Matt Smith (Dr. Who) got a buzzcut for Ryan Gosling’s new film: would you hit it?

Is Matt Smith the current Dr. Who? I’m sorry I don’t know that, Whovians. I think he’s the “current” one although he’ll probably be replaced soon enough. Matt Smith replaced David Tennant, I know that one. Tennant seemed to quit the Dr. Who gig because he wanted bigger and better parts – check out Tennant’s IMDB page. He’s been working a lot, but mostly in England and mostly on television (no disrespect, I’m just saying that he’s not a movie star). But will Matt Smith be the modern Dr. Who that can manage a major leap to Hollywood? This is his chance – he got a sizeable part in Ryan Gosling’s directorial debut, How To Catch A Monster. These are some photos from the LA set.

Gosling apparently told Matt to shave his head, which is… hmm… I don’t know. THIS is what he looks like with his glorious floppy hair. And without the floppy hair… he looks like a heroin addict slash skinhead d-bag. His character’s name is “Bully” so maybe he’s supposed to look scary and threatening as opposed to charmingly floppy-haired. Maybe it’s totally right for the film. But I definitely would NOT hit it, which is saying a lot because you know my dong comfort zone is “pale, tall, accented men with dark hair.”

Gosling’s How To Catch A Monster also includes Saoirse Ronan, Eva Mendes, Christina Hendricks and Ben Mendelsohn. Ryan wrote the screenplay and he’s producing it too. The basic ploy: “A single mother is swept into a dark underworld, while her teenage son discovers a road that leads him to a secret underwater town.” Ugh. It sounds… like it’s going to be trying too hard to be artsy.

I still would. I like him more than Tennant.

    • EscapedConvent says:

Well, Fanty, clearly I have to get up pretty early in the damn morning to beat you to a British Boy post.

I thought today might be that day. Tomorrow I am getting up at 5 a.m. ;-(

    • boredbrit says:

Whaaaat?! I prefer Tennant any day. Plus, Doctor Who was just better back then have stopped watching now because its utter drivel.

      • EscapedConvent says:

        @boredbrit,

I must agree. I loved David Tennant as the Doctor, but I will admit that I haven’t given Matt Smith a fair chance.

It’s possible that I wouldn’t have been keen on anyone who took over the role from Tennant. I guess I was pretty attached to the 10th Doctor, & the show itself during the regime of both 9th & 10th Doctors.

      • T.Fanty says:

Off on school run. I will be back to defend my choice…

      • Bella Bella says:

        TENNANT FOREVER!!

      • franatic says:

Matt’s a fantastic actor and he makes for a fantastic Doctor as well. The show’s just gone to shit because now Steven Moffat’s in charge.

      • jaye says:

I LOVED David Tennant as Dr. Who. He played him, I think, a little more whimsically than Eccelston, who seemed to play the Doctor with a bit more gravitas.

When Tennant left I made a promise to myself that I would NOT like this new one, but Matt Smith won me over. He plays the role with energy and he’s funny and the Doctor/Amy/Rory/River combo was awesome. I immediately lost interest when Amy and Rory left. I haven’t watched much of the new season.

    • GoodCapon says:

      I like ’em all 😉

However I do have a soft spot for Christopher Eccleston mostly because I’m going against the grain– he only did one season so people tend to ignore his Doctor stint– but also because I MISS his accent. I also find him cute in a weird way.

      • Amy says:

        Wonderful chap, all of them.

I had a hard time warming to Eccleston at first. I was a classic Whovian, and he seemed so different from what had gone before. He didn’t seem like the Doctor to me. By the end of his series, he had convinced me, and I was weeping, “That guy WAS the Doctor all along!”

    • Kristine says:

ugh he looks like tosh with his head shaved…

    • T.Fanty says:

      Okay, so…
      – Eccleston is a great actor, but CLEARLY did not want to be there after the first episode. I also found his forced attempts at spontaneity almost painful to watch. He’s off my list.
      – Tennant. I liked Tennant until Matt Smith arrived. Tennant to me, was the EMO doctor. I just got to the point at which I was waiting every episode for him to stop and stare at something (or someone) with tear-filled eyes. We get it, David. This may be flippant and fun, but you are still an ACTOR. Unfortunately, Doctor Who isn’t Hamlet. It got a little overwrought as it went on, and I couldn’t even finish his final episode.

