Did Alice Eve go on a 5-month spinach-only diet to get in shape for ‘STID’?

Let’s see if we can get Alice Eve to “happen”. It’s a tall order, I think, because Americans only really know her from Star Trek, and even though she’s had more film credits than we realize, she looks like about a dozen other well-known actresses. I think she looks like a mix of Amber Heard and Malin Akerman. For what it’s worth. I get the impression that Alice is more of a “name” in the UK, her home. And as such, when she’s giving interviews to the UK press, she can seem a little full of herself – read her full Telegraph interview if you want to say to yourself repeatedly, “Seriously? Is she THAT memorable?”

It is within the Telegraph interview that Alice briefly discussed how she got in shape for Star Trek Into Darkness, and now everyone is freaking out:

A week after the audition Alice Eve heard that she’d got the part – and promptly embarked on a diet consisting almost entirely of spinach, which she stayed on for the next five months.

‘The only thing I can reveal is that I haven’t eaten much apart from spinach for weeks. You’ve got to look as if you can hold your own on the Enterprise, and that means you’ve got to be in proper fighting shape.’

The shots of her in the film trailer wearing nothing but bra and pants seem sure to prompt an orgy of spinach consumption by women hoping to get into similar shape.

As well as curtailing her menu options, Eve’s part in Star Trek required her to stay put in a studio in Los Angeles throughout the shoot, which must be the longest she’d stayed in one place in years.

Usually she can be found shuttling frenetically between Los Angeles and London.

‘The Chinese say that having two homes is the way to madness,’ she says. ‘I’m not mad but I definitely wish Hollywood would move to Trafalgar Square. But the life of an actor is a life of movement, isn’t it?’

[From The Telegraph]

I read variations of those quotes in several different places. If Alice actually SAID “I ate only spinach for five months” then I really wish they would just quote her directly. But from what I can see, The Telegraph seems to be saying it, not Alice. I don’t doubt that she did do some kind of extreme diet – most actresses do, especially if they know they’re going to be in their bra and panties on film. But I doubt Alice ate only spinach for five months straight. At least, I hope she didn’t.

I dunno, it seemed to work for Popeye…

  2. Eleonor says:

I don’t know who is she, but I’m totally in love with that dress!

  3. T.Fanty says:

She says she hasn’t eaten much apart from spinach. That’s a figure of speech. It was probably a quite horrible spinach-based diet. This is a storm in a teacup.

Since I saw the Alice Eve/Simon Pegg interview, I’m inclined to like her a little more.

    • Liv says:

Though I’m pretty glad I’m not an actress or a model!

    • karmasabiatch! says:

      T.Fanty, ITA.

I’ve always thought Alice was a bit inscrutable, I never could get a read on her personality enough to decide whether I liked her or not.

She was darling in the interview with Simon Pegg. Can’t remember who posted that link yesterday, but thanks so much!

    • Amelia says:

If it was at all possible to be slightly miffed with Simon Pegg, I would be because of his Tweet of that video!
The two of them are really quite funny together.
Although I really don’t think that she’s particularly well known here in Blighty. I didn’t have a clue who she was until Star Trek promo started. I’ll have a peek at her credits, see what she’s been in . . .
Also, anyone seen the teaser trailer for World’s End?
The preliminary plan at the moment is for a group of us from work to 1.) Go see the film.
2.) Devise an epic pub crawl immediately afterwards.

  4. BlackDuck says:

Her eyes are amazing! And, I can’t wait to see Star Trek 😀

  5. Jane says:

Clearly not or she would be dead.

    • dinah says:

Yes. Despite her small waist, she has a good booty and some well muscled calves. Muscles and a prolonged protein starvation are mutually exclusive.

      • Ryan says:

Spinach is relatively high in protein for not being flesh or an animal by-product.

“The only thing I can reveal is that I haven’t eaten much apart from spinach for weeks. You’ve got to look as if you can hold your own on the Enterprise, and that means you’ve got to be in proper fighting shape.”

That doesn´t make any sense at all. You are not strong enough to fight when you only live on spinach.

She seems like an airhead who thinks she is so deep and intellectual, like a poor man´s Natalie Portman.

  7. Faye says:

I saw her a few years ago in a comedy with Jay Baruchel, and she was really cute and funny, I thought. I wouldn’t mind seeing her in some more movies.

Very much doubt she lived only on spinach; she looks pretty healthy here, and not overly thin at all. Probably a figure of speech.

    • Badirene says:

You should check her out in Starter For Ten, James Mcavoy and Benedict Cumberbatch are in it as well. Its pretty funny.

    • Dhavynia says:

Love Out My League! Shes cute there but the rest if the cast is really funny. I also her in Crossing Over with Harrison Ford and she plays an illegal alien who sleeps with Ray Liotta’s character in order to obtain legal status here. It was pure drama and she did nude scenes (she does have a great body) way different than the comedies I’ve seen her in. Shes not bad but shes not Oscar worthy, the again neither was Anne or Natalie IMO

      • Belle says:

She’s Out of My League… hilarious! I have this movie and just grabbed it from the cabinet… on the back it says: “A blend of the sweet and the raunchy and has it’s heart in the right place.” (Peter Travers- Rolling Stone) I think this is spot on… sweet but very raunchy… and FUNNY 🙂

I think this is the only movie I’ve seen her in… but look forward to her in Star Trek. She looks great in the pictures above, though I do think she was a bit curvier in She’s Out of My League. Lovely either way though… and I doubt she ate only spinach. Probably just a strict, healthy diet with a lot of veggies!

      • Dani says:

She’s the girl from Out Of My League???? She was sooo good in it! And her body was amazing then too.

  8. ALG says:

Anne Hathaway ate oatmeal paste for a few weeks and became emaciated. If Alice Eve ate nothing but spinach for 5 months, she wouldn’t be the (completely normal) size that she is.

She really is quite basic. Star Trek fans are freaking out over a few things regarding ID…

  9. mrspatrickbateman says:

She looks kind of like Hilary Swank in the last picture.

  10. Karen says:

Starve yourself to look like you can hold your own and fight? I bet she just ate spinach with most meals: egg whites and spinach, steamed fish and spinach, grilled chicken and spinach….

  11. Miss C says:

at the STID premiere in london she actually looked good. but there’s something about her face that makes me uncomfortable. there’s this thing she always does with her mouth to look sexy or whatever she thinks she’s doing. people say she’s intelligent etc. just because she went to oxford but i doubt that she is THAT smart. she’s only been there because of her parents name or whatever reason and to get into uni to study english isn’t that difficult these days. to me she comes across as smug and full of herself not sweet and classy at all. but it’s no surprise when everybody including your collegues(you probably hooked up with) are telling you you’re a 10. how can someone even take her seriously when all she can do is to play the same sort of character?? like with no substance. what good was oxford then?? but well what do you expect of a woman who says in an interview things like she’s pining for a partner because she’s got a high sex-drive. that’s not me being prude i just don’t think it’s classy. people like her annoy me. she’s just so overrated.

  12. Stace says:

If you’re wanting to look like you can hold your own and get it “fighting shape”, then you are not on a mostly spinach diet. Period.

  13. Stubbylove says:

Spinach aside, the dress and styling here is perfection.

  14. RobN says:

She overstated her diet for effect. People do it all the time and actresses seem especially susceptible to it. She seems pretty and all, but I don’t think there’s anything that separates her from the rest of the young actresses.

  15. andi says:

I had the unfortunate experience of meeting her at fashion week and i can honestly say she is the most undeserving person- not only did she insist on her assistant sitting with her on the front row, t meant that another well known pregnant star had to stand in heels for the ten-minute show. a total diva, without the actual status.

    • Jany says:

Oh jeez, but I’m not surprised. Never warmed up to her, and I tried. And from the ST cast I prefer Zoe Saldana. Real sweetheart I think.

    • Amanda says:

I don’t doubt it, like you said, she’s a diva without the actual status.

  16. Al says:

She looks like Rachel Taylor to me.

  17. Patrice says:

First off, saying “The only thing I can reveal is that I haven’t eaten much apart from spinach for weeks.” is NOT the same thing as saying that she “ONLY ate spinach for months.” God, I seriously hate how dramatic and free with taking liberties about twisting around what was actually said by someone these publications have become.

As anyone with a few brain cells and/or the most basic knowledge of the human body can tell you, NO ONE would survive that nevermind look like they were in healthy “proper fighting shape.” At best they would be laying in a hospital bed barely hanging on to life from extreme vitamin, calorie, fat, calcium, copper and protein deficiency just for starters. Not to mention that her skin would be sallow and her hair falling out. Even full blown anorexics don’t become that way overnight and that is key to their survival in such a malnourished, calorically deprived state; their bodies grow accustomed to it over time.

I really just wish actors and the press would stop lying at every turn. It’s completely bizarre and very frustrating.

  18. Patrice says:

P.S. I actually know her best from the 2nd Sex and the City movie in which she played Charlotte’s braless Irish nanny. Lol. Admittedly she was much curvier (and gorgeous!) in that film and her skin not as washed out and dry looking as it is in these pics so I don’t doubt that she went to some sort of dieting extreme for Star Trek. It’s just impossible to believe the story that’s being shilled here for the reasons I stated in my post above.

Oh, and she also played the female “bombshell” lead in “She’s Out of My League” (which I never saw).

  19. jwoolman says:

She must have been exaggerating. Spinach is a very healthy green with loads of iron and calcium which long-time vegetarians get very good at absorbing, and it’s very tasty raw used the same way as any good lettuce can be (base for salads, in sandwiches, as the holder for sandwich fillings, or just all by itself for munching). But if she was trying to lose weight for some reason, there are loads of other greens and non-starchy veggies to eat that can be used as the basis for a “diet” along with other good stuff such as some nuts and seeds and a good portion of beans. She probably was just eating more spinach than she usually does and so it loomed large in her mind.

  20. Patrice says:

@Jwoolman: I’m actually a very health concious long-term vegan (largely due to serious food allergies) so I know all about the merits of spinach 🙂 And while it’s very true that it does contain some, it is not in fact full of “loads” of calcium; and certainly not enough for a person to survive on. That said, no one, not even us or raw foodists can/nor would ever try to survive off of a single vitamin rich food or vegetable alone-it’s completely incomprehensible, even in the short-term! That’s why I’m completely in agreement with you about the fact that she was likely exaggerating. And clearly the reporter took liberties from there…

  21. Carolyn says:

I’ve just realised what STID means…have been wondering this for a few days now 🙂

Yep, no-one could possibly exist on just spinach. A shame that this is the only newsworthy part of her interview that has been picked up. I’m sure she would have said a few more interesting things than this. That’s Hollywood for ya.

  22. Bijlee says:

I’ve seen interviews with this girl and she just strikes me as really dumb and ditzy.

  23. Bronwyn says:

This dress is awful…it’s such an unflattering length and color on her. and she definitely has some meat on her bones. she looks good, not like she has just been eating leaves.
not sure what is wrong with her face in these pics…she looks like she is smelling something quite terrible in all of them!
