Rebel Wilson hosted the MTV Movie Awards: how did she do & was she funny?

Rebel Wilson hosted last night’s MTV Movie Awards, and I have to say… she was pretty good. Granted, I only watched the first hour (before switching over to Mad Men), but I thought she was everything a good host should be: self-effacing yet confident, genuinely funny and snarky, and she was simply “game” for whatever shenanigans you wanted to throw at her. I think the low point was probably Rebel “acting” in the Best Movie clips (she did Les Miserables, Life of Pi and more) and I thought that bit fell flat. CB was mad that she did a lot of “fat jokes” and she was on the receiving end of some fat jokes too, and while it bugged, I thought Rebel struck a nice balance overall. It wasn’t like her weight was her only shtick. I also loved all of her Australian humor. I loved Iron Mangina and how many times she referenced “itchy tit” and “vadge”.

Rebel also won Breakthrough Performance and Musical performance (with the cast of Pitch Perfect). She deserved it! I cannot stress enough how much I loved Pitch Perfect. It’s great! I’m including some videos below, and you can see the full winners list/videos here and here.

    Sweet girl

I love Rebel Wilson and I love Pitch Perfect! She cracks me up in every interview, and I hope the kids from Pitch Perfect continue to get good work (I think I saw the Indian guy on the Mindy Project!).

    • Chicagogurl says:

Love Rebel. I youtube’d some of her interviews when she was doing press for pitch perfect and she’s amazing. I love how self deprecating and confident she is.

  3. Earth to Kelly says:

I watched the entire show, and Rebel was the high point of the show. Some of her humor made my jaw literally drop. The rest of the show was meh. I was excited for Brad Pitt, but his intro was so fast. The only other noteworthy moment was that girl’s failed attempt to Kanye West on Will Ferrell. That was really lame (for her). It seemed really quiet and subdued overall in my opinion

    • V4Real says:

I like Rebel but overall her jokes fell flat and her timing was off. Some spots even felt awkward for instance when she asked Zac Efron for a kiss. Seems as if she was searching for the funny but I will give her the benefit of the doubt on her first outing as a host. However I did love the kissing downunder joke.

      • Lucy says:

She and Zac are actually good friends, so I don’t think it was really as awkward as it seemed(IMO). Anyways, I absolutely love her, and I liked her hosting! Maybe all the fat jokes were a bit off, but I know that it isn’t all she’s about, so I didn’t really mind them.

      • V4Real says:

Like I stated I like her as well and this was only her first outing as host.

I still would love to see her in a remake of Muriel’s Wedding.

  4. truthSF says:

Who was that crazy chick who “Kanyed” Will Farrell? Was she drunk?

    • Kate says:

That’s Aubrey Plaza from Parks and Recreation. She’s my least favorite character on that show because of the actresses super deadpan blah demeanor. I honestly don’t think she was drunk, just being weird.

      • V4Real says:

That wasn’t scripted and she was booted from the show.

      • Lauren says:

I’ve never seen Parks but I did see this girl on the Kathy Show and she was so annoying. She has the worst personality.

      • Sirsnarksalot says:

She is THE WORST. He schtick/attitude is “hipster chick” by way of “insolent teen”. Like everything is so exhaustingly lame. Not funny and not entertaining. She the worst part of Parks and Rec by far.

      • andy says:

Didn’t Aubrey Plaza date Terry Richardson? I might be confusing her with someone else.

  5. Poke em all says:

I like how “Kanye” is a verb now.

  6. Poke em all says:

I like how “to Kanye somebody” is a legit verb now.

    • pop! says:

A fun, new action word! Lets practice together in different situations:
      Thanksgiving
Grandma was receiving credit for her homemade pies, when Jules totally Kanyed her, saying she bought store made crusts, so that crust really deserved the credit.

      Birthdays
It was Andreas’ twenty first birthday. His friends were at the bar with him, telling him what a wonderful friend he had been. His mom showed up and totally Kanyed him, saying since she gave birth to him, all credit was hers.

This fun can extend to other fun days, too! Like Martin Luther King Jr day, Presidents Day, even Christmas! Step off, baby Jesus, why do you take all the credit?

    • EscapedConvent says:

I agree. I look forward to any opportunity to Kanye someone.

Kanye-ing people has become a very entertaining thing, at least for me. I’m imagining Kanye when it’s time for his K- baby to be born. First he’ll Kanye the limo driver to the hospital, then he’ll Kanye Kim, & I expect when the poor little Kimling is born, he’ll Kanye her too.

