Seth Meyers will replace Jimmy Fallon as host of ‘Late Night’: good pick?

Seth Meyers

The shuffle continues amongst hosts of NBC’s various nighttime talk shows. Of course, virtually no one was upset when Jay Leno announced that he’d finally (and for the second time) retire to tend to his classic car collection while handing the “Tonight Show” to Jimmy Fallon. NBC’s decision for a successor seemed like a natural choice even if Fallon is still pretty green — at this point, he’s only been hosting “Late Night” for four years — because, who else? I think Fallon will do okay, but I tend to think almost anyone could do better than Leno. Yesterday, NBC announced its replacement for Fallon, and once again, the job is going to go to a very white male, but congratulations to Seth Meyers of “SNL” fame! I love the guy still identifies mainly as a writer instead of simply as a personality. Here are the details:

Seth Meyers

It’s official: Saturday Night Live’s Seth Meyers is NBC’s new late-night host.

NBC will hand the reins of the Late Night franchise to the SNL head writer and Weekend Update anchor next year.

Meyers will take over the 12:35 a.m. slot after current host Jimmy Fallon vacates the show to take over The Tonight Show from Jay Leno. Meyers has been the odds-on favorite to assume the post since March, as SNL executive producer Lorne Michaels is also the executive producer on Late Night.

“We think Seth is one of the brightest, most insightful comedy writers and performers of his generation,” said NBC entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt. “His years at SNL’s Weekend Update desk, not to mention being head writer of the show for many seasons, helped him hone a topical brand of comedy that is perfect for the Late Night franchise.”

“I only have to work for Lorne for five more years before I pay him back for the time I totaled his car,” Meyers said. “Twelve-thirty on NBC has long been incredible real estate. I hope I can do it justice.”

Last fall the Emmy-winning Meyers returned for his 12th season on SNL, eighth season as head writer and seventh season as Weekend Update anchor. The Late Night with Seth Meyers premiere date was not announced, but debut either during or right after NBC’s coverage of the Winter Olympics is likely. Sources say Meyers will remain working on SNL through the fall until he has to begin preparations to take over Late Night. Michaels is executive producer; Michael Shoemaker will act as producer.

So with Last Call recently renewed, that means NBC’s new late-night lineup will go as follows: Jimmy Fallon, Seth Meyers, Carson Daly.

Is this a good move? Probably. “SNL” isn’t drawing huge ratings lately, but a familiar face from that show is a good match for the “Late Night” timeslot as Jimmy Fallon’s success has shown. Still, it’s a real shame that nighttime talk continues to be dominated by white males, right? Between Fallon, Meyers, David Letterman, Jimmy Kimmel, Conan O’Brien, and Craig Ferguson, it’s all about the caucasian dudes. No diversity, and no women. That is, except Chelsea Handler, who isn’t exactly a sterling example of the female species.

Hopefully, Seth’s handling of the reins won’t turn into one big yawn. :rimshot:

That’s great news: I *love* Seth Meyers. And he’s going to be much funnier than Fallon.

  2. janie says:

I think it’s great news too! I love Seth Meyers, he’ll be fun to watch! Congrats Seth!!

  3. Feebee says:

I like Seth and his humour but he’s not as versatile a performer as Fallon. Though I suppose that means Late Night’s style will follow more Conan than Fallon?

NBC seems a little boys clubbie.

What does this mean for SNL?

  4. Katie says:

He’s a good pick as long as he doesn’t write anything for the show. SNL has been awful since he became the head writer.

Then again, I thought Jimmy Can’t-Get-Through-A-Sketch-Without-Breaking Fallon was a poor choice for a talk show host and look how wrong I was about that (I think? I don’t watch late night TV.)

When Fallon would break down laughing, it would always make me crack up. I guess it made it seem like they were all really having fun.
Chris Farley (I LOVED him) and Will Farrell were notorious for cracking everyone else up during sketches. I guess I always loved that skill/power.

      • Amy says:

I grew up loving “The Carol Burnett Show” in syndicated reruns, and they cracked themselves up every episode.

  5. Amy says:

    Team CraigyFerg!

But this isn’t a bad choice.

