I haven’t looked through ALL of the Met Gala photos, but from what I’ve seen, very few celebrities really had fun with the “Punk: From Chaos to Couture” theme. I’m not sure if Anne Hathaway qualifies? Anne came as a guest of Valentino – she’s ALL about Valentino these days, Valentino designed her wedding dress, she wears a lot of Valentino on red carpets, and she came close to wearing a Valentino gown for the Oscars. This particular Valentino gown is nothing special (ugh, feathers), but it acts as a blank canvas (sort of) for her dramatic hair change: Annie’s a blonde now! I don’t know if this was just something she did to be “punk” or whatever and she’ll change it in a week. It’s a pretty dramatic change for just the Met Gala, you know?
Who does Blonde Annie remind you of? I can’t put my finger on it. There’s some January Jones there. Maybe some young Brigitte Nielsen? While the blonde doesn’t suit Anne, it’s really not as bad as I thought it would be. It does make her look less princess-y and more edgy.
Guess who else radically changed up their hair for the Met Gala? Nicole Richie. Nicole went for (temporary?) white-blue-grey and a really dark fake-tan. She wore Topshop. Can I just say? I actually love this dress. This might be one of my favorite dresses that I’ve seen so far. As for her overall look – I like that she tried something different and visually interesting for the punk theme.

I think the dress was the best of the night, but she didn’t need the platinum hair. I do like how soft it looked to contrast the dress.
Her style (probaby the hair) immediately reminded me of Katherine Heigl, but with style. I actually like Hathaway’s look here, even though the dress isn’t very punk.
It’s Julia Roberts circa Tinkerhell period. Yes, just before she left Kiefer Sutherland at the alter. She had that hair and it was awful.

I actually don’t hate the hair. Maybe it might look crappy in an everyday out-and-about style, but it’s not too bad here. I’m definitely getting a bit of a January Jones vibe.

I’m not an Annie fan but I must say I think she was one of the best of the night and at least that dress had a few punk elements. No one else seemed to get close except for Madonna and Vivienne Westwood.

I think they are going for the night’s theme which was “punk”. They have to show-up in something punk related not exactly head-to-toe punk, like dressing up like Billy Joe Armstrong (that would be costumey). The two ladies opted to change their hair colors as their rebellious fashion.
I sort of agree- to me, the “theme” was the prob- punk and formal are supposed to be opposites. I give folks credit for trying- if it was supposed to be “Wear V Westwood or come naked”- they should have said that. Do like Anne’s hair- good luck with the roots!- and would have liked Nicole’s look better w/o the tan!

LOVE Nicole’s dress — however, I think the white hair was unnecessary, as it just makes her look like an octogenarian at her height and weight. Why not fit the punk theme via the dress and not the look of a powdered wig? Ugh.

Nicole’s hair looks ridiculous. It also clashes and distracts attention from the (non-Punk!!) dress. I was expecting A LOT better from her. That dress is too “pretty” for the theme. These pictures are going to haunt her.
I was just thinking @ that very notion with Nicole…these photos are going to make her cringe in a year or two; possibly sooner. Nicole could have really punked it up; she has the edgy look for it, naturally. I don’t know what she was thinking with the gray hair & that dress; there are no words to describe it..just blah!
A disaster. Anne is trying way too hard and the posing is comical. Anne, you are just an actress, not royalty. Just when I couldn’t loathe her any more, she goes and pulls somthing off like this.

My Annie comment will be below, but as a general observation: YES, THEME!!! You know what bothers me the most about these events? When the actual hosts who curate the theme (oh yes, I’m looking at you, Wintour, and your daughter bc DUH) completely, COMPLETELY ignore it. I just think it is SO insulting.

Very insulting!!! I couldn’t believe Anna Wintour’s dress when I saw it. It’s something she wears in her every day life! She out of anyone there should have been going full out with the theme, she’s the host for the love of gahd! It just proves what I’ve been saying for years – Anna Wintour has no style. Maybe she did back in the day, but she is completely out of touch now. Vogue has gone so downhill in the past decade, I rarely buy it anymore.

I think it looks appropriate for the Met Gala theme. Not visually appealing to me, but it worked for the night.
Actually, I think my problem with the Met Ball was the punk theme. I can’t stand punk style, and so all the women who were dressed appropriately for the night just looked ugly to me. Guess I am a “square” at heart. January Jones and Solange Knowles were the only women whose look I really liked.

I love that Annie is going all ‘screw you, haters!’ and totally working this look. I am also surprised by how absolutely gorgeous she works as a blonde – and that the hair change was kept secret pre-gala is a maximum-impact bonus. Good on her. I have never stopped being Team Annie but it makes me happy to see so many approving/supportive comments on here.
PS – meh on Nicole’s overall look, but I will not seize being impressed by the quality of TopShop’s custom pieces.

Pains me to say it, but Anne knocked me over with her hair. I love it. Love it. First time she’s actually looked interesting. She’s someone who I said should never wear short hair. Her long mane was 3/4th of her beauty. But as a blonde, the short cut works for her now. I’m shocked, really shocked.
Don’t think she should grow the blonde out long though. This look makes her look edgy and interesting. Maybe she’ll keep surprising us, instead of making us sick.

What’s with all these women who got a little interesting with hair and makeup, and wore a boring dress you’d see on any red carpet? I’d be a lot less likely to bleach my hair than to wear something actually punk. I’d think it’s because punk doesn’t work as “couture” on any level, but they did the same thing with the superhero theme last year, which could have worked with couture much better.

Wow, I never would’ve imagined that Anne would look so good as a blonde. This is the most attractive she’s ever been (in my opinion).
Despite the many misgivings I may have concerning Anne’s faux humility, I can set all that aside to enthusiastically say that this new hair color and cut are FANTASTIC for her. This goes to show you that a good cut and color job can take someone from a mousey drabness that annoys the masses to edgy confidence in one felt swoop.

Nicole’s hair coupled with that dress screams, granny couture! I am so over Nicole in long, drapy confections with sleeves. The looks do nothing to flatter her shape and she always appears to be drowning in fabric. As far as AnnE is concerned, I love the blonde hair. Anne Hathaway looks amazing. I think it might have looked better if she stayed with black hair, but this is more noticeable and dramatic of course.
Cinnamon toned people just can’t pull of the punk thing, as i said in an earlier post. Nicole Ritchie is with the while grey hair, right? Just not a tonal fit. Of course she looks too healthy to pull of the dead-ish unhealthy glamour of punk. I have her same coloring, and have always had to go with the moody hippy look because our skin type just glows with health no matter the make up or hair. We can be punk in some our our attitudes, but never with our look.

Anne’s here is fantastic! It actually makes her beautiful soft brown eyes stand out more. I would hate this colour on her if her hair was longer, but realy short hair always looks great in stark colours like super platinum. The dress is just okay not fantastic, but it does fit the punk theme. The nails are awful but the make up is great. Her cans look amazing! I actually cheered when I saw her hair. She’s shaking things up. She kept trying to style that hair in her natural colour and it just looked mumsy and boring, and occasionally weird. I think she looks fabulous!