  7. Agnes says:

not sure who she is, but she sure has a thing for track suits. i assume she’s from my home state, new jersey. haha.

  8. I love her but I think some of the jokes were a bit too vulgar and simple. The winners were great though!

But I was really sad that JLaw wasn’t there, as a Bradlifer shipper I would have LOVED to see them kiss on stage 🙁

So the high point of the show for me was definitely the trailer for Catching Fire! Do a separate post for it, pretty please? 🙂

  9. LadyMTL says:

Okay, maybe I’m showing my age here but who the hell is Rebel Wilson and why should I care that she hosted the awards? Honestly, I watch a TON of movies but I’ve never heard of this woman before now. Do I really need to see Pitch Perfect? Or is she known for something other than that?

    • She was in Bridesmaids (Kristen Wiig’s roommate) and What To Expect When You’re Expecting. She’s actually a really good comedic actress 🙂

    • Leaf says:

      ‘You read my diary?’
‘At first I did not know it was your diary. I thought it was a very sad, handwritten book.’

    • JenD says:

She’s had small roles in a couple movies (Bridesmaids and What to Expect When You’re Expecting), but Pitch Perfect was, to me, her big movie. I’d recommend it – she was awesomely hilarious in it.

    • The Wizz says:

Just track down the Fat Pizza TV series.

  10. Dhavynia says:

She’s really funny! Unfortunately I can’t get into the MTV bandwagon so I wasnt even aware it was last night.
I saw her in the trailer of Pain & Gain…makes me want to go see it because of her and the Rock

  11. Faye says:

I didn’t see the performance last night, so maybe I shouldn’t comment. In general, I don’t like when overweight comic women do all these “fat girl” jokes — I just feel like it’s too easy to go to that lowest common denominator, and while I understand being self-deprecating, I’d like to see them show off their comic chops with more sophisticated (or even just more varied) fare. I mean, you rarely see male comic actors joking about their short height, hair loss, etc.

    • pwal says:

Umm… Kevin Hart bags on his lack of height all the time. Another comedian… can’t remember his name (Greg Gillsomething) comments on his paleness all the time.

As for the fat jokes… I didn’t see Rebel Wilson’s performance nor did I see Melissa McCarthy on SNL, but I did take umbrage to the article Lainey posted on her site. In all honesty, I appreciate Rebel and Melissa doing anything and everything to shake things up and the fact that they aren’t postponing their careers in order to lose weight versus doing an effective job at the vocation that brought them into the spotlight in the first place should be applauded.

      • Faye says:

I don’t read Lainey’s site anymore, so I can’t comment on that. In response to your comment, though, I never said or even implied they should postpone careers until they lose weight.

What I said, and what I still stand by, is that there are a lot of much funnier jokes that could be made in areas not related to weight. I think it’s such an easy area to take a potshot at, and I’d love to see these women showing us what they can do in other areas. Frankly, I think it’s condescending to pat these women on the head and say, “oh, you’re making fat jokes — well, as long as you’re getting work, that’s just great!” They’re capable of more and as a woman, I want to see more from them.

      • TheOriginalKitten says:

        I love Kevin Hart 🙂

  12. Talie says:

I thought it sucked, unfortunately. I had high hopes.

  13. scarlett says:

I saw it but wish I hadn’t. I usually don’t watch but catch some of it on YouTube. It’s just a shoddy, awful, cheaply produced awards show. She was not very funny and much of her material consisted of her doing jokes based on her weight so she basically played the bumbling fat girl. It wore thin really fast. Most of the presenters i.e. the A or B listers showed up at the last minute..before they have to be prepped…did their part and got out of there. So the audience is mostly seat fillers. Then again this is not the Golden Globes or the Oscars..it’s MTV.

  14. JenD says:

I loved her hosting it, although I agree there were an excessive amounts of fat jokes. She was the reason I watched it.

Adam Sandler and Chris Rock had a little bit on there, and it was painful to watch. I’m not sure if I’ve outgrowned their humor, or if they just weren’t/aren’t funny anymore.

  15. Jaime says:

I thought her interpretation of Les Mis and Life of Pi was the highlight of her performance. I didn’t see the latter, but the former was atrocious. (Sorry, I know it was generally well received)

Overall, she was very funny to me. Much, much better than any of the hosts MTV has had in recent years (Russel Brand being the worst)

    • Bette says:

Russell Brand is the best. And you don’t know how to spell his name.

