Beyonce’s bikini-tastic H&M summer campaign: gorgeous or budget?

Beyonce is the face (and body) of H&M’s Summer campaign this year, and these are some of the photos from the campaign. I forget when the announcement came exactly – maybe a few months ago? I didn’t think much of it at the time, other than “Why is Bey going so downmarket? They must have paid her quite a bit.” I still can’t find how much Beyonce is getting to be the face of the brand, but I would imagine it’s probably mid-seven-figures, don’t you?

The campaign was shot by Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin. I’m not crazy about some of these photos – Beyonce isn’t as good at modeling as she thinks she is, and her expression is exceptionally blank, even for her. I’m also not sure what’s being sold – gold bangles, maybe? Vacations? Ah, no. The bikinis are what’s being sold. Also, this is part and parcel of Beyonce’s new “collaboration” for her tour, like the deal she has with Pepsi. H&M ads and billboards with these images will be tagged as “Mrs. Carter”. As in, The Mrs. Carter World Tour.

Beyonce said about the ad campaign: “I’ve always liked H&M’s focus on fun and affordable fashion. I really loved the concept we collaborated on to explore the different emotions of women represented by the four elements – fire, water, earth and wind. It was a beautiful shoot on a tropical island. It felt more like making a video than a commercial.” Girl… “fire, water, earth and wind”? Your butt was on the beach drinking mojitos!!!!!!

Donald Schneider, Creative Director of H&M, said: “H&M’s summer campaign starring Beyoncé is an epic fantasy, with glamour, drama and also a sense of paradise. It was amazing to watch her on the shoot make it all look effortless – a quality that makes her such an icon for women around the world. The campaign is the essence of Beyoncé, and also the essence of H&M this summer.” An epic fantasy? These photos look like they’re from a Hawaiian Tropic campaign.

It looks like she has only one pose.

    • nofkksgiven says:

The texture of the skin looks too airbrush-y…the colors look artificially bright and I don’t like her new nose as much as her last one…why keep tweaking it? other than all that…pretty pictures…

    • Mirna says:

      and one facial expression.

    • Tasha says:

She reminds me of Jessica Alba in that sense they both only have one facial expression and pose.

The picture were she laying down looks awkward, like she didn’t know what to do with her legs.

    • Rachel says:

To elongate her body and make her look thinner than she is.

  2. Tessa says:

I am so sick of her. Oh my Go, Bey… Go away!

    • popcorn11 says:

I never understand this type of comment. Why click on the piece if you really are tired of her? Just do what i do and change channels/look away/dont click on celebs you dont wanna watch/see/read about. Simple solution for ya!

    • Nev says:

      WORD.

      please.stop.enough.

      your not a model.

  3. Hpeeps says:

The belly button ring really classes this whole mess up. Ick.

  4. Hannah says:

I shop a lot at H&M but I don’t like their recent turn towards celebrity models.

  5. Apsutter says:

It’s been my experience that the people who try so hard to sound existential and smart are usually dumb as a box of rocks. Example: Beyonce

    • Trudy says:

lol Beyonce’ is anything but dumb.

      • springingforward says:

Ugh. Have you ever witnessed a taped interview?
        I am embarrassed for her.

      • apsutter says:

Please, she’s your typical child star who was home-schooled and never learned anything of substance. Many child stars speak and act like teenagers because they never progressed intellectually beyond that point. Bey is one of them, listening to her speak in an interview is painful.

    • lucy says:

AGREED. It’s obvious! (Obvious to anyone who can think for herself.)

I feel so much disgust and sadness that education and intellect and good works are not promoted in our society. I’m all for happy distractions and fun but this superficial vain self-servingness is destructive.

The conspicuously wealthy are rich. But what have they done for humankind?

  6. Meredith says:

She is very beautiful IMO and has a great body. She can pull off iconic looks when she wants. But I agree with Kaiser that this looks a bit down market. Sometimes with her music and promotions, I don’t feel she l’a living up to her potential as an artist (I.e. girls rule the world, all the single ladies – kind of crap songs). She is an amazing performer. But this ad isn’t doing her too many favors.

  7. sarah says:

her legs are photoshopped beyond recognition

  8. lucy2 says:

She’s a beautiful woman, but every photo seems oddly the same. And the whole thing does seem kind of cheap – why is she doing ads for anything, let alone such a lower cost store? She’s probably never set foot in any store that has “affordable” things.

