We need to talk about what happened on last night’s ‘New Girl’ (spoilers)

****This post contains SPOILERS for this season of New Girl, especially last night’s episode.

Here are some photos of the cast of New Girl at The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences in Hollywood last night. There’s Zooey Deschanel, Jake Johnson, Lamorne Morris, Hannah Simone and Max Greenfield. As some of you know, I have been into New Girl since the beginning. New Girl enjoyed a first wave of success, and then the critics started complaining and everybody was like, “Ugh, I hate it now because Zooey is so twee” but then people came back and they were like “Huh, it’s actually a pretty decent sitcom.” The first season had some hits and misses, and I think they really began to find their stride when Justin Long came on for a multi-episode arc as Jess’s boyfriend. The episode where Jess thinks she’s “bad in bed” is still one of the funniest episodes they’ve ever done.

Anyway, this season has been leading up to the situation between Jess and Nick (played by Jake Johnson). I have to give the writers a lot of credit for treating a lot of the sexual-tension storylines with a lot of authenticity (except for the Indian matchmaking episode, which was just kind of dumb). Jake Johnson and Zooey have a crazy amount of chemistry together, and some of their “tension” scenes are actually incredibly hot. Several episodes ago, Nick finally kissed Jess and OMG it was amazing. The kiss was a game-changer.

Also a game-changer? Last night they finally had sex. What did you think about the way they handled it? I was… ugh. Like, I loved everything leading up to it, I loved all of the flashbacks of the characters talking about their first times (Jake Johnson and Lamorne Morris deserve special shout-outs because they were cracking me up, and I love that Cece’s first time was Mick Jagger). But I’m a perv and I wanted to see more of Jess and Nick finally doing it (but OMG he carried her to bed!). But I loved the last scene where Nick looked freaked out and he and Jess started joking around.

So, will this ruin the show? I don’t think so. I think it opens up more possibilities. And I’m kind of tired of Cece’s story line this year and it will be interesting to see if they can write their way out of it. And Taylor Swift is going to be on the season finale. What will happen?

i just watched this! honestly i really love them together and i can’t wait to see what happens. some of the scenes were super cheesy, but they were hilarious. i also hope they give more screen time to winston because he has really funny moments. also cece and schmidt need to just get together already it’s just annoying waiting it out…

  2. Lizzie says:

Those two are so good together. It’s like all eye-contact and it’s super hot.

  3. Amelia says:

Usually when I’m flicking through the channels in the evening, I’ll occasionally catch New Girl on E4, but something about it really got me hooked. Can’t wait for this episode to air over here, we’ve just seene the Halloween episode where zombie Jess gets punched in the Haunted House.
Nice easy watching in the evenings when you can’t be bothered to do the customs paperwork you were supposed to do earlier in the day 🙂

  4. marie says:

I watched, and laughed my butt off last night. I love when they show Schmidt and Nick in college, so funny. All of it was good actually.

  5. Erinn says:

I skimmed over it! I’m so far behind on the series! I have to wait and watch it with the fiance because he actually loves the show. We just saw Nick’s dad’s funeral episode.

I have to say, I am in love with Nick Miller. I love the character.

  6. Emily says:

I love this show; I usually laugh for the entire half hour. I hope this means they are going to be together, and they aren’t going to drag it out with a lot of weirdness between them now that they’ve “done it”.

I think CeCe’s story is interesting – I thought there was going to be a bigger fight between her and Jess after the bachelorette party (Jess was right…she shouldn’t have to give so much up). I’m just hoping they get to the wedding so we can see what’s going to happen.

  7. Lb says:

I love watching New Girl and The Mindy Project back to back. They’re not perfect shows but I find myself laughing usually the whole time, and that’s kind of all I need in my TV shows sometimes.

    • Holly says:

Yes! And Fox managed not to cancel either of them (this year anyway)… Loving The Mindy Project so much means I usually watch that first and then New Girl and I never saw anything coming between me and New Girl, still love it though.

“And Taylor Swift is going to be on the season finale. What will happen?”

The show will be horribly compromised by wedging in a celeb – and a crap celeb at that – and it will be a long, long wait for next season’s premiere so I can wash the Swifty taste out of my mouth. Why NG, why??!!

  8. bsh says:

The first season was awesome but the second one was a huge disappointment to me. Kinda dull and unrealistic, no fun, poor writing and the Jess/Nick situation situation has been streched out waaaay too much.

  9. pfeiffer87 says:

    I greatly dislike this show.

  10. Diva says:

I can’t get into this show. I also can’t get into the Mindy Project. I loved her on The Office but not this new show.

  11. annabelle says:

That kiss was so hot. I loved that entire episode, but the chemistry there is insane.

I love the writing, it’s fast and there’s usually two or more jokes happening at once. When Schmit fainted while Nick was out on the ledge I nearly fell off the couch.

