Rachel Zoe’s A-list clients are dropping her because her rates are too high

I used to watch The Rachel Zoe Project in its first few seasons. I grew to love to hate-watch it. Rachel Zoe is a piece of work – she’s a bad manager, she’s a bad boss, she’s terrible with money, she’s disorganized and prone to melodramatic “breakdowns” when she’s overbooked. So, what made it all worth it? Rachel actually did know a lot about clothes, she had good relationships with designers and she was half-decent about finding a balance between what a celebrity wanted to wear and what she knew they should wear. But at some point, all of the bad stuff became the focal point of the show and I just stopped watching. Rachel is incredibly annoying and she’s a self-perpetuating drama machine.

It looks more and more like I was not alone in (eventually) hating TRZP. There are widespread rumors and well-placed sources claiming that Bravo has cancelled the show. And now Star Magazine claims Zoe’s A-list clients have been steadily dropping her over the past year as well. At one point, Zoe styles Jennifer Garner, Anne Hathaway, Cameron Diaz, Zoe Saldana, Kate Hudson, Eva Mendes, Demi Moore and Jennifer Lawrence. Demi left a few years ago. Saldana got someone new a few years ago too. Cameron apparently dumped her last year. And now Star says Kate Hudson and Eva Mendes dropped Rachel in February!

Rachel Zoe has become the thing she dreads the most: a fashion faux pas! A Zoe insider says her career is in a downward spiral as her Bravo reality show got canceled and A-list clients are dropping her from their payrolls.

“Rachel’s horrified,” the source confesses. “Last year she was axed by Cameron Diaz after 12 years. Then, days before the Oscars, Kate Hudson and Eva Mendes ditched her.”

The reason for the exodus? Rachel’s sky-high styling fees. “Kate and Eva met up just prior to the Oscars and were comparing notes… they agreed Rachel’s way too expensive and have since hired really edgy ‘underground’ stylists who are much cheaper because they’re unknowns.

“Rachel’s going to have to bite the bullet and adjust her pricing, like everyone else in the country. If she’s not careful, she’ll price herself right out of a career.”

[From Star Magazine, print edition]

Yeah, Rachel is probably the most expensive stylist around because she’s got the most name-recognition and, let’s face it, Zoe is a big reason why people pay attention to who is styling whom these days. I kind of hope Hudson and Mendes did dump her, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Anne Hathaway dumped her too because of the Oscar Nipple-gate Fiasco. Jennifer Lawrence is probably looking to get someone younger and hipper too. Which just leaves… Jennifer Garner?

Raisin face has a cute baby.

Well she should dress herself in stylish way first before she dressed someone else. She looks dead

Can’t believe this stick insect is still upright.

  4. Elly says:

I would sack her after seeing that photo where her jeans are way too long. Hemming anyone? She looks ridiculous!!

    • MyCatLovesTV says:

I’m not defending her particularly but if she is going for the 1973 jeans look, she’s got it. When I was in 10th grade I finally talked my mom into letting me wear jeans to school (wow, was that ancient history) and we all wore them so long that our hems dragged. I wore something called desert boots but many of the girls wore huge platforms with the dragging jeans. Now we would drag them until they were actually fringed from being scraped across the sidewalk. Goodbye hems! Oh those innocent days!!!

First, when did Eva Mendes become A-list.
Second, I actually still watch her show but only for the clothes. I like her 70s boho style, BUT…. She has an incredibly annoying voice and is completely out of touch, which is why I do not understand this story at all. She should fit in perfectly with all the other out of touch actresses in Hollywood-especially Kate Hudson. I guess the recession is starting to hit everyone and not just the middle class.

    • arock says:

totally agree. she has great taste in designers but her persona is all nails on chalk board. her proportions are way off, always pants too long, bangs in her face, heels too high, jackets too short or small. roger is has doofy proportions so maybe thats her thing.

Say something nice, say something nice..her kid is adorable. There! on topic, are her arms really THAT skinny?? holy molly!

I’m amazed this Gollum-in-Drag creature was able to get pregnant.