Matt Smith, I think conveys a good sense of the Doctors that I grew up with. He’s energetic, fun, yet commanding. The depths are there, yet well-hidden. For that reason, when he kicks it up a gear (like when he’s on Stonehenge in the Pandorica episode), I sit up and listen. I think he’s perfect for the role, and only getting better as he goes along. The Angels in Manhattan was a devastating episode, and I think Tennant would have destroyed the nuances of that scene by just feeling too damn much. And the Doctor/River Song combo is HOT.

That said, I’m not loving recent episodes with Clara. Amy and Rory really worked because they balanced out the doctor, but Clara is just too twee. Cute is not a personality. She doesn’t have anything notable to her character other than dying a lot, and she hasn’t done that for a while, so she’s a bit pointless. And don’t even get me started on the kids (*sideeye Neil Gaiman*).

      Consider that my opening statement.

      • Amy says:

I adore David Tennant, but I do think Matt Smith has a classic Doctor vibe. “There’s no point in growing up if you can’t be childish sometimes!”

    • olaf78 says:

      DOCTOR WHO
      not Dr.

      Sorry to nitpick

  2. gee says:

I think he looks 100% better.

  3. marie says:

I like him as Dr. Who, so yes I would even with that awful jacket. Didn’t we leave those damn things in the 80’s?!?

  4. Samigirl says:

One of my friends who is a Whovian in EVERY sense of the word, DID NOT appreciate me posting this on her Facebook page. Her exact words were “IS NOTHING SACRED?!” Followed by some expletives. I bet she would still hit it though! And seeing his stomach, I probably would too! 😉

  5. EscapedConvent says:

I thought the one thing Matt Smith had going for him was his floppy hair.

I am well aware that there are ladies who find Matt hot & “tres bangable.” But I swear to God if any of them keep calling my husband Cumby an earthworm or a polliwog after seeing these pics of Matt…..

    POW!! Right in the kisser!

    • T.Fanty says:

Oh my. You are a feisty one today.

    • Faye says:

Ditto. I think he looks like a thug with that haircut, and with way less charisma than Cumby.

      • honey says:

You cant compare cumbertwat and Matt. Matt is like 10 years younger. And way cuter.

      • Faye says:

Well, personally I think he looks like a Neo-Nazi with this haircut. And younger doesn’t always = cuter.

But vive le difference. We’re all entitled to our own celeb crushes, and that’s okay – especially because they all remain equally unaccessible to us in our actual real lives :).

    • jaye says:

LOL! You made me snort Coke! (the soda, not the drug)

  6. Insomniac says:

I actually think he looks hotter like this, and I have no idea why. I loved the floppy hair, too.

  7. Dorothy#1 says:

Yes Matt Smith is the current Doctor and I like him as the dr but there is no way in hell I would hit this. David Tennant I would over and over and over. I heard he quit Doctor Who to do an American show but it ended up never bring shown. Poor David, maybe he can regenerate back into the Doctor.

    • Al says:

He’ll be back for the anniversary special later this year. I can’t wait!

Tennant was my favourite doctor, but it was time for him to move on. It took me a while to warm up (because i missed Tennant so much) but I like Matt Smith as the Doctor.

  8. Bianca says:

I too like him more than Tennant. He’s my favourite Doctor! (Also, I sincerely hope that his hair grows back REALLY fast.)

  9. Poppy says:

Quite hard, not as hard as with the floppy hair though. It would be a ‘placeholder’ bang, to tide me over till the hair grew back.

  10. Norman Bates' Mother says:

Yes, Matt is the current Doctor and he will stay for at least another season. I hate this buzzcut and the wardrobe for this movie but I would still hit it. He is one of my biggest celeb crushes and it was never about his looks. He isn’t the most handsome guy out there but I love his bubbly personality and great sense of humour. He seems like a genuinely nice and fun guy in real life and I like his Doctor more than Tennant’s (although as a major Whovian, I still liked the Tenth very much). I hope he’ll have the time to grow his hair back for the new DW season though. Even big budget productions have problems with finding good wigs (Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow) and finding one resembling Matt’s signature floppy hair would probably end up a disaster. Karen Gillan/Amy Pond wore wig last season and it was awful.

