Miley Cyrus added a blue tint to her platinum hair: cute or attention seeking?

Miley Cyrus

Here are some new photos of Miley Cyrus with blue-tinged hair that she probably paid hundreds (if not thousands) of dollars for when it truly looks like she dip-dyed her platinum locks in window cleaner. Regardless of quality, Miley’s rocking those locks and still steadily ignoring the rumors that something happened between Liam Hemsworth and January Jones after they were photographed hopping into the same waiting car after a pre-Oscar party and even kissed in the middle of that party. Further, Miley allegedly was act[ing] single the next night at Elton John’s party.

Miley Cyrus

To her credit, Miley doesn’t appear to have had a public meltdown over this scandal even though she allegedly tweeted and deleted some drama, and she’s tweeting again now but only about her awesome new album. Oh, and Miley’s wearing her engagement ring in these photos, but that doesn’t mean anything at all in my book. If I were famous and just broke up with my fiancé and didn’t want anyone to know about it until I had a chance to get over it, I’d still keep wearing my ring too. Of course, I think this ring is hideous, but that’s beside the point.

Miley Cyrus

So what, if anything, should we make of Miley’s new hair tint? Is she acting out over Liam’s alleged wandering eye (and mouth), or did she just feel like mixing it up? Maybe she’s just trying to switch the focus back to her hair, which is a tactic that usually works.

A part of me wants to defend her for experimenting and having fun at a young age, but another part of me is like oh honey no.

    • TheOriginalKitten says:

Eh…pastel colored hair is really in right now. I think she’s just being trendy.

      • Green_Eyes says:

        Everything they just said +1

      • Rose says:

It’s a little too grey to be pastel really. This look is more 12 year old who dyed her hair with Kool Aid than trendy Fashionista.

    • Lisa says:

I love good gossips, stories, and celebrity dirt and I feel sorry for myself! Damn I miss the ’90 and the early ’00. Everything is so transparent and calculated today. It’s not even fun. Miley and her stupid hair?! Biber’s pants?! Please!!!!

      • Mitch Buchanan Rocks! says:

The gossip magazines of the eighties were fabulously entertaining as well – it would be interesting if this site could do a story or two on some vintage enquirer or star articles.

    • Tiffany says:

I am not a fan of this particular hair color, but that being said, I think it is better than the yellow blonde she was doing earlier. I think her short hair could be even more striking if she kept it brown. I think it could frame her face in a really flattering way.

  2. Talie says:

It looks like she has grey hair… I don’t know, to me, she looks sickly. And I agree, who would ever want a yellow gold engagement ring?

    • Belle says:

I don’t think the comment in the story was a knock on yellow gold engagement rings, but on the style of the ring. Many people wear and love yellow gold.

I have two wedding ring sets, the first is yellow gold, and my husband picked it himself… I was wearing yellow gold jewelry at the time, and that is what he chose. I wore it happily for many years, and would still be wearing it if I hadn’t received a family diamond that I opted to have set in a white gold setting that I really loved. I really didn’t intend to wear it is my wedding ring at first… but my husband knew I really loved it, and ended up going back and buying the diamond wedding bad that went with it, so I could wear it as my wedding set if I wanted to, while I’m in my white gold/silver/platinum ‘era’ 😉

I will wear my yellow gold set again when I go back to a yellow gold jewelry phase. Suggesting something is wrong with yellow gold wedding rings is kind of rude.

    • DeltaJuliet says:

I have a yellow gold wedding set. A lot of people had them before platinum became the only metal you were allowed to wear.

    • lilred1 says:

Many people would not only want to wear a yellow gold wedding band/engagement ring, but also do it proudly.

    • paranormalgirl says:

My wedding set was yellow gold. *shrugs*

    • EmmaStoneWannabe says:

Poor thing. Not a cute look. She kinda reminds me of an anime’ character here..ughh

    • emmie_a says:

I would want a yellow gold engagement ring…

And I want that garage or parking space that has those red flowers growing all over it – that’s gorgeous!

      • AnnieN says:

        @emmie_a

That’s a Bougainvillea, they come as a plant, bush, tree, etc. and grow in warm weather.

