Gwyneth Paltrow in pink Valentino at the Met Gala: boring & disappointing?

It’s not that I think Gwyneth Paltrow’s pink Valentino gown is the worst. It’s far from the worst. It’s just that… I expect more from her, I think. This gown seems like she was phoning it in at last night’s Met Gala. I don’t understand how a self-respecting (self-adoring, actually) Fashion Girl wears this to a punk-themed Met Gala. You know what it is? Four or five years ago, if Gwyneth had to go to a major fashion event with a punk theme, she would have gone all out and punked-out. But now that she’s a lifestyle maven trying to appeal to middle-America moms, she feels she can’t go that far. So she plays it safe in an ugly pink Valentino. Goop, you disappoint me.

Also disappointing? Carey Mulligan in this completely blah Balenciaga. It’s a cute dress, it looks okay on her, and it would have been perfectly suitable for one of the premieres or screenings of The Great Gatsby, but it looks out of place for the Met Gala. She looks miserable too. What’s up with her lately? She always looks like she’s about to cry.

And what the hell is Anna Wintour wearing? This is Chanel. And it’s not punk at all.

Carey, much as I love her, always gives off a grandma vibe, she looks miserable here and she’s got the cutest smile so that’s a shame.

Wintour wasn’t even trying to do the punk thing, it’s not even worth criticising, she obviously didn’t care about the theme.

    • JenD says:

      Wow, that’s major sad face.

      • Louminary says:

Isn’t “about to cry” Carey’s default setting? She always looks on the verge of tears.
Could this be the Sad Keanu of the new generation? But without any actual real-life tragedy involved?

    • V4Real says:

Ann reminds me of the scene from Legally Blonde 2. She told everybody it was a costume party but when they showed up she wasn’t wearing a costume.

    • Tomas says:

You actually believe that Kaiser , if that were true, what was Paltrow’s motivation in wearing a dress with her ass hanging out, that’s more in your face then puting on dark eyeliner and some fishnets .

She probably wanted to stand out by doing the opposite of punk, she just didn’t get that she would also stand out for wearing a fug dress.

  2. Itsjustblanche. says:

Anna’s dress looks like its from Talbots.

    • Faye says:

Heeeeeeeyyy, don’t insult Talbots. Over the years I’ve found some nice things there, especially for work (they didn’t look like that dress).

    • ncboudicca says:

LOL, I would love it if she was lurking and read your comment. She’d be constipated for weeks!

    • carol says:

and isn’t SHE the one who organized the whole party thingie? what’s the point of organizing a punk themed event, and then not wearing punk?

      • NYC_girl says:

Anna Wintour and punk to me are incongruous. I don’t think she could pull it off and she’d probably look stupid unless she wore some sort of dress with black leather, tastefully done (LOL)? Madonna is a few years younger but look at her from the early 80s. While not as edgy as Blondie, she was young enough to be part of the whole “scene.” I don’t know. I was 10 in ’79 but remember when I was in high school the skinheads I’d see in the East Village scared the hell out of me and it was pretty damn rough there.

How punked out were the attendees supposed to be? I didn’t know the Gala was happening and haven’t seen the actual show but the fact that the MET used a pic of a young model “looking punk” on their mailing made me laugh.

  3. e.non says:

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz…… for paltrow. madonna got it; but basically, this was a huge miss — and a stupid meme. those people in attendance didn’t have a clue. too bad johnny rotten didn’t crash it…

    • annaloo. says:

I know, right? And in a city where Lou Reed, Laurie Anderson, David Byrne and DAVID BOWIE live, you mean to tell me this is what passed for PUNK???!I think Anna phoned it in.. gave up. After all, a Kardashian has crashed the party and Anna didn’t bother with the theme.

Too bad there wasn’t more fabric to cover Gwyneth’s face. AND (as per usual) SHE NEEDS A BRA.

  4. Anna says:

I’m just glad we can’t see Gwyneth’s private parts.

  5. Faye says:

I doubt very much Gwyneth is dowdy-dressing for the mythical “Middle America” Goop worshippers, considering that last week she wore a “dress” that necessitated a bikini wax. Maybe The Most Beautiful Woman in the World is being gracious and giving the other, more peasant-y celebs a chance to shine.

    Carey looks washed-out and depressed.

  6. Tina says:

I call bumpwatch on Carey. I think she constantly feels like barfing. That would explain the sad, pale face.

  7. gogoGorilla says:

Obviously the secret theme was Tablecloth Couture. Why bother having a theme?? It doesn’t look like most of the guests adhered to it, including Nuclear Wintour.

  8. SageM says:

Goop and Kim K were among the worst dressed for sure. Madonna… well, she should put it away, nobody wants to see it anymore. Miley looked amazing, loved her dress!

    • Becky says:

I agree that miley looked amazing – she sure got a good pick with that Marc Jacobs! I wonder If she scored that because if that punk hair cut- she rocked it. But if not for the hair, I’d def would have given the dress to someone more interesting.
Also lived the Burberry dress worn by cara and the Burberry jacket on sienna who looked stunning.

