Michael Cera the hold-out for Arrested Development movie?

arrested1
There have been rumors for some time that Michael Cera and/or Will Arnett are hesitant to get on board for an Arrested Development movie. Mitch Hurwitz, the creator of Arrested Development, may have revealed that Cera is the hold out by saying that Will Arnett is ready to go:

“I don’t want to talk about who is holding out right now because we might still work that out and I don’t want to pressure anyone through the press,” said Hurwitz. “Although I will say that Will Arnett is gung-ho, so there’s a big clue!”

So what you mean to say, Mitch, is that it’s Michael Cera’s fault.  Even if you sugared it up with that “I don’t want to pressure anyone” statement.  There is, of course, the off-chance that it’s someone else who’s refusing to sign, but it seems unlikely considering that Cera and Arnett are the only ones whose careers have taken off enough to be able to say “no.”  The movie wouldn’t even be a possibility without Jason Bateman, so he seems to be definitely in.

Another interesting part of Hurwitz’ interview with Fancast is his willingness to discuss the many options for the movie’s direction.  Unlike most producers and directors, who will just say “it’s in its development stage” (sorry for the bad pun), Hurwitz seems interested in sharing the process with his fans.  One possible avenue would be to do a “film within a film”:

There are, of course, other versions in mind. Although many episodes of the series famously ended with never-realized, “Next time on…” teasers, it’s possible that the film could become a “film within a film,” taking a cue from the epilogue of the finale, where Maebe Bluth pitches Ron Howard her life story, and Howard quips “I don’t see it as a series. Maybe a movie.”

“I’ve also been playing with the idea of doing a prequel for a while, which could be kind of interesting,” Hurwitz said.

Whatever he choses to do, and whether or not Michael Cera decides to do the film, it seems that the Bluths are coming to the big screen.  “It’s too much fun for us all,” says Hurwitz. “The fans have been so supportive and so sincere in their fondness for it. That’s really the big motivation to make the film.”

I don’t see Michael Cera getting a better movie offer than this.

  2. evanee says:

I loved Arrested Development but surely it would be easier to simply re-cast the role than try to haggle with some small time juvie starlet.

  3. emneilsen says:

If Michael Cera doesn’t come back then just write out George Michael (which would suck) but I have loved this show since day one and no little goof ball kid better mess up the movie being made.

  4. jennifer says:

You CANNOT replace George Michael! No way. I hope he’s not holding out bcs of ego – not very Canadian of you, Michael! ;0) I cannot wait for this movie. I watch my DVDs over & over. Sucks this show ended so early. :0(

PS I’d certainly say Jason Bateman’s career has taken off as a result of Arrested Development, too – not just Michael Cera & Will *I love you omg I love you* Arnett…. ;0)

emneilsen – I agree – if you can’t get George Michael, say he’s at college & leave it at that :0)

I agree about Michael Cera. Do we really need him? His character’s storyline went on FOREVER anyway. The whole will they/won’t they be kissing cousins, blah blah blah. I love Michael Cera, but he certainly doesn’t make the show.

  6. manda says:

See the crappy thing about him not wanting to do it is his whole bit, the comedic role he plays in movies is George Micheal. He hasnt done anything different since the show ended, he owes it all to that and the fans that followed him from there…I would be very over him if he were the reason it didnt happen

  7. boobaloob says:

Michael Cera is a damn brat, as far as I’m concerned. AD is what brought him stardom in the first place. And, as Manda pointed out earlier, he simply replays the George Michael character in all of his other roles. I think his ego is playing a HUGE role in all of this; I suspect he thinks he’s “too good” to be in a movie based on a TV show. You know, since now he’s clearly A BIG, IMPORTANT STAR. I really hope that they’ll still do the movie if he decides not to be involved. Get over yourself, Michael.

Also, I don’t know if any of you have heard of this guy Aleksey Vayner — he’s a recent Yale grad who made this extremely pompous video resumé and sent it out to some investment banks in search of a job. It got leaked out on the internet, and he’s basically been ridiculed by everyone who’s seen it, as it’s clear from the video that he’s quite a megalomaniac. Anyway, Michael Cera ended up making a parody of the guy’s video and put it on YouTube. So I find it really ironic that Cera is now acting like a pompous ass himself. Pot/Kettle and all of that.

As long we see more of Kitty Sanchez and Liza Minelli, I don’t care if George Michael ever comes back…

  10. mollination says:

Jason Bateman is so yummy. Just cast him and only him in all the roles ala’ Eddie Murphy.

  11. CB Rawks says:

It would suck ASS if they recast the role. That goes for every one of the characters. I don’t think I would even want to see it if some random face popped up claiming to be a Bluth.

  12. Persistent Cat says:

I agree 100% with Manda, I love Michael Cera but can he play anything else but a George Michael type character?

And yes, CB Rawks, it would most definitely suck ASS if they recast him.

I guess my crush on Jason Bateman/Michael Bluth is going to resurface.

  13. CB Rawks says:

    😀 hee

  14. vdantev says:

Yeah, ’cause we all know his career is on the fast track. Not. Maybe one of his other failed sitcoms from the 90’s will make a comeback?

  15. LouRob says:

Easy fix. Just start out with a longshot of George Michael skiing into a tree and requiring extensive plastic surgery.

They could even work it into the plot. The characters would be talking about GM when he’s standing right next to them.

  16. Codzilla says:

    LouRob: Lol! Hilarious.

  17. It’s really selfish of Michael Cera to deny what so many fans have wanted for so many years. The series ended prematurely, and regardless of whether you view that as a good thing or a bad thing, there is still the need for some type of closure. (That, and I need my Buster fix.)

I think LouRob has the right idea. If Cera’s a no-go, rip that sucker out like a scab. I love GM’s contributions, but he certainly never made the scene for me.
