bodied woman (No I’m not trying to say she’s “Curvy”) Just if a waif like Siefried had worn it it would have swamped her. A shame about the trip but I’m sure it won’t haunt her for long. I really thought she should have won for Winter’s Bone so glad she won I guess. Her hair and makeup and jewels are lovely. Siefried’s dress is too fussy for my liking but it fits her well. Never seen the Les Mis chick before but she did a nice job of wearing a “Get noticed!” dress while still looking classy, love the pendant.

  15. Hannah says:

    Jennifer’s dress wasn’t white, actually. It’s a pale pink.

  16. Peanut says:

I really thought JLaw’s dress was pale pink and not white?

  17. ernie says:

That’s not white. It’s a very very light pink. I liked it on her, it was her night and that’s how she wore it.

  18. ruby says:

Jennifer – I’m not sure about her dress. It shows off her lovely figure, but I don’t really like the colour. It certainly had a lovely big skirt, very oscarish ! The necklace and styling though are what makes me love her look. Hair and makeup are flawless, the best she’s looked in a long time !

Amanda – She’s so cute 🙂 She looked great, this was a definite win for her. Great dress, hair, makeup.

Samantha – Wow. Understated, doesn’t steal the spotlight and yet very impressive. She really brought it.

  19. Oops says:

about JLaw : the necklace with the top of the dress are not of the most beautiful effect, and yes the dress seems pale pink not white
    I don’t like Amanda’s hair

  20. Arock says:

Loved Amanda red dress in the les mis number, the red was beautiful on her. Jen Lawrence’s dress was not great, but she looked gorgeous. Samantha’s dress suited her proportionately, but that green frock she was in for the ensemble part was awful. Her head looked huge.

  21. freya says:

I actually liked the metallic dress Jennifer wore at the afterparties better than this one. To me, it’s a bit too poufy, and ..bridal, maybe?

  22. L says:

Amanda’s dress was perfection. That pale lavender was stunning on her.

I though JLaw’s dress was a pale pink at the bottom? Regardless, I though the skirt was way to much (she took over 3 seats when she sat down, you could see her from stage), and the bodice to low. It was just a okay dress. Her hair, makeup and jewelry? PERFECTION.

I thought Samantha Barks did look trashy when she moved in that dress. It needed to be a inch higher and with a less wide V. Her stage performance dress was better, and damn can that girl project well. Her singing was the best out of that whole group.

  23. Amy says:

I guess no one noticed Amanda’s dress was so tight it made her look like she had back fat. She is so thin and it was disappointing to me that every time she turned around I thought, someone should have let that dress out a little.

I thought Jlaw looked beautiful and I am glad she won! Loved loved loved the necklace!

    • TheOriginalTiffany says:

I did. I thought it was an old lady behind Seacrest because of the weird back roll. Her arm is covering it in this photo.

  24. sally says:

Did anyone else notice Hugh Jackman ran up to help JLaw? Always a gentleman!

  25. Melissa says:

I loved JenLaw’s dress. IT was her princess moment. Why not?

  26. Deb says:

JLaw looked flawless. Nothing more need be said.

  27. Dirtnap says:

So many pale frocks on pale women. Grown women wearing Easter colors for evening events just leaves me shaking my head.

  28. mel says:

This looks like her Globes dress but more boring

  29. Olivia says:

I hate to say it, because I love her and felt so bad when she tripped, but her dress looked LOVELY on the stairs. It looked kind of average and bridal otherwise, but that train looked gorgeous in that moment. Silver lining?

  30. ataylor says:

The first thing that came to my mind when I saw the dress was…wow, nice wedding dress…then I noticed it was the Oscar red carpet. She looked great…for a bride. Not an Academy Award winner dress IMHO. If she wanted a poufy ball gown she should have looked at Penelope Cruz for inspiration.

  31. CC says:

Just continues the trend of winning actresses in these bridal-y gowns. It’s the Oscars, doesn’t really matter, it’s all about the ceremony, not how fashion-forward is the gown.

  32. tabby says:

Don’t understand why all the pale skin actresses decide to wear such light pale color dresses. I would of loved to see some bright colors on them. But I think Amanda looks pretty. Nothing to say about Jennifer dress.

  33. Jackie Jormp Jomp (formerly Zelda) says:

    Isn’t Lawrence’s dress soft pink???

In any case, looking at a closeup of the fabric, I betting it’s one of those that looks much more interesting in person than on tv. That seems surpringly frothy, for brocade–or it’s not brocade.

  34. Nicolette says:

Jen’s dress was too much material, too heavy. Again another bust line that looked like it was about to slide down. What’s with that? Can’t they make a strapless couture gown that fits right? And though I feel for her falling down, and how embarrassed she may have felt, it also once again just made her come across as that girl next door and not some snotty actress if that makes sense. Congrats Jen!