    • Cam S says:

I know it’s so mean, but I was thinking the EXACT same thing! All the while wondering how she has enough strength to carry that child.
Sorry, but I think the rumors are true about her influencing Nicole Ritchie’s eating disorder. Yeppers, I said it. I think both of those tricks worship the porcelain god face first.

ITA. She looks ancient, wizened! What a crone! The TOX ain’t working!

  9. pretty says:

wow look at those lines around her mouth.
that’s what you get for smoking lol. and i guess you can’t even treat those lines with botox? that’s sad.

  10. arock says:

shes going to look like the crypt keeper in a couple years if she doesnt start eating.

  11. Mook123 says:

In that first pic, she looks like a malnutritioned Alexis Arquette.

  12. Bird says:

I watch the show and find it pretty interesting. She is certainly not for everyone, but if you are open to it, she is likable ;-).

    • Amber says:

Yeah I watched the show specifically hoping to hate her. After years of rumors about her and the un-holy task she accomplished in making Richie, Lohan and Barton household names/tabloid “style icons”/pap targets by dressing them to the nines, 24/7, I soooo wanted to hate-watch. But I ended up liking her and learned that she was responsible for some of my favorite style moments of the last decade. Hudson (unless she’s using MUSE money) and Mendes probably CAN’T afford Zoe. If Diaz fired her (12 years is a long time), that explains why she’s looked like hell over the last year. Eva too has looked try-hard and inexplicable lately.

      • Amber says:

Btw (I’m replying to myself lol), stylists cannot hold a gun to a client’s head and make them wear something or guarantee they’ll wear it properly. There were two moments in the 1st season that demonstrated the drawbacks (and stresses) of the job. One was w/ Molly Sims. Zoe specifically tells her it will be cold, but she can’t wear tights or clunky shoes if she chooses a certain dress. Sims does it anyway and landed on every worst dress list. Another time, Zoe picked three gorgeous gowns for Jen Garner. Zoe tried and tried to get her to step out of her comfort zone. But Jen selected a beautiful, but black dress that was the most simple of the three. (Honorable mention for the time Brad forgot the kit-thongs, nipple covers, double stick tape-when dressing Cameron Diaz.) I’m waiting to see if they show how it all went down and if Zoe was personally handling Hathaway. B/c it’s amazing if Zoe suddenly forgot how to style Anne and get her proper undergarments. I’m also confused as to how this lapse in taste and judgment did not seem to affect the Jennifer’s, Garner and Lawrence.

    • Shelly says:

I agree. I like Rachel. Yes, her voice is kind of annoying and she’s a huge drama queen, but she also seems like a nice person. I love how crazy she gets over fashion…she’s insane! I also never bought those rumors of her pushing pills on Nicole, Lilo and Mischa. Please. Those girls were already way into pills and coke.

  13. ilovejapanesefood says:

I didn’t recognize her without the witch hat and dark lippie hahahahaha

Is she anorexic or is it just that she looks like one?

    • Isa says:

Well she is about the same size as she was when she was trying for a baby, so I’ll say she’s probably not anorexic. If she’s actually clinically anorexic, she probably wouldn’t have been able to conceive and carry a baby to term. She may not be eating very much, but apparently it’s enough that her body isn’t in starvation shut-down mode.

  14. Isa says:

I stopped watching when Brad Goreski left her employ and thus her show. He was the only personality on that show that made for good tv IMO. I wouldn’t say I hate Rachel or anything like that, but she’s kinda flat and uninteresting (on tv anyway).

If I were a client though, I would be concerned with what I see on the show. I know some things are played up for drama, but the amount of times where she almost did not find a great dress does not reflect well on her work.

  15. BRE says:

She has her design company now so she has really gotten away from styling so much so I’m not sure if she is really hurting there.

