Gwyneth Paltrow in Ralph Lauren at Tiffany’s Blue Book Ball: lovely or tragic?

So this is where Gwyneth Paltrow chose to go instead of the UK premiere of Iron Man 3. These are photos from last night’s Tiffany’s Blue Book Ball in NYC. How is this more important (to Goop) than the premiere of her film in her hometown? I don’t get it. Gwyneth wore this rich-looking blue Ralph Lauren gown which… I don’t know. Would this design flatter ANY figure? Because it certainly does nothing for Gwyneth’s body. The fabric is gorgeous, though, and the color is pretty on her. Satin (or silk-satin, as I’m sure this is) makes even the most toned ladies look lumpy, though. Also: side-part! HUZZAH. She’s still flat-ironing for every event though.

We don’t have all of the photos of some of the high-profile ladies, but you can see pics of Kate Hudson and Jessica Biel, etc here. Here’s Michelle Williams in Katie Ermilio – I like it!

Here’s Sarah Jessica Parker in vintage Vicky Tiel gold strapless gown styled with a Yeojin Bae black blazer and a Tiffany & Co. clutch and jewels.” I actually think SJP looks really good here. That blazer and dress is a good combo!

Doutzen Kroes in the same Dior gown that Natalie Portman wore to the 2012 Golden Globes.

I love Carolyn Murphy (right?), but she looks tragically underdressed for this event.

Carey Mulligan in Victoria Beckham. Love Carey, but hate this look on her. This is awful.

The color is lovely on Goop, but the material is tragic. Plus, it’s going to get wrecked if she sits down (which she probably wouldn’t do, anyway, because it’s too gauche).

Carey Mulligan looks like she’s wistfully pondering all of the good outfits she should have worn.

    • DSS says:

The dress would be ok without the sleeves. Regarding her hair…all of a suddent she is reverting to the side part. It kind of makes you wonder if her minions are instructed to read various blogs, came across this one and filled her in on the tragic middle part.

      • Lauren says:

Yes, indeed. Side part is very flattering..she must be reading the blogs! From the collarbone down-everything looks tragically saggy..from boobs to hemline. Lifestyles of the Smug & Saggy.

    • V4Real says:

Im going to shoot myself later for saying this but I like it (wow that hurt to say; almost threw up in mouth). I agree that the material is not the best because it wrinkles easily.

  2. Karen says:

Wow they all look so awful. Carey looks like death warmed over :'(

  3. Nev says:

    first picture of The Goop…stunning.

    SJP Forever…wow!!!

Carolyn Murphy could have been alot better!

    • El Kiddo says:

agreed. i think goop looks stunning.

      • Hipocricy says:

Me too. She looks statuesque with a great long silouhette.

Too bad her hairdo doesn’t match the sophistication of the dress…an updo like a nice modern chignon would have looked better.

      • wonderwoman21 says:

I think goopy looks fantastic too

  4. lucy2 says:

    Pretty color but horrible style.
Michelle looks good, and the pink dress is pretty. No on the little fur coat though.

  5. Charlotte says:

Don’t love any of the looks but do adore GOOP’s colour. SJP’s face hasn’t aged in the last decade. Carey is young, wealthy and cute…I’m dismayed that she seems perpetually so upset. I want to hug her.

  6. Joiq says:

Agreed that the color on Goop looks so lovely. But there’s something dated about the gown. Like if she had a headband on I would’ve thought this was a photo from the late ’90s.

  7. poppy says:

goop is meh as always. great choice of pictures as always.

i am shocked at carey m.
agree with t fanty, mulligan’s facial expression tells the tale.

did carolyn murphy forget how to apply powder or did she motorboat a bowl of coke?

  8. j.eyre says:

Oh, I think GOOP looks amazing. I like everything about that dress and her look.

I, too, think SJP looks really nice

    • Tulip Garden says:

I thought I was the only one! I love GOOP’s look here too. If they have a bad taste section on CB, at least, I won’t be sitting there alone.

    • TheOriginalTiffany says:

I am with you! I adore this look and think she is perfection in it. Love the side part too. I can’t believe I think Goop looks like the best of the lot.

      Gorgeous.

    • Lulu.T.O. says:

Agree! I think both GOOP and SJP look amazing.

    • Decloo says:

Agree. I love everyone about this dress. Everyone knows that Goop has a great figure. Her clothes don’t always have to be fitted. I think her hair and makeup look great here too. This dress is a confident choice.

    • Becky1 says:

Yeah, aside from the overly flat ironed hair I think she looks good. I love the color of the dress and I think the butterfly pin is cute. The dress would be better without sleeves, though.

  9. NerdMomma says:

    Where is Doutzen Kroes’s nose?

  10. Phoebe says:

I think Gwyneth looks amazing. The dress could be more flattering but she still looks great. Side part! Hurrah!

FYI the Iron Man 3 London premiere was meant to be the day before but got moved for Margaret Thatcher’s funeral, so Goop’s original plans wouldn’t have clashed. And after the crazy amount of press she’s already done for IM3, I don’t blame her for not changing her schedule and going to this ball.

  11. Rose says:

Was the photographer 3 feet tall?

  12. Jacqueline says:

SJP’s necklaces are both beautiful, the sapphire in particular. But did she feel like she just had to wear the pendant that matched her earrings? The way that both necklaces appear placed on her chest makes it feel like she should have gone with one or the other, but not both.
    Michelle looks frumpy.
Carey’s hair-color is doing some light play that makes it look, at first glance, that she only has a pouf of hair on the top of her head.

  13. Miss Kiki says:

Love the colour, hate the material. The hair is better.

  14. Perspective says:

    To each their own.
Maybe your thoughts may be a bit biased because she’s snooty and annoying but I actually love this look on Goop. Anywho, she looks great. She has a side part which suits her better. It also shows a bit of curve, she has a boy shaped waist/hips so the silk’s lumps & bumps is working it for her too.
The rest, meh. Michelle looks boxed in, Sarah reminds me of a soap opera star, it must be the shimmery gold. Instead of following the trend, it looks like she went back a few decades.

  15. anneesezz says:

I don’t like that dress at all but the color is lovely. And as usual, if she’s not photoshopped, she looks very OLD.

  16. Amanda says:

Date I say Queen Goop looks pretty lovely I think?? She definitely needs a new hair do, though.

  17. Norman Bates' Mother says:

Gwyneth and Carey should swap outfits. Gwyneth already proved she can pull of capes and suits and this VB design is made for tall, lanky women like her and then Carey should burn that horrible gown because no one would look good in that thing.

  18. pwal says:

I don’t know what is the deal with today’s satin. If you watch any MGM Jean Harlow film, the white/light colored satin bia-cut dresses she wore looked flawless. Of course, she had to stand up or lay on a special board between takes, but seriously, those satin dresses looked unbelievable.

    • MinnFinn says:

      Two problems with today’s satin.

      1. it has lower thread count and
      2. low thread count satin is very lightweight and floaty

To compensate for the lightweight satin, Goop’s dress should have been both underlined and lined.

That would have stabilized the bias-cut fabric plus it would have added necessary weight and body to the fabric/garment for achieving a gorgeous drape.

Love that shade of blue on her. Don’t like the sleeve treatment. Cutout shoulders always look slutty to me.

  19. OhDear says:

Re: Paltrow – I like it, though the dress could have been cut better (more like the white one Anne Hathaway wore). Like that she takes fashion risks.

    SJP looks great!

The top on Doutzen Kroes doesn’t look like it fits her properly.

Black is not Carey Mulligan’s color.

  20. TG says:

Am I the only one that thinks Gwyneth looks better with a center part. She looks way harsh here but she is in good company because everyone else looks harsh and on the wrong side of 40. How is that possible? Even the adorable Carrie looks harsh and tragic. This is not high fashion this is somebody hates ladies night.

  21. sala says:

    Love Carey’s outfit!

  22. Jayna says:

Love love the color. I always hate sleeves like that.

  23. Kate says:

Michelle Williams finally looks like a grown up woman:)

  24. mel says:

I would be embarrassed as a celebrity to show up at an event like this and taking all of it so seriously in light of the horrible events that have happened this past week.

  25. Miss M says:

For one second, I thought Michelle looked like Sienna Miller.

  26. Anthea says:

I’m glad Gwyneth Paltrow did this throwback to her 90’s style, I prefer it to most of her modern styling, which makes her look old and dried out most of the time.

  27. StaCat1 says:

Like the GOOP dress..just wish it was not satin.

  28. ladybert62 says:

All of the outfits shown above are awful.

  29. irishserra says:

I find Goop obnoxious but I think she looks really pretty here. I love the color of the gown, although not necessarily the gown itself.

  30. Tessa says:

Why do makeup artists still use Makeup Forever HD powder? Why? I just don’t get it.

  31. Laurie says:

From top to bottom: Gwyneth – good color for ner, she had the bod to pull off that unforgiving fabric, but the sleeves and the butterfly brooch are tragic. Michelle Williams – cute hair, dress is too big, shoes are wrong. SJP – dress too poochy, jacket is wrong, jewelry not right. Doutzen Kroes – Lovely head to toe. Carolyn Murphy – No, no and all sorts of no. Carey Mulligan – sad face as usual and badly proportioned outfit.

  32. CosmicGirl says:

Both Gwyneth’s and Michelle’s dresses are horrendous.

  33. Jackie Jormp Jomp (formerly Zelda) says:

I like it minus that hideous brooch. Is it 2004? Did I miss something

  34. mar says:

I hate how Gwyneth looks here. That dress is not good for her, she looks 55

  35. Heathers says:

Tragically, her skin looks terrible. She and Jennifer Aniston just can’t seem to stop tanning. I hate the look on both of them (and on most people who do it), it ages them so terribly. If they would stop tanning and start curling their hair instead of flat-ironing it, they’d both look years younger. Sorry about the rant. I just can’t with this look. I don’t hate either of those dames, mind you. I just think they’re not doing themselves any favors.

  36. Lee says:

The options for Gwyneth should have been restricted to lovely or godlike.

  37. annaloo. says:

Was there anyone at this event that wasn’t blonde?