  35. Isa says:

Falling would be my worst nightmare. I’m mortified for her! I hope she isn’t reliving that moment like I would be. It’s really not a big deal, but I’d still be super embarrassed. I hope she isn’t!

  36. i'm french don't kill me says:

my boyfriend thought JLaw’s dress was made of toilet paper

  37. lucy2 says:

I liked the top half, but not the big skirt. Big skirt didn’t like her either, apparently. At least she caught herself and didn’t face plant, and I loved her response when she began her speech.
Amanda’s is pretty, but I liked the red she wore to sing better.
Samantha’s is bordering on too low cut for me, but then I saw Brandi’s, and it made this look demure. Samantha looked great on stage too. She has the tiniest waist! I noticed it during the movie as well.

  38. Emma says:

Don’t care about any of them, just had to comment on how big Samantha Barks head looks. She could play the red queen without the CGI.

  39. andrea says:

Apart from being ecstatic that she won almost everything, I bet Jennifer is also very relieved awards season is over. That fall really is the worst case scenario. We’ve seen a few women wobble, trip a little, get caught pulling on a wedgie (love you Meryl), but when was the last time a Best Actress all but did a face plant on the stage stairs of the Oscars? I doubt we’ll see her in a poofy dress again next year, or maybe ever.

  40. anna says:

I didn’t like Jennifer’s oscar gown but the metalic vanity fair’s dress is STUNNING. loved it

  41. elola says:

She really did look beautiful when she fell though, the way her back curved and the way the dress was spread across the stairs – she looked like Cinderella! Has anyone noticed the weight she seems to have lost – I noticed it in yesterdays post that she’s looking more bony

    • Nina says:

She lost a lot of weight. She looks great and less puffy but hope she isn’t going the anorexic actress route.

  42. s says:

all 3 looked amazing, i thought JLaw looked incredible, and amanda’s dress was beautiful!

  43. aud says:

    I don’t knoe how I feel about jennifer’s dress.

Hair and make up are gorgeous. Jewellery perfectly compliments the look. But the dress is just so big. I like the pale pink and texture. I’m just gonna view it from the waist up and say I like it

I wish Samantha wore a different necklace. Otherwise, she looked lovely.

  44. flutters says:

Amanda Seyfried nailed it from dress to hair to makeup, Jennifer Lawrence’s hair & makeup were perfection, and Samantha Barks also wore a great dress with great hair and makeup.

However, I hate how sickly thin Samantha Barks looked. It distracted me and I’d like to see her with a few more pounds on her.

  45. Nicolette says:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u3uyuYX1Iyk&feature=player_embedded

Just great, Jen at her no nonsense self. Loved her puzzled look when asked about the ‘process’ of getting ready, where she included taking a shower and then apologizes to the interviewer saying she just did a shot. Or what went through her mind when she fell, she answers ‘a bad word that starts with S’. Love her.

  46. RHONYC says:

    boring.

    is that her boyfriend?
    ew, old. 😯

  47. lucy2 says:

Just saw the metallic after party dress – I like it. But I can see why she went princess for the ceremony.

  48. Linnythepooh says:

Sorry, to me the dress looks like a bed spread. My grandmother used to have one quite similar.

  49. Abby says:

Freaking LOVE jlaw’s dress. Actually love all the dresses in this post.

Also, watched les mis and the whole time Samantha was on camera, all I noticed was her incredible tiny waist. It doesn’t match her! Noticed it last night too.

  50. Sal says:

Did anyone see Jennifer Lawrence FLIPPING OFF the press room?! Are you SERIOUS?! Yeah, no. Officially can’t stand her.

    • Jackson says:

I saw a bit of her press room Q&A and, honestly, wasn’t liking the vibe she was giving off. IDK what the middle finger thing was about. I’ll cut her some slack because she just won an Oscar but, yeah, maybe try to be more moment-appropriate.

      • Mila says:

She didn’t flipped anyone off. Watched the clip, she was just flustered and moved her hands a lot. She is very humble. Calm down caps lock!

    • sal says:

Uh, yes. She totally flipped the bird. It wasn’t a “flustered” hand gesture.

      • MisJes says:

For goodness sake, she was having a laugh with the reporters! What a ridiculous thing to be up in a huff about.

    • sal says:

Yeah, because flipping the bird after winning a prestigious award is okay, duh.

      • MisJes says:

She did not take the stage and proceed to flip the crowd.

She was laughing and cracking jokes, and the video clearly shows this banter between her and the reporters in the press room. It was all in good fun, and given that the girl just won an Oscar and was clearly ecstatic – I think she can be forgiven her over-excitement.

    • sal says:

I didn’t say she “proceed[ed] to flip the crowd.” I think most can agree that flipping the bird is tacky, no matter how “excited” you are.

  51. Jackson says:

I guess I like JL’s dress. It does look rather bridal, however. IDK, I love me my ball gowns, lol, but this could have been a little less poufy, a little less bridal. Nice though. And I believe the dress is both pale pink AND white. If you look at the top pic, the top tier of the back of the skirt is white while the rest of the dress is blush. I think, lol.
ETA: Yeah, two-tone. The top about 1-inch band on the bodice is also white.