Does this mean “Weekend Update” is now the unofficial training ground for late night talk hosts? (Although it didn’t work too well for Dennis Miller, but there were other factors, i.e. nuttiness, involved there). In that case, where are Tina Fey and Amy Poehler’s talk shows?

    • Kate says:

I know! Craig Ferguson is masterful and smart and warm and funny.

That said, I love Seth Meyers. He is beyond crush-worthy. He’s a good straight man. I hope they both do well, with a slight edge to CraigyFerg.

    • Renee says:

Thank you Amy!! Your comment gave me my first laugh of the day.

    • EmmaStoneWannabe says:

I would totally watch a Tina Fey late night show!

    • KB says:

Amy’s fine where she is, starring on the best comedy on television!

  6. Emma says:

Meh. I would have really liked a woman. At least now SNL might stop sucking.

  7. Apsutter says:

Great pick!!! Just saw his standup act last month and he was hilarious. He has such an easygoing affable charm that you just can’t fake.

  8. Lisa says:

I only watch SNL for the Weekend Update. The rest of the show has been unbearably bad for a long time. Wake up, Lorne, and improve the show! There have to be better comedy writers out there!

  9. Melissa says:

I like Seth Meyers, but I am really sick of the lack of diversity on late-night talk shows. I really loved Aisha Tyler when she did Talk Soup, and think she would be a great late-night host.

  10. KB says:

I think it’s fantastic news, Seth is perfect for it

  11. Anna says:

I have a problem with the statement “almost anyone could do better than Leno.”

Leno stayed on as long as he did because he brought in ratings. Like him personally or not, like his program or not, but it was one of the very few hits on NBC.

Also, his particular brand of non-edgy humor appealed to the particular demo that actually watches TV (=older folks). The Jimmy’s (Kimmel, Fallon) might go viral, but their fan base rarely sits around waiting to watch the shows live. I think that was the main problem with Conan taking over Leno’s slot. It’s not always about the inherent quality of a product, but its suitability for a particular market (here: time, audience). So I wouldnt be popping the champagne at NBC quite yet.

    • emma says:

my dad really likes Leno, and doesn’t really get Conan. I’m the other way around, but there IS an audience for Leno.

  12. Msmlnp says:

I’ve been a late night TV watcher for as long as I can remember (damn you insomnia). Not a Seth Myers fan at all, he always seems so smug. On another note, Im loving how bitchy Letterman has been these past few years.

  13. Onyx XV says:

Leno announced that he wants to retire? I find that hard to believe. Not the announcement, but that HE actually wants to. NBC must have lost their ever loving mind to try this nonsense again. However small The Tonight Show audience may be, it’s pretty clear they want Jay Leno for the host and no one else. Has the whole Conan debacle already been forgotten? Fallon will bomb – he’s too juvenile for The Tonight Show. Meyers will bomb – he has zero charisma. And then they’ll be trying to get Jay back again… SMH

  14. Wd says:

Even since he got snarky about the rights of foreign invaders on SNL, I’ve refused to watch him.

  15. Wd says:

Still, it’s a real shame that nighttime talk continues to be dominated by white males, right?

    _______

So what? What do you have against White males? Daytime TV is dominated by lesbians. Do you complain about that?

  16. emma says:

I’m sure he’ll be a good host, but I’ve never really liked him all that much.

  17. Amy says:

If they had wanted to go with a woman, I would have picked Tina Fey. Her show ended so she’s got spare time on her hands! Though maybe with two young children not so much. Or even Amy Poehler, but I think she’s on Parks and Rec. It would be nice to have some women thrown in the comedy talk show line up (apart from Chelsea Handler).

  18. MsTaken says:

I LOVE Fallon. He’s got a boyish charm & is intelligent & witty, but doesn’t have a mean streak.

Seth is *meh* to me. It’s like on WU he’s always trying to do Fallon’s schtick of breaking character & grinning at his own jokes, but it doesn’t feel authentic to me. And he’s not a great head writer.

Tina Fey is the all-time BEST head writer ever & her WU with Fallon killed every week. I’ll still watch those sketches in rerun, but not anyone else’s cuz I like to laugh, not just pass the time