I had to read this, even though I haven’t gotten to see the episode yet. Such a great show.

  12. Jenna says:

I’m not too crazy about it; I kind of feel like they rushed it. 🙁

  13. rachel says:

the bit in schmit’s story when he went ‘penis vagina penis vagina’ slayed me hahahah

  14. Lipsy says:

I’ve raved about this show during its first season but I’ve fallen out of love for the show. It doesn’t make me laugh anymore but I still watch it because I’ve kept up with it since the first episode. I actually prefer The Mindy Project now, which I actually hated in the beginning, but that show has finally found a stable ground and I love all the characters on that show (Morgan!). My favourite part last night was when Danny grabbed Mindy’s running shoes for the triathlon, saying ‘we wear the same size’!!!

  15. angie a says:

I loved this ep, and I’m happy they didn’t wait until the season finale to resolve Nick/Jess. I’m a “Daver” too, lol.

  16. Ari says:

to be honest im a dylan obrien fan and so i watched all of new girl so that i would be caught up for last nights episode lol (he played guitar boy) but along the way i became endeared to jess and nick and so glad with this ep!

    • nate says:

thank god i’m not the only one then. 😀
      do you watch tw too?

      • Ari says:

YUP! cannot wait till june!!! like seriously cannot wait…im a sterek fan also im over at tumblr under terrible-wolf

i welcome anyone who adores this show like i do to come say hi lol – but yeah new girl is soooo good im really happy adding it to my tv roll call >_<

  17. kim says:

Hope they don’t get together bf/gf wise. It.would be funnier if they were all… huh ….I think we should justbe friends…git that out of our system..woo..now we can move on and not let this be weird kinda humor. This season has been kinda boring and I find myself starting not to care bc of the bad writing.

    • Andrea says:

I wish Cece and Schmidt would get together already. They were REALLY cute together. I liked the episode last night a lot. The show has waned on me this season (the cece schmidt not being together bit has gotten so old).Last night made up for it. Does anyone know wat song was playing at the end of the episode last night??

      • Bethany says:

I think the song was “Anything Could Happen” by Ellie Goulding. I remember because that’s my fav song right now and I loved that they used it!

  18. Bird says:

I am so in love with Nick. It was pretty hot when he picked her up and carried her to the bed! It’s a great show and makes me laugh out loud.

  19. TimeOutTravels Danni says:

IT WAS SO GOOD! My husband was watching the Nuggets game so I had to wait until this morning. SO SO GOOD! I love the way they treated it. I think Nick was like: WOW, not like: OH sht!

  20. oivey says:

I loved this show for the first season and a small portion of the second season but the writing got stale.

  21. Ally8 says:

@ oivey, agree. They’re trapped in that loft like it’s Central Perk in 1997.

The writing for the guys on this show is great. Jess, on the other hand, is written like an SNL sketch of Zooey Deschanel. Nick is bearable in the guy group, but loathsome as a love interest. I’ve liked every one of Jess’s boyfriends better. He’s homely, whiny and a hateful loser.

It’s like that old line from Sex & the City about an unemployed bartender being a catch. Let’s raise your standards, Jess!

Again, re-christen it The Schmidt Show and you’ll be on to something.

    • LucaBella says:

This is exactly how I feel, Nick is great as a friend but HORRIBLE as a love interest, and everyone on televisionwithoutpity has turned both Nick and Jake Johnson into these amazing supermen who are supposed to be SO HOT, and I want to throw up. I wish all those people there would raise their standards… Jake’s great in this role, and Nick is a well-written character, but these people are trying to turn him into George Clooney and it’s just not gonna happen..

I miss the original season and the woman-child Jess. It’s just starting to feel like Friends 2013.

  22. Patricia says:

Can we please also acknowledge Dylon O’Brien’s character? Because he cracked me up so much, I don’t even know.. Then again, it was so tragic, it reminded me of one of his other roles, so that might be the reason. :>

In any case, I’m really looking forward to where the show’s headed!

  23. Al says:

I love this show. So does hubby. Weboth laughed out loud all through the last episode. I’m so happy Nick & Jess finally got it on. I’m looking forward to seeing where they take the the relationship now.

I don’t think Cece will go through with the wedding. But Schmidt might not be available anymore.

  24. 4evaRedd says:

Adore Jess! This is one of the better shows on television (maybe because there are so few situation comedies?). I love Schmidt and Cece–when they were naked in the back of the car and ended up in Mexico was classic! All the bathroom scenes are great, too. Jess and Nick laughing at the end of this week’s episode was really nice; kind of like they realized what had just happened. That first kiss a few episodes back was awesome and him carrying her was such a romantic gesture. And who can forget Winston? Loved the ep where he’s out to buy condoms wearing the wrong pants and he gets lost. Great show!

  25. GeekLuva says:

I love this show too! I had to wait to watch the newest episode, but I got to watch it with my niece and I think she’s now a fan!