  52. Miss M says:

Michael K has a photo of JL giving her middle finger. Please JL, cut it out the KStew vibe! 🙂

  53. Patrice says:

Much like with Anne Hathaway, I’m happy that Jennifer won the Oscar but NOT because I think she deserved it for this particular role-I feel that she was completely robbed of the award for ‘Winter’s Bone’ so if she had to win it now, eh, so be it 🙂

Side note: I absolutely loved her and Amy Adams gowns 😀 I was thrilled to see a few ladies go all out with huge poufy gowns! I mean, if you can’t do it at the Oscars…

P.S. All that being said, was anyone else totally floored that Amy didn’t win for ‘The Master’? Hell, girlfriend could have won just from that brief clip they showed when introducing the nominees! Sigh. She’s a total powerhouse so I’m confident that she’ll win soon either way. If not, then the Academy is even crazier than I thought (I’m still reeling a little over War Horse getting completely snubbed last year).

    • Mazunte says:

I’d like Amy Adams to win soon too. I have not seen the Master yet, but I have her seen her in a few films and I find her a terrific actress. Plus, I absolutely loved her princess dress yesterday. It was my favorite.

JL’s dress looked like whipped cream, but it was a pretty dress. The back was gorgeous.

  54. Janet says:

I liked Lawrence’s dress from the front but it was too big and poufy in the back. Love the back necklace.

  55. palermo says:

She looked gorgeous, loved the dress

  56. Memphis says:

I Loved Jennifer’s back necklace and her makeup and hair looked amazing!! That being said, the dress wasn’t great..

I went back and forth on how I felt about it but in the end it had a bedspread look to it and just didn’t have that “Oscar” feel.

  57. Elly says:

    beautiful dress… for a wedding! It´s a bridal gown.

    The necklace is fantastic.

  58. Ms Kay says:

A giant bed spread, I could survive the cold winter sleeping underneath that bed spread dress!

And the whole flipping the bird in the press room, I don’t agree at all….

  59. I Choose Me says:

I came here to comment on the gowns but got distracted by that gorgeous necklace around Samantha’s neck. I need that necklace in my life!!

ETA: Wonder what that whole middle finger was about? I think I read that it was not done on purpose. But you know what even if she did do it on purpose I’ll still like her. 🙂

  60. StaCat1 says:

I thought Jennifer looked amazing. Samantha’s was a bit too much in the cleavage dept (not as bad as Klum) but I am getting sick of the deep cut necklines…too much, imo.
Amanda’s looked pretty but she didn’t stand out.

Jennifer’s fall and her subsequent recovery were endearing. She is a great reminder how fluffy and silly all of it is YET she is very humble about how lucky she is to play in that world. I like that she is not so media ready and raw. She is the anti-hathaway.

  61. Grant says:

I also loved the boobilicious red Calvin Klein number she wore for her Winter’s Bone nomination. I read somewhere that she was afraid she looked too much like a bombshell though and that’s why she’s undergone this style shift. Personally, I don’t see why she can’t be smoking hot and talented at the same time…

  62. Luxe says:

She is gorgeous! I liked the dress. I liked the CK one from two years ago but I think this dress and hair and make-up was a great look for her win. I think I remember reading back during Hunger Games press about how she was working on some of the “Hollywood” stuff because it isn’t really her so this dress is not surprising to me. I love that she took her fall in stride. Can you imagine if it was Hathaway?!

  63. Diana says:

When I saw J-Law’s dress on tv last night, I thought, bridal! but in the pictures it looks more like a blush color which is really nice. She looked stunning. Beautiful dress thought undeserved winning. Amanda’s dress was pretty but the halter didn’t quite fit while in motion and I did not liked that. Samantha Barks shined last night; what a talented young woman.

  64. dcypher1 says:

I think j law looks georgeous and I did like her dress but from behind it did look like she was wearing a big bed comforter.

  65. orion70 says:

I actually like JL, but part of me couldn’t help but think when she fell “ok, we get it, you’re awkward”.

  66. A Fan says:

Samantha Barks – wow, that’s some serious sex appeal…

*can you slide some of that over to Amanda Seyfried*

  67. Caroline says:

I don’t like Jennifer’s gown at all. So bridal. So super awkward.
Amanda look super cute, the red gown she wore while singing was gorge as well~

  68. I think that Naomi Watts absolutely killed it with her dress. Perfection. Not getting what wasn’t to love about it. I liked, Zoe Saldana and Nicole Kidmans dresses but in my opinion it was definitely Naomi. I also loved how Kristin Stewart was a hot mess, and Jennifer Lawrence looked great even falling over.

  69. emma says:

Amanda was so awkward in her interview with Kristin Chenoweth on the red carpet. It was hard to watch. And all she did was complain about her custom made dress. Barf.