  11. j.eyre says:

    Crispin Glover?

  12. Sisi says:

I thought Tennant stopped as the Doctor because he wanted to go back to stage acting.

  13. mom2two says:

I don’t find Matt attractive looks wise…but reading interviews with him makes him attractive to me (if that makes sense, I’m not sure it does)…he comes across like a guy you could have a beer with and would be easy to talk to.
That being said, I prefer him with longer hair. I know this look for the Ryan Gosling movie and I am assuming he’s not playing a good guy in this one. Glad he is branching out from Dr. Who.

    • T.Fanty says:

His interviews are lovely. He just seems like such a nice sunny person.

I also think he looks like a sweet and happy stoner. The type of person that would get baked, turn up to a family dinner and spend the whole time sweet-talking your mum.

  14. GoodCapon says:

NOOOOOOOOO I like Matt the Doctor but Matt in real life? I’ll pass!

And I don’t know whose fault it is, but the second half of the current season is a bit flat to me. 99% of the episodes are okay but easily forgettable. Even Neil Gaiman pitching in did nothing for me.

    • LAK says:

I adore Neil Gaiman, but i didn’t know he pitched in to DR Who universe, which makes sense since that is right up his alley.

I was attached to the tenth Dr, so i haven’t watched more than 2 episodes of this Dr. Saw him in a play once. i find his alien looks too distracting after the tenth Dr.

However, as a creature in a Neil Gaiman universe, makes perfect sense.

ps:- Did you know there is a new book scheduled for June release, already optioned by Tom Hanks for a film? title isn’t released yet, but i shall be at the book store first thing.

    • Amy says:

David would be my ideal Crowley in Good Omens

  15. allons-y alonso says:

As a massive Whovian, I can’t not put my 2 cents in

I love Matt Smith’s 11th Doctor – I agree with T.Fanty first comments. Matt Smith has quickly become my favourite Doctor.

I know my moniker is Tennant’s 10th Doctor catch phrase, but I must say, I really think Tennant overstayed his welcome on the show – he and Russel T. Davis turned it a little gimmicky.

Christopher Eccleston was perfection as well – he left me wanting more….

hmmmmm….seems I’ve geeked out a bit here. Apologies, celebitches.

    • Norman Bates' Mother says:

I’m all for geeking out and I agree with everything you wrote. The Eleventh is my favourite Doctor – Matt’s take on the role is refreshing after the tiring Tenth in his last season. I say it as a Whovian, who would probably still be loyal to the show even if Kellan “Kellan Lutz” Lutz played the part and someone who likes David Tennant in other things just fine. I loved him in Broadchurch where he played more grounded character but I think he made a caricature of the Doctor with all this shouting and whining and goggling and weird tongue movements. I enjoyed episodes he was in but something was always off with his performance. Plus I hated Rose. Donna was my favourite companion and I wish we could see her with 11th. It would probably be the most hilarious pairing.

      • allons-y alonso says:

I can understand why people dislike Rose (I liked her despite her selfish bitchiness towards the end). Then again it took me a very long time to warm to Amy Pond. My favourite companion is Martha Jones….and Rory. I love Rory.

      • Amy says:

I hate Rose Tyler, but it isn’t really her fault. I think I would have liked her fine if the show hadn’t built her up so much that she was like, the most totally awesome companion ever, and the Doctor just lurves her and they should snog all the time. I’m a fan since the ’80s, and you know what? The Doctor has has LOTS of awesome companions, and he didn’t need to snog them, either. So I guess I got defensive in fighting for the honor of Sarah Jane Smith and Romana and Jamie and Leela and Ace (love Ace), et cetera. Since then, I’ve become quite fond of Martha, Donna, River and Amy and Rory. I think Rose was just oversold.

To answer the original question, I find no need to “hit” Matt Smith, hair or no hair, although he is a delightful Doctor.

David Tennant, however, is my forever dong. I used to use the phrase “sop that man up with a biscuit,” but the new usage of the term “biscuit” makes that a bit more graphic than I’d intended.

