Chris Brown to taint the memory of the late Aaliyah with a song collaboration

You know I don’t like to talk about Chris Brown unless it’s super-important. Well, I’m breaking one of my own rules here. These are photos of Chris yesterday at the BET Awards 2013 press conference at Icon Ultra Lounge. Chris’s outfit was… um… odd? At first I only saw him from the waist up, and I thought he was just wearing a leather vest as a top, and I was all “Chris Brown is a Village Person.” But there’s a sleeveless t-shirt under there, and the camo pants are doing their part too. This ensemble is just awful, right? I guess he wanted to show off his ink, but instead of looking arty and hip, he looks like a would-be leather-daddy on stroll.

At the BET press conference, Chris announced that his next single off of his new album (“X”) will be called “They Don’t Know”. And it’s a collaboration! With the late artist Aaliyah. God, remember Aaliyah? I loved her. She had a great, sultry voice. RIP Aaliyah! Apparently, Chris got his hands on previously unreleased vocals from Aaliyah (and hopefully he got permission from her estate?), thus the “collabo”. Chris has already shot the music video too, and he said at the BET presser: “I shot it in the hood. I went to the Cedar Block. Bringing both worlds together and trying to uplift the poverty side of the community and show them where I’m from. I’m from Virginia, but everybody comes from a broken home or being broke. I remember when I was.” Ugh.

Meanwhile, have you heard the story about Chris’s Hollywood Hills home and how he painted colorful “monster murals” on the walls? Here’s a photo:

So what would you do if your neighbor did that? If it was Chris Brown… well, I would probably try to ignore it. But some neighborhood moms are pissed at him because the monsters are scaring their kids:

The monsters painted on Chris Brown’s house might scare some children in his Hollywood Hills neighborhood — but not all of them.

“My kids think they’re really cool,” Melissa Harrington said of her 6-year-old twins. “They’re pretty excited about it.” Harrington, who lives a five-minute walk away from the pop star, called the murals “colorful” and “cute.”

“Look at the paint job on his cars. They’re works of art,” she said. “What style of art are you going to paint on a modern home like that?”

Brown drew complaints from other neighbors — along with a citation from the city — after he painted the 8-foot tall, brightly colored creatures on a retaining wall and along the side of his concrete-and-steel-and-glass home. Patti Negri, head of the Hollywood Dell Civic Assn., told the Los Angeles Times that she had gotten numerous complaints from residents.

“There are lots of babies, lots of children, and they’re literally frightened,” she said. “It’s like devils on the wall — big scary eyes and big scary teeth, and just the whole vibe is not what we’re used to.”

Responding to complaints about the monster art, L.A. city code officials cited Brown for unpermitted and excessive signage and ordered him to remove the art within 30 days. He also faces fines that start at $376 but could rise significantly if he fails to comply.

“They jump right out at you. They aren’t just at the curb by the bins. It is all the way up the side of the house,” said L.A. City Councilman Tom LaBonge, whose district includes Brown’s colorful abode.

Negri said neighbors have also complained about Brown’s loud parties, large entourages and fast cars.

“Chris himself did not warm himself to the neighborhood when he first got here, so this is kind of the straw that broke the camel’s back,” she said.

Harrington said plenty of celebrities have lived in the area — including Eva Longoria, Lil’ Jon and Lindsay Lohan — bringing paparazzi and lots of cars, and added that her non-famous neighbors also throw big parties and speed through the narrow streets.
“It’s not just necessarily in fancy cars or Chris Brown,” she said.

Brown’s attorney, Mark Geragos, said Brown has more to fear from his neighbors than the other way around.

“I’m scared of neighborhood busybodies like this,” Geragos told The Times. “They’ve called animal control. They have sicced parking [enforcement] on him, and now they reached the heights of ridiculousness here. Shame on them.” Geragos said the city can expect a legal fight over the artwork, calling it an attempt “to suspend the 1st Amendment.”

Brown responded to critics via Twitter, saying “imma paint until my hands fall off.”

“It’s art,” he tweeted Saturday. “There are scarier creatures on Harry potter. Get a … life!”

Harrington noted Brown isn’t the only resident with an unusual paint job.

“Behind our house is a house with pink-and-yellow stripes,” she said. “Chris Brown can see it out of his window if he looks across the canyon. … If you really don’t like the murals, then call in that pink-and-yellow one he has to look at every day. Don’t just persecute the guy,” she said.