  9. Sisi says:

Beyonce posing with her arms above her head is the best beyonce. Those red carpet photo’s from a few years back are still my favorites of her. Lmao.

    • lucy2 says:

LOL, I forgot about those. So awkward!

      • Sisi says:

don’t forget. I you should ever have a lousy day, those picture can bring a smile back to your face, I guarantee it, I know from experience.

  10. Jenna says:

Gurl, please. I can’t see her wearing anything from H&M.

  11. Elle says:

And this is why we have models. They know how to pose.

I’m not a Bey hater–I actually like her in small doses–but every one of these pics looks a bit too try hard. There was one that almost looked good (#4 with the white top), but I think that was more due to styling.

    • MonicaQ says:

+1. I guess I don’t pay attention enough to Beyonce to hate her but her un-photoshop-ed body is still bangin’–she just can’t pose to save her life.

  12. Rikki says:

    Gorgeous.

  13. I.want.shoes says:

Will her arms break if she puts them down by her side?

    • Miffy says:

No, she’s just making sure we get to consume as much of her in a bikini as possible, this includes the Bey-pits. Look at them. She really wants you to admire them.

  14. epiphany says:

As much as people sometimes denigrate models for being vapid and brainless, there really is some skill involved, especially in print ads where emotion and a point of view have to be conveyed to the camera – Beyonce does not possess that skill.

    • Elle says:

This is basically what I wanted to say, but you did it better. Except I think it’s not always skill; many models are just naturally good at it. Again, Beyonce doesn’t appear to have that quality.

  15. Earth to Kelly says:

You will find these poses in EVERY SINGLE PHOTO SHOOT she does. Nothing at all vaguely interesting or eye catching. I would skip right over these photos in a magazine

  16. RHONYC says:

i know i commented on this yesterday on fashionbombdaily, but what I left out you completely NAILED! she isn’t the model she thinks she is. that pose on the green platform looks terrible, especially how here feet are posed so awkwardly.

Bey is a money grab for H&M, i think it’s an attempt to sell out of merchandise period. speaking of selling out…i think this type of thing i beneath a ‘true’ diva and is as corny as that horrid ‘Uprade U’ mobile phone commercial she did years back.

    just plain ol’ tacky. 🙁

    • gogoGorilla says:

      Totally agree.

I think she is quite pretty but the photos are very catalog and totally photoshopped. Why do they insist on making her arms and legs look so skinny? We know she’s not.

Also, she is so oversaturated in the media at this point that the backlash is definitely coming. I don’t have the hate for her that other people seem to, but I’m already sick of seeing her everywhere.

  17. Mirna says:

I don’t think Beyonce has embraced her “icon” status. She acts like she still needs to hustle, by taking these crappy spokesperson/model jobs. Granted, she probably makes a crap load of money for a few hours’ work, but it really all just looks cheap and sad. Sort of like Mary J. Blige’s fried chicken commercial for Burger King.

  18. Mayday says:

She looks great. She is really starting to look like her mom as she gets older.

  19. virginia5 says:

why do they insist in giving her a thigh gap!! :/

    • PAgirl says:

That’s what I was wondering. My body type is very similar to hers and I have a very hard time believe there’s a gap there and not some chub rub 🙂

  20. ADD says:

I have a dumb question. How come all of these celebrities never have stretch marks? I know there’s a lot of photoshop going on (and in Beyonce’s case, a surrogate), but what are they doing that the regular public isn’t? I’d be interested to know what kind of surgery they’re getting (if any).

    • Bijlee says:

Makeup, photoshop, lighting all play a part. Makeup especially if you’re going to be doing some thing live I guess. And yeah creams and surgeries they most definitely getting that ish done.

    • virginia5 says:

lol, I have always wondered that too! I have stretch marks, and I have never been fat or pregnant, its unfair 🙁

  21. Tapioca says:

Sadly not quite the breath-taking tackiness of the House of Derrière line, but in the second black bikini pic she has the look of a woman desperately fighting back a turtle’s head. And oh, the photoshop!

    Money>>>>>>>>>Dignity. Apparently.

@ADD: Photoshop, body make-up and, I believe, you can fade them with lasers and collagen treatments (if you get to them whilst they’re still fresh and red).

  22. maggiegrace says:

She has that classically liposuctioned stomach look.