      • Dorothy#1 says:

Martha was my favorite too! I did like Rose but then her face started to distract me, she kept messing with it. BUT I can’t wait til the new episode next week which has David Tennant and Rose in it!!!

      • EscapedConvent says:

I wasn’t crazy about Rose either—not sure why. I didn’t dislike her. But I *loved* Martha Jones. Was sorry she left. Then once I got used to Donna Noble, I fell in love with her character. I had to warm up to her. And I loved her Grandad.

        Wow, I miss Dr. Who.

      • Norman Bates' Mother says:

@ allons-y – I love Rory too. And Wilfred Mott – Donna’s grandfather. I still don’t know what to think about Clara. I liked her as Oswin – the Dalek and even as the governess in The Snowmen but right now she is just another companion whose main purpose is to be flirty with the Doctor (the mystery part is not developed enough to make me more interested). Maybe I just don’t like when the Doctor and his companion spend half their time making googly eyes at each other. Donna had no interest in the Doctor and her other traits were more developed because she didn’t waste time trying to make him fall in love with her. The 4th season wasn’t that good because of Tennant’s overacting but I was able to still enjoy it because of the lack of forced love story (apart from the brief Rose’s comeback).

      • Amy says:

I have to wonder if DT is playing real Ten or Meta-Crisis Clone Ten.

I have to go on record as saying “I HATE the Doctor in any kind of love story with a human companion.” I’m a traditionalist as far as that goes. Unless, you know, we’re talking about the Tenth Doctor and ME, in which case I’ll make an exception (glances over at the cardboard David Tennant in the corner of her office)

      • Norman Bates' Mother says:

Dorothy#1 – Rose and Ten (or Ten2) won’t be there next week. They will be in the 50th anniversary special which will air on 23rd November. River Song, Madame Vastra, Jenny and Strax will be in the finale next week.

      • Reece says:

I didn’t dislike Rose so much as the makeup dept with that TERRIBLE eyeliner and mascara she was always in. It was distracting.
Martha I liked in the beginning but then her story became too much “I’m in love with the Doctor”. Her walking away made me continue liking her.
Donna and Rory or Amy/Rory (Amy w/out Rory I could not stand)are my absolute favorites.
Clara so far I’m just not impressed either way. There’s nothing happening with her, it’s just been a bunch of random episodes. Including the show this past week which I thought was best so far (found out afterwards it was Neil Gaiman’s). The kids I found annoying but at least it was something. I just love Warwick Davis in everything.

      • Amy says:

@Axis– not sure why my response to you is way up here– they should have offered C.E.any amount of money and sexual favors and a free puppy to come back.

That said,I’m hoping for nods to all the classic Doctors. I know none of the actors are returning besides DT, but I hope they use clips or something to pay homage. Companions, too! It is the 50th, after all. The plot and writing should be more important than everything else, but I hope they give enough nods to make us old-timers happy. 🙂

As far as adjusting to the new doc, it takes a while sometimes, but I can say from experience it’s possible! I’m not sure I wanted to like the new show at all, but it won me over

    • allons-y alonso says:

@Amy: my thoughts on the 50th anniversary episode – I suspect we will see meta-crisis 10. On a related note, even though I knew Christopher Eccleston would never come back and do the anniversary special, my heart broke a little when it was confirmed he turned it down.

@Norman Bates’ Mother: I agree with everything you have said. I’m not sure what to think of Clara either….River song will kill if she tries anything 😛

      • Jenna says:

Lawd…I can’t stand River Song. Am I the only one happy about the fact that next week might be her last episode?! *fingers crossed* 😛

      • Norman Bates' Mother says:

I suspected the same as you alons-y alonso but photos from the set show Tennant in the brown suit and long coat. Ten2/meta-crisis 10 was wearing the blue suit.

The situation with River Song is another thing that bothers me about Clara. Doctor is still married to River. The wedding might not have been valid like some people claim but they both agreed they were married and called each other husband and wife so what is the Doctor doing there hugging, kissing and flirting with Clara? River will be in the finale and I hope she will make the big scene and the Doctor will have to explain himself. I am not the biggest River fan but it would be funny and I like her more than Clara. I’ll take the official wife who only appears in 2 or 3 episodes per season over yet another love story with the companion any time.