[From LA Times]

“Persecute”? Seriously? Are we going to cry “persecution” every time some d-bag gets a fine from the city code people? As for the monster art… I can see how it would scare young children, but I can also see how it’s a slippery First Amendment issue. What if the “public art” was something more traditionally beautiful? What if he graffiti’d butterflies and baby ducks onto his wall? Would there still be complaints? If those complaints went away if the art was cuter, then I think Chris has a decent case.

God, he just keeps stooping lower and lower. Leave Aaliyah alone.
    Love the artwork though.

  2. Hipocricy says:

    Hell to the nooooooooooooooo !!!

Don’t pervert the memory of my sweet Aaliyah !

    Such a shame !

    • Chciagogurl says:

      THIS! Who cares about monsters?

Don’t defile the memory of Aaliyah. I can’t believe he has access to her vocals. Who sold them? I doubt Missy, Tim — i doubt many who worked with her would have sold them. Is it Damon’s broke self? Her immediate family?

  3. Sisi says:

    Ugh

  4. Shade says:

WTF is he wearing??? Ugh. He’s repellent.

  5. Micki says:

    1. I don’t think I remember Aalyah very well. Was she perhaps in a movie with Jet Li? Something about gang rivalry?
    About “tainting”-he’s a natural talant.

2.I must say I strongly dislike neighbours like that. It#s not my type of “art” but it’s his fence.
Some kids are afraid of dogs, some of cats and my firstborn was having fits whenever he saw birds. Big or small, cute or not- he was hysterical every time.
I’d rather explain to my kids that these monsters are staying on the wall only and save my wrath for more important matters. I’m sure C.B. will deliver in due time.

    • Organic says:

I agree with you on the murals. Chris is an easy target. Sometimes its his own doing, other times, well, people dont want to interrogate the circumstances.

Aaliyah was in a Jet Li film. She was also R Kellys protegee and wife until she grew too old for his tastes (read :turned 18), Her voice was most certainly NOT sultry, she sang on her higher register but had very little range. She couldnt belt it like say Monica. She knew and stuck to her genre, cooldown rnb.

      • Micki says:

Thanks, I was wondering. I must admit I don’t remember her voice and had to search on Yotube. I only remember she died in a car crash very young.

As for the neighbours…I have new ones, who are impossible intrusive. There’s no other way to describe it.
I was pushed to drastic measures and covered all the cracks in the separating wall with tent cloth. Now they have to sit on their lawn in the burning sun if they want to keep watch on us.
        And guess what? They DO…

    • Willa says:

She died in a plane crash after shooting a music video.

    • TheOriginalKitten says:

I think it’s bizarre that people would complain about the murals. If I was a kid, I bet my brother and I would love those cool monsters.

That being said, if it’s against city building codes, then he’s still obligated to go through the proper channels to get the mural approved before putting it up.

…and he’s still a d*ckhead in my book, but for other reasons.

  6. marie says:

    no, just no-leave Aaliyah’s memory alone. he’s a douche and I don’t care to hear a collaboration.

as for the art, it’s his house and he should be allowed to do what he wants within reason. and now I gotta go shower and get the stank of half defending CB off me..

    • Hakura says:

Got a spare towel, I could borrow?

But I don’t really consider you to be ‘defending’ CB. You’re just pointing out what is true about the situation itself, no matter who is involved. This time it just happens to involve our favorite dickwad.

    • TheOriginalKitten says:

Completely agree about Aaliyah and the murals and the need for a shower.

  7. Jess v says:

Hmm I rather like the monsters and they are really well done. Can I have them?

    • Jenny says:

Lol, CB looks like a douche in that outfit, but I think the monsters are kind of cute!

  8. the original bellaluna says:

    Ummmm…NO. Just NO. NOT. EVER.

  9. Amy says:

At least he’s “collaborating” with someone he can’t beat up 🙁 Poor Aaliyah–she doesn’t get a choice

(As far as the monsters go, I am fine with them. I can see how they might scare kids, but that’s not really his problem. He could have done a lot worse, put something really offensive up there. Of course, i don’t know what the covenants of his neighborhood might be).

    • Hakura says:

@Amy – “He could have done a lot worse, put something really offensive up there.

      Yeah, like his picture.

      • Amy says:

Ha! I thought that, but didn’t say it 😉

      • Hakura says:

@Amy – I could almost hear it unsaid in your comment, so I just had to, even if it was so obvious xD Big mural of his face (or…anything else) would certainly send me running the other way.