(Also, I like Rebel Wilson, to keep it on topic.)

  16. Shira says:

It’s bad enough Jennifer Lawrence wasn’t there and Bradley was left alone on the stage to accept Best Kiss (“she’s great to kiss!” – AWWW), but the fact that MTV blew off her category – Best Actress – because she wasn’t there and also didn’t air the Best On-Screen and Scared as Shit because the winners didn’t attend is complete bullshit.
I am glad Bradley beat DDL finally… even if it’s just an MMA award and the CCA award, he deserved something.

  17. Mew says:

She looks like a large version of Baby Spice! I think it’s a great look for her, definitely seems like she’s having fun (no idea who she is, what she did or does, but oh well..)..

  18. MsAubra says:

    she’s not funny

  19. Myaabb says:

I loved her hosting and thought she did a great job. She has always done fat jokes, that’s her thing. She did them in The Wedge (a skit show here in Australia) and Bogan Pride. It’s refreshing to see someone not taking themselves too seriously and just having fun.

  20. scarlett says:

I realize that she has always done fat jokes and that is part of her schtick but when you rely on purely physical comedy it seems like a cheap way…easy way to get laughs. She reminded me of a female Chris Farley.

  21. Amy says:

Oh look, an overweight comedienne doing a bunch of fat jokes. I’ve never seen that before.

  22. Lauren says:

I loved in the opening segment when she joked about being chosen to be Tom Cruise’s new wife.

    • Izzy says:

Wasn’t that great? 😉 I like that they had the stones to take a jab at him.

    • Brittney says:

Their “something to help me sleep” bit cracked me up, too. Don’t have much patience for Franco these days, but I’m glad he balanced out the “self-effacing” Oscar whine with a nod to his penchant for narcotics…

  23. Izzy says:

I think Rebel Wilson is adorable. I think she could have been even funnier last night if they’d had better writers, but she did an awesome job with what they gave her.

I HATED the outfits they had her in. To me it only emphasized the fact that most clothing designers and stylists have no idea what to do with larger figures. I get that being overweight isn’t healthy, but that doesn’t mean it’s OK to pile on the insult by making crappy clothes.

  24. MisJes says:

I’m not sure whether I watched the same show as some people here, but it was bloody awful.

Rebel’s jokes were awkward, fell flat most of the time and were unfunny. She’s a great comedic actress (watch Fat Pizza sometime), and a lovely chick, but as an awards host, she was mediocre at best.

  25. fingerbinger says:

I didn’t watch the MTV award show, but I love Rebel. I think she’s funny. She has a very dry sense of humor that I love.

  26. TheOneAndOnly says:

Since MTV has given up playing music videos, why is it even on the air other than to be a dumping ground and cash cow for Viacom?

  27. Tia says:

She is so likeable and funny. Really hope she has a great career and that she is allowed to do other charatcters than the funny fat girl

  28. Claudia says:

I thought her jokey dance bits/movie bits/etc. were kill-me-now-terrible, but some of her jokes were OK.

In all, I thought everything about the award show sucked hard.

  29. Tiffany :) says:

I started to watch Pitch Perfect a couple weeks ago…I couldn’t get through it. I was hoping it would be funnier and not so earnest.

  30. veronica says:

She’s horrible to look at. And no, it’s not because she’s hefty. I just find her dreadful, and her “comedy” is played out. And my GOD, her mouth is huge.

  31. lisa2 says:

I like Rebel.. but the show as a whole was just not funny.

  32. Holden says:

What the hell is she wearing?

  33. skuddles says:

    I love this girl! 🙂

  34. JL says:

Enough with the kissy lips already – all of you just stop it.

    It’s not cute
    It’s not sexy
    and it’s totally unattractive.

Ever notice it’s never A list actresses doing the kiss lips?

  35. Al says:

I didn’t watch the awards, but I watched Pitch Perfect a couple of nights ago and thought it was hilarious. One of the funniest movies I’ve seen in a long time!

  36. Lisa says:

She looks like a 45 year old soccer mom.

  37. Amanda says:

    I adore her. She’s awesome.

  38. buell says:

I was just praying she wouldn’t have a heart attack when she was trying to step/jump over those male dancers. It was awful.

  39. Madpoe says:

    Gawd awful show!

  40. F5 says:

Unfunny and it’s annoying that we have to give all the big girls free pass and “adore” them no matter what..
    I find her gross.