    • MCraw says:

What is that look? I’ve always wanted to see how one can tell when lipo happened…

As for this shoot… Meh. Rihanna would’ve brought the heat, I think. Beyonce is boring to me.

      • MissMoody says:

The slightly bumpy tummy look. Flat, but not quite smooth. Not so evident in this photoshoot but check out some Beyonce candids

  23. Sirsnarksalot says:

It’s gotten to the point where I hardly remember that she was originally marketed as a singer. Super-mogul JayZ has made his wife a brand (like he has gor himself) and the way these two whore themselves out for a buck is shameless. The two of them just sell their name and images these days and barely still entertain. It’s no wonder they’ve been trying to trademark their kid’s name before she’s even out of diapers. Their lust for money knows no bounds.

  24. GossipG says:

BUDGET,didn’t ever in my wildest dreams thought she would do this…It looks real BUDGET, but the photo shop is nice,a little bit discreet.she shouldn’t color her brows.

  25. bns says:

Beautiful black princess. The pictures of her in the beach chair are especially gorgeous.

  26. SydneySpy says:

Hmmm… All over-styled, airbrushed, over made-up, over-lit, over-coloured, photoshopped…. It reminds me of a Year 10 end-of-year art exhibit I attended at a local high school. The students used their friends as models. Not one was a professional model or artist, but, I kid you not, they projected more presence and charisma than this bow-wow, with none of the trickery. Tres budget. Give it up, woman. You’re old-hat and a bore.

  27. AngelinaNOTJolie says:

    Well it’s all photographers direction….she looks great…very pretty face/hair.

  28. janie says:

She’s just selling Beyonce, as usual.

  29. It is ME!! says:

Isn’t she supposed to be working on an album?

    • MissMoody says:

This exactly!! This is the story I want to read. Her world tour has already kicked off but where is the accompanying album to promote? Whispers on the internet say that because Bow Down/I Been On tanked, and they were supposed to be the two strongest singles *eye roll* they might be pushing the album back till the Fall. Her tour ends in Sept and from what I know, most fans who bought the pricey tickets are expecting new material and evidently not going to get any. So much for being the Queen eh?

      • It is ME!! says:

The Daily Mail had pics of her Belgrade concert that kicks off the tour (I believe). You need to see those pics. YIKES! Bedazzled bewbs. .

They also had the track listing for the show. I guess the Mrs. Carter tour is a greatest hits tour. Same ol, same ol.

  30. TxGal says:

Her poses are not natural very fake. Her body is not even her own since she has had worked done. She is just too much of a fake person.

  31. Belle Epoch says:

AWFUL! According to these photos she has no knees or ankles LOL. She looks bored and uninspired, plus the photos are heavily photoshopped. Phoning it in and making even more $$$$ – like they need it!

  32. Nev says:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vGZ76iJdToU

Madonna’s campaign was more clever and happening.

  33. wolf says:

does anyone believe beyonce would actually shop at h&m?

  34. mary says:

gorgeous, but I’m not believing she is a ‘real person’, also why is her signature pose the ‘air-out-the-pits’?

She has a short torso, maybe she thinks it makes her look longer/leaner?

  35. ladybert62 says:

The little penis flower sticking out of her head is hysterical – and close your mouth Bey – it makes you look even more stupid (if that is possible).

  36. Lemony says:

    I like the yellow bikini.
    Her hair looks ratty.

  37. mar says:

I love the black and yellow bikinis.

  38. Joy says:

I can’t help but think of Ricky Bobby when he didn’t know what to do with his hands.

  39. Miffy says:

This was shot on a tropical island? They could have saved themselves a crap ton of money and just used a community pool and it’s changing room. Then f*cked a lawn chair out on a beach on the drive home to get the sandy shots.
What a waste of a location.

  40. BlackDuck says:

I don’t really like Beyonce at all, but I would kill to
    have a body like that!

  41. mimi says:

This does not resemble her body (nor her face for that matter), so instead of the heavy handed photoshopping, I suggest they will photo- plant her head over another model’s bikini body.

She seems so full of herself and certainly not the great beauty she thinks she is.
A little modesty, elegance and grace would not hurt her.
Nor would following the saying: less is more.