  10. kibbles says:

Aaliyah was gorgeous and I liked her smooth and sultry music. She didn’t have a lot of range, but she puts a lot of the current R&B princesses to shame because she had class and didn’t make her personal problems public for the world to see like, say, Chris Brown and Rihanna. I hate that this douchebag is touching anything to do with Aaliyah. Her family shouldn’t allow him to use any of her music. It’s a shame but I guess this is how her family can keep her memory alive.

    • Hakura says:

But if these were previously un-released tracks of Aaliyah’s, would he have been obligated to get her family’s permission at all? It’s possible they legally belong to a specific record company or producer, unfortunately…

  11. Shelley says:

Oh please to this whole article. Firstly those murals are NOT scary, especially if you consider all the stuff kids watch on Cartoon Network and the like. Secondly, if Aaliyah could have had a relationship with R Kelly, she certainly wouldn’t have any qualms about doing a collabo with Chris Brown.

    • Amy says:

I considered that, and that might be true. Unfortunately, it’s the kind of thing we’ll never know.

      • Jaye says:

I don’t know. She was REALLY young when she got involved w/Kelly. And he took advantage of that youth. She was with Damon Dash for a long time and was engaged to him before she passed away. Now, Dame Dash is a bit of a douche, but as far as we know he wasn’t a violent abuser like Brown. Plus he seemed to really love Aaliyah.

  12. Baskingshark says:

God, he is revolting. He’s like something you’d pick up with tongs so it doesn’t get on your hands or clothes.

  13. Maxine says:

First amendment issue my ass. There are building codes and all manner of regulations governing the upkeep of private homes wherever you go. When I lived in a small Iowa town, you could get fined for grass over a certain height. Here in CA, a friend had to check the rules re. paint colors before she repainted her house. I’ve heard of plastic lawn flamingos being banned.

It’s all utterly normal. He was just too young and stupid to know he has to have something like this cleared beforehand. If he doesn’t want to follow regulations like this, he should buy a place in the middle of nowhere with some acreage around it.

I just watched Queen of the Dammed recently. Aaliyah and C. Theron’s ex were so pretty.

  14. Hakura says:

I still remember where I was when I heard about the accident. Summer before 10th grade…I’m not sure why, but it affected me in a really emotional way…Still does.

This is probably his manipulative way to take advantage of her fans, to get his music back up on the charts. Which is just gross.

The monster thing… Absolutely ridiculous. You see scarier things on 5 year old boy’s T-shirts at Walmart, ffs. I grew up with some real asshole neighbors who would do the same thing to us at every opportunity, simply because we didn’t participate in the neighborhood gossip BS.

  15. allons-y alonso says:

NO!!!!! JUST NO!!!!! Is nothing sacred anymore? Leave the lovely Aaliyah ALONE!!!!

  16. babythestarsshinebrite says:

    HE BET NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  17. Helvetica says:

He looks like a knock off version of Sisqo.

Looking at him with this stupid bleached hair and his stupid tattoos up to his neck, I just wonder, how on earth could Rihanna find him attractive? He looks so trashy.

    • Hakura says:

Maybe she likes the aspects of him that are like herself. Sadly, she’s looked appropriate for the street corners herself, for a while.

    • Jenny says:

      That’s her type, unfortunately.

  18. neelyo says:

That collaboration will never see the light of day. Drake, who is a huge Aaliyah fan has tried for years to get the family’s permission to use her tracks and they’ve refused. I doubt they would permit Brown to use them.

This just seems like a stunt to piss off Drake.

  19. Nerd Alert says:

As much as I hate Chris Brown, I do like his wall art. If some little chillins are afraid of it, I think that’s on mommy to control, not CB.

    [Sorry for defending Chris Brown]

  20. KellyinSeattle says:

Regardless of whether the mural is scary, or buterflies and ponies, if murals are against the city codes, then he should have to take them down or get permission from the city. I don’t know who gets to determine what’s allowed and what’s not, but he does have an obligation to be within the parameters of the code. And , with that hair color, he’s looking a little bit like NeNe, and definitely like Dennis Rodman.

  21. Sarah says:

Didn’t Drake already do this, a posthumous collaboration with Aaliyah recordings? Considering Chris and Drake’s longtime feud, that’s interesting.

  22. YEP_ITS_HER says:

He looks hilariously camp. His murals are an eye sore and I am so very glad his neighbors took issue publicly.
