In India everything is labor-intensive because there are too many people for too few jobs. Also "madam" and "sir" is how they call everyone - even the taxi driver will call a female passenger madam. So the Mumbai servant story is nothing scandalous at all. It’s not at all uncommon to have servants in India - or in developing countries where there is an oversupply of labor for that matter.