      • Jenna says:

@NormanBates: I think I read somewhere that by the time the Doctor was in Victorian London with the Governess version of Clara, that time had already passed enough for River to have died; I’m all for flirting with Clara even if he’s “married”. I hated Moffat’s creation of the character so much. Oy.

      • Norman Bates' Mother says:

@ Jenna – it can’t be true because River will be in the next episode, so she is still very much alive. And she died in the library, when the Tenth incarnation was still there. Her timeline goes backwards but they can meet at every point of their timelines. He already saw her birth and death, and she implied that she met all 11 incarnations.

      • Jenna says:

@Norman: I think they’re going into the Doctor’s own timeline which may explain her being in the episode.

      • Norman Bates' Mother says:

Doctor might cross his own timeline in the 50th anniversary special (and meet Rose and Ten) but the finale this week will have both River and Clara at the same time and no other Doctors or companions. The title of the episode is “The Name of the Doctor” and River said to the Tenth in the library that she knows his name but she still doesn’t know it in the show. He was supposed to tell her during their wedding but he didn’t because he was inside the Teselecta and he only told her to look into his eye. There is at least one unresolved thing with alive River Song to show us and Moffat has said that River is his favourite character to write. I doubt he would get rid off her just like that. She will probably stick for another seasons but she will apear sparsely because Alex Kingston is busy.

      • Axis2ClusterB says:

I was upset by the lack of 9 and the lack of Captain Jack in the 50th. I’m slowly warming to Matt Smith (I know, I know, but 10 is my Doctor and Matt has required adjustment on my part, lol).

      • T.Fanty says:

I hope River Song sticks around. I like her. I had a massive eyeroll moment when I first saw Alex Kingston, but as it has gone on, I think she’s fantastic as River Song. I agree with the comments above that say the doctor’s companions work best when flirtation is taken out of the equation, and I think right now, that being sparkly and pretty is all that Clara has got going for her. I can’t imagine why the Doctor would ever want a silly little girl like that when River Song is in the picture.

      • Jenna says:

I honestly think River is a waste of a character, IMO, since she could’ve be written up as SO much more. But, seeing as it’s Moffat, it hasn’t happened. As such she can come across as pushy & jealous. And she’s been in three seasons now (here and there) and companions never stick around; I have no problem with her going. I honestly don’t see the chemistry between her and her ‘husband’.

      • franatic says:

I hope to god River’s going after this one. She has the potential to be an interesting character but, being written by one of the misogynistic men in Britain, she’s still as one-dimensional as most of the other women on New Who and he’s pushed her so much it’s unbearable.

  16. GeeMoney says:

I would have to pass on Matt Smith… I love him as Doctor Who and I think he’s a good actor, but he’s a little too skinny and funny looking for my taste.

  17. dcypher1 says:

He looks way better as Dr who. If I had to pick between which Dr who Is the hottest tennant wins but by an inch I think matt is hot too I really can’t decide. I would take a ride in their tardis any day.

  18. Dangerfox says:

Matt Smith without Doctor Who hair looks a lot like Daniel Tosh.

  19. Jenna says:

As Matt Smith, no…not really. As the Doctor, probably. As an evil Doctor (ala Nightmare in Silver), oh sweet baby!jesus, YES! YES! YES! Is that weird? Too much? o_O

    • Dorothy#1 says:

I agree, I aways like the doctor better when he seems a little evil 🙂

    • Al says:

I loved those scenes in the latest episode. I bet Matt Smith had a lot of fun filming them!

  20. drea says:

Well, Matt Smith has never strayed into “Hit or quit?” territory for me. As in, I never asked the question. Didn’t ask it with David Tennant either. I think it’s just the way I see the Doctor, something about an innate association with innocence. Eccleston? Well, he was different, and I think he was meant to be a little sexier.

    • Amy says:

yeah, I don’t like to think of the Doctor in that way. Even my crush on David Tennant is largely “out-of-character” if that makes any sense. The Doctor’s almost 1,000 years old and an alien–if I think of him getting with any of his human companions, it becomes a little pedobear. I always liked the idea that even when he was surrounded by nubile young birds, they were all completely safe with him.