  42. TheOneAndOnly says:

    Agree with just about everything; and nev,lucy2,elle, ephiphany – this is why the 90s supermodels were legendary, they could kill with the poses, transform into many looks, and never looked budget even when doing catalogue work – no one would ever say Naomi campbell, christy turlington, yasmeen ghauri, karen mulder, etc. were budget;
I will not patronize bouncy or Jay-Z; their greed and narcissism have become boundless.
Beyonce has one dead look because she has no real personality and nothing going on behind those blank eyes.

  43. Maggie says:

She should stick to singing. Which she’s really good at. This only makes her look cheap!

  44. Kelly says:

HOW do I get legs – thighs – like hers? Anyone?! Gah.

    • Agnes says:

Photoshop. Personal trainers. Personal chefs. Nannies. 🙂

    • RN says:

Start by remembering that that’s not her body. That’s not reality. That’s a photograph that’s been altered by a computer. And love the body you’re in. It’s the only one you have. Put it in perspective. Your thighs are not who you are. And if you find yourself slipping, remember all the runners who lost limbs yesterday and won’t be able to do what they love anymore. Then look in the mirror, blow yourself a kiss and go out into the world and do some good – size of your thighs be damned.

  45. mf says:

Same pose, ALL THE TIME!!! LOL!

  46. Agnes says:

Are we not talking about Bey’s glamorous nips that she’s displaying on her tour? Haha

  47. Mew says:

Budget, like all her modeling shoots. She has this oddest way of doing superduper stiff poses like she’s holding and sucking in so much, trying to be just perfect, not even breathing, reaaaally super stiff and awkward. It doesn’t look good or natural. Not that it would matter to anyone.

  48. yolo112 says:

Am I the only one that doesn’t like shopping at H&M?? lol… I’m a petite 2 or 4 and the last time I even TRIED to like something from H&M ended up being a size 10…my friend laughed when I chucked the clothes in question under the fitting room to her and said ‘hell to tha naw’ because I refuse to buy a size 10 in anything.

I refuse to comment on Queen Bey.

    • Leen says:

You could have looked at UK sizes as I dont know about you but I’ve noticed that they use European/UK sizes even in the US. I’ve always had a great experience there and actually find my sizing smaller at H&M than any other place.

  49. I Choose Me says:

“H&M’s summer campaign starring Beyoncé is an epic generic fantasy, with glamour, drama ass, boobs and also a sense of paradise meh. It was amazing exhausting to watch her on the shoot make it all look effortless budget – a quality that makes her such an…I can’t even finish this.”

Damn. I do think she’s beautiful and she’s a great performer but I am so sick of her being talked about like she’s the next coming of Jesus. I’m officially over all things Beyonce.

  50. I Choose Me says:

Something nice. I really, really like that yellow bikini.

  51. Laurie says:

I might be alone in my opinion or maybe it’s because I’m just too damn old and despite still thinking I’m cool, I’ve become blithely unaware of the fact that I’m totally old fart uncool – but I don’t get all the hype about Beyonce. She’s attractive to be sure, but I don’t see her as drop-dead gorgeous as she’s made out to be. She has some songs I like, but mostly she seems slightly out of tune and off beat. It’s gotta be just me. This photo shoot, to me, is like her current Pepsi commercial: super self-indulgent. Then again, I never understood the attraction to Johnny Depp either. He’s my age, I thought he was cute in 21 Jump Street, but ever since then, he mostly just looks like he needs a bath.

  52. Grace says:

These pics look shopped to death. She’s a pretty girl but she is really starting to look like her Mom. It is not a good thing for her to look so old and tired.
That pictures would have been lovely if she’d used her original hair color.
Matthew produces pretty kids so I’m sure there’s a 15-year-old somewhere waiting for him to bring her into the spotlight.

  53. lucy says:

She looks nauseous in these pix.

Or looking at these pix makes ME nauseous?

    Either way.

  54. Dawn says:

I don’t have an opinion about her good or bad, she just seems bla and very vain. She is so wealthy if she never worked again it would be fine and I really wonder if anyone would even notice..I wouldn’t.

  55. Kim says:

    Budget and WAY over photoshopped.

  56. Learned One says:

FYI….blue is the easier background color (or clothing color) to edit out flaws in Photoshop and similar programs. And here I thought Bey was just into blue…

  57. trle says:

WOW, you people are soo judgmental! I think she looks beautiful, and I love those bikinis! BTW her new tour is a bomb!