  9. LAK says:

Edna mode only wears Chanel or Prada darling!!

  10. Merman says:

Paltrow looks stepfordish.Awful choice. And I’d rather see Mulligan with a different hair color.

    • Lauren says:

Goopbush is hiding again in a boring dress, trying to convince us all she is not a neglected-40ish horny debutante. Goopbush is being neglected by her hubby, rationalizes his neglect by claiming she doesn’t place demands on him because he is a genius. My hubby is highly educated & intelligent..and i do everything i can to rip him away from his work. Goopbush’s marriage is dead, and we all are suffering because of it. Love J-Law and Miley..stunning.

  11. tracking says:

Doesn’t the Valentino itself also look lazy? Very similar to Aniston’s strapless Oscar gown, with sleeves and the neck thing added.

  12. Tessa says:

I hate the way the fabric is bunching on Goop’s dress. It’s awful. Not punk in the least, unless she’s really reaching for some sort of inspiration that’s completely over all of our heads, like it’s supposed to be the morning light coming through the door crack at 5am at CBGB or some crazy crap… And her makeup, it’s almost like she forgot to put any on.

  13. Dawn says:

Do none of these people understand punk? Where are the holes, the safty pins, the boots, the leather? Everyone of them here including Anna look like they are attending the Kentucky Derby. Punk not. And Anna must really be up Kanye butt cause her dreess is damn near as ugly as Kim’s. All respect for Anna is officially gone.

    • Kayla says:

      Donatella was pretty great..

    • Loira says:

The girl from True Grit was wearing pins on her dress. It looked very good, princessy with an edge.

    • annaloo. says:

I agree– this is a passel of poseurs. Miley did have a cute take, as did Sienna Miller. Madge was the only one who seemed to get it… but hell, BEYONCE was co-chair or this thing, and Kanye performed. If that didn’t signal that no one got the punk theme, I don’t know what else would. I mean, David Bowie DOES live in NYC…and all they had to do was look to Williamsburg or the LES for a band. Even the MisShapes DJing would have given this event more cred.

  14. Toniko says:

Zzzzzzz. She looks like a boiled pike perch wrapped in a gift paper.

    • badrockandroll says:

From the best fishmonger in London dahling.
Our Gwennie is a clever little Codfish though – the pink really stands out in the sea of black.

  15. Kayla says:

I kind of like this bright shade of pink on paltrow but yes i expected more from her as well as kristen.

  16. DanaG says:

Goop just looked bad. That stupid dress where she had to shave would have gone better at this event. Punks loved to shock. Hot pink ball gown is not punk. It’s hard to believe she is married to an english musician clearly they don’t talk music. Why bother with a theme if everyone including the host is going to ignore it. It could have been so much fun punk was a lot of things but boring was never one of them.

  17. Elly says:

I´m disappointed. This would have been the perfect occasion to wear this horrible outfit again:

  18. Jenna says:

I’m starting to think that the moment Wintour realized that, no matter her feelings – pretty publicly well announced feelings at that- on the KimYe’s attendance to her event… she just gave up.

She lost total interest in the whole event and just threw her hands into the air and figured “Fine. Whatever.” and simply gave up. As did a lot of the big names. Once the Kat-faced one is attending, the shine is off the rose and what’s the point anymore?

    • truthful says:

      LOL!!

      • Jenna says:

I honestly can’t think of any other reasons for this mess of a “gala” – maybe a half dozen followed the theme and the rest just showed up in pageant gowns, it’s so strange. The dress Wintour is wearing looks like a very very expensive housecoat. Cut it off at the knees and she is wearing my grannies gardening dress. She’s totally given up and the rest of the crowd too.

  19. paola says:

One word for Carey’s shoes: PAINFUL!

  20. gillie says:

Goop looks like a huge bottle of Pepto Bismol. Which I need every time I read something about her.

  21. Mabs says:

Is Mrs. Paltrow having a personal love affair with sheer material blocking of late? Ew. It does nothing but immediately draw my eyes away from the total picture. Huge mistake.

  22. Barrett says:

She showed her bum and vadge last week. This week she needed a break…..

  23. Ag says:

Goop in cheap-ass looking pink satin. MUAHAHAHA!

And Wintour, good lord. She should ban herself from the gala next year.

  24. anneesezz says:

Gwyneth looks bad from head to toe. Bad face and bad hair and her make up is blah, but when you are the most beautiful woman on the planet I guess you can phone it in, which is what it she did here. Just plain mediocre. The look on the guys face holding her hand pretty much says it all…

  25. Liberty says:

“My friends all say I have the upper chest area of a 22-year-old stripper, and the mid-to-upper shoulder area of a teen singer! So–“

  26. Viv says:

I am not the biggest Wintour fan, but kudos, she just gave everyone the finger by ignoring Punk.
    She’s like:
“Punk? Yeah, I meant that for you, not for me. I get to weat whatever the F I want.”

  27. lucy2 says:

I don’t like any of the dresses.

  28. ojulia123 says:

If I don’t have to look at Gwyneth’s butt cheeks, then I consider the outfit a win.

  29. truthful says:

I remember that punk outfit Goop wore w/the smeared eye makeup, LOL

now she has went to the opposite extreme, she tries too hard and its all an act for her, she is so dang gone phony..its pathetic. Martha Stewart would have worn it better.

Carey’s dress is fab! just not for this.
I really like her dress though.

  30. Jegede says:

Someone once described Carey Mulligan like this – ‘No matter what she wears she looks like she’s been told she has 3 months to live’.

    Now I can’t unsee it!!

  31. Jegede says:

    Edit.

  32. Jegede says:

    Edit.

  33. Shelly says:

Carey looks fabulous. As far as Gwyneth goes – how is her dress even punk? I don’t get it. Even her hair and makeup are the same as always.

  34. MisJes says:

These two outfits are as utterly boring, dull and blah as the people wearing them.

And Anna Wintour is Anna Wintour. She can wear whatever the eff she likes, it’s her party!

  35. JennJ says:

Since the spirit of punk is rebellion, do you think that all the people in pink and flowers thought that they were actually being punk by rejecting the rules?

  36. MojoRising says:

    Horrible.

  37. Kristine says:

All of these are just terrible. Bad bad bad bad bad. On a side note I saw Iron Man 3 last night and Oh god, way too much Goop.

  38. Thiajoka says:

Anna, no, just no. But your bestie, KimK, has got your back.

Goop actually wore her hair in a damned pony-tail to the Met Gala. Jeebus! Yay, for the World’s Most Beautiful Woman!

  39. kibbles says:

If she wanted to show off her ass, this would have been the party to do that. I don’t understand wearing such a revealing dress to a movie premiere but showing up to a punk themed gala in a saccharine
pink gown. The pink gown she wore to the Oscars the year she won was more punk than this. I guess after the backlash from the ass dress, she decided to wear something safe.

  40. Patrice says:

You know what really would have (ironically) worked on Gwyneth? The entire head to toe look she wore a few years back to the Oscars. (You know, the one where she inexplicably went braless and wore super heavy dark eye makeup with the wrap around braid in her hair?) I can totally understand why everyone hated that ridiculous look for the OSCARS, but as last night’s gala theme was “punk” I think it would have been a dream 🙂 (Only with a bra of course!! Oooh. Maybe a super pointy 90’s Gaulthier one…)

    • kibbles says:

That dress would have looked pretty amazing for a punk themed event such as this one. Too bad she doesn’t know how to style herself appropriately. She’s wearing revealing or goth clothes at events where she should be dressed in a ball gown then she arrives to a punk party wearing a pink dress. Makes no sense.

Also, Chris Martin was there but I haven’t seen any photos of them actually together and interacting like a normal married couple. Those two are pretty much living separate lives. They can’t even speak to each other in the same room.

  41. janie says:

She & Anna both look worse than Kim! Good grief.. What is wrong with these women?

  42. KellyinSeattle says:

I’m surprised Gwyn didn’t wear something to show off her 22-year-old-stripper bet, and that she was kind enough to bless the Met with her presence…Carey needs some makeup and Anna’s blah.

  43. Lala says:

Carey looks so sad cause she is hungry as hell!

  44. Gwyneth looks so incredibly beautiful in that beautiful blidningly bright pink dress says:

How could you possibly think that that beautiful blindingly bright pink dress Gwyneth wore was boring and disappointing. She looked absolutely stunning and super hot sexy and extremely feminine in that beautiful blindingly bright pink dress she wore. Pink is the most feminine color fo all and is by far the most beautiful color for a girl to wearYou have absolutely horrible taste. I’m not evena Gwyneth Paltrow fan but man she looks absolutely gorgeous stunning and super feminine in that absolutely stunning beautiful blindingly bright pink dress and beautiful blindingly bright pink high heeled shoes. i onmly wish she would have also wore a beautiful blindingly bright pink headband too.

    • madchen says:

hahahahahahaha…the shoes, I’m so sure, were also hot pink…just as they should be!

  45. xxx says:

Do you know what? If Paltrow had worn that crazy sheer-sided gown the the Met Gala, it might actually have worked. It would have been the place to pull that thing off and, styled correctly, it could have worked with the theme. This pink dress is so boring and too reminiscent of her horrible Oscars dress. It doesn’t look properly fitted and for God’s sake Goopy, stand up STRAIGHT!

Carey… Yikes. Did someone kill her puppy? SMILE!! Also incredibly boring. A punk twist on office attire??

Anna… Yerk. Hate this dress. I don’t think she pays any attention to the themes though, she just does what she likes, and who cares? Who does she need to impress?
