Emma Stone on pressure: ‘I’m not going to try to control what people think of me’

Emma Stone

Emma Stone covers the May issue of Marie Claire Australia to promote her role in The Croods, which features her voicework as a teenage Neanderthal who falls in love with a slightly more evolved humanoid voiced by Ryan Reynolds. It’s a pretty cute movie for very young kids, and voicework is where it’s at these days. Emma looks quite beautiful on this cover even if the styling is a bit bland, but one doesn’t expect dramatic fireworks from Marie Claire. I think Emma’s got the most gorgeous face, she has followed the typical Hollywood starlet routine of losing a fairly drastic amount of weight over the past few years. I suppose almost anyone would cave to the pressure, but I wanted something different for Emma. In this interview, Emma talks about how she doesn’t cave to pressure, which I guess is open to interpretation. Here are some excerpts:

Emma Stone

On the pressure of Hollywood: “For a long time, I didn’t get worried about being boxed in. And then I started thinking about it too much, and then it scared me. And now I’m just trying to let go of it, and realize that whatever my path is going to be, it’s going to be. I’m not going to try to control what people think of me.”

On moving from Los Angeles to New York City: “I really miss my friends in LA a lot and the weather. But my lifestyle is really different in New York. People there work in lots of different industries, whereas in LA everyone is kind of related to entertainment — you know what you’re going to get if you go to that city.”

On her past decade of work: “I don’t regret anything, because everything that I’ve done has got me to where I am now and obviously it couldn’t have been any other way, and it wasn’t any other way. That’s how it happened. So I don’t regret a thing, but I’ve learned. And now I’m trying to grow.”

I must admit that I’m a little bit worried about Emma’s career after her leading lady turn in Gangster Squad wasn’t met with audience enthusiasm (not really her fault because the movie as a whole received poor reviews) even though she has the next Spider Man movie to pad her wallet for awhile. Oh, and she’s still a spokesmodel for Revlon, so I guess she’ll be fine. I do think that her geeky appeal wore thin after awhile, and she sounds like she got tired of playing the girl that always ends up making out with the dork in countless movies. Can’t say I blame her for that one.

Here’s some photos of Emma on the set of The Amazing Spider Man 2 in March.

She is so shapeless these days, wow. Which would be fine of that was her body type, but she used to be different. how disappointing.

  2. Caroline says:

    She looks hungry 🙁

  3. kingkayski says:

She’s just skin and bones, nothings appealing about her anymore ,her geeky appeal is gone long time ago together with her much needed weight ,she really went overboard with the weight trend of hollywood.

  4. Annie says:

Does anyone else feel like she’s cracking under pressure? She’s lost so much weight that I worry. This is almost at a Nicole/Lindsay level.
I honestly don’t believe producers ask these women to lose the weight. There’s definitely a range of bodies there. Not everybody is skinny. I think those who do lose weight are in competition with each other and do it because other actresses are doing it and not because they are being told.

She is working a lot. She needs a break.

Seeing yourself on TV and photo shoots is hard…plus how much their bodies play into their careers which can potentially make millions…so its like hmmm if I just lose 15 more lbs I will look hot on camera all the time and increase my work/publicity???….I doubt the girls are going to hold onto the weight for long…

    • Maria says:

some women have said it, there are some douchebags but the worst are the female writers in fashion magazine and gossip magazines that call women fat or publish unflattering pictures from the beach.

      • Annie says:

Skinny can be very unflattering too. Some women look awful when skinny, and that’s because it’s not natural on them. Imagine a skinny Kate Winslet. It’s not for everybody. I wish more women realized that.

At the end of the day, losing so much weight always goes beyond trying to look good. When you lose too much weight there’s an underlying issue that is making you punish yourself with starvation. That’s the bottomline of all eating disorders. It’s never only about the pressures of looking good. It only starts that way.

    • Tiffany :) says:

Samantha Morton was supposed to be in Brothers Grimm with Matt Damon, but Harvey Weinstein pressured the director to replace her because her upper arm area was deemed too large.

Yes, producers DO pressure female stars about their weight on a regular basis.

I did not realize she’s been making movies for a decade.. that makes me feel old, BOOOO

she’d look cute with a bob cut.

  6. nofkksgiven says:

She looks very thin but whatever her body her choice…I like those boots! I wish I could get a designer ID on those for next fall…*sigh*

    • Lauren says:

Ditto! I need the boots like NOW! I think I’ve seen them before on Angelina Jolie and Zoe Saldana, but I can’t be sure.

    • 007141 says:

these are 50/50 stuart weitzman boots i believe. steve madden has similar ones but less expensive.

  7. Talie says:

I think her makeover into a typical blonde starlet hurt her a little. She should take note of Jessica Chastain who hasn’t drastically altered her appearance unless it’s for a film.

I think everyone needs to go back and watch Easy A. Her break out movie, right? She is teensy tinesy there. She might have lost a little more weight but she seems like one of those naturally teensy tinesy people we all are envious of. And can wear a strange purple outfit (?) and totally rock it…

She looks gorgeous in the photos above but then the sun did come up again today as well…

    • Annie says:

Her breakout movie was Superbad and she looks nothing like that anymore. And while she’s always been petite, she’s never looked unhealthy… Until now. Her legs are incredibly thin, they look like they could snap. As a naturally skinny person, I can tell you that even if you’re skinny, there’s always areas where you store more weight that show your frame is natural and healthy. For me it’s in the legs. I see this with Taylor Swift too. But my arms are very skinny, and I have a very small waist. Some women have thicker arms and upper body but very skinny legs. When your entire body looks very skinny, it’s not healthy. There’s something intentional about that, or a legitimate illness.

After a lifetime with a sister and a cousin with extreme eating disorders, I can tell. Sadly, Emma is not in a healthy phase right now. She’s all bones and I think people need to take eating disorders more seriously, and not just brush them off because it’s examples like this that help you notice if anyone you know might need help too.

    • Erica says:

That is exactly what I was going to say. She’s been this thin for a while – in Easy A she was totally skinny and looked naturally so. In The House Bunny she definitely carried more chunk, so she lots the extra weight she was carrying, but I don’t think she’s gotten much skinnier than she did in that initial weight loss

  9. Dingo says:

I understand why Emma Stone is promoting her role in The Croods in Australia. But it was really strange that she was in Berlin doning promotion – they don’t even use her voicework in Germany!

  10. Eve says:

Did they manage to make her eyes look BIGGER on that cover? Seriously, it’s creeping me out.

  11. Kim says:

I have yet to hear of an actress losing a job because they are too thin until that happens they will continue being underweight.

    • stellalovejoydiver says:

Emma Roberts lost her role in Spring Breaker because she refused to gain weight and was replaced by Ashley Benson.

I agree…and even though David O. Russell is a total a**hole, I do applaud him for telling both Amy Adams (in “The Fighter”) and Jennifer Lawrence (in “Silver Linings”) to gain a little weight as it fit their characters. That NEVER happens in a Hollywood movie, where an actress playing the ‘hot girl/love interest’ is told to gain a little weight and look a little fleshy.

  12. TheOneAndOnly says:

She’s overexposed and I’d rather see real models on the covers than the same celebs.

  13. Chinadoll13 says:

She looks anorexic…how sad she used to be so pretty 🙁