      • iheartjacksparrow says:

As Jack Skellington, I mean emmie_a, says, they are bougainvillea. They are also what is commonly known as “invasive,” and one plant has taken over a large portion of my back yard. And worst of all, you need to wear full body armor when near them as they have these massive spikes that just love to stab a person if they aren’t careful. But they are beautiful.

    • Ok says:

Don’t be disrespecting yellow gold. People who look good in warm tones usually go for yellow gold. Ain’t nothin wrong with yellow gold young lady.

    • Erinn says:

Hey now, I specifically stressed to my fiance that I wanted a yellow gold engagement ring. I like it better. And it’s beautiful. I’m sick of the white gold and platinum trend. Yellow gold is classic, and I looove my ring, and love the fact that it doesn’t look like every other ring that women are wearing.

    • Jay says:

Uh…a lot of people? I specifically want a sapphire set in yellow gold. I don’t like diamonds and I don’t like white gold or platinum.

    • Ginger says:

My set is white gold because that’s what I prefer…who cares about trends? A wedding set is special and should be more about the bride than a trend.

  3. Nina W says:

Reminds me of Kelly Osbourne, a horrible attention getting color that does her no favors.

    • Jenni says:

I agree, I like how classic yellow gold is, i don’t have allergic reactions to it like I do with some white gold, and how it looks with my skin tone. My husband had to get my ring custom made because it was that hard to find the style he knew I liked in the metal he knew I wanted. I appreciate the effort. I am firmly pro yellow gold.

  4. JH says:

She’s a hot mess. She is working really hard at making herself unattractive.

  5. Jill says:

    It looks like chlorine.

  6. lady mary. says:

Those flowers are really gorgeous in the background ,erm,, my gran had the same hair sometime back ,that was bfore she saw THE QUEEN MOTHER’s hairstyle was no more in vogue

  7. Itsa Reallyme says:

Everything she does is attention seeking. This girl has problems galore.

    • blaize says:

All pop stars do things for attention. It doesn’t mean they’re damaged, it’s just that this type of career depends on attention, so calling them attention seekers is kind of redundant. She’s having fun and getting it out of her system while she’s young while simultaneously doing what the celebs do.

      • Liv says:

I disagree. There are celebs who seek attention and call the paps and there are celebs who live a relatively quite life. Depends on how you want to live your life.

  8. ladybert62 says:

    Looks better without the tint.

  9. vvvoid says:

I like it. I wouldn’t do it myself at 27, and probably not past 17, but I like it. What I LOVE is that outfit. The pants could be cut a bit thinner but the outfit is overall awesome.
I have been stuck in the 90’s since the 90’s though. I never moved past grunge.

    • krmoore says:

Vvvoid, am I reading right that you are 27? How could you be stuck in the 90’s you were born 1986? Are you still dressing as a 10yr old? Sorry don’t mean to be rude but liking an era or style of clothing is one thing but to say you never got past grunge when you were 6 years old at the height of it is just ridiculous.

      • LIVEALOT says:

if as a youngster she looked up to the teens and young adults during the 90s, i can see her pulling off the same looks once she becomes a young adult herself… i get it

      • vvvoid says:

Yeah, I was always looking up to the older kids back then, and became really nostalgic about the 90’s around 99/00 when I became obsessed with Nirvana, and I never moved on from that.
I remember crying when I realized it had already been 6 years since Kurt’s death and that we were in a new decade, I wanted time to just stop. Now it’s been 19 years and I’m still not really over it, lol. I get kind of resentful about the fact that the 90’s are “retro” now but at least that means I’m able to find clothes outside of thrift shops that match my personal style finally.

      • vvvoid says:

Also, what I meant to convey was that I was wearing grunge style clothing before it was the thing to do again. You know how things aren’t “cool” to wear again until about 15 years after they went out of style? I see Jncos and elephant pants making a comeback in about 5 years unfortunately.

  10. hello says:

she tweeted saying she used too much purple shampoo while toning her hair, she didn’t actually dye it it’ll fade out within a few washes

    • MorticiansDoItDeader says:

That sounds like total BS. I’ve left purple shampoo in for close to an hour and my hair never turned dark cotton candy blue. The only time my hair pulled this shade was when I didn’t leave the manic panic in for long enough.
Maybe she was trying to be “rebel Miley,” and dye her own ‘do? And it turned out sh*tty. She probably hates it and doesn’t want to own up to screwing up her hair when she can pay the money to have a professional do it.

      • G. says:

Yeah, definitely looks like a bad manic panic application. As someone who had a few bouts with bad dye jobs, just own it, Miley. And don’t use manic panic next time, because it’s a terrible dye.

      • Snowpea says:

        Hey Morticians…aint true.

I have very fine, naturally white blonde and I have put that toning shampoo in for an hour or more and it went a very classy granny purple rinse colour.

I mean, after a couple of weeks it had gone back to normal but she may well be telling the truth here.

    • Pop! says:

I also call shenanigans. Mort, i too kept that purple shampoo in my hair for an hour plus to get rid of brassiness when i was platinum after my black+blond+hotpink era ended. I never hour blue hair. It would actually turn grey/green because that’s what purple based things aim for to cancel brassiness out. She just wants to seem cool but it looks sad. Just admit you dyed it blue and it think sucks, miley, not play it off a an accident because it wasnt.

      • Jenni says:

My ends used to turn ever so slightly lavender, but that’s about it.

      • MorticiansDoItDeader says:

@snowpea, you’re a natural blonde, I’m not and neither is Miley. Chemicals act differently on color treated hair. Furthermore, this looks like blue hair dye that wasn’t left in long enough (not purple). I suppose you think she was telling the truth about the pot smoking photo too (when you could clearly see her equality tattoo)?

      • Snowpea says:

Ha ha Morticians, very true re: the natural vs chemically coloured hair!

As for the tattoo thing you refer to…I haven’t gotta clue what that’s about. But since I’ve got a soft spot for Miley, I’d probably side with her on that too 😉

      • Lucrezia says:

I was willing to believe Miley because I once accidently tinted a grey horse blue. (I only left it on for 10 minutes, but it was undiluted laundry-bluing rather than a pre-mixed toner-shampoo … I think I must have screwed up the dilution.)

However, the horse wasn’t a bleach-blonde (duh!), so perhaps that’s another one for the “natural and dyed hair react differently” theory.

  11. RobN says:

At 21 it’s cute and fun. At 31 it’s desperate and sad.

  12. Mia 4S says:

Miley attention seeking? No way! I’m shocked! 😉

I do feel a bit badly for her but maybe it’s a good future lesson not to be so public with her personal life. If they have already broken up I am bit surprised we haven’t heard it from his team. If they were no longer together when this all went down, that’s one thing (too soon maybe but not that big a deal). Cheating? That’s another thing entirely.

  13. Syko says:

My hair is that color, but it’s due to being old. I am not fond of it, and can not imagine TRYING to make your hair that color.

  14. bettyrose says:

LOL! Grandma, is that you?? I guess Miley thought we were saying too many nice things about her and needed to turn it up a notch.

  15. PinkG says:

Miley who??? I am too distracted by Liev Schreiber’s bare chest.

  16. Jackie Jormp Jomp (formerly Zelda) says:

    She looks puffy and tired.

  17. fabgrrl says:

Oh course she is seeking attention, she is 20! I can think of a dozen girls from college who did just this (and I may have been one of them).

  18. Dawn says:

Oh I love her outfit! What a great look for a young person who has a great body! I don’t find this to be attention seeking at all, I think that is reserved for KK and only KK. Mily is cute and young and having fun. Leave her to it.

  19. Jane says:

Eh, pastel hair is a trend now, plus Kelly Osbourne is one of her good friends.

    • bettyrose says:

I’m all about trend-setting hairstyles, but she looks like an elderly widow in Boca Raton who’s back on the singles scene.

  20. j.eyre says:

Maybe it’s her ‘something blue’ for the wedding?

  21. Willa says:

To the outfit, hair, lip color, and face expression. She looks crappy. Sorry.

  22. Thinker says:

Isn’t the whole point of the short hair to get rid of all the damaged over processed gunk that she was carrying around on her head???

… Platinum bleach plus dye is not a good idea on the road to a healthy head of hair, regardless of whether the hair is long or short. Just a pet peeve of mine, when someone pontificates about the merits of an extremist lifestyle (gluten free, pilates twice a day, raw vegan) while hypocritically engaging in unhealthy habits. Him, Isn’t Miley a gluten free raw vegan who smokes ciggies ?

The hair is a phase. I had it too. Wearing her hair in such a way is a hard and self assured thing to do though because as a tween/teen girl hair is very much linked to feminity and attractiveness. She is trying to shed the identities that have been imposed on her and experiment to find herself. Honestly, if they aren’t split up yet they will be. This is the hair of a young woman needing an independent time to grow. Think of the hair as a metaphor for her personhood.

    • Emily says:

I’ve actually thought of this. Having been sexualized at a fairly young age by her creepy dad/manager, maybe the new punky look is a way for her to reclaim her identity and her sexuality.

Miley can be kind of annoying and hypocritical and attention-seeking at times (who isn’t at that age), but I do think that she’s honestly trying to find herself and pave her own way. I’m definitely a Miley apologist. Rock on gurl!!!!

  23. paranormalgirl says:

I had hair every color of the rainbow in my youth. I can think of worse and more destructive things to do.

  24. Elceibeno says:

The silver does not look good on her.

  25. Katie says:

WHY? Her hair was looking amazing a few days ago! I swear every time I start to like a celebs hair they change it! LMAO! I don’t like the blue tint really! Maybe if it wasn’t so faded it’d look better! 🙂

  26. EmmaStoneWannabe says:

Maybe she’s pissed Charlize ‘stole’ her look ..lulz

  27. Pale fire says:

Meh she’s just copying a style that was all around Brooklyn a few years ago. It now is going to be trendy and available in reproduction @ malls everywhere. See Becka Diamond Pixie and Peaches Geldolf…around 2009-2011 Basically was recycled grungy style that’s becoming trendy now.

    • bettyrose says:

Uh, by Brooklyn you mean Brighton Beach, right? Cuz, uh, any Williamsburg hipster sporting that hairstyle is just practicing for retirement.

  28. Reece says:

    Cute.
She is really trying to bring back the early 90’s isn’t she? haha

  29. KellyinSeattle says:

I’m calling her on her pass for being “young and experimenting”. She’s not in high school anymore. We jump on Taylor for acting like a high schooler, which is what Miley does….and I think of our soldiers (sorry, I don’t mean to get political)…we have 21 year olds defending out country; but everything Miley does is okay because she’s young? I think not…she drives me to drink but I actually like her hair. Cheers!

    • blaize says:

A soldier is put in a life and death situation, for them being more serious for their age is more expected (not that they’re all that squeaky clean either. I’ve heard about the language, the underage drinking, and pot stories from a few people who used to be in the war) Miley Cyrus and Taylor Swift are just pop stars, so I don’t really expect then to be as serious as soldiers. I don’t see the harm in what they’re doing. They can be serious when they’re middle aged mothers. What’s the harm with experimenting with weird or cartoonish looks? It’s not like they’re lawyers. I say we all do as we please with our appearances, as the sole autonomous owners of our bodies.

  30. The Original G says:

    She looks adorable.

Yellow gold is coming back and piss off to all who feel the need to turn their noses up at it.

    • Belle says:

I would venture so far as to say it never left. Yes, platinum and white gold have really been popular, but I don’t think yellow gold was or will ever be ‘out of style’.

I’ve been in a silver metal jewelry phase for a while now, but have a lot of gold as well, and will certainly return to it 😉

  31. Marty says:

I dunno, maybe they haven’t broken up but there sure seems to be problems. I really think if she was ok she would be doing major photo-oping with Liam. Eh young drama, who hasn’t been there?

  32. Madpoe says:

A smurf peed in her hair WTH?

  33. april says:

Ick. She looks 50+. The color and cut are both awful.

  34. Jane says:

Did Kelly Osbourne help dye her hair?

  35. Ayda says:

    ugly beyond words..

  36. andrea says:

It probably looks better in person, but a light blue dye job on top of bleach blonde hair just looks gray on camera.

When I was in high school, I used to get my hair cut every time I had a personal problem. In my junior year, my hair went from elbow-length to above my ears over 5 installments in 10 months. So I think I get why she messes with her hair.

From experience, I really think it would be better though if she dealt with the issues straight on instead of taking it out on her body. She may want to start with her f*cked up family.

As for Liam, they’ve screwed around on each other before. It seems she’s gotten him caught up in a maze of her personal/family issues that he may not be prepared for. Might be good for them to take a step back and reevaluate.

  37. bored_01 says:

    love her hair.

  38. Jayna says:

Usually young is when you can really rock short hair, but nope on Miley. She has kind of a doughy face, no bone structure. I just saw Something About Mary and Cameron Diaz was just flat out adorable with her very short blunt cut. Plus such a tall, lithe figure. So cute. Fast forward to almost 40 and she did a blunt cut short and not as flattering. No one really liked it on her older, sun lined face.

  39. Snowpea says:

I love this girl. She’s just a kid, finding her way. And I LOVE the far she’s not doing the whole gross hair extensions a la Lohan.

She’s young, fresh, cute and adorably transparent. Give the poor girl a break.

  40. skuddles says:

Much as I ove a good rhetorical question, this is Miley we’re talking about – of course she did it for attention. Which is normal for someone her age, but the grey really does look like shit.

  41. I.want.shoes says:

I prefer it to the platinum blond. It’s less Susan Powers/Roxette

  42. Lux says:

When I was her age I cut my hair into a posh spice bob with bangs. Looking back on it, I cringe but it was just a phase. So I don’t see much problem with her hair. She’s just being young. She’s a lot more stable than most child stars TBH.

  43. silver says:

she looks so much like her mom in that second pic.

whatever, she’s young, let her mess around with her hair. it’s not like she had to look nice & proper to go on job interviews…

  44. babyturnsblue says:

Hate her hair, hate her music, hate her high wasted shorts and pants. She completely stole P!nks hairstyle when she came out with this platinum crop at some music award show.

She can dress as slutty as she wants and she can experiment as much as she wants but she’s always going to be the cheesy daughter of a cheesy country singer.

    • silver says:

so harsh!…and all true. I love it.

    • blaize says:

That savors of bitterness! Why do you feel the need to begrudge some young stranger having fun? Are you repressed?

      • Babyturnsblue says:

Ha ha. No, I am not repressed. I just think that she is trying way too hard and comes across as a cheeseball.

  45. Leni says:

If I were in my twenties and had money I would be trying things out left and center whether anyone else was paying attention or not. Actually I still would be! Good for her that she is not scared to try stuff.

  46. Lisa says:

When I had bleached blonde hair I would go in to get it toned (not terribly expensive BTW) when my hair started to turn a little too yellow.

If you’ve ever had your blonde hair toned by a professional then you would know that you can come out of the salon looking like you have gray/blue tinged/ashy hair. This eventually fades after several washes and you’re back to your nice bring blonde, which eventually turns yellow and then you repeat the process.

So… don’t freak out. This is standard.

  47. WM says:

At this point, I think she is just F’ing with Liam. “Don’t like my hair? I LOVE it – I think I’ll dye it pastel blue! How do you like it now?”

  48. mugsy says:

AWWWW just like Justin da baby wants some attention cause their fan base is dwindling!

  49. FrenchT says:

Oh I see. It is ok to knock her hair color but not the color of her ring (or other people’s rings). Got it.

  50. Sarah says:

The hair is okay. But the shoes are hideous!

Onto the topic of alleged break up.. I think she is trying to deal with her relationship in a very adult way. And she’s wearing the ring maybe to keeping gossip down. She’s tweeting, she will know exactly what taking the ring off will mean. And I do think she is way much more steady on her relationships at that age as – let’s say – TAYLOR SWIFT!! By statistics, in the last 3 years, she had every seven weeks a new guy while Miley stayed with Liam all the time. Just saying…

  51. Carolyn says:

Miley & Liam looked really happy about a year or so ago. I suspect the gloss has gone off the relationship.

No way a marriage is going to happen.

She looks awful. I get she going through a “rebellious” stage LOL.

  52. Sparkly says:

My first thought was that maybe there’s something to the Liam rumors. Lots of ladies tend to switch up the hair when there’s troubles/breakups.

I actually like the pastel hair thing that’s going on right now, but this doesn’t look good on Miley at all.