  16. bridget says:

I am totally fascinated by Rachel Zoe and the whole power-stylist thing. The early seasons of her show were great opportunities to see Fashion Weeks and geek out over clothes. Zoe herself isnt exactly the draw. I’m not a fan of her personal style, but I’ll admit that she’s usually right on target whene it comes to her clients’ style; the only one who ended up with her boho-hippie-style was Nicole Richie. I wasn’t hugely impressed with her work this season though. Jennifer Lawrence’s Dior choices werent fabulous, and Anne Hathaway’s were pretty boring (I don’t blame the pink Prada so much on Zoe as she should have done a better job talking Hathaway down from that ledge). I woukd imagine that Zoe’s clients spend a vast amount of money to work with her, but are frequently handled by assistant stylists rather than Zoe herself. Its not shocking that she woukd start to lose clients at this point.

  17. ronnie says:

She has pill popping strength, she is the one who supplies all the actresses with prescription pills so they stay skinny, she should not be news or in the gossip pages.

  18. Emily says:

I can’t stand to watch the show because I can’t bear to hear people who constantly complain about how busy they are. Turn some things down or stop bitching about it.

  19. Hoya_chick says:

This does not shock me at all. She seems to have gotten too famous (in her mind) for her own good. I liked her show back when Taylor and Brad were on and you actually saw them styling people and it was about the clothes and the fashion. Now it’s all about her own line, which is over priced and terrible. Look how she is dressed in these pictures? Who would buy any of that? Her pants are always toooo long and her personal is not accessible and practical for normal women. Plus every little thing is a huge deal, it’s like take it down a notch you are dressing people not curing cancer. It got old. Fast.

If Jennifer Garner is her only client, she’s in trouble. She isn’t a fashion girl at all. Her red carpet looks are hit and miss and I find her personal style frumpy and disheveled.

Ps the first couple of comments had me dying. So funny. Thanks ladies!

  20. Sarah says:

I can’t imagine how anyone who looks like she does is asked to “style” anyone. Ugh…

  21. Holden says:

How much are we talking about here? I can be edgy.

  22. Decloo says:

That baby needs a new stylist too.

  23. F5 says:

If they cancel her show, they should just hire a guy to follow her and the hubby around with a camera. I bet they wouldn’t even notice if there was no film in it ^_^

  24. NEENAZEE says:

Does anyone know how much she charges? And what’s the typical arrangement… are stylists on retainer? payroll? I’ve always wondered…

  25. NEENAZEE says:

I don’t know anything about RZ and I’m not a big fan of the self-centered fake drama on shows like hers… but these comments about her and her clients gave her a little more respectability in my mind. At least she deals with them as individuals, not just extensions of herself. A lot of the up-and-comers are just cool girls with great fashion sense… and they just put their clients in what they themselves would wear.

Ironically, Nicole Richie (the only client that seems to have adopted Zoe’s own look) was the only real success in my mind. She had a cool, glamorous, boho thing going on and pulled it off flawlessly. And Mischa Barton? Get real… she never had an ounce of style.

  26. SydneySpy says:

Really? I don’t understand why so many are so consumed with “style” and what others are wearing. Just wear whatever you want, however and wherever you want. What makes these “stylists” think they know any better than my friend, a teacher, who always looks fantastically put together? I’m more concerned with the essence of the person. Is this a good person? Does he/she treat people well, conduct themselves with honour and dignity, do good works in the community, support their colleagues and friends? I couldn’t give a rat’s arse about how they dress, or even look, providing they look as if they’ve bathed and combed their hair. And this RZ…meh.

  27. Tania says:

So what I want to know is, was Rachel responsible for Eva’s turban???

  28. Koumiss says:

For those who commented on her jeans, I think she is wearing a style or look that is edgy and fashionable, kind of a flare or bootleg cut, also can be worn as long as possible, especially with a wedge or platform shoe. Unless you are exposed to these high fashion trends, you probably won’t see them in your neighborhood. Because of that, some people mistake certain looks as being unstylish.

    • citygirlsf says:

I mostly agree, but still…at least the very tip of the shoe should show when she’s standing straight. When the pants are so long and wide that they rest entirely on the ground with no shoe peeping out, it looks like she has hooves! I mean, just look at her right foot in that photo.

I like the jeans a lot otherwise. They just need to come up maybe a quarter-inch so that it looks like there’s a shoe somewhere in there.