    • Axis2ClusterB says:

Eccleston was the only Doctor that I could picture doing the deed.

  21. Kat says:

I wish him the best, he has the potential to be a versatile actor even if a lot of people don’t like his portrayal of The Doctor.

  22. Reece says:

In answer to the post. YES! He’s goofy and I like it.

  23. dunzo says:

mmmm… he’s not my type (too thin and too boyish), but he looks totally hot in those pics, I have a thing for scary drug addict guys lol.

  24. Emily Grace says:

I totally still would! Personally, I love him. I love him as the Doctor, and I think he’s sweet when out of character, too. The only thing I dislike about his shaved head is that you can see his massive scar from when he got 24 stitches as a kid. Poor Matty!

  25. DeltaJuliet says:

OK, I don’t watch Dr. Who and I never have so I can say with a completely objective point of view that that is one ugly man. Seriously.

    • Amy says:

My best friend in college and I never saw eye-to-eye regarding my Doctor Who obsession, which she called “A succession of unattractive British men.” Of course, that was before the current series.

      • DeltaJuliet says:

        LOL well-stated
I should point out that my distaste for his appearance is not why I don’t watch. But when I see “would you hit it?” and then that face/bod…just…no.

    • Jessica says:

Clearly you don’t watch Doctor Who if you don’t know you’re not supposed to abbreviate the “doctor” part of the title. It’s “Doctor Who”, not “Dr. Who”.

  26. Heather H says:

I love Matt as the current Doctor and I adored Tennant. Oh what I would give for Moffat to write Captain Jack/John Barrowman back into the current series!

    • Al says:

I loved Captain Jack. Definitely one of my favourite companions.

Did any of you watch Torchwood? I haven’t seen any of it, I’m wondering if it’s worth giving it a go?

      • Axis2ClusterB says:

YES! Torchwood is so, so, so good. I actually preferred it to Doctor Who, to be honest, mostly due to my irrational and extreme Captain Jack love.

  27. Mira says:

    Oh yes!

  28. Ira says:

    For once and for all…..
He plays The Doctor, not Dr. Who, that’s the name of the show.
and yes I still like Matt Smith.
    Who plays the Eleventh Doctor.
    On Doctor Who.
I hope everyone gets it now.

  29. Lexi says:

He is kinda hot without hair

  30. Genevieve says:

I am a crazy Doctor Who fan but no, I would not hit it. I have never found Matt Smith attractive in the least. His eyes are too sunken in for me. But I had no idea thats what his body looked like without a shirt. He definitely needs some shirtless scenes in Dr.Who.

  31. Simon says:

I love when you feature Matt! I’d still hit it. Over and over and over and over… Fan from before his Who days so I think that gives me full rights to him. Sorry 😀 I met him and he is utterly charming and even more handsome in the flesh. He’s a better Doctor than Tennant, in my opinion.

  32. jaye says:

He looks really grizzled here. Not that he’s not still bangable (he most certainly is) but he’s at his best with the floppy hair.

  33. T.Fanty says:

One last note: he was, apparently, an up and coming footballer before an injury knocked him out of the profession and into acting. With hair like that, he looks as though he would be right at home in the Premier League (and that isn’t really a compliment).

  34. Jessica says:

Stop abbeviating the “doctor” part of Doctor Who!!! The show is called “Doctor Who” not “Dr. Who”! And his character is not called “Doctor Who”, his character is called “The Doctor”. Matt Smith plays “the Doctor” on “Doctor Who”.

On a different note, they must be finished filming the 50th special if he was able to cut his hair. There’s no way that short hair would cut it on Doctor Who.

  35. cateD says:

It’s “Doctor Who”. You always have to spell out the entire word – not abbreviate it. DOCTOR. Don’t make the English, Australians and New Zealanders angry: you don’t want to upset Benedict Cumberbatch or Hugh Jackman or Karl Urban, do you? You especially don’t want an angry Russell Crowe…

  36. Amy says:

I believe they have finished filming the special

  37. Amy says:
